The Laki eruption involved 10 fissure-opening episodes thatproduced 15·1 km3 of homogeneous quartz-tholeiite magma. This study focuses on the texture and chemistry of samples fromthe first five episodes, the most productive period of the eruption. The samples comprise pumiceous tephra clasts from early falloutdeposits and lava surface samples from fire-fountaining andcone-building activity. The fluid lava core was periodicallyexposed at the surface upon lobe breakout, and its characteristicsare preserved in glassy selvages from the lava surface. In allsamples, plagioclase is the dominant mineral phase, followedby clinopyroxene and then olivine. Samples contain <7 vol.% of euhedral phenocrysts (>100 µm) with primitivecores [An* = 100 x Ca/(Ca + Na) >70; Fo > 75; En* = 100x Mg/(Mg + Fe) >78] and more evolved rims, and >10 vol.% of skeletal, densely distributed groundmass crystals (<100µm), which are similar in composition to phenocryst rims(tephra: An*5867, Fo7278, En*7281; lava:An*4970, Fo6378, En5778). Tephra and lavahave distinct vesicularity (tephra: >40 vol. %; lava: <40vol. %), groundmass crystal content (tephra: <10 vol. %;lava: 2030 vol. %), and matrix glass composition (tephra:5·45·6 wt % MgO; lava: 4·35·0wt % MgO). Whole-rock and matrix glass compositions define atrend consistent with liquid evolution during in situ crystallizationof groundmass phases. Plagioclaseglass and olivineglassthermometers place the formation of phenocryst cores at 10 kmdepth in a melt with 1 wt % H2O, at near-liquidus temperatures(1150°C). Phenocryst rims and groundmass crystals formedclose to the surface, at 1040°C melt undercoolingand in an 1020°C cooler drier magma (00·1wt % H2O), causing an 10 mol % drop in An content in plagioclase. The shape, internal zoning and number density of groundmasscrystals indicate that they formed under supersaturated conditions.Based on this information, we propose that degassing duringascent had a major role in rapidly undercooling the melt, promptingintensive shallow groundmass crystallization that affected themagma and lava rheology. Petrological and textural differencesbetween tephra and lava reflect variations in the rates of magmaascent and the timing of surface quenching during each eruptiveepisode. That in turn affected the time available for crystallizationand subsequent re-equilibration of the melt to surface (degassed)conditions. During the explosive phases, the rates of magmaascent were high enough to inhibit crystallization, yieldingcrystal-poor tephra. In contrast, pervasive groundmass crystallizationoccurred in the lava, increasing its yield strength and causinga thick rubbly layer to form during flow emplacement. Lava selvagescollected across the flow-field have strikingly homogeneousglass compositions, demonstrating the high thermal efficiencyof fluid lava transport. Cooling is estimated as 0·3°C/km,showing that rubbly surfaced flows can be as thermally efficientas tube-fed phoehoe lavas. Phenocryst zoning patterns are used to identify open-systemmagmatic processes in the products of the 2001 eruption of ShiveluchVolcano, Kamchatka. The lavas and pumices studied are hornblendeplagioclaseandesites with average pre-eruptive temperatures of 840°Cand fO2 of 1·52·1 log units above nickelnickeloxide (NNO). Plagioclase zoning includes oscillatory and patchyzonation and sieve textures. Hornblendes are commonly unzoned, but some show simple, multiple or patchy zoning. Apatite microphenocrystsdisplay normal and reverse zoning of sulphur. The textural similarityof patchy hornblende and plagioclase, together with BaSrsystematics in patchy plagioclase, indicate that the cores ofthese crystals were derived from cumulate material. Plagioclaseliquidequilibria suggest that the patchy texture develops by resorptionduring H2O-undersaturated decompression. When H2O-saturatedcrystallization recommences at lower pressure, reduced pH2Oresults in lower XAn in plagioclase, causing more Al-rich hornblendeto crystallize. Plagioclase cores with diffuse oscillatory zoning, and unzoned hornblende crystals, probably represent a populationof crystals resident in the magma chamber for long periods oftime. In contrast, oscillatory zoning in the rims of plagioclasephenocrysts may reflect eruption dynamics during decompressioncrystallization. Increasing Fe/Al in oscillatory zoned rimssuggests oxidation as a result of degassing of H2O during decompression.A general lack of textural overlap between phenocryst typessuggests that different phenocryst populations were spatiallyor temporally isolated during crystallization. We present evidencethat the host andesite has mixed with both more felsic and moremafic magmas. Olivine and orthopyroxene xenocrysts with reactionor overgrowth rims and strong normal zoning indicate mixingwith basalt. Sieve-textured plagioclase resulted from mixingof a more felsic magma with the host andesite. The mineralogyand mineral compositions of a mafic andesite enclave are identicalto those of the host magma, which implies efficient thermalquenching, and thus small volumes of intruding magma. Mixingof this magma with the host andesite results in phenocryst zoningbecause of differences in dissolved volatile contents. We suggestthat small magma pulses differentiated at depth and ascendedintermittently into the growing magma chamber, producing incrementalvariations in whole-rock compositions. Cyclicity in the Main and Upper Zones of the Bushveld Complex, South Africa: Crystallization from a Zoned Magma Sheet 总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
The major element composition of plagioclase, pyroxene, olivine, and magnetite, and whole-rock 87Sr/86Sr data are presented forthe uppermost 2·1 km of the layered mafic rocks (upperMain Zone and Upper Zone) at Bierkraal in the western BushveldComplex. Initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios are near-constant (0·7073± 0·0001) for 24 samples and imply crystallizationfrom a homogeneous magma sheet without major magma rechargeor assimilation. The 2125 m thick section investigated in drillcore comprises 26 magnetitite and six nelsonite (magnetiteilmeniteapatite)layers and changes up-section from gabbronorite (An72 plagioclase;Mg# 74 clinopyroxene) to magnetiteilmeniteapatitefayaliteferrodiorite (An43; Mg# 5 clinopyroxene; Fo1 olivine). The overallfractionation trend is, however, interrupted by reversals characterizedby higher An% of plagioclase, higher Mg# of pyroxene and olivine, and higher V2O5 of magnetite. In the upper half of the successionthere is also the intermittent presence of cumulus olivine andapatite. These reversals in normal fractionation trends definethe bases of at least nine major cycles. We have calculateda plausible composition for the magma from which this entiresuccession formed. Forward fractional crystallization modelingof this composition predicts an initial increase in total iron,near-constant SiO2 and an increasing density of the residualmagma before magnetite crystallizes. After magnetite beginsto crystallize the residual magma shows a near-constant totaliron, an increase in SiO2 and decrease in density. We explainthe observed cyclicity by bottom crystallization. Initiallymagma stratification developed during crystallization of thebasal gabbronorites. Once magnetite began to crystallize, periodicdensity inversion led to mixing with the overlying magma layer, producing mineralogical breaks between fractionation cycles. The magnetitite and nelsonite layers mainly occur within fractionationcycles, not at their bases. In at least two cases, crystallizationof thick magnetitite layers may have lowered the density ofthe basal layer of melt dramatically, and triggered the proposeddensity inversion, resulting in close, but not perfect, coincidenceof mineralogical breaks and packages of magnetitite layers. Intra-Grain Sr Isotope Evidence for Crystal Recycling and Multiple Magma Reservoirs in the Recent Activity of Stromboli Volcano, Southern Italy 总被引:3,自引:1,他引:3

Over the last several hundred years, Stromboli has been characterizedby steady-state Strombolian activity. The volcanic productsare dominated by degassed and highly porphyritic (HP-magma)black scoria bombs, lapilli and lava flows of basaltic shoshoniticcomposition. Periodically (about one to three events per year),more energetic explosive eruptions also eject light colouredvolatile-rich pumices with low phenocryst content (LP-magma)that have more mafic compositions than the HP-magma. An in situmajor and trace element and Sr isotope microanalysis study ispresented on four samples chosen to characterize the differentmodes of activity at Stromboli: a lava flow (19851986effusive event), a scoria bomb from the normalpresent-day activity of Stromboli (April 1984), and a scoriaand coeval pumice sample from a recent more explosive eruption(September 1996). Plagioclase (An6290) and clinopyroxene(Mg-number between 0·69 and 0·91) phenocrystsin all samples record marked major element variations. Largeand comparable Sr isotope variations have been detected in plagioclaseand clinopyroxene. HP-magma crystals have resorbed cores, witheither high 87Sr/86Sr (0·706350·70630)or low 87Sr/86Sr (0·706140·70608); thelatter values are similar to the values of the outer cores.Mineral rims and glassy groundmasses generally have intermediate87Sr/86Sr (0·706280·70613). Similarly, mineral growth zones with three groups of 87Sr/86Sr values characterizeminerals from the LP-pumice, with the lowest values presentin mineral rims and groundmass glass. These results define amixing process between HP- and LP-magmas, plus crystallizationof clinopyroxene, plagioclase and olivine, occurring in a shallowmagma reservoir that feeds the present-day magmatic activityof Stromboli. An important observation is the presence of athird component (high 87Sr/86Sr in mineral cores) consideredto represent a pre-AD 1900 cumulus crystal mush reservoir situatedjust below the shallow magma chamber. These cumulus phases areincorporated by the LP-magma arriving from depth and transportedinto the shallow reservoir. A rapid decrease of 87Sr/86Sr inthe replenishing LP-magma immediately prior to eruption of theAD 1985 lava flow is associated with an increased volume ofLP-magma in the shallow magma chamber. The HP-magma in the shallowreservoir is not fully degassed when it interacts with the LP-magma,making efficient mixing possible that ultimately produces awell overturned homogeneous magma. Further degassing and crystallizationoccur at shallower levels as the HP-magma moves through a conduitto the surface. After 11·5 ka of quiescence (24·513 ka),the Nevado de Toluca volcano started a 2500 year period of activity. This period was characterized by a dome destruction event at13 ka, a small Plinian event at 12·1 ka, and a largePlinian eruption at 10·5 ka. About 10 km3 of magma waserupted that was homogeneous in composition (63·365·7SiO2 wt % whole-rock) and in mineralogy. Pumice consists ofplagioclase (An3059) > orthopyroxene (En5659)> hornblende >> FeTi oxides + rare apatite (inopx) + biotite, set in a rhyolitic matrix (7276 SiO2wt %). 40Ar/39Ar analysis of single biotite crystals yieldedages (0·814·7 Ma), that do not correspondto eruption ages. The biotite represents partially assimilatedxenocrysts, which could have resided in the magma for only ashort period of time. Mineral chemical data, coupled with hydrothermalexperiments, indicate that prior to eruption the dacitic magmastagnated at a depth of 4·56 km below the summitat water pressures of 160210 MPa and a temperature of824 ± 12°C on the basis of FeTi oxide thermometry, and under water-saturated conditions. To stabilize a homogeneousmagma body of >10 km3 at 824°C in the upper crust, wepropose that reheating of the dacitic reservoir by hotter magmabatches was able to maintain the equilibrium between the temperatureof the magma and the assimilation of wall-rock over a periodof 2500 years. Based on similarities among the juvenile products,we suggest that the three eruptions were fed from the same magmabody. Recent basaltic andesite lavas from Merapi volcano contain abundant, complexly zoned, plagioclase phenocrysts, analysed here fortheir petrographic textures, major element composition and Srisotope composition. Anorthite (An) content in individual crystalscan vary by as much as 55 mol% (An40–95) across internalresorption surfaces with a negative correlation between highAn mol% (>70), MgO wt% and FeO wt%. In situ Sr isotope analysesof zoned plagioclase phenocrysts show that the 87Sr/86Sr ratiosof individual zones range from 0·70568 to 0·70627.The upper end of this range is notably more radiogenic thanthe host basaltic andesite whole-rocks (< 0·70574).Crystal zones with the highest An content have the highest 87Sr/86Srvalues, requiring a source or melt with elevated radiogenicSr, rich in Ca and with lower Mg and Fe. Recent Merapi eruptiverocks contain abundant xenoliths, including metamorphosed volcanoclasticsediment and carbonate country rock (calc-silicate skarns) analysedhere for petrographic textures, mineralogy, major element compositionand Sr isotope composition. The xenoliths contain extremelycalcic plagioclase (up to An100) and have whole-rock 87Sr/86Srratios of 0·70584 to 0·70786. The presence ofthese xenoliths and their mineralogy and geochemistry, coupledwith the 87Sr/86Sr ratios observed in different zones of individualphenocrysts, indicate that magma–crust interaction atMerapi is potentially more significant than previously thought,as numerous crystal cores in the phenocrysts appear to be inheritedfrom a metamorphosed sedimentary crustal source. This has potentiallysignificant consequences for geochemical mass-balance calculations, volatile saturation and flux and eruptive behaviour at Merapiand similar island arc volcanic systems elsewhere. Mount Galunggung is a historically active volcano in southwesternJava that has erupted four times in the last two centuries.During the most recent event, which occurred during a 9monthinterval in 1982 83, some 305 106 m3 of mediumK,calcalkaline magma was erupted. This eruption was unusualbecause of its duration, the diversity of eruption dynamicsand products, and the range of lava compositions produced. Thecomposition of juvenile material changed gradually during thecourse of the eruption from initial plagioclase (An6075)and twopyrozene bearing andesites with 58% SiO2 to finalplagioclase (An8590), diopside, and olivine (Fo8590)bearing primitive magnesium basalts with 47% SiO2 Mineralogicaland compositional relationships indicate a magmatic evolutioninvolving differentitation of highMg parental melt. Theeruptive volumes of 35 106 m3 andesite, 120 106 m3 maficandesite, and 150 106 m3 basalt are consistent with the ideathat the 1982 83 eruption progressively tapped and draineda magma chamber that had become chemically stratified throughextensive crystal fractionation. Separates of plagioclase and pyroxene have 18O( SMO W) rangesof + 5. 6 to + 6.0 and + 5.3 to + 5.6, respectively, with 18Oplagpxvalues of + 0.4 to + 0.6o, indicating internal Oisotopeequiliburium at temperature of 1100850 C. The magenesianbasalts have magmatic 18O/ 16O ratios similar to those of midoceanridge basalt, and the Oisotope ratios of compositionallyevolved derivative melts show no evidence for contaminationof the galunggung magmas by 18Orich crust during differentiation.Andesites and transitional mafic and sites have a more variableOisotope character, with laves and phenocrysts havingboth higher and lower 18O values than observed in the parentalmagnesium basalts. These features are interpreted to reflectintramagma chamber processes affecting the upper portions ofthe differentiating Galunggung magma body before the 198283eruption. 相似文献

The Plagioclase-Magma Density Paradox Re-examined and the Crystallization of Proterozoic Anorthosites 总被引:4,自引:1,他引:3
Intermediate-composition plagioclase (An4060) is typicallyless dense than the relatively evolved basaltic magmas fromwhich it crystallizes and the crystallization of plagioclaseproduces a dense residual liquid, thus plagioclase should havea tendency to float in these magmatic systems. There is, however, little direct evidence for plagioclase flotation cumulates eitherin layered intrusions or in Proterozoic anorthosite complexes. The layered series of the Poe Mountain anorthosite, southeastWyoming, contains numerous anorthositeleucogabbro blocksthat constrain density relations during differentiation. Allblocks are more mafic than their hosting anorthositic cumulates, their plagioclase compositions are more calcic, and each blockis in strong Sr isotopic disequilibrium with its host cumulate.Associated structuresdisrupted and deformed layeringindicatethat (1) a floor was present during crystallization and thatplagioclase was accumulating and/or crystallizing on the floor,(2) compositional layering and plagioclase lamination formeddirectly at the magmacrystal pile interface, and (3)the upper portions of the crystal pile contained significantamounts of interstitial melt. Liquid densities are calculatedfor proposed high-Al olivine gabbroic parental magmas and Fe-enrichedferrodioritic and monzodioritic residual magmas of the anorthositestaking into account pressure, oxygen fugacity, P2O5, estimatedvolatile contents, and variable temperatures of crystallization. For all reasonable conditions, calculated block densities aregreater than those of the associated melt. The liquid densities, however, are greater than those for An4060 plagioclase, which cannot have settled to the floor. Plagioclase must eitherhave been carried to the floor in relatively dense packets ofcooled liquid plus crystals or have crystallized in situ. Asloping floor, possibly produced by diapiric ascent of relativelylight plagioclase-rich cumulates, is required to allow for drainingand removal of the dense interstitial liquid produced in thecrystal pile and may be a characteristic feature during thecrystallization of many Proterozoic anorthosites and layeredintrusions. Intraplutonic Quench Zones in the Kap Edvard Holm Layered Gabbro Complex, East Greenland 总被引:1,自引:2,他引:1
The Kap Edvard Holm Layered Gabbro Complex is a large layeredgabbro intrusion (>300 km2) situated on the opposite sideof the Kangerdlugssuaq fjord from the Skaergaard Intrusion. It was emplaced in a continental margin ophiolite setting duringearly Tertiary rifting of the North Atlantic. Gabbroic cumulates, covering a total stratigraphic thicknessof >5 km, have a typical four-phase tholeiitic cumulus mineralogy:plagioclase, clinopyroxene, olivine, and FeTi oxides. The cryptic variation is restricted (plagioclase An8151,olivine Fo8566, clinopyroxene Wo4341 En4637Fs2011) and there are several reversals in mineral chemistry.Crystallization took place in a low-pressure, continuously fractionatingmagma chamber system which was periodically replenished andtapped. Fine-grained (0204 mm) equigranular, thin(053 m), laterally continuous basaltic zones occurwithin an {small tilde}1000 m thick layered sequence in theTaco Point area. Twelve such zones define the bases of individualmacrorhythmic units with an average thickness of {small tilde}80m. The fine-grained basaltic zones grade upwards, over a fewmetres, into medium-grained (>1 mm) poikilitic, olivine gabbrowith smallscale modal layering. Each fine-grained basaltic zoneis interpreted as an intraplutonic quench zone in which magmachilled against the underlying layered gabbros during influxalong the chamber floor. Supercooling by {small tilde}50C isbelieved to have caused nucleation of plagioclase, olivine, and clinopyroxene in the quench zone. The nucleation rate isbelieved to have been enhanced as the result of in situ crystallizationin a continuously flowing magma. The transition to the overlyingpoikilitic olivine gabbro reflects a decreasing degree of supercooling. Compositional variation in the Taco Point sequence is typicalfor an open magma chamber system: olivine (Fo7768 5)and plagioclase cores (An8072) show a zig-zag crypticvariation pattern with no overall systematic trend. Olivinehas the most primitive compositions in the quench zones andmore evolved compositions in the olivine gabbro; plagioclasecores show the opposite trend. Although plagioclase cores arebelieved to retain their original compositions, olivines re-equilibratedby reaction with trapped liquid. Some plagioclase cores containrelatively sodic patches which retain quench compositions. Whole-rock compositions of nine different quench zones varyover a range from 10 to 18% MgO although the mg-number remainsconstant at {small tilde}078. The average composition(477% SiO2, 133%MgO, 157% Na2O+K2O) is takenas a best estimate of the parental magma composition, and isequivalent to a high-magnesian olivine tholeiite. The compositionalvariation of the quench zones is believed to reflect burstsof nucleation and growth of olivine and plagioclase during quenching. Magma emplacement is believed to have taken place by separatetranquil influxes which flowed along the interface between alargely consolidated cumulus pile and the residual magma. Theresident magma was elevated with little or no mixing. At certainlevels in the layered sequence the magma drained back into thefeeder system; such a mechanism is referred to as a surge-typemagma chamber system. 相似文献

Systematic mineralogical and chemical study of the younger Taupovolcanic ash showers, collected from the Terraces Quarry, Taupo, has enabled the showers to be grouped into ten eruptive sequences(numbers refer to the stratigraphical position of the deposits, after Baumgart (1954)): 3; 4; 58; 913; 1415;16; 1718; 1922; 2325; 26. The showers arecomposed of rhyolitic pumice and finer glass fragments; accessoryfragments dominantly of rhyolite, with minor dacite, ignimbrite, and andesite; crystals of plagioclase, hypersthene, and magnetite. The proportions of these components provide a useful guide todistinguishing the showers for correlation purposes. Refractiveindices of the glasses show wide variations, even in one pumicefragment, and increase markedly with increased weathering. Correlationof natural glasses by this method must, therefore, be done withextreme care. Vesiculation of pumice from most of the sequences has been studiedquantitatively by measurements of density and porosity (by modalanalysis). These give a measure of the extent of vesiculation, and in the sequences studied it is shown that there is a progressivedecrease in vesiculation with time in each sequence, here attributedto progressive volatile loss. In the large Taupo (3) and Waimihia(15) deposits, there was a rapid initial rise of intensity ofvesiculation. The last phase of several sequences appears tohave been relatively hotter than the earlier magma, as shownby more calcic plagioclase and more magnesian-rich pyroxenes. As a result of differences in nucleation of the various pumices, three general textures can be recognized: (i) finely cellularwith thick intercellular walls; (ii) finely cellular with thinintercellular walls; (iii) coarsely cellular pumice, usuallywith widely varying vesicle size. Glasses from seven members have been chemically analysed, andshow a close similarity. However, they fall into two distinctgroups, comprising the older showers (19, 24, 25) and the youngershowers (3, 5, 8, 15). The former have higher normative quartz, orthoclase, and anorthite. The compositions are rhyolitic. Plagioclase (An36-An48), hypersthene (Mg48-Mg64), and magnetiteform the characteristic mineralogical assemblage. The plagioclasehas well-developed normal oscillatory zoning, which is believedto be due to movement of crystals within the magma into zonesof varying vapour pressure. Many crystals have sharp discontinuitiesof some zones, which are attributed to sharp drops in vapourpressure, possibly due to eruption of preceding members of thesequence. Three chemical analyses of plagioclase are presented. From vesiculation and chemical results, it is believed thatsequences 3, 58, 1415, and 1718 crystallizedunder a very high vapour pressure, and were probably eruptedas a result of this. Sequences 1922 and 2325 crystallizedunder much lower vapour pressure. From the Ab-Or-Q-H2O diagram,a vapour pressure of 2,0003,000 kg/cm2 is suggested forthe former sequences, equivalent to about 4 miles lithostaticload. Comparison is made between the mineralogy of the Tauporhyolitic glasses and recently published work on some Britishand Icelandic Tertiary rhyolitic glasses. 相似文献

Petrogenesis of Mafic Inclusions in Rhyolitic Lavas from Narugo Volcano, Northeastern Japan 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Mafic inclusions present in the rhyolitic lavas of Narugo volcano,Japan, are vesiculated andesites with diktytaxitic texturesmainly composed of quenched acicular plagioclase, pyroxenes, and interstitial glass. When the mafic magma was incorporatedinto the silica-rich host magma, the cores of pyroxenes andplagioclase began to crystallize (>1000°C) in a boundarylayer between the mafic and felsic magmas. Phenocryst rim compositionsand interstitial glass compositions (average 78 wt % SiO2) inthe mafic inclusions are the same as those of the phenocrystsand groundmass glass in the host rhyolite. This suggests thatthe host felsic melt infiltrated into the incompletely solidifiedmafic inclusion, and that the interstitial melt compositionin the inclusions became close to that of the host melt (c.850°C). Infiltration was enhanced by the vesiculation ofthe mafic magma. Finally, hybridized and density-reduced portionsof the mafic magma floated up from the boundary layer into thehost rhyolite. We conclude that the ascent of mafic magma triggeredthe eruption of the host rhyolitic magma. KEY WORDS: mafic inclusion; stratified magma chamber; magma mixing; mingling; Narugo volcano; Japan 相似文献

Major Addition of Magma at the Pyroxenite Marker in the Western Bushveld Complex, South Africa 总被引:3,自引:3,他引:3
A major, but gradual, reversal in the cryptic variation patternof the plagioclase and pyroxenes, of 13 mol% anorthite and 10mol% Mg/ (Mg + Fe) respectively, is documented in the Main Zoneof the western Bush veld Complex. These changes are accompaniedby a decrease in initial 87Sr/86Sr ratio from > 0.708 to< 0.707. The Pyroxenite Marker, a distinctive orthopyroxenitelayer, occurs close to the top of this reversed differentiationsequence. This is attributed to addition of less differentiatedmagma. On the basis of a mass balance calculation of the initial87Sr/ 86Sr ratios, it is estimated that the volume of magmaadded was comparable to that of the resident magma. Increases in the Fe2O3, TiO2, Al2O3, and Na2O contents of thepyroxenes above the level of magma addition indicate that thenew magma had a lower silica activity and higher fO2 than theresident magma. Quantification of the trace element and REEcontent of the two magmas is hampered by the very low proportionof trapped intercumulus component in these adcumulate rocks. However, semi-quantitative modelling indicates that the traceand REE signatures of the two magmas were similar, with moderateLREE enrichment and flat HREE profiles. The new magma had aslightly higher La/ Sm ratio than the resident magma, consistentwith its more alkaline nature. The new magma was probably added gradually, while 100150m of cumulates formed. It probably intruded at an intermediatelevel within an existing stratified magma chamber, where itcooled and crystallized, and composite packets of liquid pluscrystals plunged to the base of the chamber. The cores of plagioclasegrains formed during this mixing interval show a wider rangeof compositions than in other sections, and plagioclase primocrystsfrom both magmas may be preserved within single samples. Therefore, although intimate physical mixing of packets of unknown sizeof the two magmas occurred, re-equilibration of the major oxidecomposition of the plagioclase primocrysts was not achieved. However, the data and calculations based on diffusion ratesindicate that partial Sr isotopic resetting of plagioclase mayhave occurred. 相似文献

The caldera-forming 26·5 ka Oruanui eruption (Taupo,New Zealand) erupted 530 km3 of magma, >99% rhyolitic, <1%mafic. The rhyolite varies from 71·8 to 76·7 wt% SiO2 and 76 to 112 ppm Rb but is dominantly 7476 wt% SiO2. Average rhyolite compositions at each stratigraphiclevel do not change significantly through the eruption sequence.Oxide geothermometry, phase equilibria and volatile contentsimply magma storage at 830760°C, and 100200MPa. Most rhyolite compositional variations are explicable by28% crystal fractionation involving the phenocryst and accessoryphases (plagioclase, orthopyroxene, hornblende, quartz, magnetite, ilmenite, apatite and zircon). However, scatter in some elementconcentrations and 87Sr/86Sr ratios, and the presence of non-equilibriumcrystal compositions imply that mixing of liquids, phenocrystsand inherited crystals was also important in assembling thecompositional spectrum of rhyolite. Mafic compositions comprisea tholeiitic group (52·363·3 wt % SiO2)formed by fractionation and crustal contamination of a contaminatedtholeiitic basalt, and a calc-alkaline group (56·760·5wt % SiO2) formed by mixing of a primitive olivineplagioclasebasalt with rhyolitic and tholeiitic mafic magmas. Both maficgroups are distinct from other Taupo Volcanic Zone eruptivesof comparable SiO2 content. Development and destruction by eruptionof the Oruanui magma body occurred within 40 kyr and Oruanuicompositions have not been replicated in vigorous younger activity. The Oruanui rhyolite did not form in a single stage of evolutionfrom a more primitive forerunner but by rapid rejuvenation ofa longer-lived polygenetic, multi-age stockpileof silicic plutonic components in the Taupo magmatic system. Volcán Popocatépetl has been the site of voluminousdegassing accompanied by minor eruptive activity from late 1994until the time of writing (August 2002). This contribution presentspetrological investigations of magma erupted in 1997 and 1998,including major-element and volatile (S, Cl, F, and H2O) datafrom glass inclusions and matrix glasses. Magma erupted fromPopocatépetl is a mixture of dacite (65 wt % SiO2, two-pyroxenes+ plagioclase + FeTi oxides + apatite, 3 wt % H2O, P= 1·5 kbar, fO2 = NNO + 0·5 log units) and basalticandesite (53 wt % SiO2, olivine + two-pyroxenes, 3 wt % H2O,P = 14 kbar). Magma mixed at 46 km depth in proportionsbetween 45:55 and 85:15 wt % silicic:mafic magma. The pre-eruptivevolatile content of the basaltic andesite is 1980 ppm S, 1060ppm Cl, 950 ppm F, and 3·3 wt % H2O. The pre-eruptivevolatile content of the dacite is 130 ± 50 ppm S, 880± 70 ppm Cl, 570 ± 100 ppm F, and 2·9 ±0·2 wt % H2O. Degassing from 0·031 km3 of eruptedmagma accounts for only 0·7 wt % of the observed SO2emission. Circulation of magma in the volcanic conduit in thepresence of a modest bubble phase is a possible mechanism toexplain the high rates of degassing and limited magma productionat Popocatépetl. La Pacana is one of the largest known calderas on Earth, andis the source of at least two major ignimbrite eruptions witha combined volume of some 2700 km3. These ignimbrites have stronglycontrasting compositions, raising the question of whether theyare genetically related. The Toconao ignimbrite is crystal poor, and contains rhyolitic (7677 wt % SiO2) tube pumices. The overlying Atana ignimbrite is a homogeneous tuff whose pumiceis dacitic (6670 wt % SiO2), dense (4060% vesicularity)and crystal rich (3040 % crystals). Phase equilibriaindicate that the Atana magma equilibrated at temperatures of770790°C with melt water contents of 3·14·4wt %. The pre-eruptive Toconao magma was cooler (730750°C)and its melt more water rich (6·36·8 wt% H2O). A pressure of 200 MPa is inferred from mineral barometryfor the Atana magma chamber. Isotope compositions are variablebut overlapping for both units (87Sr/86Sri 0·70940·7131;143Nd/144Nd 0·512220·51230) and are consistentwith a dominantly crustal origin. Glass analyses from Atanapumices are similar in composition to those in Toconao tubepumices, demonstrating that the Toconao magma could representa differentiated melt of the Atana magma. Fractional crystallizationmodelling suggests that the Toconao magma can be produced by30% crystallization of the observed Atana mineral phases. Toconaomelt characteristics and intensive parameters are consistentwith a volatile oversaturation-driven eruption. However, thelow H2O content, high viscosity and high crystal content ofthe Atana magma imply an external eruption trigger. Andesites and Dacites from Daisen Volcano, Japan: Partial-to-Total Remelting of an Andesite Magma Body 总被引:3,自引:1,他引:3
Voluminous andesite and dacite lavas of Daisen volcano, SW Japan, contain features suggesting the reverse of normal fractionation(anti-fractionation), in the sense that magma genesis progressedfrom dacite to andesite, accompanied by rises in temperature.A positive correlation exists between phenocryst content (040vol. %) and wt % SiO2 (6167%). Phenocryst-rich dacitescontain hornblende and plagioclase that are generally unaltered, clear, and euhedral. However, phenocryst-poor rocks containsieve-textured plagioclase, resorbed plagioclase, and opacitein which hornblendes are pseudomorphed. Some Daisen rocks containtwo coexisting pyroxenes. Many orthopyroxene phenocrysts fromtwo-pyroxene lavas have high-Ca overgrowth rims (up to 50 µm),a feature consistent with crystallization from a higher-temperaturemagma than the core. Rim compositions are similar from phenocrystto phenocryst in individual samples. Temperatures of 800900°Care obtained from the cores, whereas temperatures of 10001100°Care indicated for the rims. Lavas ranging from aphyric andesite( 相似文献

Plagioclase ultraphyric basalts (PUBs) with up to 54% plagioclasephenocrysts were dredged in the rift valley and adjacent flanksof the ultraslow-spreading Mohns and Knipovich ridges. The PUBsshow large variations in crystal morphologies and zoning. Thelarge variations suggest that single basalt samples containa mixture of plagioclase crystals that aggregated at differentlevels in the magma conduits. Resorbed crystals and repeatedreverse zones suggest that the magma reservoirs were replenishedand heated several times. Thin concentric zones with melt inclusions, and sharp reductions in the anorthite content of 3–7%,are common between the reverse zones. These zones, and skeletalcrystals with distinctly lower anorthite contents than massivecrystals, are interpreted to be the result of rapid crystalliztionduring strong undercooling. The changes between short periodsof cooling and longer periods with reheating are explained bymultiple advances of crystal-rich magma into cool regions followedby longer periods of gradual magma inflow and temperature increase. The porphyritic basalts are characterizd by more depleted andmore fractionated compositions than the aphyric basalts, withlower (La/Sm)N, K2O and Mg-numbers. This relationship, and theobservation that PUBs are sampled only close to segment centresalong these ridges, suggests that the PUBs formed by higherdegrees of melting and evolved in more long-lived magma reservoirs. We propose that the zoning patterns of plagioclase crystalsand crystal morphologies of these PUBs reflect the developmentand flow of magma through a stacked sill complex-like conduitsystem, whereas the aphyric equivalents represent later flowof magma through the conduit. The formation of voluminous higher-degreemelts may trigger the development of the magma conduits andexplain the generally depleted compositions of PUB magmas. Vico volcano has erupted potassic and ultrapotassic magmas, ranging from silica-saturated to silica-undersaturated types,in three distinct volcanic periods over the past 0·5Myr. During Period I magma compositions changed from latiteto trachyte and rhyolite, with minor phono-tephrite; duringPeriods II and III the erupted magmas were primarly phono-tephriteto tephri-phonolite and phonolite; however, magmatic episodesinvolving leucite-free eruptives with latitic, trachytic andolivine latitic compositions also occurred. In Period II, leucite-bearingmagmas (87Sr/86Srinitial = 0·710370·71115)were derived from a primitive tephrite parental magma. Modellingof phonolites with different modal plagioclase and Sr contentsindicates that low-Sr phonolitic lavas differentiated from tephri-phonoliteby fractional crystallization of 7% olivine + 27% clinopyroxene+ 54% plagioclase + 10% FeTi oxides + 4% apatite at lowpressure, whereas high-Sr phonolitic lavas were generated byfractional crystallization at higher pressure. More differentiatedphonolites were generated from the parental magma of the high-Srphonolitic tephra by fractional crystallization of 1029%clinopyroxene + 1215% plagioclase + 4467% sanidine+ 24% phlogopite + 13% apatite + 710% FeTioxides. In contrast, leucite-bearing rocks of Period III (87Sr/86Srinitial= 0·708120·70948) were derived from a potassictrachybasalt by assimilationfractional crystallizationwith 2040% of solid removed and r = 0·40·5(where r is assimilation rate/crystallization rate) at differentpressures. Silica-saturated magmas of Period II (87Sr/86Srinitial= 0·710440·71052) appear to have been generatedfrom an olivine latite similar to some of the youngest eruptedproducts. A primitive tephrite, a potassic trachybasalt andan olivine latite are inferred to be the parental magmas atVico. These magmas were generated by partial melting of a veinedlithospheric mantle sources with different veinperidotite/wall-rockproportions, amount of residual apatite and distinct isolationtimes for the veins. High-magnesian andesite occurs at Hachimantai, northern Honshu,Japan. Disequilibrium zoning features indicate that the phenocrystminerals were derived from three different magmas. Chemicalcompositions and zoning profiles are accounted for by two-stagemagma mixing: the first mixing occurred between a crystal-freebasalt magma and a more differentiated olivine basalt magma;the second stage occurred by mixing between the resultant ofthe first-stage mixing and a hyperstheneaugite andesitemagma. Mass balance of phenocryst crystals shows that end-membercompositions were c. 52·0 wt % SiO2 and 10·1 wt% MgO for the mafic end-member and 57·0 wt % SiO2 forthe felsic end-member of the second-stage mixing. Phenocrystminerals of the first-stage mixing end-member indicate the similarityof the end-member composition to that of basalts from nearbyvolcanoes. The counterpart aphyric magma in the first-stagemixing was more magnesian than the estimated mafic end-member.Calculations of the phase equilibria of similar basalts fromnearby volcanoes and comparison of results with previous phaseequilibrium experiments showed that the olivine basalt end-memberof the first stage was hydrous and situated at a depth wherethe pressure was less than 2 kbar. Two-pyroxene thermometryestimates are about 1050°C for the pyroxenes derived fromthe felsic end-member of the second-stage mixing, and about1180°C for groundmass pyroxenes. Crystallization temperaturesof 11701230°C are estimated for minerals from themafic end-member of the second-stage mixing based on phase equilibriumcalculations. These similar temperature estimates between thegroundmass and the mafic end-member imply achievement of thermalequilibrium between end-members preceding crystallization. Themagma plumbing system of the eastern Hachimantai is illustratedby a recent volcanic event, involving lateral dike intrusiontoward a pressure source. The encounter of a laterally migratingbasalt dike and an andesite magma chamber triggered the magmamixing that produced the high-magnesian andesite. The modelcan account for the relation between the petrological modeland surface distribution of volcanic rocks. The infrequencyof such mixing-derived high-magnesian andesite stems from therarity of high-magnesian basalt as a potential mixing end-memberin northern Honshu. The processes operating in the development of chemical zonationin silicic magma chambers have been addressed with a SrNdPbHfThisotope study of the chemically zoned trachyte pumice depositof the Fogo A eruption, Fogo volcano, Azores. Sr isotopic variationis observed in whole rocks, glass separates and sanidine phenocrysts(whole-rock 87Sr/86Sr: 0·70490·7061; glass87Sr/86Sr: 0·70480·7052; sanidine 87Sr/86Sr:0·70480·7062). Thorium isotopic variationis observed in glass separates, with (230Th/232Th)o rangingfrom 0·8737 to 0·8841, and exhibiting a negativecorrelation with Sr isotopes. The Nd, Pb and Hf isotopic compositionsof the whole-rock trachytic pumices are invariant and indistinguishablefrom basalts flanking the volcano. The Sr isotope variationsin the whole rocks are proposed to be the result of three distinctprocesses: contamination of the Fogo A magma by assimilationof radiogenic seawater-altered syenite wall rock, to explainthe Sr and Th isotopic compositions of the glass separates;incorporation of xenocrysts into the trachytic magma, requiredto explain the range in feldspar Sr isotopic compositions; andpost-eruptive surface alteration. This study emphasizes theimportance of determining the isotopic composition of glassand mineral separates rather than whole rocks when pre-eruptivemagmatic processes are being investigated.
