Pyroxene thermometry in simple and complex systems   总被引:43,自引:2,他引:43
Simple mixing models have been applied to ortho- and clinopyroxene solid solutions and a semi-empirical equation of state extracted from the available experimental data for the diopside-enstatite miscibility gap. This equation successfully reproduces the miscibility gap over a temperature range of 800 °C to 1700 °C and is apparently also applicable to aluminous pyroxenes in the system CaSiO3-MgSiO3-Al2O3. The effect of iron solubility in the pyroxenes has been calibrated empirically using most of the available experimental data for multicomponent pyroxenes. This semi-empirical model reproduces most of the experimental data within 70 °C. Temperatures calculated for naturally equilibrated Mg-rich two-pyroxene assemblages deviate markedly from those estimated using the thermometer of Wood and Banno (1973). These discrepancies can be attributed to large inaccuracies in the thermometer of Wood and Banno (1973) for Mg-rich compositions.  相似文献

In the system FeO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 (FMAS), the equilibrium Al-content of orthopyroxene coexisting with olivine and spinel was reversed in 18 experiments at 1 340° C and 11 or 18 kbar, using graphite capsules and PbO flux. In the CFMAS system (+CaO), the Al-contents of ortho- and clinopyroxene coexisting with olivine and spinel were reversed in 5 experiments at 1 340° C and 18 kbar. The Al-content of clinopyroxene remains constant, while the Al-content of orthopyroxene increases with increasing Fe-content. The Ca-content of clinopyroxene is independent of the Al-content. The data were used to describe the Fe-Mg site distribution in the aluminous orthopyroxene. The Fe-Mg partitioning among orthopyroxene, olivine, spinel and garnet, combined with the Al-content of orthopyroxene, was used to calculate orthopyroxene based thermobarometers in the FMAS, CFMAS and NCFMAS (+Na2O) systems. The thermobarometers were applied to the Adirondack metagabbros, which gave equilibration temperatures of 700–800° C and pressures 7.4–10.3 kbar.  相似文献

Clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene megacrysts containing garnet lamellae up to 1.2 mm thick as an exsolved phase are found rarely in kimberlites from Frank Smith and Bellsbank. Chemically the clinopyroxenes are characteristically subcalcic, being within the range of 100 Ca/Ca + Mg + Fe = 27 to 36, and the orthopyroxenes are characterized by high Al2O3 and Cr2O3. Immediately after crystallization during very slow cooling, clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene exsolve wide-spaced orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene phases parallel to (100) of the host phases, respectively, then both host and exsolved phases exsolve garnet lamellae. Topotactic relations between pyroxenes and garnet are determined by X-ray for the first time. Partitioning of major and minor elements among the coexisting clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene and garnet in pyroxene megacrysts is the same as that of the granular-type garnet peridotite xenoliths in Lesotho and South African kimberlies. Mineralogy and chemistry indicate that subcalcic clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene megacrysts contain respectively about 10 and 3 mole % of the garnet molecule in solid solution.  相似文献

A geothermometric technique based on equilibria between coexisting plagioclase and alkali feldspar was applied to quartzo-feldspathic granulites from Salvador, BA, Brazil. The conditions of metamorphism were determined to be in the range 750 ° C–800 ° C, 4–8 Kb, by comparison with experimental data on the stabilities of sapphirine, phlogopite and other minerals occurring in the associated rocks. Selected feldspar data gives temperatures near, but slightly below, this range. Several variants of the Wood and Banno model, as well as an empirical two-pyroxene geothermometer, were also tested and found to give temperatures which were apparently 50 °–100 ° high. The solubility of Al2O3 in orthopyroxene indicates temperatures which are about 200 ° to high, suggesting that Fe in the natural assemblages significantly changes relationships observed experimentally in MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 systems.  相似文献

The stability of coexisting orthopyroxene, sillimanite and quartz and the composition of orthopyroxene in this assemblage has been determined in the system MgO-FeO-Fe2O3-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O as a function of pressure, mainly at 1,000° C, and at oxygen fugacities defined mostly by the hematite-magnetite buffer. The upper stability of the assemblage is terminated at 17 kbars, 1,000° C, by the reaction opx+Al-silicate gar+qz, proceeding toward lower pressures with increasing Fe/(Fe+Mg) ratio in the system. The lower stability is controlled by the reaction opx+sill+qz cord, which occurs at 11 kbars in the iron-free system but is lowered to 9 kbars with increasing Fe/(Fe+Mg). Spinel solid solutions are stabilized, besides quartz, up to 14 kbars in favour of garnet in the iron-rich part of the system (Fe/(Fe+Mg)0.30). Ferric-ferrous ratios in orthopyroxene are increasing with increasing ferro-magnesian ratio. At least part of the generally observed increase in Al content with Fe2+ in orthopyroxene is not due to an increased solubility of the MgAlAlSiO6 component but rather of a MgFe3+AlSiO6 component. The data permit an estimate of oxygen fugacity from the composition of orthopyroxene in coexistence with sillimanite and quartz.  相似文献

Highly magnesian and aluminous migmatitic gneisses from Mather Peninsula in the Rauer Group, Eastern Antarctica, preserve ultrahigh temperature (UHT) metamorphic assemblages that include orthopyroxene+sillimanite±quartz, garnet+sillimanite±quartz and garnet+orthopyroxene±sillimanite. Garnet that ranges up to XMg of 71.5 coexists with aluminous orthopyroxene that shows zoning from cores with 7.5–8.5 wt% Al2O3 to rims with up to 10.6 wt% Al2O3 adjacent to garnet. Peak PT conditions of 1050 °C and 12 kbar are retrieved from Fe–Mg–Al thermobarometry involving garnet and orthopyroxene, in very good agreement with independent constraints from petrogenetic grids in FeO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 and related chemical systems. Sapphirine, orthopyroxene and cordierite form extensive symplectites and coronas on the early phases. The specific reaction textures and assemblages involving these secondary phases correlate with initial garnet XMg , with apparent higher-pressure reaction products occurring on the more magnesian garnet, and are interpreted to result from an initial phase of ultrahigh temperature near-isothermal decompression (UHT-ITD) from 12 to 8 kbar at temperatures in excess of 950 °C. Later textures that involved biotite formation and then partial breakdown, along with garnet relics, to symplectites of orthopyroxene+cordierite or cordierite+spinel may reflect hydration through back-reaction with crystallizing melts on cooling below 900–850 °C, followed by ITD from 7 to 8 kbar to c. 5 kbar at temperatures of 750–850 °C. The tectonic significance of this P–T history is ambiguous as the Rauer Group records the effects of Archean tectonothermal events as well as high-grade events at 1000 and 530 Ma. Late-stage biotite formation and subsequent ITD can be correlated with the P–T history preserved in the Proterozoic components of the Rauer Group and hence with either 1000 or 530 Ma collisional orogenesis. However, whether the preceding UHT-ITD history reflects a temporally unrelated event (e.g. Archean) or is simply an early stage of either the late-Proterozoic or Pan-African tectonism, as recently deduced for similar UHT rocks from other areas of the East Antarctica, remains uncertain.  相似文献

Sapphirine and spinel can accommodate significant ferric iron and therefore the mineral equilibria involving these phases must be sensitive to a(O2). In this paper we examine the theoretical phase relationships involving sapphirine and spinel in addition to sillimanite, garnet, cordierite, rutile, hematite-ilmenite solid solution (henceforth ilmenite), and magnetite-ulvospinel solid solution (henceforth magnetite), in the presence of quartz and hypersthene in the system FeO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-TiO2-O2 (FMASTO), with particular reference to the topological inversion in P-T postulated by Hensen (Hensen 1986). Documented natural associations suggest that the appropriate topology for assemblages involving magnetite and ilmenite is Hensen's higher a(O2) one, while, in contrast, the topology for assemblages involving ilmenite and rutile is the lower a(O2) one. The exact configuration of the inversion between these two topologies remains uncertain because of uncertainties in the ferric/ferrous iron partitioning between sapphirine and spinel-cordierite at high temperatures. By comparison with experimental data and natural occurences, the sillimanite-sapphirine-cordierite-garnet-hypersthene-quartz assemblage is in equilibrium at about 1000°–1020° C and 7–8 kbars, while sapphirine-cordierite-spinel-garnet-hypersthene-quartz occurs at temperatures in excess of those attainable during crustal metamorphism, for ilmenite-rutile buffered assemblages. This implies that sapphirine-rutil-ehypersthene-quartz assemblages, as found in the Napier Complex, Antarctica, can only occur at > 1000° C. Also, spinel-rutile-hypersthene-quartz assemblages should not be found in rocks because temperatures in excess of 1100° C are expected to be involved in their formation. The temperatures of formation of spinel-sillimanite-sapphirine-garnethypersthene-quartz, sapphirine-spinel-cordierite-sillimanite-hypersthene-quartz, and sillimanite-spinel-cordieritegarnet-hypersthene-quartz in assemblages buffered by magnetite and ilmenite are less well constrained, but are likely to be in the range 900°–1000° C. These conclusions apply to rocks with compositions close to FMASTO; the perturbing effects of substantial concentrations of additional components, in particular Ca, mainly in garnet, and Zn and Cr, mainly in spinel, may invalidate these conclusions.  相似文献

Phase relations on the diopside-jadeite join were experimentally determined at 16–22 GPa pressures and temperatures in the vicinity of 1500 °C under hydrous and 2100 °C under anhydrous conditions, using a split-sphere anvil apparatus (USSA-2000). Starting compositions on the diopside-jadeite join produced assemblages containing CaSiO3 perovskite. This assured that the coexisting garnet with compositions in the ternary system Mg2Si2O6(En)-CaMgSi2O6(Di)-NaAlSi2 O6(Jd) had the maximum Ca content possible under the given conditions. Garnet reached its maximum Ca content at 17 GPa, and exsolved CaSiO3 perovskite at higher pressures. The garnet composition closest to the join, En5Di47.5Jd47.5 (mol%), was reached at 18–19 GPa and 2100 °C. The maximum Na content of garnet limited by the coexisting pyroxene did not exceed 51 mol% jadeite at 22 GPa and 2100 °C. At 22 GPa, pyroxene was replaced with NaAlSiO4 (calcium ferrite structure) and stishovite under anhydrous conditions, while in the presence of H2O a new hydrous Na-bearing phase with the ideal composition Na7(Ca, Mg)3AlSi5O9(OH)18 was synthesized instead. Garnet coexisting with CaSiO3 perovskite and MgSiO3 ilmenite at 22 GPa and 1400 °C was En51Di9Jd40, coincidentally identical to the first garnet forming in the ternary system at 13 GPa. The new data are applicable to the Earth's transition zone (400–670 km depths) and suggest that the transformation from eclogite to garnetite would occur primarily over a limited depth interval from 400 to 500 km. Gaps in the observed garnet compositions suggest immiscibility, which could potentially cause a sharp 400 km discontinuity in an eclogitic mantle.  相似文献

Abstract Phase relations and mineral chemistry for garnet (Grt), orthopyroxene (Opx), sapphirine (Spr), water-undersaturated cordierite (Crd), osumilite (Osu), sillimanite (Sil), K-feldspar (Kfs), quartz (Qtz) and a water-undersaturated liquid (Liq) have been determined experimentally in the system KFMASH (K2O-FeO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O) under low PH2O and fO2 conditions. Four compositions have been studied with 100 [Mg/(Mg + Fe)] ranging from 65.6 to 89.7. Based on our experimental data, a P-T grid is derived for the KFMASH system in the presence of quartz, orthopyroxene and liquid. Osumilite has been found in various mineral assemblages from 950 to 1100°C and 7.5 to 11 kbar. In the temperature range 1000-1100°C, the pair Os-Grt is stable over a pressure range of about 3kbar. The divariant reaction Os + Opx = Grt + Kfs + Qtz runs to the right with increasing pressure. Because osumilite is the most magnesian phase it is restricted to Mg-rich compositions at high pressure. The reaction defining the upper pressure stability limit of Os-Grt is located around 11 kbar with a nearly flat dP/dT slope over the temperature range 950–100°C. Over the entire temperature range investigated osumilite is not stable beyond 12 kbar. The data imply a restricted pressure range between 11 and 12 kbar for the stability of the assemblage Os-Opx-Sil-Kfs-Qtz. At 1050°C and above, osumilite occurs in various mineral assemblages together with the high-T pair Spr-Qtz. When coexisting with garnet, orthopyroxene or sapphirine, osumilite is always the most magnesian phase. At 1050 and 1100°C, liquid is invariably the most Fe-rich phase in the run product. Our data support a theoretical P-T grid for the KFMAS system in which osumilite is stable outside the field of the high-T assemblage Spr-Qtz. Moreover, our grid indicates that Os-Opx-Sil-Kfs-Qtz has a more restricted pressure and compositional stability domain than Os-Grt, in agreement with natural occurrences. Osumilite is stable over a large pressure range, such that in Mg-rich rocks, and at high temperature, it can occur at any depth in normal thickness continental crust.  相似文献

The recent publication of an updated thermodynamic dataset for petrological calculations provides an opportunity to illustrate the relationship between experimental data and the dataset, in the context of a new set of activity–composition models for several key minerals. These models represent orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and garnet in the system CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 (CMAS), and are valid up to 50 kbar and at least 1800 °C; they are the first high‐temperature models for these phases to be developed for the Holland & Powell dataset. The models are calibrated with reference to phase‐relation data in the subsystems CaO–MgO–SiO2 (CMS) and MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 (MAS), and will themselves form the basis of models in larger systems, suitable for calculating phase equilibria in the crust and mantle. In the course of calibrating the models, it was necessary to consider the reaction orthopyroxene + clinopyroxene + spinel = garnet + forsterite in CMAS, representing a univariant transition between simple spinel and garnet lherzolite assemblages. The high‐temperature segment of this reaction has been much disputed. We offer a powerful thermodynamic argument relating this reaction to the equivalent reaction in MAS, that forces us to choose between good model fits to the data in MAS or to the more recent data in CMAS. We favour the fit to the MAS data, preserving conformity with a large body of experimental and thermodynamic data that are incorporated as constraints on the activity–composition modelling via the internally consistent thermodynamic dataset.  相似文献

Mineralogical and mineral chemical evidence for prograde metamorphism is rarely preserved in rocks that have reached ultrahigh‐temperature (UHT) conditions (>900 °C) because high diffusion and reaction rates erase evidence for earlier assemblages. The UHT, high‐pressure (HP) metasedimentary rocks of the Leverburgh belt of South Harris, Scotland, are unusual in that evidence for the prograde history is preserved, despite having reached temperatures of ~955 °C or more. Two lithologies from the belt are investigated here and quantitatively modelled in the system NaO–CaO–K2O–FeO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O: a garnet‐kyanite‐K‐feldspar‐quartz gneiss (XMg = 37, A/AFM = 0.41), and an orthopyroxene‐garnet‐kyanite‐K‐feldspar quartzite (XMg = 89 A/AFM = 0.68). The garnet‐kyanite gneiss contains garnet porphyroblasts that grew on the prograde path, and captured inclusion assemblages of biotite, sillimanite, plagioclase and quartz (<790 °C, <9.5 kbar). These porphyroblasts preserve spectacular calcium zonation features with an early growth pattern overgrown by high‐Ca rims formed during high‐P metamorphism in the kyanite stability field. In contrast, Fe‐Mg zonation in the same garnet porphyroblasts reflects retrograde re‐equilibration, as a result of the relatively faster diffusivity of these ions. Peak PT are constrained by the occurrence of coexisting orthopyroxene and aluminosilicate in the quartzite. Orthopyroxene porphyroblasts [y(opx) = 0.17–0.22] contain sillimanite inclusions, indicative of maximum conditions of 955 ± 45 °C at 10.0 ± 1.5 kbar. Subsequently, orthopyroxene, kyanite, K‐feldspar and quartz developed in equilibrated textures, constraining the maximum pressure conditions to 12.5 ± 0.8 kbar at 905 ± 25 °C. P–T–X modelling reveals that the mineral assemblage orthopyroxene‐kyanite‐quartz is compositionally restricted to rocks of XMg > 84, consistent with its very rare occurrence in nature. The preservation of unusual high P–T mineral assemblages and chemical disequilibrium features in these UHT HP rocks is attributed to a rapid tectonometamorphic cycle involving arc subduction and terminating in exhumation.  相似文献

The pressure-temperature-compositional (P-T-X) dependence ofthe solubility of Al2O3 in orthopyroxene coexisting with garnethas been experimentally determined in the P-T range 5–30kilobars and 800–1200 ?C in the system FeO—MgO—Al2O3—SiO2(FMAS). These results have been extended into the CaO—FeO—MgO—Al2O3—SiO2(CFMAS) system in a further set of experiments designed to determinethe effect of the calcium content of garnet on the Al2O3 contentsof coexisting orthopyroxene at near-constant Mg/(Mg + Fe). Startingmaterials were mainly glasses of differing Mg/(Mg + Fe) or Ca/(Ca+ Mg + Fe) values, seeded with garnet and orthopyroxene of knowncomposition, but mineral mixes were also used to demonstratereversible equilibrium. Experiments were performed in a piston-cylinderapparatus using a talc/pyrex medium. Measured orthopyroxene and corrected garnet compositions werefitted by multiple and stepwise regression techniques to anequilibrium relation in the FMAS system, yielding best-fit,model-dependent parameters Goy= –5436 + 2.45T cal mol–1,and WM1FeA1= –920 cal mol–1. The volume change ofreaction, Vo, the entropy change, So970 and the enthalpy changeHo1,970, were calculated from the MAS system data of Perkinset al. (1981) and available heat capacity data for the phases.Data from CFMAS experiments were fitted to an expanded equilibriumrelation to give an estimate of the term WgaCaMg = 1900 ? 400cal/mole cation, using the other parametric values already obtainedin FMAS. The experimental data allow the development of a arnet-orthopyroxenegeobarometer applicable in FMAS and CFMAS: where This geobarometer is applicable to both pelitic and metabasicgranulites containing garnet orthopyroxene, and to garnet peridoditeand garnet pyroxenite assemblages found as xenoliths in diatremesor in peridotite massifs. It is limited, however, by the necessityof an independent temperature estimate, by errors associatedwith analysis of low Al2O3 contents in orthopyroxenes in high-pressureor low-temperature parageneses, and by uncertainties in thecomposition of garnet in equilibrium with orthopyroxene. Ananalysis of errors associated with this formulation of the geobarometersuggests that it is subject to great uncertainty at low pressuresand for Fe-rich compositions. The results of application ofthis geobarometer to natural assemblages are presented in acompanion paper.  相似文献

Consistent thermodynamic data on the properties of pure mineral end members and the mixing properties of solid solutions in the system FeO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 were employed to simulate phase relations of sapphirine, garnet, spinel, orthopyroxene, cordierite, quartz, Al silicates, and corundum. Compositional variations of the solid solutions with temperature notably modify the topology of the P-T diagrams, which differ from the petrogenetic grids widely used in the literature. It is worth noting that the evaluation of P-T metamorphic conditions based on reaction relations in sapphirine-bearing assemblages cannot be so far considered reliable enough. The lower stability limit of the sapphirine + quartz assemblage in the system in question is possibly located at much lower P-T parameters: at least 835°C and ∼6 kbar. The sapphirine + kyanite assemblage can be stable at temperatures below 860°C and a pressure of ∼11 kbar, and the stability field of the sapphirine + olivine assemblage is narrow and constrained to temperatures no higher than ∼800°C.  相似文献

The enthalpies of solution of petrologically important phases in the system MgO-Al2O3-SiO 2 were measured in a melt of composition 2PbO · B2O3 at 970 ± 2K. The substances investigated included synthetic and natural (meteoritic) enstatite (MgSiO3), synthetic aluminous enstatite (MgSiO30.9Al2O30.1), synthetic and natural cordierite (Mg2Al4Si5O18), synthetic and natural sapphirine (approx. 7MgO·9Al2O3 · 3SiO2), synthetic spinel (MgAl2O4), natural sillimanite (Al2SiO5), synthetic forsterite (Mg2SiO4), synthetic pyrope (Mg3Al2Si3O12), natural quartz (SiO2), synthetic periclase (MgO) and corundum (Al2O3). Improvement in standardization of the calorimeter solvent made possible greater precision in this study than obtainable in former work in this laboratory on some of the same substances. The enthalpies of formation of enstatite, synthetic cordierite, forsterite and spinel are in reasonable agreement with values previously determined by solution calorimetry. The enthalpy of formation of enstatite is about 0.7 kcal less negative than the value for clinoenstatite resulting from the HF calorimetry of Torgesen and Sahama (J. Amer. Chem. Soc.70. 2156–2160, 1948), and is in accord with predictions based on analysis of published pyroxene equilibrium work. Aluminous enstatite with 10 wt.% Al2O3 shows an enthalpy of solution markedly lower than pure MgSiO3: the measurements lead to an estimate of the enthalpy of formation at 970 K for MgAl2SiO6 (Mg-Tschermak) orthopyroxene of + 9.4 ± 1.5 kcal/mole from MgSiO3 and Al2O3.Comparison of the enthalpies of formation of synthetic cordierite and anhydrous natural low-iron cordierite shows that they are energetically quite similar and that the synthetic cordierite is not likely to have large amounts of (Al, Si) tetrahedral disorder. Comparison of the enthalpies of formation of synthetic sapphirine and natural low-iron sapphirine shows, on the other hand, that the former is not a good stability model for the latter. The lower enthalpy of formation of the high-temperature synthetic sample is undoubtedly a consequence of cation disordering. The enthalpy of formation of natural sillimanite is considerably less negative than given by the tables of Robie andWaldbaum (U.S. Geol. Surv. Bull.1259 1968).The measured enthalpy of formation of synthetic pyrope is consistent with that deduced from published equilibrium diagrams in conjunction with the present measured enthalpy of formation of aluminous enstatite. Calculation of the entropy of synthetic pyrope from the present data yields surprisingly high values and suggests that synthetic pyrope is not a good stability model for natural pyrope-rich garnets. Hence, considerable doubt exists about the direct quantitative application of experimental diagrams involving pyropic garnet to discussions of the garnet stability field in the Earth's outer regions.

Crystallization of garnet in high-chromium restite formed under the conditions of partial melting in the spinel facies and subsequently subducted into the garnet depth facies was studied experimentally in the MgO–Al2O3–Cr2O3–SiO2 system. The crystallization of garnet and the dependence of its composition on the temperature and bulk composition of the system with low Al concentration were studied as well. Experiments in the knorringite–majorite–pyrope system with 5, 10, and 20 mol % Prp were carried out at 7 GPa. The phase associations for the starting composition of pure knorringite Mg3Cr2Si3O12 included chromiumbearing enstatite MgSiO3 (up to 3.2 wt % Cr2O3) and eskolaite Cr2O3. Addition of Al resulted in crystallization of high-chromium majoritic garnet. The portion of garnet in the samples always exceeded the concentration of pyrope in the starting composition owing to the formation of the complex majorite–knorringite–pyrope series of solid solutions. With increasing content of pyrope (from 5 to 20 mol %) and increasing temperature, the modal concentration of garnet increased significantly (from 6–12 to 22–37%). The garnet was characterized by high concentrations of the pyrope (23–80 mol %) and knorringite (22–70 mol %) components. The excess of Si (>3 f.u.) with decreasing Cr concentration provided evidence for the contribution of the majorite–knorringite trend to the variation in garnet composition. On the basis of the natural data, most of the garnets composing xenoliths of ultrabasic rocks in kimberlites and occurring as inclusions in diamonds are low-chromium; i.e., their protolith was not subjected to partial melting, at least in the spinel depth facies.  相似文献

The temperature effect on the exchange reaction Cr2O3(ol)=Cr2O3(px) was studied for coexisting olivine and both clino and ortho pyroxenes. The distribution of Cr between olivine and clinopyroxene in 31 coarse garnet lherzolites and 10 porphyroclastic garnet lherzolites from kinberlites, and in 17 coarse spinel lherzolites from basalts, obeys a van't Hoff relation (c.f. Stosch 1981) with the Wells two-pyroxene temperature: T(Kelvin)=8,787 (In D Cr+ 2.87) where D Cr(opx/ol)=wt.% Cr(clinopyroxene)/Cr(olivine). An analogous exchange for olivine and orthopyroxene with 0.7–1.6 wt.% Al2O3 in 41 garnet lherzolites from kimberlites shows considerable scatter about the following relation: T(Kelvin)=5,540/(ln D cr+1.86) where D cr(opx/ol)= wt.% Cr(orthopyroxene)/Cr(olivine). Spinel lherzolites and a garnet lherzolite from the Malaita alnöite do not obey the second relation. For orthopyroxene with 2.5–5.1 wt.% Al2O3, D cr(opx/ol) is 1.7 to 3 times higher, and for 0.1 wt.% Al2O3 is 2 times lower than for the garnet lherzolites. Experimental calibration is needed, especially to check the possible effect of Al on D cr(opx/ol).  相似文献

Experiments have been performed in the multicomponent (natural) bulk system to constrain the conditions of generation and differentiation of a K-rich group II kimberlite (now also referred to as orangeite). The group II composition examined was saturated in olivine, orthopyroxene, and garnet at near liquidus conditions in the pressure range 4 to 10 GPa. In the range 2 to 3 GPa, the liquidus phase was olivine only. The potassic nature of the melts in the bulk compositions studied was ensured by the absence of any K-bearing phase in the residual assemblage at P > 4 GPa. Phlogopite is destabilized toward higher pressures by a carbonation reaction of the type phlogopite + CO2 = enstatite + garnet + K2CO3 (liquid) + H2O leading to alkalic, carbonatitic liquids coexisting with a garnet-peridotite (harzburgite or lherzolite) residue over a wide pressure-temperature space at pressures in excess of 4 GPa. Evidently, CO2-bearing systems do not favor the stability of phlogopite and/or K-richterite amphibole at pressures in excess of 4 to 5 GPa, and it is suggested that the carbonate-bearing and potassic character of any mantle melt originating from this depth is most likely the product of a two-stage process: either a carbonate-bearing protolith is invaded by a potassic melt or fluid (probably supercritical), or a potassic protolith (after metasomatism) has been invaded by a carbonatite melt.  相似文献

In the system CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 (CMAS), equilibrium alumina contents of orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene, both coexisting with spinel + forsterite or spinel + anorthite, have been reversed in 16 runs at 1,300–1,400°C and 10.2–20.8 kbar, using PbO flux. The present data and the data of Perkins and Newton (1980) have been modeled using the Redlich-Kister equation. The resulting model satisfies most of the reversed data in the CMAS system, agrees very well with thermochemical measurements, and is consistent with the model for the enstatite-diopside join of Lindsley et al. (1981) and with the system MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 of Gasparik and Newton (1984). The present data, however, do not confirm the negative slopes of Al-isopleths in the spinel lherzolite field suggested by Dixon and Presnall (1980). The new model has been used to calculate a graphical two-pyroxene thermobarometer applicable to natural two-pyroxene assemblages closely approaching in composition the CMAS system.  相似文献

Abstract Sapphirine-bearing rocks occur in three conformable, metre-size lenses in intrusive quartzo-feldspathic orthogneisses in the Curaçà valley of the Archaean Caraiba complex of Brazil. In the lenses there are six different sapphirine-bearing rock types, which have the following phases (each containing phlogopite in addition): A: Sapphirine, orthopyroxene; B: Sapphirine, cordierite, orthopyroxene, spinel; C: Sapphirine, cordierite; D: Sapphirine, cordierite, orthopyroxene, quartz; E: Sapphirine, cordierite, orthopyroxene, sillimanite, quartz; F: Sapphirine, cordierite, K-feldspar, quartz. Neither sapphirine and quartz nor orthopyroxene and sillimanite have been found in contact, however. During mylonitization, introduction of silica into the three quartz-free rocks (which represent relict protolith material) gave rise to the three cordierite and quartz-bearing rocks. Stable parageneses in the more magnesian rocks were sapphirine–orthopyroxene and sapphirine–cordierite. In more iron-rich rocks, sapphirine–cordierite, sapphirine-cordierite–sillimanite, cordierite–sillimanite, sapphirine–cordierite–spinel–magnetite and quartz–cordierite–orthopyroxene were stable. The iron oxide content in sapphirine of the six rocks increases from an average of 2.0 to 10.5 wt % (total Fe as FeO) in the order: C,F–A,D–B,E. With increase in Fe there is an increase in recalculated Fe2O3 in sapphirine. The four rock types associated with the sapphirine-bearing lenses are: I: Orthopyroxene, cordierite, biotite, quartz, feldspar tonalitic to grandioritic gneiss; II: Biotite, quartz, feldspar gneiss; III: Orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, hornblende, plagioclase meta-norite; IV: Biotite, orthopyroxene, quartz, feldspar, garnet, cordierite, sillimanite granulite gneiss. The stable parageneses in type IV are orthopyroxene–cordierite–quartz, garnet–sillimanite–quartz and garnet–cordierite–sillimanite. Geothermobarometry suggests that the associated host rocks equilibrated at 720–750°C and 5.5–6.5 kbar. Petrogenetic grids for the FMASH and FMAFSH (FeO–MgO–Al2O3–Fe2O3–SiO2–H2O) model systems indicate that sapphirine-bearing assemblages without garnet were stabilized by a high Fe3+ content and a high XMg= (Mg/ (Mg+Fe2+)) under these P–T conditions.  相似文献
