The presence of arsenic (As) in groundwater and its effect on human health has become an issue of serious concern in recent
years. The present study assessed the groundwater quality of the Bishnupur District, Manipur, with respect to drinking water
standards. Higher concentrations of pH, iron and phosphate were observed at several locations. Phosphate and iron levels were
highest in the pre-monsoon, followed by monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. The arsenic concentrations were highest during post-monsoon
(1–200 μg L−1) as compared to pre-monsoon (1–108 μg L−1) and monsoon (2–99 μg L−1). Kwakta and Ngakhalawai show higher levels of arsenic concentration as compared to the prescribed World Health Organization
(WHO) and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) norms. Arsenic showed a strong positive correlation with phosphate and negative
correlation with sulphate, suggesting a partial influence of anthropogenic sources. The study suggests that the Bishnupur
area has an arsenic contamination problem, which is expected to increase in the near future. 相似文献

Among several salt lakes in the Thar Desert of western India, the Sambhar is the largest lake producing about 2 × 105 tons of salt (NaCl) annually. The “lake system” (lake waters, inflowing river waters, and sub-surface brines) provides a
unique setting to study the geo-chemical behavior of uranium isotopes (238U, 234U) in conjunction with the evolution of brines over the annual wetting and evaporation cycles. The concentration of 238U and the total dissolved solids (TDS) in lake water increase from ~8 μg L−1 and ~8 g L−1 in monsoon to ~1,400 μg L−1 and 370 g L−1, respectively, during summer time. The U/TDS ratio (~1 μg g−1 salt) and the 234U/238U activity ratio (1.65 ± 0.05), however, remain almost unchanged throughout the year, except when U/TDS ratio approaches to
3.8 at/or beyond halite crystallization. These observations suggest that uranium behaves conservatively in the lake waters
during the annual cycle of evaporation. Also, uranium and salt content (TDS) are intimately coupled, which has been used to
infer the origin and source of salt in the lake basin. Furthermore, near uniform ratios in evaporating lake waters, when compared
to the ratio in seawater (~0.1 μg g−1 salt and 1.14 ± 0.02, respectively), imply that aeolian transport of marine salts is unlikely to be significant source of
salt to the lake in the present-day hydrologic conditions. This inference is further consistent with the chemical composition
of wet-precipitation occurring in and around the Sambhar lake. The seasonal streams feeding the lake and groundwaters (within
the lake’s periphery) have distinctly different ratios of U/TDS (2–69 μg g−1 salt) and 234U/238U (1.15–2.26) compared to those in the lake. The average U/TDS ratio of ~1 μg g−1 salt in lake waters and ~19 μg g−1 salt in river waters suggest dilution of the uranium content by the recycled salt and/or removal processes presently operating
in the lake during the extraction of salt for commercial use. Based on mass-balance calculations, a conservative estimate
of "uranium sink" (in the form of bittern crust) accounts for ~5 tons year−1 from the lake basin, an estimate similar to its input flux from rivers, i.e., 4.4 tons year−1. 相似文献

Phytoplankton Biomass and Production in Subtropical Hong Kong Waters: Influence of the Pearl River Outflow 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The size-fractionated phytoplankton biomass and primary production were investigated in four contrasting areas of Hong Kong
waters in 2006. Phytoplankton biomass and production varied seasonally in response to the influence of the Pearl River discharge.
In the dry season, the phytoplankton biomass and production were low (<42 mg chl m−2 and <1.8 g C m−2 day−1) in all four areas, due to low temperatures and dilution and reduced light availability due to strong vertical mixing. In
contrast, in the wet season, in the river-impacted western areas, the phytoplankton biomass and production increased greater
than five-fold compared to the dry season, especially in summer. In summer, algal biomass was 15-fold higher than in winter,
and the mean integrated primary productivity (IPP) was 9 g C m−2 day−1 in southern waters due to strong stratification, high temperatures, light availability, and nutrient input from the Pearl
River estuary. However, in the highly flushed western waters, chl a and IPP were lower (<30 mg m−2 and 4 g C m−2 day−1, respectively) due to dilution. The maximal algal biomass and primary production occurred in southern waters with strong
stratification and less flushing. Spring blooms (>10 μg chl a L−1) rarely occurred despite the high chl-specific photosynthetic rate (mostly >10 μg C μg chl a
−1 day−1) as the accumulation of algal biomass was restricted by active physical processes (e.g., strong vertical mixing and freshwater
dilution). Phytoplankton biomass and production were mostly dominated by the >5-μm size fraction all year except in eastern
waters during spring and mostly composed of fast-growing chain-forming diatoms. In the stratified southern waters in summer,
the largest algal blooms occurred in part due to high nutrient inputs from the Pearl River estuary. 相似文献

Source and distribution of trace metals and nutrients in Narmada and Tapti river basins,India 总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
The study was designed to establish the distributions of trace metals, dissolved organic carbon, and inorganic nutrients as
well as to assess the extent of anthropogenic inputs into the Narmada and Tapti rivers. Water and sediment qualities are variable
in the rivers, and there are major pollution problems at certain locations, mainly associated with urban and industrial centers.
The metal concentrations of samples of the aquatic compartments investigated were close to the maximum permissible concentration
for the survival of aquatic life, except for higher values of Cu (5–763 μg l−1), Pb (24–376 μg l−1), Zn (24–730 μg l−1), and Cr (70–740 μg l−1) and for drinking water except for elevated concentrations of metals such as Pb, Fe (850–2,060 μg l−1), Cr, and Ni (20–120 μg l−1). In general, the concentrations of trace metals in the rivers vary down stream which may affect the “health” of the aquatic
ecosystem and may also affect the health of the rural community that depends on the untreated river water directly for domestic
use. The assessment of EF, I
geo, and PLI in the sediments reveals overall moderate pollution in the river basins. 相似文献

Extremely high concentrations of uranium (U) were discovered in shallow, groundwater-fed hyperalkaline soda lakes in Eastern
Mongolia. A representative groundwater sample in this area is dilute and alkaline, pH = 7.9, with 10 mM TIC and 5 mM Cl−. In contrast, a representative lake water sample is pH ~ 10 with TIC and Cl− each more than 1,000 mM. Groundwater concentrations of U range from 0.03 to 0.43 μM L−1. Lake water U ranges from 0.24 to >62.5 μM, possibly the highest naturally occurring U concentrations ever reported in surface
water. Strontium isotopes 87Sr/86Sr varied in groundwaters from 0.706192 to 0.709776 and in lakes 87Sr/86Sr varied from 0.708702 to 0.709432. High concentrations of U, Na, Cl−, and K correlate to radiogenic Sr in lake waters suggesting that U is sourced from local Cretaceous alkaline rhyolites. Uranium-rich
groundwaters are concentrated by evaporation and U(VI) is chelated by CO3−2 to form the highly soluble UO2(CO3)3−4. Modeled evaporation of lakes suggests that a U-mineral phase is likely to precipitate during evaporation. 相似文献

Geochemical study of arsenic and other trace elements in groundwater and sediments of the Old Brahmaputra River Plain,Bangladesh 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Faruque Ahmed M. Hawa Bibi Hiroaki Ishiga Takehiko Fukushima Teruyuki Maruoka 《Environmental Earth Sciences》2010,60(6):1303-1316
The geochemical study of groundwaters and core sediments from the Old Brahmaputra plain of Bangladesh was conducted to investigate
the distribution of arsenic and related trace elements. Groundwaters from tube wells are characterized by pH of 6.4–7.4, dissolved
oxygen (DO) of 0.8–1.8 mg/l, Ca contents of 5–50 mg/l, and Fe contents of 0.2–12.9 mg/l. Arsenic concentrations ranged from
8 to 251 μg/l, with an average value of 63 μg/l. A strong positive correlation exists between As and Fe (r
2 = 0.802; p = 0.001) concentrations in groundwater. The stratigraphic sequences in the cores consist of yellowish silty clays at top,
passing downward into grayish to yellowish clays and sands. The uppermost 3 m and lower parts (from 13 to 31 m) of the core
sediments are oxidized (average oxidation reduction potential (ORP) +170 and +220 mV, respectively), and the ORP values gradually
become negative from 3 to 13 m depths (−35 to −180 mV), indicating that anoxic conditions prevail in the shallow aquifers
of the Brahmaputra plain. Age determinations suggest that clay horizons at ~10 m depth were deposited at around 2,000 and
5,000 years BP (14C ages) during the transgressive phase of sea-level change. Elevated concentrations of As, Pb, Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr, and V are present
in the silts and clays, probably due to adsorption onto clay particles. Significant concentrations of As occur in black peat
and peaty sediments at depths between 9 and 13 m. A strong positive correlation between As and Fe was found in the sediments,
indicating As may be adsorbed onto Fe oxides in aquifer sediments. 相似文献

National scale evaluation of groundwater chemistry in Korea coastal aquifers: evidences of seawater intrusion 总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1

Pollution of groundwater by seawater intrusion poses a threat to sustainable agriculture in the coastal areas of Korea. Therefore, seawater intrusion monitoring stations were installed in eastern, western, and southern coastal areas and have been operated since 1998. In this study, groundwater chemistry data obtained from the seawater intrusion monitoring stations during the period from 2007 to 2009 were analyzed and evaluated. Groundwater was classified into fresh (<1,500 μS/cm), brackish (1,500–3,000 μS/cm), and saline (>3,000 μS/cm) according to EC levels. Among groundwater samples (n = 233), 56, 7, and 37% were classified as the fresh, brackish, and saline, respectively. The major dissolved components of the brackish and saline groundwaters were enriched compared with those of the fresh groundwater. The enrichment of Na+ and Cl− was especially noticeable due to seawater intrusion. Thus, the brackish and saline groundwaters were classified as Ca–Cl and Na–Cl types, while the fresh groundwater was classified as Na–HCO3 and Ca–HCO3 types. The groundwater included in the Na–Cl types indicated the effects of seawater mixing. Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, SO4 2−, and Br− showed good correlations with Cl− of over r = 0.624. Of these components, the strong correlations of Mg2+, SO4 2−, and Br− with Cl− (r ≥ 0.823) indicated a distinct mixing between fresh groundwater and seawater. The Ca/Cl and HCO3/Cl ratios of the groundwaters gradually decreased and approached those of seawater. The Mg/Cl, Na/Cl, K/Cl, SO4/Cl, and Br/Cl ratios of the groundwaters gradually decreased, and were similar to or lower than those of seawater, indicating that Mg2+, Na+, K+, SO4 2−, and Br−, as well as Cl− in the saline groundwater can be enriched by seawater mixing, while Ca2+ and HCO3 − are mainly released by weathering processes. The influence of seawater intrusion was evaluated using threshold values of Cl− and Br−, which were estimated as 80.5 and 0.54 mg/L, respectively. According to these criteria, 41–50% of the groundwaters were affected by seawater mixing. 相似文献

This paper analyses flow and transport of pesticides from the unsaturated zone to groundwater so as to predict concentration
of those contaminants in the Fucino Plain’s groundwater, by site investigations and numerical simulations. Pesticides were
detected in surface water (peaks of 13 μg L−1) and groundwater (peaks of 0.37 μg L−1). Modelling tools made it possible to identify that pattern of precipitation, organic matter content, and root thickness
are the key factors involved in vertical seepage of pesticides. Numerical simulations indicated that a significant fraction
of contaminants is leached from the most surficial soil layers through runoff, while only a secondary fraction is mobilised
towards groundwater. Likelihood of contaminating deep groundwater is fairly low, whereas surface waters show higher susceptibility.
Results of the proposed conceptual hydrogeological model show that pesticides are more likely to be entrained by mixing of
stream water with shallow groundwater in periods of high water exploitation from shallow wells. 相似文献

Long-Term and Seasonal Changes in Nutrients,Phytoplankton Biomass, and Dissolved Oxygen in Deep Bay,Hong Kong 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Deep Bay is a semienclosed bay that receives sewage from Shenzhen, a fast-growing city in China. NH4 is the main N component of the sewage (>50% of total N) in the inner bay, and a twofold increase in NH4 and PO4 concentrations is attributed to increased sewage loading over the 21-year period (1986–2006). During this time series, the
maximum annual average NH4 and PO4 concentrations exceeded 500 and 39 μM, respectively. The inner bay (Stns DM1 and DM2) has a long residence time and very
high nutrient loads and yet much lower phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll (Chl) <10 μg L−1 except for Jan, July, and Aug) and few severe long-term hypoxic events (dissolved oxygen (DO) generally >2 mg L−1) than expected. Because it is shallow (~2 m), phytoplankton growth is likely limited by light due to mixing and suspended
sediments, as well as by ammonium toxicity, and biomass accumulation is reduced by grazing, which may reduce the occurrence
of hypoxia. Since nutrients were not limiting in the inner bay, the significant long-term increase in Chl a (0.52–0.57 μg L−1 year−1) was attributed to climatic effects in which the significant increase in rainfall (11 mm year−1) decreased salinity, increased stratification, and improved water stability. The outer bay (DM3 to DM5) has a high flushing
rate (0.2 day−1), is deeper (3 to 5 m), and has summer stratification, yet there are few large algal blooms and hypoxic events since dilution
by the Pearl River discharge in summer, and the invasion of coastal water in winter is likely greater than the phytoplankton
growth rate. A significant long-term increase in NO3 (0.45–0.94 μM year−1) occurred in the outer bay, but no increasing trend was observed for SiO4 or PO4, and these long-term trends in NO3, PO4, and SiO4 in the outer bay agreed with those long-term trends in the Pearl River discharge. Dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) has
approximately doubled from 35–62 to 68–107 μM in the outer bay during the last two decades, and consequently DIN to PO4 molar ratios have also increased over twofold since there was no change in PO4. The rapid increase in salinity and DO and the decrease in nutrients and suspended solids from the inner to the outer bay
suggest that the sewage effluent from the inner bay is rapidly diluted and appears to have a limited effect on the phytoplankton
of the adjacent waters beyond Deep Bay. Therefore, physical processes play a key role in reducing the risk of algal blooms
and hypoxic events in Deep Bay. 相似文献

Mobility and ecological risk assessment of heavy metals in surface sediments of Xiamen Bay and its adjacent areas,China 总被引:4,自引:1,他引:3
Xiamen Bay (XMB) has received substantial loadings of pollutants from industrial and municipal wastewater discharged since
the 1980s. To assess ecological risks and the current spatial changes of metal contaminants in bottom surface sediments, 12
samples were collected. Samples were subjected to a total digestion technique and analyzed by ICP–OES for Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr,
and Cd, and by AFS for Hg and As. Among these metals, Zn had the highest values (68–268 mg kg−1), followed by Pb (27–71 mg kg−1), and lower concentrations were found for Cd (42–1,913 μg kg−1) and Hg (0–442 μg kg−1). In comparison with the average crustal abundance values, the results indicated that nearly half of the sediment samples
of XMB and its adjacent areas were contaminated by Cd, Pb, Zn, and As. Furthermore, based on the modified BCR sequential extraction
procedure, the chemical speciation of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn, Hg, and As) in selected sediment samples were evaluated
in this study. Data from BCR sequential extractions indicated that Cd posed a medium ecological risk, whereas, Cr posed low
risk since its exchangeable and carbonate fractions were below 4%, and the mobility of heavy metals in XMB decreased in the
order Cd > Pb > Cu > Zn > Hg > As > Cr. By applying mean effects range median quotients (mERMQ), the results showed that Yuandang
Lagoon with mERMQ value >0.5 would be expected to have the greatest potential toxic risk in amphipod within XMB and its adjacent
areas. 相似文献

Distribution and enrichment of trace metals in marine sediments of Bay of Bengal, off Ennore,south-east coast of India 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In order to avoid the pollution of trace metals in marine environment, it is necessary to establish the data and understand
the mechanisms influencing the distribution of trace metals in marine environment. The concentration of heavy metals (Fe,
Mn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Co and Cd) were studied in sediments of Ennore shelf, to understand the metal contamination due to
heavily industrialized area of Ennore, south-east coast of India. Concentration of metals shows significant variability and
range from 1.7 to 3.7% for Fe, 284–460 μg g−1 for Mn, 148.6–243.2 μg g−1 for Cr, 385–657 μg g−1 for Cu, 19.8–53.4 μg g−1 for Ni, 5.8–11.8 μg g−1 for Co, 24.9–40 μg g−1 for Pb, 71.3–201 μg g−1 for Zn and 4.6–7.5 μg g−1 for Cd. For various metals the contamination factor (CF) and geoaccumulation index (I
geo) has been calculated to assess the degree of pollution in sediments. The geoaccumulation index shows that Cd, Cr and Cu moderately
to extremely pollute the sediments. This study shows that the major sources of metal contamination in the Ennore shelf are
land-based anthropogenic ones, such as discharge of industrial wastewater, municipal sewage and run-off through the Ennore
estuary. The intermetallic relationship revealed the identical behavior of metals during its transport in the marine environment. 相似文献

The objective of this study is to analyze the geochemical conditions associated with the presence of arsenic (As) and fluoride
(F) in the phreatic aquifer of Coronel Moldes, in the central sector of the Argentine Chacopampean plain. The studied aquifer
is composed of silty sand sediments of aeolian origin, typically loess-like sediments. The geochemical composition of water
varies from sodium bicarbonate to sodium sulfate-chloride water. As contents range from low concentrations, below detection
level, to 250 μg/l. High values of F (up to 12 mg/l) were recorded. A high As–F correlation was found (R
2 = 0.84). The pH varied from 7.31 to 8.85 and the nitrates reached concentrations up to 200 mg/l, indicating an oxidant environment.
The highest values of As and F agreed with sodium bicarbonate waters as well as with the highest values of pH recorded. There
was a high correlation between As and F− as well as between As and the Na/Ca ratio. The composition and texture of loess, low permeability and hydraulic gradients
together with the geochemical features of sodium bicarbonate waters are proper conditions for the mobilization of As and F
in groundwater in the central area of Argentina. 相似文献

We analyzed speleothem calcite from the Oregon Caves National Monument, southwestern Oregon, to determine the preservation,
distribution, concentrations and sources of aliphatic lipid compounds preserved in the calcite. Maximum speleothem growth
rate occurs during interglaciations and minimum during glacial intervals. Concentrations of the total lipid compounds range
from 0.5 to 12.9 μg g−1. They increase at times of low speleothem growth rate, suggesting dilution, whereas the apparent accumulation rate of lipid
compounds tends to be highest during times of fastest speleothem growth rate. Such increased accumulation generally corresponds
to times of warm (interglacial) climate, suggesting either a greater source of organic materials during interglacial times
and/or greater efficiency of compound capture during more rapid calcite growth. Aliphatic lipid compounds include homologous
n-alkanoic acids, n-alkanols and methyl n-alkanoates and sterols with concentrations ranging from 0.3 to 7.8 μg g−1, 0.4 to 1.1 μg g−1, 0.5 to 9.6 μg g−1 and 0.1 to 2.7 μg g−1, respectively. Minor amounts of branched methyl n-alkanoates and dimethyl n-alkanedioates are also present. The high concentrations of methyl n-alkanoates are the result of esterification reactions of free fatty acids in alkaline solutions with high pH values associated
with the dripping cave waters. The distribution patterns and geochemical parameters and indices indicate that the major sources
of the aliphatic lipids involved leaching from higher plants and microbial residues derived from the soil zone above the cave
system. The estimated percentage of microbial inputs ranged from 42 to 90% of the total lipids and also showed an increase
in accumulation during warm climates. These well-preserved lipid compounds in speleothem calcite could be used as biomarkers
for paleoenvironmental study. 相似文献

Nitrate pollution of groundwater in Toyserkan, western Iran 总被引:5,自引:2,他引:3
Mohsen Jalali 《Environmental Earth Sciences》2011,62(5):907-913
A total of 95 groundwater samples were collected from Toyserkan, western Iran to assess the chemical composition and nitrate
(NO3
−) status of groundwater. The most prevalent water type is Ca–HCO3 followed by water types Ca–Mg–HCO3. In comparison with the World Health Organization (WHO) drinking water guideline of 50 mg l−1 for NO3
−, a total of nine wells (9.5%) showed higher concentrations. In 36% of samples (34) NO3
− concentration was low (<20 mg l−1), and in 53.7% of samples (51), in the range of 20–50 mg l−1. The samples were classified into four groups based on NO3
− and chloride (Cl−) concentrations. Of the samples, 40% were classified as group 4 and were relatively high in Cl− and NO3
− (Cl− > 47 mg l−1, NO3
− > 27 mg l−1). The high correlation between NO3
− and Cl− (r = 0.86, p < 0.01) is consistent with a manure source, resulting from the practice of adding salt to animal feed. Pollution of groundwaters
appeared to be affected by the application of inorganic fertilizer at greater than agronomic rates, Cl-salt inputs, and irrigation
practice. 相似文献

This study describes the hydrogeochemistry and distributions of As in groundwater from a newly investigated area of Burkina Faso. Groundwaters have been sampled from hand-pumped boreholes and dug wells close to the town of Ouahigouya in northern Burkina Faso. Although most analysed groundwaters have As concentrations of less than 10 μg L−1, they have a large range from <0.5 to 1630 μg L−1. The highest concentrations are found in borehole waters; all dug wells analysed in this study have As concentrations of <10 μg L−1. Skin disorders (melanosis, keratosis and more rare skin tumour) have been identified among the populations in three villages in northern Burkina Faso, two within the study area. Although detailed epidemiological studies have not been carried out, similarities with documented symptoms in other parts of the world suggest that these are likely to be linked to high concentrations of As in drinking water. The high-As groundwaters observed derive from zones of Au mineralisation in Birimian (Lower Proterozoic) volcano-sedimentary rocks, the Au occurring in vein structures along with quartz and altered sulphide minerals (pyrite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite). However, the spatial variability in As concentrations in the mineralised zones is large and the degree of testing both laterally and with depth so far is limited. Hence, concentrations are difficult to predict on a local scale. From available data, the groundwater appears to be mainly oxic and the dissolved As occurs almost entirely as As(V) although concentrations are highest in groundwaters with dissolved-O2 concentrations <2 mg L−1. The source is likely to be the oxidised sulphide minerals and secondary Fe oxides in the mineralised zones. Positive correlations are observed between dissolved As and both Mo and W which are also believed to be derived from ore minerals and oxides in the mineralised zones. The discovery of high As concentrations in some groundwaters from the Birimian rocks of northern Burkina Faso reiterates the need for reconnaissance surveys in mineralised areas of crystalline basement. 相似文献

Riparian wetlands have multiple source waters that require understanding to effectively manage water quantity and quality.
Source waters were determined in an interception-wetland located a relatively flat clayey till terrain in southern Minnesota.
Data loggers were used to measure precipitation, water stage from monitoring wells and a tile-drain outlet. Over 70 oxygen
(δ18O), hydrogen (δD) and geochemical water samples were collected from seven locations over different seasons (9 events) from
1996 to 1999. Results indicate the dominant source water input to the wetland was drained shallow groundwater beneath intensively
managed cropland (P = 0.000). Evapotranspiration was the dominant export pathway. Nitrate–nitrogen (NO3-N) concentrations significantly decreased (P = 0.000) in the cattail-willow portion of the wetland. Total phosphorous (TP) concentrations were relatively high in the
grass portion of the wetland (673 ± 549 μg L−1), and relatively low in the cattail-willow portion of the wetland (139 ± 85 μg L−1) because source waters were low in TP. Overall, the interception-wetland design limited out-of-bank flooding, yet allowed
sufficient gradient between the cropland and the wetland outlet to minimize potential crop damage and provide hydraulic storage
for nutrient attenuation. 相似文献

To determine the appropriate allocation of resources for the future restoration of the abandoned mining district of Kangwon
in Korea, identification of the main pollutants and the main sources discharging these pollutants is crucial. Therefore, a
2-year study was undertaken to quantify the amount of pollutants in the Uchen stream (a potential sink for contamination),
which runs through the district, and to determine the potential sources of these pollutants, including mine drainage and soil.
Arsenic (As) was the main pollutant in mine drainage and soils showing concentrations above the Korean regulated standard
levels of 50 μg L−1 and 50 mg kg−1 for water and soil, respectively. In addition, the pollution index (PI) showed that mine drainages were polluted by As to
a moderate (2 ≤ PI < 3) or strong (4 ≤ PI < 5) degree. Consequently, As load in mine drainage and soil contributed to increased
amounts of As in the stream. The As loads in mine drainages (11 and 587 g month−1 for mine adit 1 and 2, respectively) accounted for only 9% of the total As load to the stream (6,378 g month−1); and the influence of mine drainages on As contents in the stream was more reliant on the total volume of mine drainage
generated rather than the As concentration in the mine drainage. Approximately 91% of the As in the stream was derived from
the soils within the study area. 相似文献

Groundwater nitrate contamination and risk assessment in an agricultural area,South Korea 总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1

The nitrate of groundwater in the Gimpo agricultural area, South Korea, was characterized by means of nitrate concentration,
nitrogen-isotope analysis, and the risk assessment of nitrogen. The groundwaters belonging to Ca–(Cl + NO3) and Na–(Cl + NO3) types displayed a higher average NO3
− concentration (79.4 mg/L), exceeding the Korean drinking water standard (<44.3 mg/L NO3
−). The relationship between δ18O–NO3
− values and δ15N–NO3
− values revealed that nearly all groundwater samples with δ15N–NO3
− of +7.57 to +13.5‰ were affected by nitrate from manure/sewage as well as microbial nitrification and negligible denitrification.
The risk assessment of nitrate for groundwater in the study area was carried out using the risk-based corrective action model
since it was recognized that there is a necessity of a quantitative assessment of health hazard, as well as a simple estimation
of nitrate concentration. All the groundwaters of higher nitrate concentration than the Korean drinking water standard (<44.3 mg/L NO3
−) belonged to the domain of the hazard index <1, indicating no health hazard by nitrate in groundwater in the study area.
Further, the human exposure to the nitrate-contaminated soil was below the critical limit of non-carcinogenic risk. 相似文献

A baseline study involving analyses of subsurface water samples from the Cape Coast granitoid complex, Lower Birimian, Togo
Formation and the Voltaian Group, was carried out to assess their suitability for drinking, domestic and agricultural purposes.
Study results show that pH within the range (3.0 ≤ pH ≤ 6.5) constitutes 74% of the boreholes analysed, and 51% have hardness
values ranging from 7.89 to 73.24 mg/l as CaCO3 and are described as soft. Total dissolved solids are less than 1,000 mg/l and generally characterized by low conductivity
values, of which 95% are within the range (55 ≤ EC ≤ 1,500 μS/cm). The mean values of the major cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+) and anions (SO42−, Cl−, HCO3−) are all within the World Health Organisation (WHO) standards. Five (5) of the boreholes sampled have nitrate (NO3−) contamination. Even though NO3− contamination and acidic waters exist in some of the boreholes, the majority of the boreholes are excellent for drinking
and domestic purposes. Assessment of the groundwaters for agricultural irrigation revealed three main categories. These are
low salinity–low sodicity (C1–S1), medium salinity–low sodicity (C2–S1) and high salinity–low sodicity (C3–S1), using the
US Salinity Laboratory (USSL) classification scheme. As much as 95% of the samples plotted in the ‘excellent to good’ and
‘good to permissible’ categories on the Wilcox diagram. The groundwater in the study area may therefore be regarded as good
for irrigation activities. The major identifiable geochemical processes responsible for the evolution of the various ions
are mineral weathering and chemical reactions. 相似文献

High arsenic (As) concentrations, >900 μg/L, were measured in Ca–Mg–SO4 waters from springs and drainages in the village of Pesariis in the Carnic Alps (NE Italy). Oxidation of the outcropping
arsenian marcasite ore deposits of the area is proposed as the mechanism for As release into oxygenated waters during runoff.
Nevertheless, the limited extension of the ore deposit and the relatively low As content of the mineralization suggest that
sulfide weathering might not be the only process responsible for the highest As concentration in groundwaters. An additional
mechanism involves As adsorption onto ferric iron particulate during oxidation, the drawdown in reducing environment at depth
during water infiltration, and the release of ferrous iron and sorbed arsenic to the water columns by reductive dissolution
of hydrous ferric oxides (HFO). This yields the observed Fe–As correlation. Newly formed HFO precipitates when groundwaters
discharge to aerated conditions, leading to the removal of As, which strongly partitions into the iron-rich sediments, adsorbed
onto the surface of amorphous Fe2O3·xH2O. The calculated and measured As concentration in sediments exceeds 10% by weight. Furthermore, geochemical and isotopic
data indicate that the As-rich reservoir partly mixes with shallower aquifers, commonly tapped for drinking supply, representing
a natural hazard for inhabitants. 相似文献
