The laterally persistent but thin, Jurassic age (Bathonian-Callovian) Brentskardhaugen bed is poorly sorted (often with mud to cobble size), and is crudely normally and/or reversely graded without internal discontinuities. These traits may indicate a short-lived depositional event, and are inconsistent with an origin as a basal, transgressive gravel lag formed in a terrestrial or shoreline setting. Mega-storm events on a shallow marine shelf with an underlying condensed section may account for the poor sorting, grading, stratigraphic position and remanie character of the bed.  相似文献

A structural map of Oscar II Land compiled using black and white, stereo-pair air photos and other available information sources suggests the existence of three structural zones within the deformed platform cover strata. The western zone consists of basement involved overthrusts of complex geometry in the north large-scale folds of platform cover strata with a stepped, down to the east profile in the south. The central zone consists primarily of folds within Kapp Starostin Fm. and overlying Triassic strata that likely formed above a subhorizontal décollement within Gipshuken Fm. strata. Farther to the east thrusts emplace Permian Kapp Starostin Fm. strata over Triassic strata. This zone probably represents stratigraphic climb of the basal decollement. Conservative estimates of shortening for the central and eastern zones are in the 15-25% range. The contribution of the western zone structures to overall Tertiary shortening depends on the geometry of faults underlying the stepped folds and is uncertain at present.
Changes along strike are in part due to differential levels of erosion and changes in transport direction, but also probably important was variable thickness of the platform cover strata involved (less to the north) and the availability of incompetent horizons along which thrust-fiats could form. Two areas with anomalous structural trends may represent oblique ramps.  相似文献

The origin of potassic lavas with within-plate characteristicsin island are settings is unclear. The volcanic complex of Ringgit—Beser, situated in eastern Java, has erupted lavas of both normal islandare calc-alkaline type and atypical potassic lavas, includingsome highly magnesian lavas. The occurrence of these primitivelavas gives an unusual insight into the source characteristicsof the potassic lavas. The lavas from Ringgit—Beser have a wide range of K2O(1.1–6.4 wt. %) and MgO contents (18.0–1.6 wt.%).The most magnesian lavas have high Ni and Cr contents. The calc-alkalinelavas have incompatible trace element patterns typical of islandare lavas with enrichments in large ion lithophile elements(LILE) and light rare earth elements (LREE) relative to highfield strength elements (HFSE) and heavy REE (HREE). The potassiclavas may be divided into two series on the basis of Ba andNb contents, with the enriched potassic (EK) series having higherBa and Nb contents for a given MgO content than the potassic(K) series. The EK and K series lavas have some incompatibletrace element ratios similar to within-plate lavas (e.g., highCe/Pb, low LILE/HFSE ratios, and low B/Be). However, both theEK series and K series lavas have negative Ti and Zr anomalies, and the EK series lavas have high Ba/La similar to are lavas. There is little distinction in Sr and Nd isotopes between theK and EK series, but the calc-alkaline lavas have lower 87Sr/86Srand higher 143Nd/144Nd ratios than the potassic lavas. The EKseries lavas have lower 206Pb/204Pb and higher 208Pb/204Pb thanthe K series lavas, but similar 207Pb/204Pb ratios. The K serieslavas define an almost horizontal trend in 207Pb–206Pbspace. The Pb isotopic ratios indicate that the EK series lavasare derived from a single mantle source, whereas the K seriesoriginate from a mixture of two mantle components. Calc-alkalinelavas have Pb isotope ratios similar to other calc-alkalineand tholeiitic lavas from Java, and plot on a mixing line betweenIndian Ocean mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) and Indian Oceansediment. Incompatible trace element and Pb isotope data for the calc-alkalinelavas indicate that these lavas have a similar source to othercalc-alkaline lavas erupted in Java, namely melts of the IndianOcean MORB mantle fluxed by fluids from the subducted slab. The potassic lavas originate from enriched mantle sources withinthe wedge which have not been affected by recent subductionprocesses. The EK series lavas are derived from a metasomatizedzone which has EMI-type characteristics. The K series lavasare derived from mixing of melts from Christmas Island-type(EMII) mantle and the metasomatized zone. The metasomatizedzone is probably situated at the base of the lithosphere andthe Indian Ocean MORB and Christmas Island-type mantle componentsare situated in the asthenosphere of the wedge. Isotopic datafor Ringgit—Beser lavas confirm that the mantle wedgeof the Sunda arc is extremely heterogeneous (Foden & Varne,1980; Varne, 1985; Wheller et al., 1987). The similarity in geochemistry between Indonesian potassic lavasand those erupted in continental settings indicates that themagma source is essentially the same, namely a metasomatizedphlogopite-rich layer generated by melts of recycled subductedlithosphere. The lack of negative Ti anomalies in the continentalpotassic lavas is ascribed to lower oxidation states in themantle in continental settings.  相似文献

Augustine Volcano, a Quaternary volcanic centre of the easternAleutian Arc, produces predominantly andesites and dacites oflow- to medium-K calc-alkaline composition. Mineralogical andmajor element characteristics of representative lavas suggestthat magmatic evolution has been influenced by both crystalfractionation and magma-mixing processes. However, incompatibletrace element variations (e.g. K/Rb) indicate that these evolvedlavas have been contaminated by the mafic arc crust of the underlyingTalkeetna accreted terrane. The limited range of isotope compositionsalso supports the assimilation of non-radiogenic mafic crust(e.g. 87Sr/86Sr = 0.7032–0.7034; 143Nd/144 Nd = 0.51301–0.5130).In addition, Pb-isotope compositions parallel the North Pacificmean oceanic trend (206Pb/204 Pb = 18.3–18.8; 207Pb/204Pb= 15.5–15.6; 208Pb/204Pb = 38.2–38.3) and do notrequire a subducted sediment component in the source. Relativelyhigh (Ba/La) N (0.79–18.10) and B/Be (14.5) ratios do,however, suggest a metasomatic fluid component derived fromthe dehydration of the subducting plate. The thickened continental crust (35 km) of the eastern AleutianArc prevents the ascent of basaltic melts, which fractionateand assimilate at various depths to produce andesitic magmas. These andesites evolve towards more silicic compositions byfractional crystallization. The absence of evidence for a largehigh-level crustal magma chamber implies that the magmatic systembeneath the volcano is young and at an immature stage of evolution. Transpressive plate motions during the opening of the Norwegian-Greenland Sea were in some manner responsible for the development of Spitsbergen's Tertiary fold-and-thrust belt. A flower model has been proposed for the large-scale structural architecture of Tertiary deformation (Lowell 1972). An alternate model of decoupling, where convergent and transcurrent motions were accommodated in totally or partially separated, subparallel belts is suggested.  相似文献

The Bonin archipelago represents an uplifted fore-arc terrainwhich exposes the products of Eocene supra-subduction zone magmatism.Chichijima, at the centre of the chain, represents the typelocality for the high-Mg andesitic lava termed boninite. Therange of extrusives which constitute the boninite series volcanicsare present on Chichijima, and are disposed in the sequenceboninite-andesite-dacite with increasing height in the volcano-stratigraphy.Progression to evolved compositions within the Chichijima boniniteseries is controlled by crystal fractionation from a boniniteparental magma containing 15% MgO. Olivine and clinoenstatiteare the initial liquidus phases, but extraction of enstatiticorthopyroxene, followed by clinopyroxene and plagioclase, isresponsible for the general evolution from boninite, throughandesite, to dacite. Some andesites within the overlying MikazukiyamaFormation are petrographically distinct from the main boniniteseries in containing magnetite phenocrysts and a high proportionof plagioclase. As such, these andesites have affinities withthe calc-alkaline series. Major and trace element data for 74 boninitic series rocks fromChichijima are presented. Although major element variation isdominantly controlled by high-level crystal fractionation, thelarge variations in incompatiable trace element concentrationsat high MgO compositions cannot be explained by this mechanism.Nd, Pb, and Sr isotopic data indicate the following: (1) a strongoverprint on 87Sr/86Sr by seawater alteration; (2) Pb isotopeslie above the northern hemisphere reference line (NHRL) andare thus similar to the <30-Ma are and basin lavas of theIzu—Bonin system, and (3) Nd(40 Ma) ranges between 2.8and 6.8 within the boninite series volcanics. Differences inrare-earth elements (REE), Zr, Ti, and 143Nd/144Nd at similardegrees of fractionation can be explained by the addition ofa component of fixed composition from the down-going oceaniccrustal slab to a variably depleted source region within theoverlying wedge. Data presented for Sm/Zr and Ti/Zr indicatethat boninite series volcanics are characterized by low valuesfor both of these ratios. In particular, boninites appear tohave uniquely low Sm/Zr ratios. These characteristics may bethe result of slab melting in the presence of residual amphibole;the resultant melt could combine with typical slab dehydrationfluids and infiltrate the overlying mantle wedge. Such a fluid—meltcomponent could mix either with shallow mantle or directly withprimitive melts from depleted mantle. Trace elements, REE, andisotope data thus point to a model for boninite genesis whichrequires tightly constrained pressure—temperature conditionsin the slab combined with melting of a variably depleted sourcein the overlying wedge. Such constraints are rarely met exceptduring the subduction of juvenile oceanic crust beneath a young, hot overriding plate.  相似文献

Air photo interpretation along with limited field work is the basis of a compilation map of Tertiary structures in the Upper Paleozoic through Mesozoic platform cover strata of Nordenskiold Land. Permian Kapp Starostin Formation strata form a continuous marker horizon delineating both a large NE-verging fold complex, which involves the basement (Hecla Hoek sequence) through basal Tertiary strata, and somewhat smaller scale folds, some of which may have formed in association with detachments and thrusts within the platform cover sequence. The map pattern is both a function of local structural plunge and changes in fold geometry along strike. Regional considerations suggest that subsurface basement-involved thrusts exist. In S Nordenskiold Land, to the E of folded Kapp Starostin Formation strata, a 3.5 km wide zone of folding and thrusting in Triassic and Jurassic strata above a subhorizontal decollement is inferred to occur. Further E is the W limb of the central Tertiary basin syncline.  相似文献

An oxygen and hydrogen isotopic study of minerals and wholerocks from the granites of the Mourne Mountains Tertiary complex, and related rocks, shows that whereas a significant circulationof meteoric water was associated with the complex, it had onlyminor and localized effects on the granites themselves. TheSilurian slate and greywacke country rocks, which would havehad 18O(SMOW) values of +10 to +20 before the Tertiary igneousevents, have been depicted 18O to values of –40 to –05Tertiary acid minor intrusions outside the main granite massesare also 18O depleted. l8O whole-rock data on the granites showa range of +6.0 to +9.5, and include values significantly higherthan most of those obtained for the granites of the Tertiarycentral complexes of Skye, Mull, and Ardnamurchan. Many of thelowest whole-rock 18O values are found in samples where theminerals are not in isotopic equilibrium. The mineral oxygenisotopic data can be explained in terms of localized interactionwith meteoric water, resulting in preferential 18O depletionin feldspar(s) and biotite, with quartz being much less affected. The granites all show low values of D(SMOW) for biotite andamphibole separates (–137 to –104). The lowest valuesoccur close to the margins of the plutons, near internal contactsor near greisen localities, and these probably reflect limitedinteraction with meteoric water. The higher D values are fromsamples which show evidence of chloritization. This processappears to have occurred both during interaction with meteoricwater, and also during autometasomatism by an exsolved magmaticfluid in other parts of the plutons, including central locationswhere there is little or no evidence for the penetration ofmeteoric water. Granite samples which exhibit near-equilibriumoxygen isotope fractionations for constituent minerals are characterizedby magmatic O-isotopic compositions. The G2 granite, the largestpluton of the eastern centre, has a magmatic 18O(SMOW) valueof {small tilde}+95; intrusions G3 (eastern centre) and G4(western centre) both have 18O(SMOW) values of {small tilde}+90.The other two main intrusive phases have distinctly lower 18O(SMOW)values: {small tilde}+75 for Gl (the least fractionated graniteof the Mourne Mountains central complex), and from +75 to +85for G5. The oxygen isotopic data rule out simple partial meltingof the country rocks as the origin of the granites and alsopreclude an origin by closed-system fractional crystallizationof basaltic magma typical of that represented by Tertiary basicigneous rocks of the region. * Present address: NERC Isotope Geosciences Laboratory, Keyworth, Nottingham BG12 5GG, UK Present address: School of Engineering Technology, Georgian College, Barrie, Ontario, L4M 3X9, Canada  相似文献

Mount Galunggung is a historically active volcano in southwesternJava that has erupted four times in the last two centuries.During the most recent event, which occurred during a 9–monthinterval in 1982– 83, some 305 106 m3 of medium–K,calc–alkaline magma was erupted. This eruption was unusualbecause of its duration, the diversity of eruption dynamicsand products, and the range of lava compositions produced. Thecomposition of juvenile material changed gradually during thecourse of the eruption from initial plagioclase (An60–75)and two–pyrozene bearing andesites with 58% SiO2 to finalplagioclase (An85–90), diopside, and olivine (Fo85–90)bearing primitive magnesium basalts with 47% SiO2 Mineralogicaland compositional relationships indicate a magmatic evolutioninvolving differentitation of high–Mg parental melt. Theeruptive volumes of 35 106 m3 andesite, 120 106 m3 maficandesite, and 150 106 m3 basalt are consistent with the ideathat the 1982– 83 eruption progressively tapped and draineda magma chamber that had become chemically stratified throughextensive crystal fractionation. Separates of plagioclase and pyroxene have 18O( SMO W) rangesof + 5. 6 to + 6.0 and + 5.3 to + 5.6, respectively, with 18Oplag–pxvalues of + 0.4 to + 0.6o, indicating internal O–isotopeequiliburium at temperature of 1100–850 C. The magenesianbasalts have magmatic 18O/ 16O ratios similar to those of mid–oceanridge basalt, and the O–isotope ratios of compositionallyevolved derivative melts show no evidence for contaminationof the galunggung magmas by 18O–rich crust during differentiation.Andesites and transitional mafic and sites have a more variableO–isotope character, with laves and phenocrysts havingboth higher and lower 18O values than observed in the parentalmagnesium basalts. These features are interpreted to reflectintramagma chamber processes affecting the upper portions ofthe differentiating Galunggung magma body before the 1982–83eruption.  相似文献
