It is unclear why the Pb, Nd, and Sr isotopic composition of the modern mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB) from the Indian Ocean is different from that of the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. A possible explanation for this is that the Indian MORB-type isotopic signature is a long-lived regional feature of the mantle, as evidently shown by the isotopic composition of the 350 Ma MORB-like Mian-Lue northern ophiolite, which was formed in the same region presently occupied by the Indian Ocean. However, this hypothesis is in conflict with the lack of Indian MORB-type isotopic signature in a number of 150 Ma Tethyan and Indian Ocean crusts. To further constrain the origin of the Indian MORB-type isotopic signature, we analyze the geochemical and Pb, Nd, and Sr isotopic composition of representative mafic rocks from four Tethyan ophiolites ranging in age from 90 to 360 Ma. The Sr isotopic composition of the samples is unreliable due to alteration, but the age-corrected Nd and Pb isotopic ratios and geochemical data indicate that these Tethyan rocks were derived from a geochemically depleted asthenospheric source that had a clear Indian MORB-type isotopic signature. We therefore conclude that the bulk of the Indian suboceanic mantle was most probably inherited from the Tethyan asthenosphere. A few regions in both the Tethyan and Indian Oceans, however, are most probably underlain by Pacific and North Atlantic MORB-type mantle (and vice-versa) because of the flow of the asthenosphere in response to tectonic plate reorganizations that lead to openings and closures of ocean basins. The Indian MORB-type isotopic signature of the western Pacific marginal basin crusts could be due to either flow of the Indian Ocean mantle into the western Pacific or to endogenous production of such an isotopic signature from delaminated East-Asian sublithospheric materials during closure of the Tethys Ocean.

New Sr- Nd- and Pb-isotopic and trace element data are presented on basalts from the Sulu and Celebes Basins, and the submerged Cagayan Ridge Arc (Western Pacific), recently sampled during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 124. Drilling has shown that the Sulu Basin developed about 18 Ma ago as a backarc basin, associated with the now submerged Cagayan Ridge Arc, whereas the Celebes Basin was generated about 43 Ma ago, contemporaneous with a general plate reorganisation in the Western Pacific, subsequently developing as an open ocean receiving pelagic sediments until the middle Miocene. In both basins, a late middle Miocene collision phase and the onset of volcanic activity on adjacent arcs in the late Miocene are recorded. Covariations between 87Sr/86Sr and 143Nd/144Nd show that the seafloor basalts from both the Sulu and Celebes Basins are isotopically similar to depleted Indian mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB), and distinct from East Pacific Rise MORB, defining a single negative correlation. The Cagayan Arc volcanics are different, in that they have distinctly lower ɛNd(T) for a given ɛSr(T), compared to Sulu and Celebes basalts. In the 207Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb versus 206Pb/204Pb diagrams, the Celebes, Sulu and Cagayan rocks all plot distinctly above the Northern Hemisphere Reference Line, with high Δ7/4 Pb (5.3–9.3) and D8/4 Pb (46.3–68.1) values. They define a single trend of radiogenic lead enrichment from Celebes through Sulu to Cagayan Ridge, within the Indian Ocean MORB data field. The data suggest that the overall chemical and isotopic features of the Sulu, Cagayan and Celebes rocks may be explained by partial melting of a depleted asthenospheric N-MORB-type (“normal”) mantle source with isotopic characteristics similar to those of the Indian Ocean MORB source. This asthenospheric source was slightly heterogeneous, giving rise to the Sr-Nd isotopic differences between the Celebes and Sulu basalts, and the Cagayan Ridge volcanics. In addition, a probably slab-derived component enriched in LILE and LREE is required to generate the elemental characteristics and low Nd(T) of the Cagayan Ridge island arc tholeiitic and calcalkaline lavas, and to contribute to a small extent in the backarc basalts of the Sulu Sea. The results of this study confirm and extend the widespread Indian Ocean MORB signature in the Western Pacific region. This signature could have been inherited by the Indian Ocean mantle itself during the rupture of Gondwanaland, when fragments of this mantle could have migrated towards the present position of the Celebes, Sulu and Cagayan sources. New geochemical data from the Cocos Plate constrain the composition of the input into the Central American subduction zone and demonstrate the extent of influence of the Galápagos Hotspot on the Cocos Plate. Samples include sediments and basalts from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1256 outboard of Nicaragua, gabbroic sills from ODP Sites 1039 and 1040, tholeiitic glasses from the Fisher Ridge off northwest Costa Rica, and basalts from the Galápagos Hotspot Track outboard of Central Costa Rica. Site 1256 basalts range from normal to enriched MORB in incompatible elements and have Pb and Nd isotopic compositions within the East Pacific Rise MORB field. The sediments have similar 206Pb/204Pb and only slightly more radiogenic 207Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb isotope ratios than the basalts. Altered samples from the subducting Galápagos Hotspot Track have similar Nd and Pb isotopic compositions to fresh Galápagos samples but have significantly higher Sr isotopic composition, indicating that the subduction input will have a distinct geochemical signature from Galápagos-type mantle material that may be present in the wedge beneath Costa Rica. Gabbroic sills from Sites 1039 and 1040 in East Pacific Rise (EPR) crust show evidence for influence of the Galápagos Hotspot ∼100 km beyond the morphological hotspot track.

Abstract Basaltic basement has been recovered by deep-sea drilling at seven sites on the linear Ninetyeast Ridge in the eastern Indian Ocean. Studies of the recovered lavas show that this ridge formed from ~ 82 to 38 Ma as a series of subaerial volcanoes that were created by the northward migration of the Indian Plate over a fixed magma source in the mantle. The Sr, Nd and Pb isotopic ratios of lavas from the Ninetyeast Ridge range widely, but they largely overlap with those of lavas from the Kerguelen Archipelago, thereby confirming previous inferences that the Kerguelen plume was an important magma source for the Ninetyeast Ridge. Particularly important are the ~ 81 Ma Ninetyeast Ridge lavas from DSDP Site 216 which has an anomalous subsidence history (Coffin 1992). These lavas are FeTi-rich tholeiitic basalts with isotopic ratios that overlap with those of highly alkalic, Upper Miocene lavas in the Kerguelen Archipelago. The isotopic characteristics of the latter which erupted in an intraplate setting have been proposed to be the purest expression of the Kerguelen plume (Weis et al. 1993a,b). Despite the overlap in isotopic ratios, there are important compositional differences between lavas erupted on the Ninetyeast Ridge and in the Kerguelen Archipelago. The Ninetyeast Ridge lavas are dominantly tholeiitic basalts with incompatible element abundance ratios, such as La/Yb and Zr/Nb, which are intermediate between those of Indian Ocean MORB (mid-ocean ridge basalt) and the transitional to alkalic basalts erupted in the Kerguelen Archipelago. These compositional differences reflect a much larger extent of melting for the Ninetyeast Ridge lavas, and the proximity of the plume to a spreading ridge axis. This tectonic setting contrasts with that of the recent alkalic lavas in the Kerguelen Archipelago which formed beneath the thick lithosphere of the Kerguelen Plateau. From ~ 82 to 38 Ma there was no simple, systematic temporal variation of Sr, Nd and Pb isotopic ratios in Ninetyeast Ridge lavas. Therefore all of the isotopic variability cannot be explained by aging of a compositionally uniform plume. Although Class et al. (1993) propose that some of the isotopic variations reflect such aging, we infer that most of the isotopic heterogeneity in lavas from the Ninetyeast Ridge and Kerguelen Archipelago can be explained by mixing of the Kerguelen plume with a depleted MORB-like mantle component. However, with this interpretation some of the youngest, 42–44 Ma, lavas from the southern Ninetyeast Ridge which have206pb/204Pb ratios exceeding those in Indian Ocean MORB and Kerguelen Archipelago lavas require a component with higher206Pb/204Pb, such as that expressed in lavas from St. Paul Island.

Site 1201D of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 195 recovered basalticand volcaniclastic units from the West Philippine Basin thatdocument the earliest history of the Izu–Bonin–Marianaconvergent margin. The stratigraphic section recovered at Site1201D includes 90 m of pillow basalts, representing the WestPhilippine Basin basement, overlain by 459 m of volcaniclasticturbidites that formed from detritus shed from the Eocene–Oligoceneproto-Izu–Bonin–Mariana island arc. Basement basaltsare normal mid-ocean ridge basalt (N-MORB), based on their abundancesof immobile trace elements, although fluid-mobile elements areenriched, similar to back-arc basin basalts (BABB). Sr, Nd,Pb and Hf isotopic compositions of the basement basalts aresimilar to those of basalts from other West Philippine Basinlocations, and show an overall Indian Ocean MORB signature, marked by high 208Pb/204Pb for a given 206Pb/204Pb and high176Hf/177Hf for a given 143Nd/144Nd. Trace element and isotopicdifferences between the basement and overlying arc-derived volcaniclasticsare best explained by the addition of subducted sediment orsediment melt, together with hydrous fluids from subducted oceaniccrust, into the mantle source of the arc lavas. In contrastto tectonic models suggesting that a mantle hotspot was a sourceof heat for the early Izu–Bonin–Mariana arc magmatism, the geochemical data do not support an enriched, ocean islandbasalt (OIB)-like source for either the basement basalts orthe arc volcanic section. The Lead, Neodymium and Strontium Isotopic Structure of Ocean Ridge Basalts
Pb-, Nd- and Sr-isotope compositions and U, Pb, Sm, Nd, Rb andSr concentrations are reported for samples of basaltic glassand altered substrates from spreading centres in the Atlantic,Indian and Pacific Oceans. Correlations are shown to exist between208, 207, 206Pb/204Pb ratios, and 87Sr/86Sr and 143Nd/144Ndratios in basaltic glasses, but they are dominated by samplesfrom the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Whereas basaltic glasses from EastPacific spreading centres exhibit smaller variability in Pb,Sr and Nd isotope compositions than Atlantic samples, seamountsamples from the E. Pacific have a similar range of Pb-isotopecompositions as Mid-Atlantic Ridge glasses. Contamination ofbasaltic magmas by altered oceanic crust or sediments is notconsidered to be of prime importance in determining the isotopicstructures of MORB glasses. It is proposed that the isotopicheterogeneity in the mantle beneath the Pacific and Atlanticis similar, but magma generation processes associated with fastspreading ridges of the East Pacific more effectively eradicateheterogeneities in the erupted basalts. Alteration of oceanic crust is further investigated with respectto the relative response of the U–Pb, Sm–Nd andRb–Sr systems, and the role of recycled oceanic crustin producing the mantle heterogeneities is evaluated.

A comparison of new and published geochemical characteristics of magmatism in the western and eastern Indian Ocean at the initial and recent stages of its evolution revealed several important differences between the mantle sources of basaltic melts from this ocean.
  1. The sources of basalts, from ancient rises and from flanks of the modern Central Indian Ridge within the western Indian Ocean contain an enriched component similar in composition to the source of the Réunion basalts (with radiogenic Pb and Sr and unradiogenic Nd), except for basalts from the Comores Islands, which exhibit a contribution from an enriched HIMU-like component.
  2. The modern rift lavas of spreading ridges display generally similar geochemical compositions. Several local isotopic anomalies are characterized by the presence of an EM2-like component. However, two anomalous areas with distinctly different enriched mantle sources were recognized in the westernmost part of the Southwestern Indian Ridge (SWIR). The enriched mantle source of the western SWIR tholeiites in the vicinity of the Bouvet Triple Junction has the isotopic ratios indicating a mixture of HIMU + EM2 in the source. The rift anomaly distinguished at 40° E displays the EM1 signature in the mantle source, which is characterized by relatively low 206Pb/204Pb (up to 17.0) and high 207Pb/204Pb, 208Pb/204Pb and 87Sr/86Sr. This source may be due to mixing with material from the continental lithosphere of the ancient continent Gondwana. The material from this source can be distinguished in magmas related to the Mesozoic plume activity in Antarctica, as well as in basalts from the eastern Indian Ocean rises, which were formed by the Kerguelen plume at 100–90 Ma.
  3. The geochemical heterogeneities identified in the ancient and present-day magmatic products from the western and eastern Indian Ocean are thought to reflect the geodynamic evolution of the region. In the eastern part of the ocean, the interaction of the evolving Kerguelen plume with the rift zones produced magmas with specific geochemical characteristics during the early opening of the ocean; such a dispersion of magma composition was not recognized in the western part of the ocean.

Chemical data of 39 fresh basaltic glasses from the East Pacific Rise (EPR) between 6 and 30°S and Pb, Sr, and Nd isotopic compositions of 12 basalt glasses are presented. Major and trace element data indicate a wide compositional range, including primitive basalts (Mg#=0.67) and highly evolved FeTi-basalts (Mg#=0.34) [molMg/(Mg+Fe2+)]. The compositional range can be attributed to low-pressure fractional crystallization. Fractionation-corrected major element concentrations provide evidence for varying mantle melting conditions. Calculations of the melting conditions suggest melt generation in a rising upper mantle column between 20 and 10 kbar, at temperatures between 1430 and 1280°C, and total degrees of partial melting between 17 and 20% by weight. Leached and hand-picked basalt glasses display large variations in 87Sr/86Sr (0.70235–0.70270), 143Nd/144Nd (0.51312–0.51323), and 206Pb/204Pb (18.064–18.665), but are similar to other N-type MORB from the EPR. The isotopic ratios of basalts from 13 to 23°S show strong correlations and delineate two systematic trends. From 23 to 17°S, 87Sr/86Sr and Pb isotope ratios increase and 143Nd/144Nd decrease in agreement with previous results (Mahoney et al. 1989). A reverse trend is indicated by basalts from 17 to 13°S. However, K/Ti and (La/Sm)N continuously increase from 23 to 13°S. This opposite behavior indicates a recent decoupling of isotopic and minor element ratios in the mantle between 13 and 17°S. North of 13.5°S (Garrett Fracture Zone), isotopic data show no systematic variation with ridge location and display an overall weaker covariation. The results suggest that the isotopic variations and ridge segmentation appear to be unrelated and that major ridge offsets apparently coincide with changes in mantle melting conditions (P, T, F) (F, degrees of melting). There is no evidence for a systematic relationship between calculated melting conditions and second order ridge segmentation. Our isotopic data provide further evidence for regionally confined chemical variations in the mantle at 5 to 30°S. We interpret the isotopic trends as reflecting melting of distinct smallvolume and old enriched mantle components. In contrast, variations in trace elements are attributed to young mantle differentiation processes.

Sr, Nd and Pb isotopic compositions of the Cenozoic basalts were analyzed from Baengnyeongdo Island, Jeongok, Ganseong, and Jejudo Island of Korea. They reveal relatively enriched Sr and Nd isotopic compositions (87Sr/86Sr = 0.70330∼0.70555, 143Nd/144Nd = 0.51298∼0.51256) compared with MORB.207Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb values of all the analyzed Korean basalts lie above the Northern Hemisphere Reference Line (NHRL) defined by Hart (1984). Pb isotopic compositions of basalts from Jejudo Islands (206Pb/204Pb = 18.61∼19.12, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.54∼15.69, 208Pb/204Pb = 38.98∼39.72) are significantly more radiogenic than the rest (206Pb/204Pb = 17.72∼18.03, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.44∼15.58, 208Pb/204Pb = 37.77∼38.64). The Cenozoic Korean basalts thus can be divided into two groups based on their Sr, Nd and Pb isotopic compositions. The north group reveals mixing between DMM and EM1 while the south group displays DMM-EM2 mixing. Such a distribution is the same as Chinese Cenozoic basalts and it can be interpreted that the subcontinental lithospheric mantle under Korea represents simple lateral continuation of the South and North China Blocks. We suggest that Korean continental collision zone cross the Korean Peninsula through the region between the north and south basalt groups of Korea.

Lavas from Heard Island, located on the Kerguelen Plateau inthe southern Indian Ocean, exhibit the largest range (e.g.,87Sr/86Sr=0.7047–0.7079) of isotopic compositions yetobserved on a single oceanic island. Isotopic compositions arewell correlated and are accompanied by systematic changes inincompatible trace element ratios, particularly those involvingNb. These variations are interpreted as resulting from mixingbetween two components. One is characterized by high 87Sr/86Sr,low 206Pb/204Pb and 143Nd/144Nd ratios, and negative Nb andEu anomalies, and is derived ultimately from the upper continentalcrust. The other has lower 87Sr/86Sr, and higher 206Pb/204Pband 143Nd/144Nd ratios, and lacks the depletions in Nb and Eu.Two possible compositions are considered for the low-87Sr/86Srcomponent of the source. The first is at the low-87Sr/86Sr endof the Heard Island data array, represented most closely bylavas from the Laurens Peninsula. However, trace element variationssuggest that these lavas might not be representive of the Heardplume. The second is close to the low-87Sr/86Sr end of the isotopicarray for lavas from the main volcano. In this case a lithosphericmantle origin is suggested for the Laurens Peninsula lavas. The relationships between isotopic data, major element compositions, and incompatible trace element ratios indicate that the continent-derivedmaterial is probably present in the mantle source, where itmakes a maximum contribution of <4 wt.% for all but one HeardIsland sample. However, if the Kerguelen Plateau is a submergedcontinental block, shallow-level contamination cannot be ruledout. The binary mixing model developed to explain the Heard Islandgeochemical variations is extended to include other Indian Oceanoceanic island and mid-ocean ridge basalts (OIB and MORB). Weshow that isotopic compositions of Indian Ocean OIB are consistentwith sampling of a regional reservoir in which the same twocomponents exist in variable proportions (generally 1–5wt.% of the continent-derived component). The distinctive isotopiccompositions of Indian Ocean MORB are consistent with mixingof a similar component into an Atlantic-or Pacific-like MORBmantle source. The relatively unradiogenic 206Pb/204Pb isotopiccompositions of these ‘enriched’ Indian Ocean mantlecomponents are unlike any present-day marine sediments and indicatethat their source has had 238U/204Pb ratios (µ) much lowerthan typical upper continental crust for > 1 Ga. These agespre-date the formation of Gondwana (600-130 Ma) and thereforedo not support sediment subduction beneath Gondwana as the causeof enrichment in the sub-Indian Ocean mantle. We propose thatthe enrichment of Indian Ocean OIB sources was due to subductionof upper-crustal material beneath a Proterozoic precursor ofGondwana at 1–2 Ga. The enrichment of the Indian OceanMORB sources could have had a similar origin, or could havebeen derived from sub-continental lithospheric mantle returnedto the asthenospheric mantle, perhaps during the break-up ofGondwana (200–130 Ma).

The DUPAL anomaly, a radiogenic isotope anomaly discovered in the Indian Ocean mantle, has been interpreted as due to a large-scale mantle heterogeneity. To provide new constraints on the DUPAL origin, we analyzed isotope ratios of Li, Sr, and Nd in fresh N-MORB glasses recovered from the Rodrigues Triple Junction in the Indian Ocean, and from the North Atlantic. The Li isotopic compositions of the Indian Ocean DUPAL N-MORBs were comparable to those of the North Atlantic non-DUPAL N-MORBs. The source of the DUPAL signature in Indian Ocean MORBs and the E-MORB-type enriched mantle source have quite different Li isotopic compositions. The 143Nd/144Nd values of both sources are significantly lower than those of the North Atlantic N-MORBs. The δ7Li values of most oceanic island basalts with similar low 143Nd/144Nd signatures are also higher than those of the North Atlantic N-MORBs, except for several Koolau lavas. The Li isotope results support the recent proposal that significant amounts of recycled lower continental crust might produce the radiogenic isotope signatures of the Indian Ocean DUPAL source.

Subduction related basalts display wide ranges in large ion lithophile element ratios (e.g., Rb/Ba and Rb/ Sr) which are unlikely to result from mixing, but suggest a role for small degree partial melting of a relatively Rb-poor mantle wedge source. However, these variations do not correlate with other trace element criteria, such as the depletions of high field strength elements (HFSE) and light rare earth elements (LREE) relative to the LILE, which characterise subduction related magmatism. Integration of radiogenic isotope and trace element data demonstrates that the elemental enrichment cannot be simply related to two component mixtures inferred from isotopic variations. Thus a minimum of three components is required to describe the geochemistry of subduction zone basalts. Two are subduction related: high Sr/Nd material is derived from the dehydration of subducted basaltic ocean crust, and a low Sr/Nd component is thought to be from subducted terrigenous sediment. The third component is in the mantle wedge, it is usually similar to the source of MORB, particularly in its isotopic composition. However, in some cases, notably continental areas, more enriched mantle wedge material with relatively high 87Sr/86Sr, low 143Nd/144Nd and elevated incompatible trace element contents may be involved Mixing of these three components is capable of producing both the entire range of Sr, Nd and Pb isotope signatures observed in destructive margin basalts, and their distinctive trace element compositions. The isotope differences between Atlantic and Pacific island arc basalts are attributed to the isotope compositions of sediments in the two oceans.

The Tabar–Lihir–Tanga–Feni (TLTF) islands of Papua New Guinea mainly comprise high-K calc-alkaline and silica undersaturated alkaline rocks that have geochemical features typical for subduction-related magmatism. Numerous sedimentary, mafic, and ultramafic xenoliths recovered from Tubaf seamount, located on the flank of Lihir Island, provide a unique opportunity to study the elemental and isotopic composition of the crust and mantle wedge beneath the arc and to evaluate their relationships to the arc magmatism in the region. The sedimentary and mafic xenoliths show that the crust under the islands is composed of sedimentary sequences and oceanic crust with Pacific affinity. A majority of the ultramafic xenoliths contain features indicating wide spread metasomatism in the mantle wedge under the TLTF arc. Leaching experiments reveal that the metasomatized ultramafic xenoliths contain discrete labile phases that can account for up to 50% or more of elements such as Cu, Zn, Rb, U, Pb, and light REE (rare-earth elements), most likely introduced in the xenoliths via hydrous fluids released from a subducted slab. The leaching experiments demonstrated that the light REE enrichment pattern can be more or less removed from the metasomatized xenoliths and the residual phases exhibit REE patterns that range from flat to light REE depleted. Sr–Nd isotopic data for the ultramafic residues show a coupled behavior of increasing 87Sr/86Sr with decreasing 143Nd/144Nd ratios. The labile phases in the ultramafic xenoliths, represented by the leachates, show decoupling between Sr and Nd with distinctly more radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr than the residues. Both leachates and residues exhibit very wide range in their Pb isotopic compositions, indicating the involvement of three components in the mantle wedge under the TLTF islands. Two of the components can be identified as Pacific Oceanic mantle and Pacific sediments. Some of the ultramafic samples and clinopyroxene separates, however, exhibit relatively low 206Pb/204Pb at elevated 207Pb/204Pb suggesting that the third component is either Indian Ocean-type mantle or Australian subcontinental lithospheric mantle. Geochemical data from the ultramafic xenoliths indicate that although the mantle wedge in the area was extensively metasomatized, it did not significantly contribute to the isotopic and incompatible trace element compositions of TLTF lavas. Compared to the mantle samples, the TLTF lavas have very restricted Pb isotopic compositions that lie within the Pacific MORB range, indicating that magma compositions were dominated by melts released from a stalled subducted slab with Pacific MORB affinity. Interaction of slab melts with depleted peridotitic component in the mantle wedge, followed by crystal fractionation most likely generated the geochemical characteristics of the lavas in the area.
