Sediment and water samples from 12 saline pans on the semi-arid west coast of South Africa were analysed to determine the origin of salts and geochemical evolution of water in the pans. Pans in the area can be subdivided into large, gypsiferous coastal pans with 79–150 g/kg total dissolved salt (TDS), small inland brackish to saline (2–64 g/kg TDS) pans and small inland brine (168-531 g/kg TDS) pans that have a layer of black sulphidic mud below a halite crust. The salinity of coastal pan waters varies with the seasonal influx of dilute runoff and dissolution of relict Pleistocene marine evaporite deposits. In contrast, inland pans are local topographic depressions, bordered on the north by downslope lunette dunes, where solutes are concentrated by evaporation of runoff, throughflow and groundwater seepage. The composition of runoff and seepage inflow waters is determined by modification of coastal rainfall by weathering, calcite precipitation and ion exchange reactions in the predominantly granitic catchment soils. Evaporation of pan waters leads to precipitation of calcite, Mg–calcite, dolomite, gypsum and halite in a distinct stratigraphic succession in pan sediments. Bicarbonate limits carbonate precipitation, Ca limits gypsum precipitation and Na limits halite precipitation. Dolomitisation of calcite is enhanced by the high Mg/Ca ratio of brine pan waters. Brine pan waters evolve seasonally from Na–Cl dominated brines in the wet winter months to Mg–Cl dominated brines in the dry summer months, when 5–20 cm thick halite crusts cover pan surfaces. Pan formation was probably initiated during a drier climate period in the early Holocene. More recent replacement of natural vegetation by cultivated land may have accelerated salt accumulation in the pans.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the storm surge caused by Typhoon Hato, which severely affected Macau, Hong Kong, and other coastal cities in China on 23 August 2017. A typhoon and storm surge coupling model demonstrated that the maximum storm surge height reached nearly 2.5?m along the coast of Macau, while that in Hong Kong was slightly below 2?m. Furthermore, a field survey of urban flooding revealed evidence of a 2.25-m inundation in downtown Macau and a 0.55-m inundation on Lantau Island, Hong Kong, which were likely exacerbated by a combination of storm surge, heavy rainfall, and surface water runoff over a complex hilly terrain. Significant wave overtopping and runup also occurred in beach and port areas. A typhoon track analysis confirmed that several comparably strong typhoons have followed similar ESE to WNW trajectories and made landfall in the Pearl River Delta in the last few decades. Although Hato was not the strongest of these storms, its forward speed of about 32.5?km/h was remarkably faster than those of other comparable typhoons. Higher levels of storm signal warnings were issued earlier in Hong Kong than in Macau, raising questions about the appropriate timing of warnings in these two nearby areas. Our analysis of the storm’s pattern suggests that both regions’ decisions regarding signal issuance could be considered reasonable or at least cannot be simply blamed, given the rapid motion and intensification of Hato and the associated economic risks at stake.  相似文献

Widespread Mesozoic igneous rocks in Hong Kong form part of the giant Mesozoic igneous province in Southeastern China. The Tuen Mun Formation in the Northwestern New Territories is the oldest volcanic unit known in Hong Kong. This formation contains a lower unit composed of dominantly volcanic breccia, minor dacite, rhyolite, and tuff, and an upper unit of basaltic andesitic to andesitic lava. The volcanic rocks from the lower unit contain zircon grains with a mean U–Pb age of 163.4 ± 0.9 Ma, synchronous with the adjacent Tsuen Wan Volcanic Group in the region. Good inter-correlations between different elements in the Harker diagrams indicate that the volcanic rocks with high SiO2 (e.g. >65 wt.%) are essentially physical mixtures of intermediate magmas and various xenoliths of country rocks, characterizing the palaeo-volcanic plug facies. Preservation of large amounts of xenoliths of sandstone and marble in the volcanic rocks, which is revealed both in field and under microscopic observation, further supports this hypothesis. The original andesitic magma, represented by the intermediate volcanic rocks with SiO2 <65 wt.%, exhibit enrichments of LILEs and LREEs compared with N-MORB, but have negative Nb–Ta–Ti anomalies in the primitive-mantle normalized diagram, similar to those derived from metasomatized mantle wedge in an arc environment. Large ranges of SiO2, MgO, and CaO contents, and negative Eu and Ce anomalies are consistent with significant fractional crystallization of likely olivine/pyroxene and plagioclase. We propose that during the Late Jurassic subduction of the Palaeo-Pacific Plate underneath the coastal continental arc in Southeast China generated prolonged and cyclic volcanism in the northern part of Hong Kong.  相似文献

Modern, ambient tritium concentrations in precipitation are lower and more temporally consistent now that they have recovered from the historic thermonuclear bomb peak of the mid-1960s. With the bomb peak no longer the overriding influence on atmospheric tritium concentrations, anthropogenic point sources, such as nuclear-generating stations (NGS), have the largest influence, though the extent and temporal variability of this influence remains uncharacterized. The lack of precipitation monitoring locations means that spatial trends in tritium concentrations in precipitation are unknown. To address this data gap, tritium concentrations in shallow modern groundwater are interpolated throughout southern Ontario (Canada), at the center of the Great Lakes Basin, and the interpolation is tested as a precipitation proxy with a statistical comparison that shows good agreement between the shallow groundwater and precipitation datasets. The shallow groundwater tritium interpolation is used to delineate the extent of NGS influence as representing 66% of the study area. Recharge timings in the subcropping bedrock aquifers of the study area are interpreted qualitatively in areas outside of NGS influence to be primarily a mix of pre-bomb and modern recharge, with no indication of peak recharge levels remaining. The influence of drift thickness on the proportion of tritium-dead versus tritium-live samples is observed spatially and confirmed by comparing data distributions. The oldest waters (pre-1953) tend to occur in subcropping bedrock aquifers underlying the thickest sediment packages.

香港地区隶属于中国板内地震区中的东南沿海块缘地震带。港-九块体为晚中生代至早第三纪以来以持续稳定上升为主的块体, 块体活动性明显地低于其周边相对下沉的中新生代盆地。为此, 赋予港-九块体为最大可信震级M=5.5级潜在震源区, 而其周边中新生代断陷盆地则为最大可信震级M6.0潜在震源。从大陆地震构造成因的环境、潜在震源可信震级范围M=5.0~7.5和近源地震动饱和等三个方面的可比性, 结合中国大陆地震震源破裂尺度和地震烈度影响场, 所建立的反映中国地震构造和震源破裂及地震烈度影响场特点的PGA和反应谱地震动衰减预测关系式可用于香港地区。以50%概率时的中值对中国强震记录的对比, 本研究所提供的经验期望预测关系式, 能包络实际的资料。因此, 用此地震动衰减预测模式对香港地区地震危险性进行评估, 将会得到相对保守地震动预测值。通过香港地区基岩地震动危险性分析和计算, 参照中国大陆地震设防标准, 进行了基岩设计参数确定和区划。以年概率P=0.02、P=0.002、P=0.0004三个概率标准, 对应的地震动重复周期大约分别约为50a, 500a, 2500a的基岩PGA和反应谱, 作为香港地区基岩上构筑物和建筑物可选的基  相似文献

Variations in environmental tritium and moisture content with depth was measured at three sites in sandy-loam and sandy-clay-loam soils, sampled near Hyderabad in May 1974. The tritium input function for precipitation around Hyderabad for the years 1969 to 1973 was determined through measurements on available rain samples and through extrapolation of strontium-90 data for HASL network station at Rawalpindi. Three peaks noticed in the tritium input function and probably caused by Chinese thermonuclear tests in 1970, 1971 and 1972, could be matched with those sequentially identified in the soil profiles. This identification has helped in dating the soil moisture and in calculation of average annual recharge to groundwater. The recharge was found to be 15·4 cm and 14·6 cm for sandy-loam and 11·1 cm for sandy-clay-loam soils.  相似文献

The isotopic composition of lead was measured in Mesozoic andCenozoic igneous rocks (including volcanic glasses, olivinebasalts, and potassium feldspars from granitic rocks) of thecoastal region (California, Oregon, and Washington)-where meltingis possible at the bottom of a Phanerozoic sedimentary pilel—landin similar rocks of the continental interior region (Rocky Mountainprovinces, southwestern New Mexico, South Dakota, and Texas)—where Precambrian rocks are shallow or surround the Mesozoicand Cenozoic igneous rocks at the surface. The coastal region is typified by a narrow range in lead isotopiccomposition and by isotope ratios more radiogenic than expectedfrom closed system models (J type). The continental interiorregion is typified by a broad range in lead isotopic composition,even within an individual magmatic complex such as the Boulderbatholith, and by at least one isotope ratio that is less radiogenicthan expected from closed system models (B type) and than foundin the coastal region. If, as suggested by available data in the literature, most Precambrianand Paleozoic granitic rocks have leads more radiogenic thanclosed system models predict by the time of the Cenozoic Era,granitic rocks, in the continental interior region at least,cannot form by complete melting of older granitic rocks. Therocks may have been formed by one of the following mechanisms(in the order of the author‘s preference): (1) Differentiationfrom or partial melting of a basaltic-gabbroic parent coupledwith crustal assimilation. (2) Differentiation or partial meltingfrom a basaltic-gabbroic parent having U/Pb and Th/Pb characteristicsin the continental interior different from those of the coastalregions and ocean basins. (3) Partial melting of upper crustalrocks. It is difficult to choose between mechanisms 1 and 2;mechanism 3 appears to be in disagreement with results of workon Rb-Sr and therefore appears to be less likely than the othertwo. The differences in isotopic characteristics of the igneousrocks in the coastal and continental interior regions can beexplained (1) if the predominant crustal assimilation takesplace in the upper crust through partial assimilation of Phanerozoicor Preqambrian rocks, whichever happen to be present near thesurface in the area or, (2) if some other mechanism occurred,such as partial melting of the mantle in coastal regions andpartial melting of the lower crust in the interior regi  相似文献

为了研究中蒙俄经济走廊沿海与内陆地区归一化植被指数(NDVI)的分布特征,利用MOD13Q1 NDVI数据集、MERRA2气象再分析数据和AVHRR土地覆盖数据,以中蒙俄经济走廊研究区内2种代表性植被(林地和树木茂盛的草地)为例,采用回归分析法和相关性分析法研究了近年来研究区NDVI在不同纬度、距海岸线不同距离及不同时间的变化特征,并分析了气温与降水对NDVI的影响。结果表明:2015—2019年内5月下旬—9月,沿海地区植被生长状态基本优于内陆地区,从距离海岸线500 km左右开始,NDVI明显下降;沿海地区(0~500 km)与内陆地区NDVI在时间变化上也略有不同,沿海地区2种代表性植被的NDVI时序变化模型拟合效果较好。受沿海与内陆地区降水、气温差异影响,在植被生长顶峰期(0719—0723),随着纬度上升,沿海与内陆地区NDVI差异逐渐减小:沿海地区NDVI在上升期比内陆地区约提前1个月进入饱和,下降期滞后约1个月;低纬度地区2种植被对降水量更为敏感,相关系数最高为0.393(显著性水平P<0.01),而高纬度地区两种植被对气温更为敏感,相关系数最高为0.534(P<0.01)。  相似文献

To deeply understand the micro-/mesoscale dynamic characteristics of the torrential rain process in Urumqi and improve the levels of torrential rain monitoring, forecasting and early warning, this paper analyzed the wind profile features and related scientific problems of three typical torrential rain events seen in 2013–2015 in this region. The research results suggested that: (1) Radar wind profiler can record in detail the movement condition of the atmosphere during the process of torrential rains. Carrying out detailed analyses on the wind profile data is conductive to the improvement in monitoring, forecasting and warning to torrential rain event at a single observation station. (2) When Urumqi experiences heavy rain weather, noticeable wind shear is usually observed above the observation station. In the upper air, it is southwest wind, while in the lower air it is northwest wind, which is the typical wind profile pattern for heavy rain events in the Urumqi region. (3) Obvious northwest low-level jet stream is found to go together with precipitation, and the jet is positively correlated with precipitation intensity. The velocity of low-level jet stream greatly impacts the amount and intensity of precipitation. (4) The rainstorm weather phenomena are clearly presented by the time–height chart of radar reflectivity factors. The high reflectivity values correspond positively to the height range of cloud–rain particles as well as the duration and intensity of precipitation, so it can be used as a reference index of precipitation monitoring and early warning. In a word, this research deepens on the recognition to the micro-/mesoscale weather systems during the process of heavy rains in Urumqi. Moreover, it would contribute to the application improvement of wind profiler data in analyzing the heavy rainfalls in this region.  相似文献

Many coastal zones around the world have irregular precipitation throughout the year. This results in discontinuous natural recharge of coastal aquifers, which affects the size of freshwater lenses present in sandy deposits. Temperature data for the period 1960–1990 from LocClim (local climate estimator) and those obtained from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) SRES A1b scenario for 2070–2100, have been used to calculate the potential evapotranspiration with the Thornthwaite method. Potential recharge (difference between precipitation and potential evapotranspiration) was defined at 12 locations: Ameland (The Netherlands), Auckland and Wellington (New Zealand); Hong Kong (China); Ravenna (Italy), Mekong (Vietnam), Mumbai (India), New Jersey (USA), Nile Delta (Egypt), Kobe and Tokyo (Japan), and Singapore. The influence of variable/discontinuous recharge on the size of freshwater lenses was simulated with the SEAWAT model. The discrepancy between models with continuous and with discontinuous recharge is relatively small in areas where the total annual recharge is low (258–616 mm/year); but in places with Monsoon-dominated climate (e.g. Mumbai, with recharge up to 1,686 mm/year), the difference in freshwater-lens thickness between the discontinuous and the continuous model is larger (up to 5 m) and thus important to consider in numerical models that estimate freshwater availability.  相似文献

乌鲁木齐河是我国西北地区典型的降水、冰川和地下水综合补给的内陆河,对其水资源的研究不仅是西北寒区旱区水环境和水资源研究的热点,而且对区域生态环境改善和经济可持续发展具有重要意义。乌鲁木齐河水文水资源的研究内容十分广泛,并取得了很多高水平的学术成果。从高山区气候变化与冰冻圈的相互影响,山区降水变化与径流的相互影响,出山口径流对气候变化的响应以及洪灾、致灾因子分析,流域内同位素、树轮气候和水环境研究等四个方面总结了相关研究。结果表明:(1)乌鲁木齐河上游气候趋于暖湿。气温的升高很大程度上受冬季气温大幅度升高影响,气温对高山区冰川积雪的影响要大于降水;冬季负积温也加快了冻土的消融;气温和降水的变化导致乌鲁木齐河上游河段冰川后退加速,积雪融化、雪线上升,冻土活动层增厚。(2)乌鲁木齐河流域降水量和降水变化速率具有明显的垂直特征,在中高山地区降水量和降水变率较大;山区降水还具有年代际特征,20世纪90年代以来,山区降水量呈现增加趋势并促进了山区径流量的增加。(3)降水量和冰川融雪量的增加,很大程度上加大了乌鲁木齐河流域山区的径流量,使得出山口区域洪水灾害的发生频率增加。(4)同位素分析的运用对探索径流形成和转化的机理具有重要意义。树轮研究为乌鲁木齐河流域气候变化序列的重建提供了技术手段。今后,乌鲁木齐河水资源承载力、水循环过程和水污染问题,是区域实现生态环境建设和可持续发展的重要研究内容。  相似文献

As healthcare systems around the world are facing increasing physician shortages, more physicians are migrating from low to high income countries. Differences in medical education and international interaction may have significant effect on physician flows. The Chinese Medical Graduates (CMGs) in the US present an interesting case to examine this effect. This paper evaluated the current number and historical trends of CMGs in the US from mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong comparing their differences and similarities in terms of demographic and geographic characteristics. Since 2000, the number of CMGs in the US showed a consistent upward trend at a rate of approximately 206 additional graduates per year. In 2010, there were 8,797 CMGs in the US. Compared to CMGs from mainland China, CMGs from Taiwan and Hong Kong were much older. Much larger proportion of Taiwan and Hong Kong CMGs were male. However, they were more likely to practice in solo settings than mainland CMGs. The vast majority of CMGs are concentrated in urban areas and no significant differences were found for their distributions in underserved areas. However, a larger proportion of Taiwan and Hong Kong CMGs were in western coastal states; whereas a larger proportion of mainland CMGs were located in eastern coastal states. Fluctuations in CMG numbers in the US reflect the significant differences within the medical education systems among the three. The seemingly homogenous CMGs in the US do show significant differences. Given the magnitude and historical trends of migration of CMGs to the US, further exploration of its causes and impact is needed.  相似文献

We reconstruct the history of denudation and landscape evolution of the northern East- Brazilian continental margin using apatite fission-track thermochronology and thermal history modeling. This part of the Brazilian Atlantic margin is morphologically characterized by inland and coastal plateaus surrounding a wide low-lying inland region, the Sertaneja Depression. The apatite fission track ages and mean track lengths vary from 39 ± 4 to 350 ± 57 Ma and from 10.0 ± 0.3 to 14.2 ± 0.2 μm, respectively, implying a protracted history of spatially variable denudation since the Permian at relatively low rates (<50 m My−1). The Sertaneja Depression and inland plateaus record Permian-Early Jurassic (300–180 Ma) denudation that precedes rifting of the margin by > 60 Myrs. In contrast, the coastal regions record up to 2.5 km of Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous (150–120 Ma) denudation, coeval with rifting of the margin. The samples from elevated coastal regions, the Borborema Plateau and the Mantiqueira Range, record cooling from temperatures above 120 °C since the Late Cretaceous extending to the Cenozoic. We interpret this denudation as related to post-rift uplift of these parts of the margin, possibly resulting from compressional stresses transmitted from the Andes and/or magmatism at that time. Several samples from these areas also record accelerated Neogene (<30 Ma) cooling, which may record landscape response to a change from a tropical to a more erosive semi-arid climate during this time. The inferred denudation history is consistent with the offshore sedimentary record, but not with evolutionary scenarios inferred from the recognition of “planation surfaces” on the margin. The denudation history of the northeastern Brazilian margin implies a control of pre-, syn- and post-rift tectonic and climatic events on landscape evolution.  相似文献

Based on the micro level data, this paper examined the spatial changes of Chinese manufacturing industries during 2002–2007. Liberalized and globalized industries are largely concentrated in the coastal region while low technology, resource-based and protected industries are widely dispersed in the inland regions. Some labor-intensive industries in the coastal region encountered congestion effects and are relocated to the central region. Statistical results indicate that industrial enterprises have significantly benefited from the geographical proximity of related enterprises. The agglomeration effects however differ across regions and sectors. The coastal region enjoys both localization and urbanization economies. The western region has no significant localization economies while the central region has no evidence of urbanization economies. The Capital Region enjoys urbanization economies to a certain degree. Both the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta have the benefits of agglomeration. The further agglomeration in the PRD however would generate congestion effects. Although labor-intensive industries gain from agglomeration effects they are more likely to suffer from the congestion effects of related enterprises. The empirical findings indicate that agglomeration effects are not pervasive in transitional economies like China. Industrial agglomeration would contribute to productivity improvement only in a globalized and liberalized environment.  相似文献

可降水量是估算可能最大降水(PMP)的一个重要中间量。为验证不同方法推求可降水量的准确性,利用1998~2010年东南沿海五省(自治区)及香港地区共13个探空站和地面露点资料,分别采用3种不同方法(探空法、经验公式法和假绝热法)计算各站的大气可降水量,并对三种估算方法的结果进行比较。结果表明:经验公式法求得可降水量最小,探空法次之,假绝热法求得结果最大,偏差随着纬度变化。纬度越低,假绝热法推求的可降水量相对误差越大,且在有降水日时的偏差更为明显;经验公式法和假绝热法得到的结果均与探空法的可降水量相关性较强;三种求算方法得到的大气可降水量年内变化基本一致。建议在PMP估算中,利用地面最大12 h持续露点温度通过假绝热法推求可降水量时,应考虑纬度校正。  相似文献

提出了湿度效应的概念,即降水中稳定同位素比率与大气的温度露点差ΔTd存在显著的正相关关系.对两个气候特征完全不同的取样站乌鲁木齐和昆明降水中δ18O与温度露点差之间的关系进行了分析,尽管两站的δ18O与ΔTd的季节变化存在差异,但它们的湿度效应是显著的.利用稳定同位素动力分馏模型并根据500hPa月平均温度的季节分布对昆明站云中凝结物中δ18O进行了模拟,模拟的月平均δ18O与月平均温度的变化具有非常好的一致性,说明昆明站云中凝结物中的氧稳定同位素具有温度效应.这个结果与地面降水中氧稳定同位素的降水量效应截然不同.昆明站降水中δ18O一定程度上指示大气的干湿状况,同时也间接地指示降水量的多寡或季风的强弱.湿度效应的存在,影响降落雨滴中稳定同位素蒸发富集的强度以及雨滴与大气之间稳定同位素物质迁移的方向.它不仅改变降水中稳定同位素比率的大小,也改变其季节分布的特点.  相似文献

Groundwater in the Van coastal aquifer is one of the main sources of potable, industrial and irrigational water in Van City, because of its semi-arid climate. Groundwater extraction has been in excess of replenishment owing to increased agricultural and economic activities and a growing population during the last 20 years. A hydrochemical survey of the Van aquifer provided data on the groundwater chemistry patterns and the main mineralization processes. The main processes influencing the groundwater chemistry are salinisation from salt-water intrusion, silicate mineral dissolution, cation exchange and human activity. Deterioration in water quality has resulted from intrusion of the salt water of Lake Van along the coastal regions into the Van plain. At present, the mixing rate of salt water in the Van aquifer is between 1 and 5.5% and salt water has already invaded about 5 km inland in the iskele and the airport region.  相似文献

小冰期是过去一千年中全球气候变化的重要事件之一。关于小冰期时中国季风区和西风影响区气候变化的对比研究众多,但是缺乏中国南方地区降水模式时空差异的研究,难以了解中国南方地区降水变化规律。为了系统地了解小冰期时中国南方地区降水的复杂性,本文将中国南方地区划分为东南—华南沿海地区、中部地区以及西南地区三个区域,总共选取了19条高分辨率的古气候记录进行对比研究,主要有以下几点认识:(1)相对于中世纪暖期而言,小冰期期间中国南方东南—华南沿海地区的气候偏湿,这可能与雨带在中国南方的滞留时间延长和沿海地区受台风的影响增强有关。(2)中国中部地区秦岭南麓和神农架高山林区在小冰期时期主要呈"冷湿"的模式,差异在于秦岭南麓区域主要在小冰期中后期偏湿,这与中部其他区域偏"冷干"的模式不同。这种区域差异可能是由于地形地势和大气环流的复杂性导致。(3)中国西南地区受印度夏季风和东亚夏季风的共同影响,且该区域地形复杂,其气候变化在小冰期时期存在更加明显的空间差异,没有呈现出比较一致的降水模式。与小冰期期间的降水变化不同的是,近30年东南—华南沿海地区除了台湾和雷州半岛,其他区域降水明显减少,可能受气温和人类活动等因素的影响。通过结合高分辨率的古气候记录,我们系统分析了中国南方小冰期的干湿模式在时空上的差异及其可能的影响因子,这对于认识小冰期时中国南方不同区域降水的复杂性及未来旱涝灾害的防控具有一定意义。  相似文献
