Tropical cyclones (TC) are recognized to modify the thermal structure of the upper ocean through the process of vertical mixing. Assessing the role this mixing plays in the overall stratification of the upper ocean is difficult, due to the relatively short and incomplete instrumental record. Proxy records for both TC landfalls and oceanographic stratification are preserved within the geological record and provide insight for how past changes in TC‐induced mixing have potentially affected water column structure prior to the instrumental record. Here we provide the first comparison between previously published paleo‐reconstructions of vertical ocean density and tropical cyclone activity from the western North Atlantic. A prominent lull in TC activity has been observed prior to approximately 1700 CE that extends back several centuries. This interval of low TC activity is shown to be concurrent with the timing of increased ocean stratification near Great Bahama Bank, potentially due in part to reduced TC‐induced mixing. To test whether this relationship is feasible, we present numerical results from a coarse‐resolution ocean general circulation model experiment isolating the effect of TC surface wind forcing on the upper ocean. An anomaly of roughly 0.12 kg m?3 in vertical stratification occurs above and below the mixed layer for model runs with and without TC mixing. This anomaly is roughly 25% of the entire paleo‐density signal observed just prior to 1700 CE. These results suggest that TC mixing alone cannot completely explain the density anomaly observed prior to 1700 CE, but support TC variability as an important contributor to enhancing oceanic stratification during this interval. Time-series wind and wave measurements were carried out onboard INS Sagardhwani in the central Bay of Bengal during BOBMEX-99.
Various other marine meteorological and oceanographic measurements relevant to monsoon studies were also collected simultaneously.
The observed variations of wind and waves and the associated mixed layer depth (MLD) variability based on both temperature
and density criteria at 3 hourly intervals are presented in this paper as a case study. At the time-series location (13‡N,
87‡E) wind varied between 6 and 16m/s and the predominant direction was southwesterly. The significant wave height and period
varied from 1.9 to 3.7m and 8 to 13 s respectively. Some of the available statistical predictive methods for the determination
of MLD by forced mixing are utilized to test the extent of mechanical mixing within the top layer of water by the local wind
and wave activity. The same is extended to formulate a new empirical relation for gross estimation of effective depth within
which the sound energy is generally trapped during its transmission in the surface duct. The present analysis aiming for estimation
of observed MLD variability (35 to 75 m) using the suggested simple empirical relation reveals that, the mixed layer variability
observed during the experiment depends on both local ocean variability as well as remote forcing as reported earlier. 相似文献

Time-series data on upper-ocean temperature, Vessel-Mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (VM-ADCP) measured currents
and surface meteorological parameters have been obtained for the first time in the southern Bay of Bengal at 7‡N, 10‡N, and
13‡N locations along 87‡E during October–November, 1998 under BOBMEX-Pilot programme. These data have been analysed to examine
the diurnal variability of upper oceanic heat budget and to estimate the eddy diffusivity coefficient of heat in the upper
layer. Diurnal variation of near-surface temperature is typical at northern location (13‡N) with a range of 0.5‡C while the
diurnal range of temperature is enhanced to 0.8‡C at the central location (10‡N) due to intense solar radiation (1050 W/m2), clear skies and low wind speeds. At the southern location (7‡N), the diurnal variation of temperature is atypical with
the minimum temperature occurring at 2000 hrs instead of at early morning hours. In general, the diurnal curve of temperature
penetrated up to 15 to 20 m with decreasing diurnal range with depth. The VM-ADCP measured horizontal currents in the upper
ocean were predominantly easterly/northeasterly at southern location, north/northerly at central location and northwesterly
at northern location, thus describing a large-scale cyclonic gyre with the northward meridional flow along 87‡E. The magnitudes
of heat loss at the surface due to air-sea heat exchanges and in the upper 50 m layer due to vertical diffusion of heat are
highest at the southern location where intense convective activity followed by overcast skies and synoptic disturbance prevailed
in the lower atmosphere. This and the estimated higher value (0.0235 m2/s) of eddy diffusivity coefficient of heat in the upper ocean (0–50 m depth) suggest that 1-D processes controlled the upper
layer heat budget at the southern location. On the other hand, during the fair weather conditions, at the central and northern
locations, the upper layer gained heat energy, while the sea surface lost (gained) heat energy at northern (central) location.
This and lower values of eddy diffusivity coefficient of heat (0.0045 and 0.0150 m2/s) and the northward intensification of horizontal currents at these locations suggest the greater role of horizontal heat
advection over the 1-D processes in the upper ocean heat budget at these two locations. 相似文献

Thermodynamic structure of the marine atmosphere in the region between 80 and 87‡E along 13‡N over the Bay of Bengal was studied
using 13 high resolution radiosonde profiles from surface-400 hPa collected onboard ORV Sagar Kanya during the period 27th–30th
August, during BOBMEX-99. Saturation point concept, mixing line analysis and conserved variable diagrams have been used to
identify boundary layer characteristics such as air mass movement and stability of the atmosphere. The results showed relatively
dry air near the ocean surface between 1000 and 950 hPa. This feature is confirmed by the conserved tetav structure in this layer. Further, tetav seldom showed any inversions in this region. The tetae and tetaes profiles showed persistent low cloud layers between 900 and 700 hPa. The conserved variable diagrams (tetae-q) showed the existence of double mixing line structures approximately at 950 and 700 hPa levels. 相似文献

Underway current velocity profiles were combined with temperature and salinity profiles at fixed stations to describe tidal
and subtidal flow patterns in the middle of the northernmost Chilean fjord, Estuario Reloncaví. This is the first study involving
current velocity measurements in this fjord. Reloncaví fjord is 55 km long, 2 km wide, and on average is 170 m deep. Measurements
concentrated around a marked bend of the coastline, where an 8-km along-fjord transect was sampled during a semidiurnal tidal
cycle in March 2002 and a 2-km cross-fjord transect was occupied, also during a semidiurnal cycle, in May 2004. The fjord
hydrography showed a relatively thin (<5 m deep), continuously stratified, buoyant layer with stratification values >4 kg
m−3 per meter of depth. Below this thin layer, the water was relatively homogeneous. Semidiurnal tidal currents had low amplitudes
(<10 cm s−1) that allowed the persistence of a surface front throughout the tidal cycle. The front oscillated with a period of ca. 2.5
h and showed excursions of 2 km. The front oscillations could have been produced by a lateral seiche that corresponds to the
natural period of oscillation across the fjord. This front could have also caused large (2 h) phase lags in the semidiurnal
tidal currents, from one end of the transect to the other, within the buoyant layer. Tidal phases were relatively uniform
underneath this buoyant layer. Subtidal flows showed a 3-layer pattern consisting of a surface layer (8 m thick, of 5 cm s−1 surface outflow), an intermediate layer (70 m thick, of 3 cm s−1 net inflow), and a bottom layer (below 80 m depth, of 3 cm s−1 net outflow). The surface outflow and, to a certain extent, the inflow layer were related to the buoyant water interacting
with the ambient oceanic water. The inflowing layer and the bottom outflow were attributed to nonlinear effects associated
with a tidal wave that reflects at the fjord's head. The weak subtidal currents followed the morphology of the bend and caused
downwelling on the inside and upwelling on the outside part of the bend. 相似文献

Rising atmospheric pCO2 and ocean acidification originating from human activities could result in increased dissolution of metastable carbonate minerals
in shallow-water marine sediments. In the present study, in situ dissolution of carbonate sedimentary particles in Devil’s
Hole, Bermuda, was observed during summer when thermally driven density stratification restricted mixing between the bottom
water and the surface mixed layer and microbial decomposition of organic matter in the subthermocline layer produced pCO2 levels similar to or higher than those levels anticipated by the end of the 21st century. Trends in both seawater chemistry
and the composition of sediments in Devil’s Hole indicate that Mg-calcite minerals are subject to selective dissolution under
conditions of elevated pCO2. The derived rates of dissolution based on observed changes in excess alkalinity and estimates of vertical eddy diffusion
ranged from 0.2 mmol to 0.8 mmol CaCO3 m−2 h−1. On a yearly basis, this range corresponds to 175–701 g CaCO3 m−2 year−1; the latter rate is close to 50% of the estimate of the current average global coral reef calcification rate of about 1,500 g
CaCO3 m−2 year−1. Considering a reduction in marine calcification of 40% by the year 2100, or 90% by 2300, as a result of surface ocean acidification,
the combination of high rates of carbonate dissolution and reduced rates of calcification implies that coral reefs and other
carbonate sediment environments within the 21st and following centuries could be subject to a net loss in carbonate material
as a result of increasing pCO2 arising from burning of fossil fuels. 相似文献

The atmospheric boundary layer characteristics observed during the BOBMEX-Pilot experiment are reported. Surface meteorological
data were acquired continuously through an automatic weather monitoring system and manually every three hours. High resolution
radiosondes were launched to obtain the vertical thermal structure of the atmosphere. The study area was convectively active,
the SSTs were high, surface air was warm and moist, and the surface air moist static energy was among the highest observed
over the tropical oceans. The mean sea air temperature difference was about 1.25‡C and the sea skin temperature was cooler
than bucket SST by 0.5‡C. The atmospheric mixed layer was shallow, fluctuated in response to synoptic conditions from 100
m to 900 m with a mean around 500 m. 相似文献

New multiproxy marine data of the Eemian interglacial (MIS5e) from the Norwegian Sea manifest a cold event with near-glacial surface ocean summer temperatures (3–4 °C). This mid-Eemian cooling divided the otherwise relatively warm interglacial climate and was associated with widespread expansions of winter sea-ice and polar water masses due to changes in atmospheric circulation and ocean stability. While the data also verify a late rather than early last interglacial warm peak, which is in general disharmony with northern hemisphere insolation maximum and the regional climatic progression of the early Holocene, the cold event itself was likely instrumental for delaying the last interglacial climate development in the Polar North when compared with regions farther south. Such a ‘climatic decoupling’ of the Polar region may bear profound implications for the employment of Eemian conditions to help evaluate the present and future state of the Arctic cryosphere during a warming interglacial. 相似文献

Variability of the oceanic boundary layer characteristics in the northern Bay of Bengal during MONTBLEX-90 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Variability of the ocean surface boundary layer characteristics on daily time-scale is studied utilizing the 3-hourly hydrographic data collected at a stationary location (20°N, 89°E) in the Bay of Bengal during August (18th–31st) and September (9th–19th), 1990 under MONTBLEX-90 field programme. The daily variations of temperature, salinity, σ0, mixed layer thickness, stability, heat content and rate of change of heat content in the upper 100 m are discussed in relation to prevailing weather (depressions) and hydrographic conditions (influx of fresh water, presence of eddies). The mixed layer thickness is examined through temperatureand σ0-based criteria considering also the surface salinity in the latter. TheT-based mixed layer thickness is always higher than that of σ0-based thickness. The rate of change of heat content is also computed up to the depth of 20°C and 14°C isotherms which takes into account the vertical motion and hence divergence. With the development of a low into a deep depression close to the study area, intense upwelling of subsurface cold waters is noticed from 100 m to the bottom of the surface mixed layer (20m) from 18th to 20th August. The upwelling is weakened by 21st August when the depression moved away from the study location. This variation of upwelling is supported by the variation of surface mixed layer thickness, static stability at 30 m depth, heat content in the upper 100 m and the heat content up to the depth of 20°C isotherm from 18th to 21st August. The rate of change of heat content in the upper 100 m and up to the depths of 20°C and 14°C isotherms leads to net heat storage during August and to net heat depletion during September. This together with the net surface heat gain lead to an import (197Wm?2) and export (233 Wm?2) of heat during August and September respectively through horizontal advective processes. These advective processes are attributed to the presence and movement of a warm core eddy through the study location. 相似文献

This paper addresses temporal variability in bottom hypoxia in broad shallow areas of Mobile Bay, Alabama. Time-series data
collected in the summer of 2004 from one station (mean depth of 4 m) exhibit bottom dissolved oxygen (DO) variations associated
with various time scales of hours to days. Despite a large velocity shear, stratification was strong enough to suppress vertical
mixing most of the time. Bottom DO was closely related to the vertical salinity gradient (ΔS). Hypoxia seldom occurred when
ΔS (over 2.5 m) was <2 psu and occurred almost all the time when ΔS was >8 psu in the absence of extreme events like hurricanes.
Oxygen balance between vertical mixing and total oxygen demand was considered for bottom water from which oxygen demand and
diffusive oxygen flux were estimated. The estimated decay rates at 20°C ranging between 0.175–0.322 d−1 and the corresponding oxygen consumption as large as 7.4 g O2 m−2 d−1 fall at the upper limit of previously reported ranges. The diffusive oxygen flux and the corresponding vertical diffusivity
estimated for well mixed conditions range between 8.6–9.5 g O2 m−2 d−1 and 2.6–2.9 m2 d−1, respectively. Mobile Bay hypoxia is likely to be associated with a large oxygen demand, supported by both water column and
sediment oxygen demands, so that oxygen supply from surface water during destratification events would be quickly exhausted
to return to hypoxic conditions within a few hours to days after destratification events are terminated. 相似文献

The seasonality of carbon dioxide partial pressure(pCO_2).air-sea CO_2 fluxes and associated environmental parameters were investigated in the Antarctic coastal waters. The in-situ survey was carried out from the austral summer till the onset of winter[January 2012,February 2010 and March 2009) in the Enderby Basin.Rapid decrease in pCO_2 was evident under the sea-ice cover in January, when both water column and sea-ice algal activity resulted in the removal of nutrients and dissolved inorganic carbon(DIC) and increase in pH.The major highlight of this study is the shift in the dominant biogeochemical factors from summer to early winter.Nutrient limitation(low Si/N),sea-ice cover, low photosynthetically active radiation(PAR),deep mixed layer and high upwelling velocity contributed towards higher pCO_2during March(early winter).CO_2 fluxes suggest that the Enderby Basin acts as a strong CO_2 sink during January(-81 mmol m~2 d~(-1)),however it acts as a weak sink of CO_2 with-2.4 and-1.7 mmol m~(-2) d~(-1)during February and March, respectively. The present work, concludes that sea ice plays a dual role towards climate change,by decreasing sea surface PCO_2 in summer and enhancing in early winter. Our observations emphasize the need to address seasonal sea-ice driven CO_2 flux dynamics in assessing Antarctic contributions to the global oceanic CO_2 budget. 相似文献

Spatial variations in the density and velocity fields have been observed in the Gareloch (Scotland) during surveys in 1987–1988
and 1993–1994. The variation of the density field has been analyzed on a variety of time scales from semidiurnal to seasonal
in order to quantify effects caused by the forcing factors of tidal mixing, freshwater input, and wind. Initial results indicate
that water density in the loch is controlled (to a major degree) by the freshwater input from runoff from the local catchment
area and from freshwater entering on the flood tide from the Clyde Estuary. It is estimated that during winter periods the
high freshwater flows from the rivers Leven and Clyde into the Clyde Estuary account for up to 75% of the freshwater creating
the density structure in the loch. Analysis of long-term dissolved oxygen data reveals that major bottom water renewals occurred
between July and January in the years 1987–1994. Major bottom water dissolved oxygen renewals have a general trend but during
the year sporadic renewals can take place due to abnormal dry spells increasing the density of the water entering from the
Clyde, or consistently strong winds from the north reducing stratification in the loch and producing better mixed conditions.
Velocities vary spatially, with the highest velocities of up to 0.6 m s–1 being associated with the velocity jet effect at the constriction at the sill of the loch. Observed near-surface mid-loch
velocities increased as the vertical density gradients in the upper layers increased. This indicates for the observed conditions
that increased stratification in the upper layers inhibits the entrainment rate and hence rate of gain of thickness of the
wind-driven surface layer, resulting in increased surface velocities for a given wind speed and direction. The main flow is
concentrated in the upper 10 m and velocities below 10 m are low. Observed mean spring tide surface velocities are on average
30% greater than mean neap tide surface velocities.

Characteristics of aerosols in the Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) obtained from a bistatic CW lidar at Trivandrum for the
last one decade are used to investigate the role of ABL micro-meteorological processes in controlling the altitude distribution
and size spectrum. The altitude structure of number density shows three distinct zones depending on the prevailing boundary
layer feature; viz, the well-mixed region, entertainment region and upper mixing region. In the lower altitudes vertical mixing
is very strong (the well-mixed region) the upper limit of which is defined as aerosol-mixing height, is closely associated
with the low level inversion. The aerosol mixing height generally lies in the range 150 to 400 m showing a strong dependence
on the vertical eddy mixing processes in ABL. Above this altitude, the number density decreases almost exponentially with
increase in altitude with a scale height of 0.5–1.5 km. The aerosol mixing height is closely associated with the height of
the Thermal Internal Boundary Layer (TIBL). Sea-spray aerosols generated as a result of the interaction of surface wind with
sea surface forms an important component of mixing region aerosols at this location. This component shows a non-linear dependence
on wind speed. On an average, depending on the season, the mixing region contributes about 10–30% of the columnar aerosol
optical depth (AOD) at 0.5Μm wavelength. A long term increasing trend (∼ 2.8% per year) is observed in mixing region AOD from
1989 to 1997. A study on the development of the aerosols in the nocturnal mixing region shows that the convectively driven
daytime altitude structure continues to persist for about 4–5 hrs. after the sunset and thereafter the altitude structure
is governed by vertical structure of horizontal wind. Stratified aerosol layers associated with stratified turbulence is very
common during the late night hours. 相似文献

Hydrographic patterns and chlorophyll concentrations in the Columbia River estuary were compared for spring and summer periods
during 2004 through 2006. Riverine and oceanic sources of chlorophyll were evaluated at stations along a 27-km along-estuary
transect in relation to time series of wind stress, river flow, and tidal stage. Patterns of chlorophyll concentration varied
between seasons and years. In spring, the chlorophyll distribution was dominated by high concentrations from freshwater sources.
Periods of increased stream flow limited riverine chlorophyll production. In summer, conversely, upwelling winds induced input
of high-salinity water from the ocean to the estuary, and this water was often associated with relatively high chlorophyll
concentrations. The frequency, duration, and intensity of upwelling events varied both seasonally and interannually, and this
variation affected the timing and magnitude of coastally derived material imported to the estuary. The main source of chlorophyll
thus varied from riverine in spring to coastal in summer. In both spring and summer seasons and among years, modulation of
the spring/neap tidal cycle determined stratification, patterns of mixing, and the fate of (especially freshwater) phytoplankton.
Spring tides had higher mixing and neap tides greater stratification, which affected the vertical distribution of chlorophyll.
The Columbia River differs from the more tidally dominated coastal estuaries in the Pacific Northwest by its large riverine
phytoplankton production and transfer of this biogenic material to the estuary and coastal ocean. However, all Pacific Northwest
coastal estuaries investigated to date have exhibited advection of coastally derived chlorophyll during the upwelling season.
This constitutes a fundamental difference between Pacific Northwest estuaries and systems not bounded by a coastal upwelling
zone. 相似文献

Western tropical Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, and the equatorial Pacific are known as regions of intense bio-chemical-physical
interactions: the Arabian Sea has the largest phytoplankton bloom with seasonal signal, while the equatorial Pacific bloom
is perennial with quasi-permanent upwelling. Here, we studied three dimensional ocean thermodynamics comparing recent ocean
observation with ocean general circulation model (OPYC) experiment combined with remotely sensed chlorophyll pigment concentrations
from the Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS). Using solar radiation parameterization representing observations that a higher
abundance of chlorophyll increases absorption of solar irradiance and heating rate in the upper ocean, we showed that the
mixed layer thickness decreases more than they would be under clear water conditions. These changes in the model mixed layer
were consistent with Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS) observations during the 1994-1995 Arabian Sea experiment and epi-fluorescence
microscopy (EFM) on samples collected during Equatorial Pacific Ocean Climate Study (EPOCS) in November, 1988. In the Arabian
Sea, as the chlorophyll concentrations peak in October (3 mg/m3) after the summer plankton bloom induced by coastal upwelling, the chlorophyll induced biological heating enhanced the sea
surface temperature (SST) by as much as 0.6‡C and sub-layer temperature decreases and sub-layer thickness increases. In the
equatorial Pacific, modest concentrations of chlorophyll less than 0.3 mg/m3 is enough to introduce a meridional differential heating, which results in reducing the equatorial mixed layer thickness
to more than 20 m. The anomalous meridional tilting of the mixed layer bottom enhances off equatorial westward geostrophic
currents. Consequently, the equatorial undercurrent transports more water from west to east. We proposed that these numerical
model experiments with use of satellite andin situ ocean observations are consistent under three dimensional ocean circulation theory combined with solar radiation transfer
process. 相似文献

Trace metal clean techniques were used to sample Hawaii Ocean Time-series (HOT) station ALOHA on seven occasions between November 1998 and October 2002. On three occasions, full water-column profile samples were obtained; on the other four occasions, surface and near-surface euphotic zone profiles were obtained. Together with three other published samplings, this site may have been monitored for “dissolved” (≤0.4 or ≤0.2 μm) Fe more frequently than any other open ocean site in the world.Low Fe concentrations (<0.1 nmol kg−1) are seen in the lower euphotic zone, and Fe concentrations increase to a maximum in intermediate waters. In the deepwaters (>2500 m), the concentrations we observe (0.4-0.5 nmol kg−1) are significantly lower than some other deep North Pacific stations but are similar to values that have been reported for a station 350 miles to the northeast. We attribute these low deepwater values to transport of low-Fe Antarctic Bottom Water into the basin and a balance between Fe regeneration and scavenging in the deep water. Near-surface waters have higher Fe levels than observed in the lower euphotic zone. Significant temporal variability is seen in near-surface Fe concentrations (ranging from 0.2-0.7 nmol kg−1); we attribute these surface Fe fluctuations to variable dust deposition, biological uptake, and changes in the mixed layer depth. This variability could occur only if the surface layer Fe residence time is less than a few years, and based on that constraint, it appears that a higher percentage of the total Fe must be released from North Pacific aerosols compared to North Atlantic aerosols. Surprisingly, significant temporal variability and high particulate Fe concentrations are observed for intermediate waters (1000-1500 m). These features are seen in the depth interval where high δ3He from the nearby Loihi Seamount hydrothermal fields has been observed; the total Fe/3He ratio implies that the hydrothermal vents are the source of the high and variable Fe.The vertical profile of Mn at ALOHA qualitatively resembles other North Pacific Mn profiles with surface and intermediate water maxima, but there are some significant quantitative differences from other reported profiles. The ≤0.4 μm Mn concentration is highest near the surface, decreases sharply in the upper 500 m, then shows an intermediate water maximum at 800 m and then decreases in the deepest waters; these concentrations are higher than observed at a station 350 miles to the northeast that shows similar vertical variations. It appears that there is a significant Mn gradient (throughout the water column) from HOT towards the northeast.Compared to the first valid oceanic Pb data for samples collected in 1976, Pb at ALOHA in 1997-1999 shows decreases in surface waters and waters shallower than 200 m. Pb concentrations in central North Pacific surface waters have decreased by a factor of 2 during the past 25 yr (from ∼65 to ∼30 pmol kg−1); surface water Pb concentrations in the central North Atlantic and central North Pacific are now comparable. We attribute the surface water Pb decrease to the elimination of leaded gasoline in Japan and to some extent by the U.S. and Canada. We attribute most of the remaining Pb in Pacific surface waters to Asian emissions, more likely due to high-temperature industrial activities such as coal burning rather than to leaded gasoline consumption. A 3-year mixed-layer time series from the nearby HALE-ALOHA mooring site (1997-1999) shows that there is an annual cycle in Pb with concentrations ∼20% higher in winter months; this rise may be created by downward mixing of the winter mixed layer into the steep gradient of higher Pb in the upper thermocline (Pb concentrations double between the surface and 200 m). From 200 m to the bottom, Pb concentrations decrease to levels of 5-9 pmol kg−1 near the bottom; for most of the water column, thermocline and deepwater Pb concentrations do not appear to have changed significantly during the 23-yr interval. 相似文献

Profiles of a total of 23 plagioclase crystals erupted within the 1982–1991 and 1993 flows of the Coaxial segment of the Juan
de Fuca ridge, the 1996 flow of the North Gorda ridge, and from the Western Volcanic Zone of the ultra-slow spreading Gakkel
Ridge, have been studied for variations in major and trace element concentrations. We derive equilibration times for the relatively
rapidly diffusing Sr in mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) plagioclase crystals of the order of months to a few years in each case.
All crystals preserve diffusive disequilibria of strontium and barium. Crystal residence times at MORB magmatic temperatures
are thus significantly shorter, of the order of days to a few months at most, precluding prolonged crystal storage in axial
magma chambers and instead pointing to rapid crystal growth (up to ~10−8 cm s−1) and cooling (up to ~1°C h−1) shortly prior to eruption of these samples. Growth of these crystals is therefore inferred to occur almost entirely within
oceanic layer 2 during dike injection. Crystals that grew at lower crustal levels or earlier in the differentiation sequence
appear to have been excluded from the erupted magmas, as might occur if most of the gabbroic rocks in oceanic layer 3 formed
an interlocking crystal framework, with viscosities that are too high to carry earlier formed crystals with the melt. The
vertical extent of eruptible, crystal-poor melt lenses within the gabbroic zone is constrained to ~1 m or less by considering
the width of local equilibrium growth zones, equilibration times, and crystal settling velocities. This lengthscale is consistent
with field evidence from ophiolites. Finally, crystal aggregates within the Gakkel ridge sample studied here are the result
of synneusis within the propagating dike during melt ascent. 相似文献

Changes in the abundance of selected planktic foraminiferal species and some sedimentological parameters at ODP site 728A
were examined to understand the fluctuations in the surface productivity and deep sea oxygenation in the NW Arabian Sea during
last ∼540 kyr. The increased relative abundances of high fertility taxa, i.e., Globigerinita glutinata and Globigerina bulloides mainly during interglacial intervals indicate intense upwelling. Strong SW summer monsoon probably increased the upwelling
in the western Arabian Sea during interglacial intervals and caused high surface productivities due to the lateral transport
of eutrophic waters. Most of the glacial periods (i.e., MIS 2, 4, 6, 8 and 12) are characterized by higher relative abundances
of Neogloboquadrina pachyderma and Neogloboquadrina dutertrei associated with Globigerinoides ruber. The more stratified condition and deep mixed layer due to increased NE winter monsoon are mainly responsible for the higher
relative abundances of N. pachyderma during glacial periods. Some of the glacial intervals (i.e., MIS 6 and 8) are also characterized by pteropod spikes reflecting
deepening of aragonite compensation depth (ACD) and relatively less intense oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) in this region due to
deep sea mixing and thermocline ventilation, and relatively less intense surface productivity during winter monsoon. The interglacial
periods are largely devoid of pteropod shells indicating more aragonite dissolution due to increased intensity of OMZ in the
northwestern Arabian Sea. 相似文献

This paper describes the hydrographic observations in the southeastern Arabian Sea (SEAS) during two cruises carried out in
March–June 2003 as part of the Arabian Sea Monsoon Experiment. The surface hydrography during March–April was dominated by
the intrusion of low-salinity waters from the south; during May–June, the low-salinity waters were beginning to be replaced
by the highsalinity waters from the north. There was considerable mixing at the bottom of the surface mixed layer, leading
to interleaving of low-salinity and high-salinity layers. The flow paths constructed following the spatial patterns of salinity
along the sections mimic those inferred from numerical models. Time-series measurements showed the presence of Persian Gulf
and Red Sea Waters in the SEAS to be intermittent during both cruises: they appeared and disappeared during both the fortnight-long
time series. 相似文献

Recently, the deterioration of water quality in the coastal zones of Lekki Peninsula area of Lagos due to saltwater infiltration
into the freshwater aquifer has become a major concern. With the aim of providing valuable information on the hydrogeologic
system of the aquifers, the subsurface lithology and delineating the groundwater salinity, vertical electrical resistivity
(VES) sounding survey was carried out utilizing surface Schlumberger electrode arrays, and electrode spacing varying between
1 and 150 m. The DC resistivity surveys revealed significant variations in subsurface resistivity. Also, the VES resistivity
curves showed a dominant trend of decreasing resistivity with depth (thus increasing salinity). In general, the presence of
four distinct resistivity zones were delineated viz.: the unconsolidated dry sand (A) having resistivity values ranging between
125 and 1,028 Ωm represent the first layer; the fresh water-saturated soil (zone B) having resistivity values which correspond
to 32–256 Ωm is the second layer; the third layer (zone C) is interpreted as the mixing (transition) zone of fresh with brackish
groundwater. The resistivity of this layer ranges from 4 to 32 Ωm; while layer four (zone D) is characterized with resistivities
values generally below 4 Ωm reflecting an aquifer possibly containing brine. The rock matrix, salinity and water saturation
are the major factors controlling the resistivity of the formation. Moreover, this investigation shows that saline water intrusion
into the aquifers can be accurately mapped using surface DC resistivity method. 相似文献
