Bioaccumulation of Cd, Cr, Cu, Co, Pb, Ni and Zn was investigated in the eulittoral gammaridean amphipod Chaetogammarus marinus (Leach, 1815) from the Avon and Tamar estuaries (UK). The main goals were to provide information on accumulation strategies of the organisms tested and to verify toxicokinetic models as a predictive tool. The organisms accumulated metals upon exposure and it was possible to estimate significant model parameters of two-compartment and hyperbolic models, with the exception of Zn. Both types of models yielded significant model estimates in two independent toxicokinetic studies using gammarids from the Avon and Tamar estuaries, respectively. Kinetic BCFs at theoretical equilibrium were 58-102 for Cd, 95-215 for Cr, 400-963 for Cu, 38-59 for Co, 150-750 for Pb and 33-63 for Ni, and were in most cases distinctly lower than the range reported in the literature for other amphipods. To demonstrate the potential of toxicokinetic models as a predictive tool, attempts were made, further to verify time-dependent model data (Tamar) with independent experimental data (Avon). In this case only for Cd were both in good agreement, whilst for all other elements the models overestimated the measured values. The second approach was to verify time-dependent model data (Tamar) with measured values from an independent concentration-dependent uptake study (Tamar) or, alternatively, to estimate the model parameters simultaneously for both studies. A good agreement between observed and predicted values was obtained for all elements for the simultaneous two-compartment models. Only for Cd was a simultaneous estimation of the hyperbolic model more promising. A tentative estimation showed the following sequence of sensitivity of C. marinus to an increase of soluble metal exposure: 0.6 microg Cd l(-1), 1.7 microg Cr l(-1), 16 microg Cu l(-1), 3.5 microg Co l(-1), 0.8 microg Pb l(-1) and 7 microg Ni l(-1). Available information can be used to quantify a measure of agreement or disagreement between bioaccumulation in different amphipods. This can be regarded as an important step in the calibration of biomonitors which is necessary to assess the potential for bioaccumulation on a large geographical scale.

The determination of Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Cu, Co, Zn, Cd, K and Na was carried out in the mesozooplankton caught in the southern Baltic in July 1980. The species structure of mesozooplankton was characterized on the basis of mean numbers of particular components and their percentage. The chemical analyses of the samples of mesozooplankton show a wide range of values, although they were within the ranges published for zooplankton from other aquatic regions of the world. Both concentration factors and selectivity factors for Zn, Cd, Pb and Cu in the organisms analysed were calculated. The significant cross-correlation coefficients calculated for all possible pairs of metals showed the following associations: CuPbNiMnFe, MnZn and NaZn.

The acute effects of many individual, seawater-solubilized metals on meiobenthic copepods and nematodes are well known. In sediments, however, metals most often occur as mixtures, and it is not known whether such mixtures exhibit simple additive toxicity to meiobenthos. The estuarine meiobenthic copepod Amphiascus tenuiremis was tested in four acute (96-h) sediment bioassays to determine sediment and pore-water LC50s for single-metal exposures to copper (Cu), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn). Laboratory-cultured copepods were exposed to clean 98% silt:clay sediments spiked with metal chloride solutions to yield five exposure concentrations plus a control. Trimmed Spearman-Karber analysis gave sediment 96-h LC50 values of 4.4 mumole Cu/g, 5.7 mumole Ni/g, 11.9 mumole Pb/g, 10.3 mumole Zn/g, and pore-water 96-h LC50 values of 2 mumole/l, 11.7 mumole/l, and 5.7 mumole/l for Cu, Ni, and Zn, respectively. Male survival after exposure to Cu, Pb, and Ni was significantly less than female survival (alpha = 0.05). Toxicity of a combined USEPA priority metal mixture to A. tenuiremis was assessed using sediment spiked equitoxically with Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn. The sum toxic unit that produced a median lethal dose was 0.72. The mixture had a significantly greater than additive effect on A. tenuiremis survival, with the mixture being 1.4x more toxic than that expected by simple additivity.

The distribution, partitioning and concentrations of trace metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn) in seawater, including dissolved and particulate phases, and in copepods in the ocean outfall area off the northern coast of Taiwan were investigated. Normalization of metal concentrations to the background metal concentration to yield relative enrichment factors (EF), which were used to evaluate the contamination of dissolved and particulate trace metals in seawater around the ocean outfall. The EF results indicated that the outfall area was significantly contaminated by dissolved Fe and Zn, and by particulate Fe, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn. In addition, most trace metals were chiefly in the particulate phase. The average percentage of total metal concentrations (dissolved plus particulate phases) bound by suspended particulate matter followed the sequence Al(95%) = Mn(95%) > Pb(88%) > Cu(86%) > Fe(72%) > Zn(32%) > Cr(17.5%) > Cd(3.4%). Therefore, metal contamination is better evaluated in solid phase than in the dissolved phase. The concentration ranges of trace metals in the copepods, Temora turbinata, Oncaea venusta and Euchaeta rimana, near the outfall were: Cd, 0.23-1.81 microg g(-1); Cr, 16.5-195 microg g(-1); Cu, 14-160 microg g(-1); Fe, 256-7255 microg g(-1); Mn, 5.5-80.8 microg g(-1); Pb, 2.6-56.2 microg g(-1); Zn, 132-3891 microg g(-1); and Al, 0.21-1.13%. Aluminum, and probably Fe, seemed to be the major elements in copepods. The concentrations of trace metals in copepods, especially Temora turbinata, near the outfall were generally higher than those obtained in the background station. The mean increase in bioconcentration factor of metals in copepods ranged from 4 to 7 and followed the sequence Al(6.4) > Cu(6.2) > Fe(6.0) > Zn(5.7) > Pb(5.6) > Cr(5.5) > Cd(5.1) > Mn(4.7). Therefore, marine copepods in the waters of northern Taiwan can accumulate trace metals over background concentrations and act as contamination indicators.

Heavy metal concentrations in the surface sediments of specially managed Ulsan Bay were investigated to determine metal distribution, pollution status and its ecological risk using pollution indices (enrichment factor and geo-accumulation index), potential ecological risk index and sediment quality guidelines (SQGs). The order of mean concentration (mg/kg) of metals was Zn (361.9) > Cu (95.6) > Pb (90.7) > Cr (64.7) > Ni (32.2) > Co (16.6) > As (15.8) > Cd (0.40) > Hg (0.16) in sediments of Ulsan Bay. Spatial distribution of metals in sediments showed a significantly higher concentration near industrial complexes, indicating that metal pollution is caused by anthropogenic sources. The results of enrichment factor (EF) and geo-accumulation index (Igeo) showed that sediments were significantly accumulated with Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb and Hg, indicating moderate to very severe enrichment (pollution) by these metals. Based on the potential ecological risk index, Hg and Cd posed a very high and a considerable potential ecological risk. Cu and As posed a moderate potential ecological risk, while, other metals (Cr, Co, Ni, Zn and Pb) rarely posed any potential ecological risk to the coastal environments. The sediments in Ulsan Bay showed a very high level of ecological risk, dominated by Hg and Cd. Metal concentrations in sediments were 80% for Cu, 96.7% for Zn, 50% for As, 70% for Pb and 50% for Hg above the threshold effects level (TEL), respectively.

The release and removal behaviour of Cd, Cu, Co, Ni, Pb and Zn from the sediment of Xiamen Harbour to sea water have been studied under ultra-clean laboratory condition within 168 b. Initial rapid increases in dissolved Cu, Pb, Zn and Co were observed in the first six hours and twelve hours respectively after addition of various amounts of sediment. Then Pb and Co decreased to background values, while Zn decreased to less than the background value and Cu remained unchanged. Cd and Ni did not increase during the experiment. The results indicated that the weakly bound heavy metals were released from the sediment through desorption or exchange. Simultaneously, they might form complexes or be adsorbed in colloids or particles. The two processes existed simultaneously, changing with time and conditions.

In many aquatic organisms including Mytilus edulis, the role of temperature on bioaccumulation of metals is still not clearly understood. In this study, uptake and accumulation of Cu, Co, Cd and Pb in mussels were investigated at different temperatures (6-26 degrees C). Results from exposure of isolated gills showed a positive relationship between temperature and metal uptake. But in whole organism experiments, only the accumulations of non-essential metals (Cd, Pb) showed a similar trend while the two essential metals Co and Cu were independent and inversely related to temperature, respectively. With exception of Cu, elimination process appeared to be independent of temperature. The study also showed that neither changes in scope for growth (SFG) of mussels nor chemical speciation could fully account for the observed temperature-effects. Overall, these results suggest that fundamentally (i.e. at epithelial membranes), temperature-effects on uptake are largely due to changes in solution chemistry and physical kinetics, which favours higher uptake at high temperature. But at whole organism level, complex physiological responses appears to mask the relationship, particularly for biologically essential metals like copper.

The bioaccumulation of four metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn) dissolved in water was assessed measuring the concentrations recorded within sea-urchin larvae (Paracentrotus lividus, Lmk.) after a 48-h exposure period. Concurrently, the frequencies of abnormalities were evaluated at the 48-h pluteus stage to check the actual toxicity of such contaminants with regards to larval development. Maximum metal concentrations in the larvae reached 43.8 +/- 6.7 micrograms Cd g-1 dry weight (d.w.), 1269 +/- 392 micrograms Cu g-1 d.w., 3106 +/- 679 micrograms Pb g-1 d.w., 534 +/- 62 micrograms Zn g-1 d.w. Bioconcentration factors (BCFs) reached very high values for Pb (maximum value: 16,282 +/- 973) and indicated that the concentrations of Pb and Cd were directly related to the water concentration at least in the range of concentrations tested. Zn appeared to be partially regulated above a certain threshold concentration (between 5 and 25 micrograms l-1). Cu was accumulated with an active uptake at least below lethal threshold level (100 micrograms l-1). Nevertheless, above these thresholds, high mortality of embryos prevent any interpretation of Zn and Cu bioconcentration factors. Concurrent studies carried out on embryotoxicity confirmed the high toxicity of Cu towards sea-urchin pluteus larvae and highlighted the different behaviour of Cd. The internal Cd concentrations were directly related to the external ones, comparable to other non-essential metals, but Cd had little toxic effect on the initial larval development.

The forms distribution of Zn, Cd, Pb and Cu in waters of the Northwest Bohai Gulf is investigated by inverse polarography of anti-adsorption physically coated mercury film electrode, the higher content of most forms of trace metals is in polluted estuary water, and unstable Zn and Pb are in anomalous distribution. The average concentrations read ΣZn 20.0μg/1 (14.5-36.6 μg/l, ΣCd 0.11pg/1 (0.080-0.14μg/1), ΣPb 1.0μg/1 (0.58-1.6 μg/1), and ΣCu 5.2μg/1) (2.37-8.43 μ/1) respectively.

The chemical partitioning of 12 trace metals (Ba, Cd, Co, Cu, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sc, Sr, U, Zn) in 9 surface sediments from Daya Bay, northern South China Sea, was studied by a four-step sequential extraction technique to assess their environmental/pollution status. The studied metals take on different fraction composition patterns, and some of them show significant spatial variation especially for Cd. A majority of the studied metals can be considered immobile because of their high percentages in the residual fraction. It seems that the Daya Bay surface sediments have not yet been polluted by the studied heavy metals which are used as parameters to classify marine sediment quality, i.e., Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn. For all metals except for Pb, the extent of anthropogenic influences on their total concentrations in the Daya Bay surface sediments is generally imperceptible. The metals’ potential risks to the environment were assessed, and the results showed that they have generally no risk or low risk except for Cd, Mn and Sr.

We report a simplified synthesis, and some performance characteristics, for 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HOQ) covalently bonded to a chemically resistant TosoHaas TSK vinyl polymer resin. The resin was used to concentrate trace metals from stored, acidified seawater samples collected from Jellyfish Lake, an anoxic marine lake in the Palau Islands. The Mn, Fe, and Zn profiles determined from the 8-HOQ resin extraction were similar to those determined using Chelex-100 resin. The Zn and Cd profiles did not exhibit removal by sulfide “stripping” in contrast to other anoxic marine basins. The profiles of Co and Ni also exhibited elevated concentrations in the anoxic hypolimnion. The solution speciation and saturation states for the metals were calculated using revised metal-bisulfide stability constants. The calculations suggest that the MS(HS) species dominates the solution speciation for Mn, Co, Ni, Zn, Cd, and Pb. Cu(I) is modeled as the CuS or Cu(HS)2 species, while Fe(II) behaves as the free Fe2+ cation. The Mn, Co, Ni, Cu and Cd concentrations appeared to be at least 10-fold undersaturated, while the Fe(II), Zn, and Pb concentrations were close to saturation with respect to their metal sulfides.

Dissolved, weakly and strongly bound particulates Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Co, Ni and Fe have been measured in the surface water sampled from eleven stations in Xiamen Harbor by clean laboratory methods and GFAAS. The average concentrations found in dissolved fractions are Cu: 0.41±0.12; Pb: 0.014±0.008; Zn: 0.084±0.043; Cd: 0.022±0.004; Co: 0.009±0.004; Ni: 0.15±0.02; and Fe: 0.15± 0.02 μg/kg, which make up 62%, 6%, 12%, 85%, 5%, 25% and <1% of the total metals in the surface water respectively. The results are mucn lower than those reported previously in the coastal waters of China. Industrial sources of trace metal contamination are likely responsible for the distribution of trace metals.

This study concerned the accumulation of trace metals in tissues of seagrass (Thalassia hemprichii) exposed to various concentrations of Zn2++, Cd2++, Pb2++ and Cu2++ for 10 d, and the effect of excessive metals on quantum yield (ΔF=Fm'), photosynthetic pigments and antioxidative enzymes like superoxide dismutase (SOD), guaiacol peroxidase (POD) were also examined. Cadmium was the most highly accumulated metal. Meanwhile, high metals levels led to a remarkable breakdown of photosynthetic parameters. Especially, ΔF=Fm', chlorophyll and carotenoid were significantly low during prolonged Cu exposure. Besides, ΔF=Fm' was more severely depressed by Cu and Zn than Pb and Cd. However, T. hemprichii had positive response by increasing the activity of SOD and POD. The results indicate that T. hemprichii is the most sensitive to Cu, and the antioxidative protection mechanisms of T. hemprichii are more efficiently activated to avoid damage of Zn, Cd and Pb stress. Finally, due to the high Cd-accumulation and strong Cd-tolerance capacity, T. hemprichii can be used for phytoremediation in Cd-contaminated areas.

The present study was undertaken for assessing the level of heavy metals such as iron, manganese, zinc, copper, nickel, cadmium, lead, and cobalt in recent sediment samples of Safaga Bay, Egypt. Concentration of heavy metals in sediments shows significant variability and ranges from 863.37 to 1144.93 ppm for Fe, 64.29–586.8 ppm for Mn, 2.7–12.68 ppm for Zn, 3.01–7.2 ppm for Pb, 1.53–3.29 ppm for Ni, 0.55–1.57 ppm for Co, 0.16–1.37 ppm for Cu, and 0.22–0.4 ppm for Cd.

Sediment pollution assessments were carried out using an enrichment factor and geoaccumulation index. The calculation of enrichment factor showed that Cd is enriched by 4.1 due to phosphate sources in Safaga Bay. The Geoaccumulation index results revealed that there are positive and negative correlations between Fe, Zn, Mn, Pb, Ni, Cu, Co, and Cd indicating that these metals have complicated geochemical behaviors.
