The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of a large eddy simulation (LES) numerical model to assess the influence of mitigation walls with various cross sections on the tsunami-induced loading exerted on a freestanding structure. The validation of the model was performed using laboratory experiment results previously conducted by the second author. The employed experiments simulated a tsunami-like bore at two different impoundment depths, including 55 and 85 cm. The results showed that the one-equation subgrid-scale energy transport LES approach performs better than RANS models such as k-ε, k-ω and LRR and can accurately reproduce experimental data obtained for a wide range of experimental conditions.  相似文献

Foundation scour can have a detrimental effect on the performance of bridge piers, inducing a significant reduction of the lateral capacity of the footing and accumulation of permanent settlement and rotation. Although the hydraulic processes responsible for foundation scour are nowadays well known, predicting their mechanical consequences is still challenging. Indeed, its impact on the failure mechanisms developing around the foundation has not been fully investigated. In this paper, numerical simulations are performed to study the vertical and lateral response of a scoured bridge pier founded on a cylindrical caisson foundation embedded in a layer of dense sand. The sand stress–strain behaviour is reproduced by employing the Severn-Trent model. The constitutive model is firstly calibrated on a set of soil element tests, including drained and undrained monotonic triaxial tests and resonant column tests. The calibration procedure is implemented considering the stress and strain nonuniformities within the samples, by simulating the laboratory tests as boundary value problems. The numerical model is then validated against the results of centrifuge tests. The results of the simulations are in good agreement with the experimental results in terms of foundation capacity and settlement accumulation. Moreover, the model can predict the effects of local and general scour. The numerical analyses also highlight the impact of scouring on the failure mechanisms, revealing that the soil resistance depends on the hydraulic scenario.

The main focus of the present study is to numerically examine the effects of tsunami-like-induced hydrodynamic loading applied to free-standing structures with various architectural geometries. To accomplish these goals, the authors employed a multi-phase numerical model utilizing the volume of fluid method in the three-dimensional space. The second objective of the present study is to improve the understanding of hydrodynamic loads on structural components in order to develop practical guidelines for the engineering design of structures located in areas with a high risk of tsunami hazards. In order to evaluate the performance of the numerical model, the results of the simulation are compared with various available experimental data and physical modeling studies. The tsunami-like wave was reproduced via a sudden release of water located in an impounding reservoir located at the upstream part of a flume in the form of a dambreak wave. The shear force exerted by the hydrodynamic force on the square and round structures in the downstream area is estimated to obtain the value of tsunami loading. Finally, the validated numerical model is employed to examine the influence of the structure’s geometry on the hydrodynamic loads exerted on it.  相似文献

Rigid columns penetrating a firm underlying stratum have often been used to enhance the stability and improve the settlement of embankments over soft ground. Furthermore, an inclined underlying stratum is commonly encountered in engineering practice. This investigation experimentally and numerically studies the performance of embankments over soft ground reinforced by rigid columns with various embedment depths. In centrifuge tests, a tilting failure occurs for columns with an embedment depth Le of 2D (D is the diameter of columns), whereas the embankments remain stable for Le of 7D. This result indicates that the inclined underlying stratum weakens the restraint effect at the column base and that a greater embedment depth is required to ensure the stability of embankments. Parametric studies numerically reveal that there exists a critical embedment depth, which represents a shift in the failure mechanism. The optimum column layout is determined based on the contributions of columns in different locations beneath an embankment. Finally, the influence of the embedment depth on the distribution of the bending moment of the columns and the soil reaction are discussed.

The principle of lithostatic pressure is habitually used in metamorphic geology to calculate burial/exhumation depth from pressure given by geobarometry. However, pressure deviation from lithostatic, i.e. tectonic overpressure/underpressure due to deviatoric stress and deformation, is an intrinsic property of flow and fracture in all materials, including rocks under geological conditions. In order to investigate the influences of tectonic overpressure on metamorphic P–T paths, 2D numerical simulations of continental subduction/collision zones were conducted with variable brittle and ductile rheologies of the crust and mantle. The experiments suggest that several regions of significant tectonic overpressure and underpressure may develop inside the slab, in the subduction channel and within the overriding plate during continental collision. The main overpressure region that may influence the P–T paths of HP–UHP rocks is located in the bottom corner of the wedge‐like confined channel with the characteristic magnitude of pressure deviation on the order of 0.3 GPa and 10–20% from the lithostatic values. The degree of confinement of the subduction channel is the key factor controlling this magnitude. Our models also suggest that subducted crustal rocks, which may not necessarily be exhumed, can be classified into three different groups: (i) UHP‐rocks subjected to significant (≥0.3 GPa) overpressure at intermediate subduction depth (50–70 km, P = 1.5–2.5 GPa) then underpressured at depth ≥100 km (P 3 GPa); (ii) HP‐rocks subjected to ≥0.3 GPa overpressure at peak P–T conditions reached at 50–70 km depth in the bottom corner of the wedge‐like confined subduction channel (P = 1.5–2.5 GPa); (iii) lower‐pressure rocks formed at shallower depths (≤40 km depth, P 1 GPa), which are not subjected to significant overpressure and/or underpressure.  相似文献

The results of field observations of an internal undular bore that were performed in a coastal zone of constant depth in the Sea of Japan are presented. A hydrodynamic model of undular bores is discussed according to which the recorded disturbances of the water medium are an experimental prototype of strongly nonlinear (intense) internal undular bores on the pycnocline of shelf waters of Peter the Great Bay with an intensity close to the limit.

The paper highlights the importance of using site-specific shear modulus reduction (G/Gmax versus shear strain, γ) curves and damping ratio (D versus shear strain, γ) curves for ground response analysis. In order to develop comprehensive G/Gmax–γ and Dγ curves (i.e. over a wide range of strain level), two types of apparatus, viz. resonant column and cyclic simple shear, have been used. The case study considered the geological deposits from the river beds of Yamuna River originating from the Himalayan seismic zone of North India. The tests results have been analysed to develop G/Gmaxγ and Dγ curves and compared with standard curves. It has been observed that upper and lower boundaries for the standard curves are remarkably different for the geological deposit under consideration. In order to assess the impact of using standard curves rather than site-specific curves, ground response analysis has been carried out at five sites along the Yamuna River using two types of curves (standard and site-specific developed in this study). The study showed that the amplification of shear waves at these sites based on the experimentally derived curves is much higher as compared to the standard curves. The proposed curves better represent dynamic behaviour of the soil deposits of the region and will provide a realistic response as far as practically possible, for the structures constructed in the states of Haryana and Delhi and nearby areas. It is anticipated that the data presented in this paper will have wide application and usage.

Pile installation leads to significant changes in the main state variables of the surrounding soil. In addition, the installation process may have an influence on adjacent or intersecting structures such as pile grillages. In this paper, three‐dimensional numerical analyses are presented to investigate the effects of pile driving with open or closed cross‐sections on the surrounding soil and on adjacent structures. Two different installation methods are used: quasi‐static pile jacking and vibratory pile driving. The numerical models are evaluated and verified using data from field tests performed in situ during the construction of the quay wall at the container terminal CT4 in Bremerhaven. Two case studies are presented to characterize the main influence factors for additional loading on adjacent structures due to pile installation. Finally, a parametric study is conducted showing the influence of the installation method, pile cross‐section and distance of a pile from an existing structure on the additional loading for this structure. Heterogeneity in either chemically or microbiologically induced carbonate-based ground improvement methods is a major obstacle in engineering application. Spectral induced polarization (SIP), an innovative and nondestructive method, which has demonstrated promise in monitoring microbial activity, was used in this study to monitor enzyme induced carbonate precipitation (EICP). The complex conductivities, together with the shear wave velocities (Vs), of an EICP modified sand were monitored using a self-developed spectral induced polarization–bender element column. The mean precipitate size was calculated by relaxation time (τ) and the Schwarz equation. The precipitate contents were calculated by cumulative gamma distribution function on the global polarization magnitude (mn) with R2?=?0.989. The stiffness of the enhanced geomaterial, in terms of Vs, correlates to mn with a cumulative lognormal distribution function with R2?=?0.967. Contact cementation was postulated as the dominant association pattern. The possible mechanism for this may be the formation of eddies and the nucleation of CaCO3 crystals during precipitation. The results suggest that SIP can be used as an effective nondestructive monitoring tool to assess the stiffness of geomaterials.

This paper presents and analyzes paleo-liquefaction features found in the State of Kuwait. The features are cemented sand and gravel-filled dikes of Pleisto–Holocene age with appearance and composition similar to typical “sandstone pipes.” The significant age difference between the cemented dikes and the surrounding loose sand, the size and spatial distribution of the dikes, and the local geologic and hydrologic setting all suggest that the feature probably results from a single large event of seismic origin. Likely hypotheses include shaking during large earthquakes or seiching of tsunami-like waves. Additional research is needed to identify the exact cause of these dike formations, which is important for the purpose of improving seismic risk and vulnerability assessment of the Arabian Gulf countries. The search may also help explain the disappearance of an ancient civilization that lived in the same region approximately seven thousand years ago.

This paper presents the observed and simulated effectiveness of deep cement mixing walls created using top-down (DCM-TD) construction techniques for a deep excavation in soft Bangkok clay. The wall system consisted of four rows of 0.7-m-diameter DCM columns, and the bracing system consisted of two 0.25-m-thick basement slabs and seven temporary struts. The effectiveness of the wall system compared to that of other wall systems was evaluated using the measured results of previous case studies. A 3D numerical analysis was performed to calculate forces in the basement slabs and bending moments in the DCM wall. Finally, series of parametric analyses of both DCM-TD and deep cement mixing walls created using bottom-up (DCM-BU) construction techniques were carried out, and their results were compared to highlight the effectiveness of DCM-TD and its applicability to excavations at greater depths. The field and numerical results show that DCM-TD is more effective than DCM-BU in terms of the limitations of lateral wall movement, the bending moment in a DCM wall and the thickness of a DCM wall for various depths because of a larger system stiffness. Therefore, DCM-TD is very effective and suitable for use in potential future deep excavations in urban areas.

The propagation of hydraulic fracture in elastic rocks has widely been investigated. In the paper, we shall focus on numerical modeling of hydraulic fracturing in a class of porous rocks exhibiting plastic deformation. The plastic strain of porous rocks is described by a non-associated plastic model based on Drucker–Prager criterion. The plastic deformation is coupled with fluid pressure evolution described by the lubrication theory. An extended finite element method is used for modeling the propagation of fracture. The fracture propagation criterion is based on the J-integral. The proposed numerical model is validated by comparisons with numerical and analytical results. The influence of plastic deformation on fracture propagation process is investigated.

A parametric study of an embankment on soft soils reinforced with stone columns is performed using a computer program based on the finite element method. The cylindrical unit cell formulation is used by modeling one column and its surrounding soft soil with confined axisymmetric behaviour. The computer program incorporates the Biot consolidation theory (coupled formulation of the flow and equilibrium equations) with constitutive relations simulated by the pqθ critical state model. The following parameters are analysed: the replacement area ratio, the deformability of the column material, the thickness of the soft soil, the deformability of the fill and the friction angle of the column material. Based on the results of this study, a new design method is proposed, relating the settlement improvement factor to the two factors that revealed major influence: the replacement area ratio and the ratio between the deformability of the soft soil and the deformability of the column material.  相似文献

Septic systems located near coastal waterways can contribute to nutrients that lead to eutrophication, harmful algal blooms, and high levels of fecal coliforms such as E. coli. This study defines pathways and timescales of nitrogen transport released from septic systems using a groundwater-flow and nitrogen transport model of a coastal subdivision connected to 2,000 septic systems and dissected by a dense network of canals. Lift station effluent data are used as a proxy to quantify average household septic nitrogen and fluid contributions of 11 kg/year and 160 m3/year, respectively. These fluxes are upscaled and applied to five sewer conversion zones, each having a known number of septic systems. Model results provide a basis for assessing nitrogen transport timescales associated with (1) coastal groundwaters for regions with high septic density near the coastline and (2) groundwater–canal interaction. Timescales associated with nitrogen removal by natural groundwater flow in a sandy surficial aquifer, following septic to sewer conversion, are predicted by the model to be on the order of 2–3 years for 50% reduction and 8–10 years for 90% reduction. Both numerical and collected field data indicate that canals significantly influence groundwater flow and have the potential to convey nitrogen to coastal waters at rates several orders of magnitude higher than introduced by submarine discharge along the coast. Pre and post sewer conversion data on nitrate and total nitrogen in shallow groundwater from a nearby field site, obtained post-model development, support the nitrogen concentrations and timescales predicted by the numerical model.

A numerical modelling approach is used to validate the physical and geological reliability of the ablative subduction mechanism during Alpine convergence in order to interpret the tectonic and metamorphic evolution of an inner portion of the Alpine belt: the Austroalpine Domain. The model predictions and the natural data for the Austroalpine of the Western Alps agree very well in terms of PT peak conditions, relative chronology of peak and exhumation events, PTt paths, thermal gradients and the tectonic evolution of the continental rocks. These findings suggest that a pre‐collisional evolution of this domain, with the burial of the continental rocks (induced by ablative subduction of the overriding Adria plate) and their exhumation (driven by an upwelling flow generated in a hydrated mantle wedge) could be a valid mechanism that reproduces the actual tectono‐metamorphic configuration of this part of the Alps. There is less agreement between the model predictions and the natural data for the Austroalpine of the Central‐Eastern Alps. Based on the natural data available in the literature, a critical discussion of the other proposed mechanisms is presented, and additional geological factors that should be considered within the numerical model are suggested to improve the fitting to the numerical results; these factors include variations in the continental and/or oceanic thickness, variation of the subduction rate and/or slab dip, the initial thermal state of the passive margin, the occurrence of continental collision and an oblique convergence.  相似文献

This paper presents laboratory experiments and numerical simulations of effects of submerged obstacles on tsunami-like solitary wave and its run-up. This study was carried out for the breaking and non-breaking solitary waves on 1:19.85 uniform slope which contains a submerged obstacle. New laboratory experiments are performed to describe the mitigation of tsunami amplitude and run-up under the effect of submerged obstacles. We are based on experimental results obtained to validate the numerical model. The numerical modeling using COULWAVE aims essentially to show the effect of the obstacle on the shape of solitary wave and the limit of this effect. Using a multiple nonlinear regression, we have determined a model to estimate height of run-up according to the amplitude of the wave and the obstacle peak depth.  相似文献

A numerical method that takes into account the coupling between the rigidities of the piles, the cap, and the column has been developed for analyzing the response of pile group supported columns. Special attention is given to consideration of pile cap flexibility. A load transfer approach using tz/qz and py curves is used for the analysis of single piles. The finite element technique is used to combine the pile stiffness with the stiffness of the cap and column. The numerical method developed has been verified by comparing the results with other numerical methods for pile groups. Through comparative studies, it has been found that the maximum load on the individual piles in a group is highly influenced by pile cap flexibility. The prediction of the lateral loads and bending moments in the pile cap is much more conservative in the present analysis than in FBPier 3.0 and shows a definitely larger lateral load and bending moment for various cap thicknesses.  相似文献

In this paper the powder snow avalanche is considered as a two-phase flow (air and snow particles). The equations governing this flow are the fluid mechanics conservation laws. The mass and the momentum conservation are considered for each phase. The interaction between the two phases takes into account the drag force between the particle and the air. Owing to high turbulence in the powder flow, a closure model was used based on a modified k - model in order to take into account the reduction of turbulence energy by the particles. The dense avalanche is modeled using the shallow water equations. The formation and the development of the powder avalanche is modeled using a mass and momentum exchanges between the powder flow and the dense flow. The flow area is digitized horizontally and vertically using a finite elements mesh. The numerical scheme is obtained by integrating the equations on each cell. The model thus built was calibrated using laboratory measurements of density current carried out in a flume. The model was successfully applied to reproduce many avalanches observed in France. At the end of this paper, an application of this model to an engineering case study is presented. It concerns the Uzengili path where an avalanche occurred in 1993. In this paper we use the integrated dense/powder avalanche model to define the effect of a powder avalanche flow in this path. Different simulations allow display of maps of the exposed zones for different available snow depths in the starting zone. The results were mapped in terms of dynamic pressure field and recommendations are proposed to the local authorities.  相似文献

The conventional interpretation methods of pressuremeter testing effectively approximate pressuremeter membranes as infinitely long. As a result, the effects of the two‐dimensional geometry of pressuremeters are ignored, leading to an overestimation of soil shear strength by pressuremeter testing, as demonstrated in several previous studies. This paper presents results of a numerical study of two‐dimensional geometry effects on self‐boring pressuremeter tests in undrained clay. The results are obtained using critical state soil models with an effective stress formulation. This is in contrast to most (if not all) existing studies on pressuremeter geometry effects, which were based on perfectly plastic soil models (e.g. Yu (Cavity expansion theory and its application to the analysis of pressuremeters. DPhil Thesis, The University of Oxford, 1990), Yeung and Carter (Proc. 3rd Int. Symp. on Pressuremeters, 1990), and Houlsby and Carter (Géotechnique, 1993; 43 (4):567–576)). The present study suggests that the overestimation of soil strength due to the neglect of finite pressuremeter length is significantly affected by the soil model used in the calculations. It is found that for clays with a high overconsolidation ratio (OCR) the strength overestimation predicted using critical state soil models could be considerably smaller than that predicted using perfectly plastic soil models. The main conclusion of this numerical study is that care must be exercised before directly applying any numerically determined pressuremeter geometry correction factors in practice. This paper introduces an automated deterministic method for the calibration of the Modified Cam-Clay and hypoplastic clay model. The calibration is structured in a hierarchical order established based on the apriori sensitivity study performed. The proposed method favours the clear physical meaning of the model parameters to a complete optimization of the objective error function. The method requires only basic laboratory experiments and it is currently implemented in the free-to-use online application called ExCalibre.
