The sampling distribution of the Wstatistic of disjunction has been estimated by Monte Carlo simulation for the case where the underlying distribution is a random rectangular (Poisson) variable that is divided into two groups at an arbitrary position. A transformation to sinh –1 log e Wgave a variable that was acceptably normal, and from this a simple approximation for the distribution is given, together with a diagram of confidence limits of Wfor this case.  相似文献

The behaviour of synthetic Mg-ferrite (MgFe2O4) has been investigated at high pressure (in situ high-pressure synchrotron radiation powder diffraction at ESRF) and at high temperature (in situ high-temperature X-ray powder diffraction) conditions. The elastic properties determined by the third-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state result in K0=181.5(± 1.3) GPa, K=6.32(± 0.14) and K= –0.0638 GPa–1. The symmetry-independent coordinate of oxygen does not show significant sensitivity to pressure, and the structure shrinking is mainly attributable to the shortening of the cell edge (homogeneous strain). The lattice parameter thermal expansion is described by a0+a1*(T–298)+a2/(T–298)2, where a0=9.1(1) 10–6 K–1, a1=4.9(2) 10–9 K–2 and a2= 5.1(5) 10–2 K. The high-temperature cation-ordering reaction which MgFe-spinel undergoes has been interpreted by the ONeill model, whose parameters are = 22.2(± 1.8) kJ mol–1 and =–17.6(± 1.2) kJ mol–1. The elastic and thermal properties measured have then been used to model the phase diagram of MgFe2O4, which shows that the high-pressure transition from spinel to orthorombic CaMn2O4-like structure at T < 1700 K is preceded by a decomposition into MgO and Fe2O3.  相似文献

Late Quaternary terrestrial climate records from the semi-arid zone of the Western Cape of South Africa are rare. However, palaeoenvironmental information may be inferred from ancient termite mounds of the region. Calcrete lenses in these mounds have δ13C and δ18O values that show systematic changes with radiocarbon dates, which range from 33,629–36,709 to 21,676–23,256 cal yr BP. These dates confirm that these heuweltjies had been present in the landscape since the last glacial period. The decrease in δ13C and δ18O from 33,629–36,709 to 21,676–23,256 cal yr BP indicates that climate information is recorded by the calcretes. It is suggested that a progressive decline in air temperature and an increase in moisture availability, and a decline in abundance of C4 or CAM plants, occurred in the region during the time heuweltjie calcite precipitated.  相似文献

A new thermodynamic model for multi-component spinel solid solutions has been developed which takes into account thermodynamic consequences of cation mixing in spinel sublattices. It has been applied to the evaluation of thermodynamic functions of cation mixing and thermodynamic properties of Fe3O4–FeCr2O4 spinels using intracrystalline cation distribution in magnetite, lattice parameters and activity-composition relations of magnetite–chromite solid solutions. According to the model, cation distribution in binary spinels, (Fe1-x2+ Fex3+)[Fex2+Fe2-2y-x3+Cr2y]O4, and their thermodynamic properties depend strongly on Fe2+–Cr3+ cation mixing. Mixing of Fe2+–Fe3+ and Fe3+–Cr3+ can be accepted as ideal. If Fe2+, Fe3+ and Cr are denoted as 1, 3 and 4 respectively, the equation of cation distribution is –RT ln(x2/((1–x)(2–2yx)))= G13* + (1–2x)W13+y(W14W13–W34) where G13* is the difference between the Gibbs energy of inverse and normal magnetite, Wij is a Margules parameter of cation mixing and G13*, J/mol =–23,000+13.4 T, W14=36 kJ/mol, W13=W34=0. The positive nonconfigurational Gibbs energy of mixing is the main reason for changing activity–composition relations with temperature. According to the model, the solvus in Fe3O4–FeCr2O4 spinel has a critical temperature close to 500°C, which is consistent with mineralogical data.  相似文献

This paper describes, given a tally matrix with strictly positive entries, a method to determine whether the associated Markov process is reversible, and (for reversible Markov processes) methods to compute the reversibility matrix from the tally matrix. If the tally matrixN is symmetric, then it is shown that the Markov process must be reversible and the reversibility matrixC equalss (R –1NR–1), whereR is the diagonal matrix whosei th diagonal entry is the sum of the entries of thei th row ofN (for everyi) ands denotes the sum of all the entries ofN. Because a symmetric tally matrix is of special importance in applications, a 2 test is proposed for determining, in the presence of experimental errors, whether such a matrix is symmetric.  相似文献

The chronology of near-surface sediments in Lake Illawarra has been investigated using radiocarbon dating and anthropogenically derived substances including trace metals, ash, and137Cs. Sediments at depths about 1 m below the water-sediment interface ranged in age from Modern to 786 calendar years bp on the basis of radiocarbon dating ofNotospisula trigonella valves. Multiple marker (for example ash-trace metals) depth-concentration sediment profiles yielded estimates of sedimentation rate ranging from 3 to 5 mm yr–1 at Griffins Bay to more than 16 mm yr–1 at Macquarie Rivulet. Sedimentation rates of approximately 10 mm yr–1 appeared to be typical of the western and southwestern portions of the lagoon. Rates of sediment accretion, prior to catchment clearing, urbanization, and industrialization have been estimated at less than 1 mm yr–1, thus indicating a general tenfold increase in sediment accumulation adjacent to the western foreshore caused by catchment development. Accelerated sedimentation in shallow coastal lagoons constitutes significant environmental impacts including shoaling, degradation of seagrass beds, and increased turbidity with consequent loss of aesthetic appeal. Management policy should be directed at attempts to reduce the amount of sediment input by the construction of strategically placed sediment retention ponds. Siltation within the shallow embayments of Lake Illawarra could be ameliorated by a carefully planned program of dredging.  相似文献

We have proposed that points of future initiation of rupture may be mapped, based on minima in local recurrence times, which are equivalent to local maxima in the probability for main shocks to occur. These minima are often controlled by anomalously low b-values (logN = a − bM). Of the Kanto-Tokai area, approximately 12% showed anomalously short recurrence times and was proposed as asperities, based on seismicity up to 1999. During the period 1999–2003.5, about 75% of the earthquakes with M ≥ 3.5 fell into the asperities, earlier defined (for example 19 out of 23 M ≥ 3.8 events). The probability for this to occur by chance is approximately 2 10− 14. This supports our idea that the most likely volumes to produce main shocks may be mapped by minima in local recurrence times.  相似文献

The extended method of Q-mode factor analysis developed by Miesch for data matrices with constant row sums is generalized to data matrices with variable row sums. A new, simple and highly sensitive kinetic method for the determination of trace iron (III) has been developed based on the catalytic effect of iron (III) on color reaction ofp-amino-N, N-dimethylaniline dihydrochloride (p-DMA) oxidated by hydrogen peroxide. The reaction is followed spectrophotometrically by measuring the absorbance at 510 nm. The detection limit is 4.47×10−11 g/ml, and the calibration curve is linear in the range of 0–0.10μg Fe(III) /25 ml with a relative standard deviation of ±3.25%. The method has been applied to the determination of iron in tap-water, chemical reagents and human hair.  相似文献

In this study, biometric and structural engineering tool have been used to examine a possible relationship within ChuariaTawuia complex and micro-FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) analyses to understand the biological affinity of Chuaria circularis Walcott, collected from the Mesoproterozoic Suket Shales of the Vindhyan Supergroup and the Neoproterozoic Halkal Shales of the Bhima Group of peninsular India. Biometric analyses of well preserved carbonized specimens show wide variation in morphology and uni-modal distribution. We believe and demonstrate to a reasonable extent that C. circularis most likely was a part of Tawuia-like cylindrical body of algal origin. Specimens with notch/cleft and overlapping preservation, mostly recorded in the size range of 3–5 mm, are of special interest. Five different models proposed earlier on the life cycle of C. circularis are discussed. A new model, termed as ‘Hybrid model’ based on present multidisciplinary study assessing cylindrical and spherical shapes suggesting variable cell wall strength and algal affinity is proposed. This model discusses and demonstrates varied geometrical morphologies assumed by Chuaria and Tawuia, and also shows the inter-relationship of ChuariaTawuia complex.Structural engineering tool (thin walled pressure vessel theory) was applied to investigate the implications of possible geometrical shapes (sphere and cylinder), membrane (cell wall) stresses and ambient pressure environment on morphologically similar C. circularis and Tawuia. The results suggest that membrane stresses developed on the structures similar to ChuariaTawuia complex were directly proportional to radius and inversely proportional to the thickness in both cases. In case of hollow cylindrical structure, the membrane stresses in circumferential direction (hoop stress) are twice of the longitudinal direction indicating that rupture or fragmentation in the body of Tawuia would have occurred due to hoop stress. It appears that notches and discontinuities seen in some of the specimens of Chuaria may be related to rupture suggesting their possible location in 3D Chuaria.The micro-FTIR spectra of C. circularis are characterized by both aliphatic and aromatic absorption bands. The aliphaticity is indicated by prominent alkyl group bands between 2800–3000 and 1300–1500 cm−1. The prominent absorption signals at 700–900 cm−1 (peaking at 875 and 860 cm−1) are due to aromatic CH out of plane deformation. A narrow, strong band is centred at 1540 cm−1 which could be COOH band. The presence of strong aliphatic bands in FTIR spectra suggests that the biogeopolymer of C. circularis is of aliphatic nature. The wall chemistry indicates the presence of ‘algaenan’—a biopolymer of algae.  相似文献

Corals from the Seychelles Islands, Indian Ocean, occur mainly as small coralline algae–vermetid remnants found in cavities adhering to the rock surface, and they rarely attain more than 2 m2in area. Samples ofGoniastreaandPoritesfrom elevations between 1.7 and 6 m above present mean sea level were dated by TIMS238U–234U–230Th techniques. The ages from well-preserved corals lie between 131,000 and 122,000 yr B.P., in agreement with most other observations of the last-interglacial sea level. Field evidence and dating from high marine limestones from two sections at La Digue Island indicate a period of coral buildup until 131,000 yr B.P., followed by a drop in sea level between 131,000 and 122,000 yr B.P.  相似文献

Reversed univariant hydrothermal phase-equilibrium reactions, in which a redox reaction occurs and is controlled by oxygen buffers, can be used to extract thermochemical data on minerals. The dominant gaseous species present, even for relatively oxidizing buffers such as the QFM buffer, are H2O and H2; the main problem is to calculate the chemical potentials of these components in a binary mixture. The mixing of these two species in the gas phase was assumed by Eugster and Wones (1962) to be ideal; this assumption allows calculation of the chemical potentials of the two components in a binary gas mixture, using data in the literature. A simple-mixture model of nonideal mixing, such as that proposed by Shaw (1967), can also be combined with the equations of state for oxygen buffers to permit derivation of the chemical potentials of the two components. The two mixing models yield closely comparable results for the more oxidizing buffers such as the QFM buffer. For reducing buffers such as IQF, the nonideal-mixing correction can be significant and the Shaw model is better.The procedure of calculation of mineralogical thermochemical data, in reactions where hydrogen and H2O simultaneously appear, is applied to the experimental data on annite, given by Wones et al. (1971), and on almandine, given by Hsu (1968). For annite the results are: Standard entropy of formation from the elements, S f 0 (298, 1)=–283.35±2.2 gb/gf, S 0 (298, 1) =+92.5 gb/gf. G f 0 (298, 1)=–1148.2±6 kcal, and H f 0 (298, 1)=–1232.7±7 kcal. For almandine, the calculation takes into account the mutual solution of FeAl2O4 (Hc) in magnetite and of Fe3O4 (Mt) in hercynite and the temperature dependence of this solid solution, as given by Turnock and Eugster (1962); the calculations assume a regular-solution model for this binary spinel system. The standard entropy of formation of almandine, S f,A 0 (298, 1) is –272.33±3 gb/gf. The third law entropy, S 0 (298, 1) is +68.3±3 gb/gf, a value much less than the oxide-sum estimate but the deviation is nearly the same as that of grossularite, referring to a comparable set of oxide standard states. The Gibbs free energy G f,A 0 (298, 1) is –1192.36±4 kcal, and the enthalpy H f,A 0 (298, 1) is –1273.56±5 kcal.Publication authorized by the Director, U. S. Geological Survey.  相似文献

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and eletron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) low temperature measurements of natural anhydrite CaSO4, celestite SrSO4 and barite BaSO4 have revealed the presence of PO 4 2– radical. The principal values of the g tensor and the A tensor [MHz] of hyperfine interaction (HFI) are found to be g xx =2.0124, g yy =2.0159, g zz =2.0098, A xx =82.1, A yy =81.4, A zz =77.2 in CaSO4, g xx =2.0250, g yy =2.0070, g zz =2.0131, A xx =84.8, A yy =82.7, A zz = 90.5 in SrSO4, g xx =2.0302, g yy =2.0079, g zz =2.0135, A xx =85.2, A yy =82.3, A zz =90.0 in BaSO4. The principal axes A xx , A yy and A zz are parallel to the crystallographic axes a, b, c in all three matrices. In anhydrite the principal g axes coincide with the A axes. In celestite and barite such coincidence is found to be only along the b axis (a low symmetry effect). The coherence effect of splitting of ENDOR lines by a strong microwave field has been detected. From the analysis of the relative intensities of the ENDOR lines of the PO 4 2– radical in CaSO4 the relation of probabilities of cross-relaxation processes W x/W xx =3.5 are evaluated.  相似文献

Heats of mixing of synthetic C2/m fluortremolite-fluoredenite amphiboles measured at 985 K show a systematic deviation from ideal mixing consistent with a subregular solution model. The deviations from ideal mixing are interpreted in terms of Na ordering in the A-site and Na-Al interactions in edenite-poor compositions. Enthalpies of edenite substitution reactions in amphiboles and in SiO2-NaAlO2 glasses and framework silicates are comparable. Gibbs free energies of formation of fluortremolite and fluoredenite at 298K are -2,821.07±3.34 kcal mol–1 and -2,889.59±2.40 kcal mol–1 respectively. The former value is in good agreement with values calculated from both F-OH exchange experiments and from a natural fluortremolite-bearing metamorphic rock. Least-squares fitted sub-regular heat-of-mixing parameters are poorly constrained and unrealistically high, but estimated subregular mixing parameters consistent with 95% confidence interval uncertainties in the calorimetric data and with TEM constraints give activity-composition relations in good agreement with the A-site compositions of natural metamorphic and igneous hornblendes. These relations predict unmixing in edenite-rich compositions over a wide range of temperature, but lend no support to the existence of a hornblende-actinolite miscibility gap. Calibration of the reaction tremolite+ albite=edenite+4 quartz as a function ofP,T andX ed amph indicates negativedP/dT slopes and a limited range of X ed amph (0.3 to 0.5) in equilibrium with plagioclase and quartz over a wide range of pressure and temperature, consistent with metamorphic hornblende-plagioclase assemblages. The energetics of this reaction suggest, however, that amphibole-plagioclase disequilibrium may be common.  相似文献

As a part of the MONTBLEX-90 observational programme, Kytoon and Doppler sodar observations were taken at Kharagpur. These data are analysed to study the turbulent characteristics of the atmospheric boundary layer in terms of stability, temperature structure function (C T 2 ) and velocity structure function (C v 2 ).C T 2 follows aZ −4/3 law on most of the days, whereas the variation ofC V 2 is not systematic.C V 2 andC T 2 values are found to vary between 10−5−10−1 m4/3s−2 and 10−5−10−2°C2 m−2/3 respectively.  相似文献

Summary Pressure/temperature estimates based on different combinations of calibrated mineralogical thermometers and barometers and alternative assumptions concerning the Fe2+/(Fe2++Fe3+) ratios in the mineral phases are compared for a suite of fourteen nodules. PreferredP/T values have been obtained by simultaneous solution of eq. (12) ofWood (1974) for garnet-orthopyroxene equilibria and theEllis andGreen (1979) equation defining theP,T,X dependence of the Fe2+–Mg2+ partition coefficient for coexisting garnet and clinopyroxene. However, to obtain realistic results it is first necessary to calculate the Fe3+ contents in the minerals—conveniently done on a charge balance basis. The favoured meanP/T estimates of 654±36°C and 10.8±3.1 kbs are compatible with a lower crustal origin for this nodule suite.

Zusammenfassung Druck-Temperatur-Berechnungen auf Grund verschiedener Kombinationen von kalibrierten mineralogischen Thermometern und Barometern sowie alternativer Modelle der Fe2+/(Fe2++Fe3+)-Verhältnisse in den Mineralen einer Gruppe von 14 Einschlüssen werden verglichen. BevorzugteP/T-Werte ergaben sich durch simultane Lösung der Gl. (12) für Granat-Orthopyroxen-Gleichgewichte vonWood (1974) und der Gleichung vonEllis undGreen (1979), die dieP-T-X-Abhängigkeit des Fe2+–Mg2+-Verteilungskoeffizienten für koexistierende Granat und Clinopyroxen definiert. Um realistische Ergebnisse zu erhalten, ist es jedoch zuerst notwendig, die Fe3+-Gehalte der Minerale zu berechnen, vorzugsweise auf der Grundlage des Ladungsausgleichs. Die bevorzugten Durchschnittswerte von 654°±36°C und 10.8–3.1 kb sind in guter Übereinstimmung mit einer Herkunft aus der unteren Kruste.

A metamorphic petrological study, in conjunction with recent precise geochronometric data, revealed a complex PTt path for high-grade gneisses in a hitherto poorly understood sector of the Mesoproterozoic Maud Belt in East Antarctica. The Maud Belt is an extensive high-grade, polydeformed, metamorphic belt, which records two significant tectono-thermal episodes, once towards the end of the Mesoproterozoic and again towards the late Neoproterozoic/Cambrian. In contrast to previous models, most of the metamorphic mineral assemblages are related to a Pan-African tectono-thermal overprint, with only very few relics of late Mesoproterozoic granulite-facies mineral assemblages (M1) left in strain-protected domains. Petrological and mineral chemical evidence indicates a clockwise PTt path for the Pan-African orogeny. Peak metamorphic (M2b) conditions recorded by most rocks in the area (T = 709–785 °C and P = 7.0–9.5 kbar) during the Pan-African orogeny were attained subsequent to decompression from probably eclogite-facies metamorphic conditions (M2a).The new data acquired in this study, together with recent geochronological and geochemical data, permit the development of a geodynamic model for the Maud Belt that involves volcanic arc formation during the late Mesoproterozoic followed by extension at 1100 Ma and subsequent high-grade tectono-thermal reworking once during continent–continent collision at the end of the Mesoproterozoic (M1; 1090–1030 Ma) and again during the Pan-African orogeny (M2a, M2b) between 565 and 530 Ma. Post-peak metamorphic K-metasomatism under amphibolite-facies conditions (M2c) followed and is ascribed to post-orogenic bimodal magmatism between 500 and 480 Ma.  相似文献

The 19 November 1923 earthquake in the Aran Valley (Central Pyrenees), with observed maximum intensityI max = VIII (MSK), has been studied through the compiling and reviewing of macroseismic information and collecting and processing early seismograms. Analysis of macroseismic data gives a focal depth ofh = 5 km and an anelastic attenuation coefficient 10–3 km–1. Analysis of early instrumental records allows the computation of estimate of magnitude (M L = 5.6) and seismic moment (M o = 1.1 × 1017 N × m) which are consistent with the values ofI o andh obtained from macroseismic data.  相似文献

40Ar/39Ar dating and estimates of regional metamorphic PT conditions were carried out on the basement rocks of the Eastern Kunlun Mountains, Western China. Samples from the Jinshuikou, Xiaomiao, Kuhai, Wanbaogou, and Nachitai groups revealed distinct metamorphic events and four age groups. The age group in the range from 363 to 439 Ma is interpreted to represent cooling after Middle Silurian–Late Devonian granulite(?) and amphibolite facies metamorphism, which is dominated by low–middle pressure/high temperature conditions. This tectono-thermal event is related to the closure of an oceanic basin or marginal sea. An age group of 212–242 Ma represents cooling after Triassic metamorphic overprint, which is probably associated with magmatic intrusions. This thermal event, together with the Permo-Triassic ophiolite zone along the South Kunlun Fault, relates to the closure of a major ocean (between India and Eurasia) and the eventual N-ward accretion of the Qiangtang block in Permo-Triassic times. The significance of the age group of 104–172 Ma may be related to the ductile deformation along the Xidatan fault due to the northward-directed accretion of the Lhasa block. Biotites from Nachitai record a partial isotopic resetting at ca. 32 Ma that is interpreted to represent a late-stage exhumation caused by further crustal shortening.  相似文献

In-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments were conducted using the SPEED-1500 multi-anvil press of SPring-8 on stishovite SiO2 and pressure-volume-temperature data were collected at up to 22.5 GPa and 1,073 K, which corresponds to the pressure conditions of the base of the mantle transition zone. The analysis of room-temperature data yielded V0=46.56(1) Å3, KT 0=296(5) GPa and K T =4.2(4), and these properties were consistent with the subsequent thermal equation of state (EOS) analyses. A fit of the present data to high-temperature Birch-Murnaghan EOS yielded (KT /T) P =–0.046(5) GPa K–1 and = a + bT with values of a =1.26(11)×10–5 K–1 and b =1.29(17)×10–8 K–2. A fit to the thermal pressure EOS gives 0=1.62(9)×10–5 K–1, ( K T / T) V =–0.027(4) GPa K–1 and (2P /T 2) V =27(5)×10–7 GPa K–2. The lattice dynamical approach by Mie-Grüneisen-Debye EOS yielded 0=1.33(6), q =6.1(8) and 0=1160(120) K. The strong volume dependence of the thermal pressure of stishovite was revealed by the analysis of present data, which was not detectable by the previous high-temperature data at lower pressures, and this yields ( K T / T) V 0 and q 1. The analyses for the fictive volume for a and c axes show that relative stiffness of c axis to a axis is similar both on compression and thermal expansion. Present EOS enables the accurate estimate of density of SiO2 in the deep mantle conditions.  相似文献
