The adsorption of phosphate onto calcite was studied in a series of batch experiments. To avoid the precipitation of phosphate-containing minerals the experiments were conducted using a short reaction time (3 h) and low concentrations of phosphate (?50 μM). Sorption of phosphate on calcite was studied in 11 different calcite-equilibrated solutions that varied in pH, PCO2, ionic strength and activity of Ca2+, and . Our results show strong sorption of phosphate onto calcite. The kinetics of phosphate sorption onto calcite are fast; adsorption is complete within 2-3 h while desorption is complete in less than 0.5 h. The reversibility of the sorption process indicates that phosphate is not incorporated into the calcite crystal lattice under our experimental conditions. Precipitation of phosphate-containing phases does not seem to take place in systems with ?50 μM total phosphate, in spite of a high degree of super-saturation with respect to hydroxyapatite (SIHAP ? 7.83). The amount of phosphate adsorbed varied with the solution composition, in particular, adsorption increases as the activity decreases (at constant pH) and as pH increases (at constant activity). The primary effect of ionic strength on phosphate sorption onto calcite is its influence on the activity of the different aqueous phosphate species. The experimental results were modeled satisfactorily using the constant capacitance model with >CaPO4Ca0 and either >CaHPO4Ca+ or > as the adsorbed surface species. Generally the model captures the variation in phosphate adsorption onto calcite as a function of solution composition, though it was necessary to include two types of sorption sites (strong and weak) in the model to reproduce the convex shape of the sorption isotherms.  相似文献

The fate of arsenic in groundwater depends largely on its interaction with mineral surfaces. We investigated the kinetics of As(III) oxidation by aquifer materials collected from the USGS research site at Cape Cod, MA, USA, by conducting laboratory experiments. Five different solid samples with similar specific surface areas (0.6-0.9 m2 g−1) and reductively extractable iron contents (18-26 μmol m−2), but with varying total manganese contents (0.5-3.5 μmol m−2) were used. Both dissolved and adsorbed As(III) and As(V) concentrations were measured with time up to 250 h. The As(III) removal rate from solution increased with increasing solid manganese content, suggesting that manganese oxide is responsible for the oxidation of As(III). Under all conditions, dissolved As(V) concentrations were very low. A quantitative model was developed to simulate the extent and kinetics of arsenic transformation by aquifer materials. The model included: (1) reversible rate-limited adsorption of As(III) onto both oxidative and non-oxidative (adsorptive) sites, (2) irreversible rate-limited oxidation of As(III), and (3) equilibrium adsorption of As(V) onto adsorptive sites. Rate constants for these processes, as well as the total oxidative site densities were used as the fitting parameters. The total adsorptive site densities were estimated based on the measured specific surface area of each material. The best fit was provided by considering one fast and one slow site for each adsorptive and oxidative site. The fitting parameters were obtained using the kinetic data for the most reactive aquifer material at different initial As(III) concentrations. Using the same parameters to simulate As(III) and As(V) surface reactions, the model predictions were compared to observations for aquifer materials with different manganese contents. The model simulated the experimental data very well for all materials at all initial As(III) concentrations. The As(V) production rate was related to the concentrations of the free oxidative surface sites and dissolved As(III), as with apparent second-order rate constants of and for the fast and the slow oxidative sites, respectively. The As(III) removal rate decreased approximately by half for a pH increase from 4 to 7. The pH dependence was explained using the acid-base behavior of the surface oxidative sites by considering a surface pKa = 6.2 (I = 0). In the presence of excess surface adsorptive and oxidative sites, phosphate diminished the rate of As(III) removal and As(V) production only slightly due to its interaction with the oxidative sites. The observed As(III) oxidation rate here is consistent with previous observations of As(III) oxidation over short transport distances during field-scale transport experiments. The model developed here may be incorporated into groundwater transport models to predict arsenic speciation and transport in chemically heterogeneous systems.  相似文献

The composition of carbonate minerals formed in past and present oceans is assumed to be significantly controlled by temperature and seawater composition. To determine if and how temperature is kinetically responsible for the amount of Mg incorporated in calcite, we quantified the influence of temperature and specific dissolved components on the complex mechanism of calcite precipitation in seawater. A kinetic study was carried out in artificial seawater and NaCl-CaCl2 solutions, each having a total ionic strength of 0.7 M. The constant addition technique was used to maintain [Ca2+] at 10.5 mmol kg−1 while [] was varied to isolate the role of this variable on the precipitation rate of calcite. Our results show that the overall reaction of calcite precipitation in both seawater and NaCl-CaCl2 solutions is dominated by the following reaction:

Forward dissolution rates of Na-Montmorillonite (Wyoming) SWy-2 smectite (Ca0.06Na0.56)[Al3.08Fe(III)0.38Mg0.54] [Si7.93 Al0.07]O20(OH)4 were measured at 25 °C in a mixed-flow reactor equipped with interior dialysis compartment (6-8 kDa membrane) as a function of pH (1-12), dissolved carbonate (0.5-10 mM), phosphate (10−5 to 0.03 M), and nine organic ligands (acetate, oxalate, citrate, EDTA, alginate, glucuronic acid, 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, gluconate, and glucosamine) in the concentration range from 10−5 to 0.03 M. In organic-free solutions, the Si-based rates decrease with increasing pH at 1 ? pH ? 8 with a slope close to −0.2. At 9 ? pH ? 12, the Si-based rates increase with a slope of ∼0.3. In contrast, non-stoichiometric Mg release weakly depends on pH at 1 ? pH ? 12 and decreases with increasing pH. The empirical expression describing Si-release rates [R, mol/cm2/s] obtained in the present study at 25 °C, I = 0.01 M is given by

Experiments were performed herein to investigate the rates and products of heterogeneous reduction of Tc(VII) by Fe(II) adsorbed to hematite and goethite, and by Fe(II) associated with a dithionite-citrate-bicarbonate (DCB) reduced natural phyllosilicate mixture [structural, ion-exchangeable, and edge-complexed Fe(II)] containing vermiculite, illite, and muscovite. The heterogeneous reduction of Tc(VII) by Fe(II) adsorbed to the Fe(III) oxides increased with increasing pH and was coincident with a second event of adsorption. The reaction was almost instantaneous above pH 7. In contrast, the reduction rates of Tc(VII) by DCB-reduced phyllosilicates were not sensitive to pH or to added that adsorbed to the clay. The reduction kinetics were orders of magnitude slower than observed for the Fe(III) oxides, and appeared to be controlled by structural Fe(II). The following affinity series for heterogeneous Tc(VII) reduction by Fe(II) was suggested by the experimental results: aqueous Fe(II) ∼ adsorbed Fe(II) in phyllosilicates [ion-exchangeable and some edge-complexed Fe(II)] ? structural Fe(II) in phyllosilicates ? Fe(II) adsorbed on Fe(III) oxides. Tc-EXAFS spectroscopy revealed that the reduction products were virtually identical on hematite and goethite that were comprised primarily of sorbed octahedral TcO2 monomers and dimers with significant Fe(III) in the second coordination shell. The nature of heterogeneous Fe(III) resulting from the redox reaction was ambiguous as probed by Tc-EXAFS spectroscopy, although Mössbauer spectroscopy applied to an experiment with 56Fe-goethite with adsorbed 57Fe(II) implied that redox product Fe(III) was goethite-like. The Tc(IV) reduction product formed on the DCB-reduced phyllosilicates was different from the Fe(III) oxides, and was more similar to Tc(IV) oxyhydroxide in its second coordination shell. The heterogeneous reduction of Tc(VII) to less soluble forms by Fe(III) oxide-adsorbed Fe(II) and structural Fe(II) in phyllosilicates may be an important geochemical process that will proceed at very different rates and that will yield different surface species depending on subsurface pH and mineralogy.  相似文献

Ammoniojarosite [(NH4,H3O)Fe3(OH)6(SO4)2], a poorly soluble basic ferric sulfate, was produced by microbiological oxidation of ferrous sulfate at pH 2.0-3.0 over a range of concentrations (5.4-805 mM) and temperatures (22-65 °C). Ammoniojarosites were also produced by chemical (abiotic) procedures in parallel thermal (36-95 °C) experiments. At 36 °C, schwertmannite [ideally Fe8O8(OH)6(SO4)] was the only solid product formed at <10 mM concentrations. Between 11.5 and 85.4 mM , a mixed product of ammoniojarosite and schwertmannite precipitated, as identified by X-ray diffraction. In excess of 165 mM , ammoniojarosite was the only solid phase produced. An increase in the incubation temperature using thermoacidophiles at 45 and 65 °C accelerated the formation of ammoniojarosite in culture solutions containing 165 mM . Both the biogenic and chemical ammoniojarosites were yellow (2Y-4Y in Munsell hue), low surface area (<1 m2/g), well crystalline materials with average co and ao unit cell parameters of 17.467 ± 0.048 Å and 7.330 ± 0.006 Å, respectively. Strong positive correlations were observed between unit cell axial ratios (co/ao) and increasing synthesis temperature in both biotic and abiotic systems. All samples were N deficient compared to stoichiometric ammoniojarosite, and both chemical and X-ray data indicated partial replacement of by H3O+ to form solid solutions with 0.14-0.24 mole H3O+ per formula unit. The morphology of the biogenic jarosites included aggregated discs, pseudo-cubic crystals and botryoidal particles, whereas the chemical specimens prepared at 36-95 °C were composed of irregular crystals with angular edges. Morphological information may thus be useful to evaluate environmental parameters and mode of formation. The data may also have application in predicting phase boundary conditions for Fe(III) precipitation in biogeochemical processes and treatment systems involving acid sulfate waters.  相似文献

Arsenic, iron and sulfur co-diagenesis in lake sediments   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Profiles of porewater pH and dissolved As, Fe, Mn, sulfate, total sulfide (ΣS−II), total zero-valent sulfur (ΣS0), organic carbon and major ion concentrations, as well as those of solid As, acid-volatile sulfide (AVS), total S, Fe, Mn, Al, organic C, 210Pb and 137Cs were determined in the sediment of four lakes spanning a range of redox and geochemical conditions. An inverse modeling approach, based on a one-dimensional transport-reaction equation assuming steady-state, was applied to the porewater As profiles and used to constrain the net rates of reactions involving As (). The model defines depth intervals where As is either released to (positive ) or removed from (negative ) the porewaters. At two of the sites, whose bottom water were oxygenated at sampling time, a production zone ( = 12 × 10−18 mol cm−3 s−1-71 × 10−18 mol cm−3 s−1) is inferred a few cm below the sediment-water interface, coincident with sharp porewater As and Fe peaks that indicate an intense coupled recycling of As and Fe. This process is confirmed by solid As and Fe maxima just below the sediment surface. In these two lakes a zone of As consumption ( = −5 × 10−18 mol cm−3 s−1 to −53 × 10−18 mol cm−3 s−1), attributed to the slow adsorption of As to authigenic Fe oxyhydroxides, occurs just above the production zone. A second-order rate constant of 0.12 ± 0.03 cm3 mol−1 s−1 is estimated for this adsorption reaction.Such features in the porewater and solid profiles were absent from the two other lakes that develop a seasonally anoxic hypolimnion. Thermodynamic calculations indicate that the porewaters of the four lakes, when sulfidic (i.e., ΣS−II ? 0.1 μM), were undersaturated with respect to all known solid As sulfides; the calculation also predicts the presence of AsV oxythioanions in the sulfidic waters, as suggested by a recent study. In the sulfidic waters, the removal of As ( = −1 × 10−18 mol cm−3 s−1 to −23 × 10−18 mol cm−3 s−1) consistently occurred when saturation, with respect to FeS(s), was reached and when AsV oxythioanions were predicted to be significant components of total dissolved As. This finding has potential implications for As transport in other anoxic waters and should be tested in a wider variety of natural environments.  相似文献

We examined the solubility, mineralogy and geochemical transformations of sedimentary Fe in waterways associated with coastal lowland acid sulfate soils (CLASS). The waterways contained acidic (pH 3.26-3.54), FeIII-rich (27-138 μM) surface water with low molar Cl:SO4 ratios (0.086-5.73). The surficial benthic sediments had high concentrations of oxalate-extractable Fe(III) due to schwertmannite precipitation (kinetically favoured by 28-30% of aqueous surface water Fe being present as the FeIII species). Subsurface sediments contained abundant pore-water HCO3 (6-20 mM) and were reducing (Eh < −100 mV) with pH 6.0-6.5. The development of reducing conditions caused reductive dissolution of buried schwertmannite and goethite (formed via in situ transformation of schwertmannite). As a consequence, pore-water FeII concentrations were high (>2 mM) and were constrained by precipitation-dissolution of siderite. The near-neutral, reducing conditions also promoted SO4-reduction and the formation of acid-volatile sulfide (AVS). The results show, for the first time for CLASS-associated waterways, that sedimentary AVS consisted mainly of disordered mackinawite. In the presence of abundant pore-water FeII, precipitation-dissolution of disordered mackinawite maintained very low (i.e. <0.1 μM) S−II concentrations. Such low concentrations of S−II caused slow rates for conversion of disordered mackinawite to pyrite, thereby resulting in relatively low concentrations of pyrite (<300 μmol g−1 as Fe) compared to disordered mackinawite (up to 590 μmol g−1 as Fe). This study shows that interactions between schwertmannite, goethite, siderite, disordered mackinawite and pyrite control the geochemical behaviour of sedimentary Fe in CLASS-associated waterways.  相似文献

The solubility of Fe-ettringite (Ca6[Fe(OH)6]2(SO4)3 · 26H2O) was measured in a series of precipitation and dissolution experiments at 20 °C and at pH-values between 11.0 and 14.0 using synthesised material. A time-series study showed that equilibrium was reached within 180 days of ageing. After equilibrating, the solid phases were analysed by XRD and TGA while the aqueous solutions were analysed by ICP-OES (calcium, sulphur) and ICP-MS (iron). Fe-ettringite was found to be stable up to pH 13.0. At higher pH-values Fe-monosulphate (Ca4[Fe(OH)6]2(SO4) · 6H2O) and Fe-monocarbonate (Ca4[Fe(OH)6]2(CO3) · 6H2O) are formed. The solubilities of these hydrates at 25 °C are:   相似文献

The dissolution and growth of uranophane [Ca(UO2)2(SiO3OH)2·5H2O] have been examined in Ca- and Si-rich test solutions at low temperatures (20.5 ± 2.0 °C) and near-neutral pH (∼6.0). Uranium-bearing experimental solutions undersaturated and supersaturated with uranophane were prepared in matrices of ∼10−2 M CaCl2 and ∼10−3 M SiO2(aq). The experimental solutions were reacted with synthetic uranophane and analyzed periodically over 10 weeks. Interpretation of the aqueous solution data permitted extraction of a solubility constant for the uranophane dissolution reaction and standard state Gibbs free energy of formation for uranophane ( kJ mol−1).  相似文献

Partitioning of strontium during spontaneous calcite formation was experimentally studied using an advanced CO2-diffusion technique. Results at different precipitation rates and T = 5, 25, and 40 °C show that at constant temperature Sr incorporation into calcite is controlled by the precipitation rate (R in μmol/m2/h) according to the individual expressions

The kinetics of iodide (I) and molecular iodine (I2) oxidation by the manganese oxide mineral birnessite (δ-MnO2) was investigated over the pH range 4.5-6.25. I oxidation to iodate proceeded as a two-step reaction through an I2 intermediate. The rate of the reaction varied with both pH and birnessite concentration, with faster oxidation occurring at lower pH and higher birnessite concentration. The disappearance of I from solution was first order with respect to I concentration, pH, and birnessite concentration, such that −d[I]/dt = k[I][H+][MnO2], where k, the third order rate constant, is equal to 1.08 ± 0.06 × 107 M−2 h−1. The data are consistent with the formation of an inner sphere I surface complex as the first step of the reaction, and the adsorption of I exhibited significant pH dependence. Both I2, and to a lesser extent, sorbed to birnessite. The results indicate that iodine transport in mildly acidic groundwater systems may not be conservative. Because of the higher adsorption of the oxidized I species I2 and , as well as the biophilic nature of I2, redox transformations of iodine must be taken into account when predicting I transport in aquifers and watersheds.  相似文献

Adsorption of germanium on goethite was studied at 25 °C in batch reactors as a function of pH (1-12), germanium concentration in solution (10−7 to 0.002 M) and solid/solution ratio (1.8-17 g/L). The maximal surface site density determined via Ge adsorption experiments at pH from 6 to 10 is equal to 2.5 ± 0.1 μmol/m2. The percentage of adsorbed Ge increases with pH at pH < 9, reaches a maximum at pH ∼ 9 and slightly decreases when pH is further increased to 11. These results allowed generation of a 2-pK Surface Complexation Model (SCM) which implies a constant capacitance of the electric double layer and postulates the presence of two Ge complexes, and , at the goethite-solution interface. Coprecipitation of Ge with iron oxy(hydr)oxides formed during Fe(II) oxidation by atmospheric oxygen or by Fe(III) hydrolysis in neutral solutions led to high Ge incorporations in solid with maximal Ge/Fe molar ratio close to 0.5. The molar Ge/Fe ratio in precipitated solid is proportional to that in the initial solution according to the equation (Ge/Fe)solid = k × (Ge/Fe)solution with 0.7 ? k ? 1.0. The structure of adsorbed and coprecipitated Ge complexes was further characterized using XAFS spectroscopy. In agreement with previous data on oxyanions adsorption on goethite, bi-dentate bi-nuclear surface complexes composed of tetrahedrally coordinated Ge attached to the corners of two adjacent Fe octahedra represent the dominant contribution to the EXAFS signal. Coprecipitated samples with Ge/Fe molar ratios >0.1, and samples not aged in solution (<1 day) having intermediate Ge/Fe ratios (0.01-0.1) show 4 ± 0.3 oxygen atoms at 1.76 ± 0.01 Å around Ge. Samples less concentrated in Ge (0.001 < Ge/Fe < 0.10) and aged longer times in solution (up to 280 days) exhibit a splitting of the first atomic shell with Ge in both tetrahedral (R = 1.77 ± 0.02 Å) and octahedral (R = 1.92 ± 0.03 Å) coordination with oxygen. In these samples, octahedrally coordinated Ge accounts for up to ∼20% of the total Ge. For the least concentrated samples (Ge/Fe < 0.001-0.0001) containing lepidocrocite, 30-50% of total co-precipitated germanium substitutes for Fe in octahedral sites with the next-nearest environment dominated by edge-sharing GeO6-FeO6 linkages (RGe-Fe ∼ 3.06 Å). It follows from the results of our study that the largest structural change of Ge (from tetrahedral to octahedral environment) occurs during its coprecipitation with Fe hydroxide at Ge/Fe molar ratio ?0.0001. These conditions are likely to be met in many superficial aquatic environments at the contact of anoxic groundwaters with surficial oxygenated solutions. Adsorption and coprecipitation of Ge with solid Fe oxy(hydr)oxides and organo-mineral colloids and its consequence for Ge/Si fractionation and Ge geochemical cycle are discussed.  相似文献

Microorganisms and higher plants produce biogenic ligands, such as siderophores, to mobilize Fe that otherwise would be unavailable. In this paper, we study the stability of arsenopyrite (FeAsS), one of the most important natural sources of arsenic on Earth, in the presence of desferrioxamine (DFO-B), a common siderophore ligand, at pH 5. Arsenopyrite specimens from mines in Panasqueira, Portugal (100-149 μm) that contained incrustations of Pb, corresponding to elemental Pb as determined by scanning electron microscopy-electron diffraction spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), were used for this study. Batch dissolution experiments of arsenopyrite (1 g L−1) in the presence of 200 μM DFO-B at initial pH (pH0) 5 were conducted for 110 h. In the presence of DFO-B, release of Fe, As, and Pb showed positive trends with time; less dependency was observed for the release of Fe, As, and Pb in the presence of only water under similar experimental conditions. Detected concentrations of soluble Fe, As, and Pb in suspensions containing only water were found to be ca. 0.09 ± 0.004, 0.15 ± 0.003, and 0.01 ± 0.01 ppm, respectively. In contrast, concentrations of soluble Fe, As, and Pb in suspensions containing DFO-B were found to be 0.4 ± 0.006, 0.27 ± 0.009, and 0.14 ± 0.005 ppm, respectively. Notably, the effectiveness of DFO-B for releasing Pb was ca. 10 times higher than that for releasing Fe. These results cannot be accounted for by thermodynamic considerations, namely, by size-to-charge ratio considerations of metal complexation by DFO-B. As determined by SEM-EDX, elemental sample enrichment analysis supports the idea that the Fe-S subunit bond energy is limiting for Fe release. Likely, the mechanism(s) of dissolution for Pb incrustations is independent and occurs concurrently to that for Fe and As. Our results show that dissolution of arsenopyrite leads to precipitation of elemental sulfur, and is consistent with a non-enzymatic mineral dissolution pathway. Finally, speciation analyses for As indicate variability in the As(III)/As(V) ratio with time, regardless of the presence of DFO-B or water. At reaction times <30 h, As(V) concentrations were found to be 50-70%, regardless of the presence of DFO-B. These results are interpreted to indicate that transformations of As are not imposed by ligand-mediated mechanisms. Experiments were also conducted to study the dissolution behavior of galena (PbS) in the presence of 200 μM at pH0 5. Results show that, unlike arsenopyrite, the dissolution behavior of galena shows coupled increases in pH with decreases in metal solubility at t > 80 h. Oxidative dissolution mechanisms conveying sulfur oxidation bring about the production of {H+}. However, dissolution data trends for arsenopyrite and galena indicate {H+} consumption. It is plausible that the formation of Pb species is dependent on {H+} and {OH}, namely, stable surface hydroxyl complexes of the form (pH50 5.8) and for pH values 5.8 or above.  相似文献

The electrical conductivities of aqueous solutions of Li2SO4 and K2SO4 have been measured at 523-673 K at 20-29 MPa in dilute solutions for molalities up to 2 × 10−2 mol kg−1. These conductivities have been fitted to the conductance equation of Turq, Blum, Bernard, and Kunz with a consensus mixing rule and mean spherical approximation activity coefficients. In the temperature interval 523-653 K, where the dielectric constant, ε, is greater than 14, the electrical conductance data can be fitted by a solution model which includes ion association to form , , and , where M is Li or K. The adjustable parameters of this model are the first and second dissociation constants of the M2SO4. For the 673 K and 300 kg m−3 state point where the Coulomb interactions are the strongest (dielectric constant, ε = 5), models with more extensive association give good fits to the data. In the case of the Li2SO4 model, including the multi-ion associate, , gave an extremely good fit to the conductance data.  相似文献
