Calc-alkaline olivine andesite and two-pyroxene dacite of theTaos Plateau volcanic field evolved in an open magmatic system.mg-numbers of spatially and temporally associated ServilletaBasalt (54–61) and ohvine andesite (49–59) are comparableand preclude fractional crystallization of ferromagnesian mineralsas the major differentiation process. If Servilleta olivinetholeiite is assumed to be the parental magma type, enrichmentsof highly incompatible trace elements (up to 17 ?) oVer concentrationsin the basalts require that andesitic and dacitic magmas containa substantial proportion of assimilated crust. Isotopic compositionsof andesite and dacite, which have slightly higher 87Sr/86Srratios than the basalts but lower 143Nd/144Nd, 206Pb/204Pb,207Pb/204Pb, and 208Pb/204Pb ratios, are consistent with contaminationof parental basalt by old, low Rb/Sr, low U/Pb, and low Th/Pbcontinental crust. Concentrations of highly incompatible traceelements in andesite and dacite lavas are decoupled from majorelement compositions; the highest concentrat ions of these elementsoccur in andesitic, rather than dacitic compositions, and andesitelavas are more variable in trace element contents. Assimilationof heterogeneous crust concurrent with fractional crystallizationof varying mineral assemblages could cause this decoupled behavior.High mg-numbers in andesite and dacite, skeletal olivine phenocrysts, and reversely zoned pyroxene phenocrysts are manifestationsof mafic replenishment and magma mixing in the Taos Plateaumagmatic system. Taos Plateau volcanoes are monolithologic and are distributedin a semi-concentric zoned pattern that is a reflection of thecomplex subvolcanic magmatic system. A central focus of basaltshields developed above the main basaltic conduit system; thesemagmas contain 10–35% admixed andesitic and dacitic magma.Basalt shields are surrounded by a partial ring of olivine andesiteshield volcanoes, where replenishment of basaltic magma providedthe heat necessary for prolonged assimilation of crust, resultingin intermediate-composition lavas. Dacite shields are locatedaround the periphery of the more mafic volcanoes and reflecta decrease in mafic input on the fringes of the magmatic system.  相似文献

A Complex Petrogenesis for an Arc Magmatic Suite, St Kitts, Lesser Antilles   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
St Kitts forms one of the northern group of volcanic islandsin the Lesser Antilles arc. Eruptive products from the Mt Liamuigacentre are predominantly olivine + hypersthene-normative, low-Kbasalts through basaltic andesites to quartz-normative, low-Kandesites. Higher-Al and lower-Al groups can be distinguishedin the suite. Mineral assemblages include olivine, clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, plagioclase and titanomagnetite with rarer amphibole, ilmenite and apatite. Eruptive temperatures of the andesitesare estimated as 963–950°C at fO2 NNO + 1 (whereNNO is the nickel–nickel oxide buffer). Field and mineralchemical data provide evidence for magma mixing. Glass (melt)inclusions in the phenocrysts range in composition from andesiteto high-silica rhyolite. Compositional variations are broadlyconsistent with the evolution of more evolved magmas by crystalfractionation of basaltic parental magmas. The absence of anycovariation between 87Sr/86Sr or 143Nd/144Nd and SiO2 rulesout assimilation of older silicic crust. However, positive correlationsbetween Ba/La, La/Sm and 208Pb/204Pb and between 208Pb/204Pband SiO2 are consistent with assimilation of small amounts (<10%)of biogenic sediments. Trace element and Sr–Nd–Pbisotope data suggest derivation from a normal mid-ocean ridgebasalt (N-MORB)-type mantle source metasomatized by subductedsediment or sediment melt and fluid. The eruptive rocks arecharacterized by 238U excesses that indicate that fluid additionof U occurred <350 kyr ago; U–Th isotope data for mineralseparates are dominated by melt inclusions but would allow crystallizationages of 13–68 ka. However, plagioclase is consistentlydisplaced above these ‘isochrons’, with apparentages of 39–236 ka, and plagioclase crystal size distributionsare concave-upwards. These observations suggest that mixingprocesses are important. The presence of 226Ra excesses in twosamples indicates some fluid addition <8 kyr ago and thatthe magma residence times must also have been less than 8 kyr. This paper presents field, geochemical and isotopic (Sr, Nd,Pb) results on basalts from the Antipodes, Campbell and ChathamIslands, New Zealand. New 40Ar/39Ar age determinations alongwith previous K–Ar dates reveal three major episodes ofvolcanic activity on Chatham Island (85–82, 41–35,5 Ma). Chatham and Antipodes samples comprise basanite, alkaliand transitional basalts that have HIMU-like isotopic (206Pb/204Pb>20·3–20·8, 87Sr/86Sr <0·7033,143Nd/144Nd >0·5128) and trace element affinities(Ce/Pb 28–36, Nb/U 34–66, Ba/Nb 4–7). Thegeochemistry of transitional to Q-normative samples from CampbellIsland is explained by interaction with continental crust. Thevolcanism is part of a long-lived (100 Myr), low-volume, diffusealkaline magmatic province that includes deposits on the Northand South Islands of New Zealand as well as portions of WestAntarctica and SE Australia. All of these continental areaswere juxtaposed on the eastern margin of Gondwanaland at >83Ma. A ubiquitous feature of mafic alkaline rocks from this regionis their depletion in K and Pb relative to other highly incompatibleelements when normalized to primitive mantle values. The inversionof trace element data indicates enriched mantle sources thatcontain variable proportions of hydrous minerals. We proposethat the mantle sources represent continental lithosphere thathost amphibole/phlogopite-rich veins formed by plume- and/orsubduction-related metasomatism between 500 and 100 Ma. Thestrong HIMU signature (206Pb/204Pb >20·5) is consideredto be an in-grown feature generated by partial dehydration andloss of hydrophile elements (Pb, Rb, K) relative to more magmaphileelements (Th, U, Sr) during short-term storage at the base ofthe lithosphere. Pliocene volcanics on the island of Bequia comprise two interbeddedsuites of basalts and andesites. The isotopically homogeneoussuite (IHS) has a limited range of Sr—Nd—Pb isotopes(87Sr/86Sr 0.7040–0.7046, 143 Nd/144 Nd 0.5130 and 206Pb/204Pb 19.36–19.51), and mantle-like 18O values (5.5in clinopyroxene). The isotopically diverse suite (IDS) is characterizedby much wider ranges of radiogenic isotopes (87 Sr/86Sr 0.7048–0.7077,143 Nd/144 Nd 0.5128–0.5123 and 206 Pb/204 Pb 19.7–20.2),in which all of the Sr and Pb ratios are higher and Nd ratiosare lower than those of the IHS. The IDS is also characterizedby high 18 O values, up to 7.6 in clinopyroxene. The Sr andPb isotope ratios are too high, and the Nd isotope ratios aretoo low in the IDS for any of these lavas to be derived fromunmodified depleted mantle. Both suites are petrologically very similar and their majorelement compositions and phenocryst contents suggest that theywere formed largely by fractional crystallization of a hydroustholeiitic melt at pressures <3 kbar. The isotopic ratiosand enrichments in large ion lithophile elements (LILE), andto some extent light rare earth elements (LREE), as comparedwith mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB), of the IHS lavas suggestthat they were derived from a depleted mantle source which hadbeen re-enriched by the addition of 1–4% of a subductioncomponent. This component probably comprised a mixture of dehydrationfluids, and perhaps minor siliceous melts, released from subductingsediments and mafic crust. The extreme isotopic ranges, largeenrichments in incompatible elements, more fractionated LREEpatterns and higher 18 O values of the IDS lavas are interpretedas resulting from 10–55% assimilation—fractionalcrystallization of sediments, derived from the Guyana Shield, which are present in the arc crust, by IHS type melts. Elemental, isotopic, and mineral compositions as well as rocktextures were examined in samples from Popocatépetl volcanoand immediately surrounding monogenetic scoria cones of theSierra Chichinautzin Volcanic Field, central Mexico. Magma generationis strongly linked to the active subduction regime to the south.Rocks range in composition from basalt to dacite, but Popocatépetlsamples are generally more evolved and have mineral compositionsand textures consistent with more complicated, multi-stage evolutionaryprocesses. High-Mg calc-alkaline and more alkaline primitivemagmas are present in the monogenetic cones. Systematic variationsin major and trace element compositions within the monogeneticsuite can mostly be explained by polybaric fractional crystallizationprocesses in small and short-lived magmatic systems. In contrast,Popocatépetl stratovolcano has produced homogeneous magmacompositions from a shallow, long-lived magma chamber that isperiodically replenished by primitive basaltic magmas. The currenteruption (1994–present) has produced silicic dome lavasand pumice clasts that display mingling of an evolved daciticcomponent with an olivine-bearing mafic component. The longevityof the magma chamber hosted in Cretaceous limestones has fosteredinteraction with these rocks as evidenced by the chemical andisotopic compositions of the different eruptive products, contact-metamorphosedxenoliths, and fumarolic gases. Popocatépetl volcanicproducts display a considerable range of 87Sr/86Sr (0·70397–0·70463)and Nd (+6·2 to +3·0) whereas Pb isotope ratiosare relatively homogeneous (206Pb/204Pb 18·61–18·70;207Pb/204Pb 15·56–15·60). The magmas of the Tertiary volcanic province of S. Queenslandare chemically bimodal, and occur in numerous volcanic centres,at least three representing original shield volcanoes. The maficlavas are dominantly hawaiites and tholeiitic andesites, whereasthe silicic magmas comprise mainly trachytes, rhyolites, andcomendites. The silicic rocks exhibit variable trace element abundance patterns. There is a progressive depletion of Sr, Ba, V, Mg, Ni, Cr, Mn,and P, through the trachytes to the rhyolites and comenditeswhile the behaviour of Zr, Nb, LREE, Y and Zn is very variable.Rb, Th, and to a lesser extent Pb exhibit a more regular behaviour, becoming most generally concentrated in the comendites and rhyolites. These trace element patterns are modelled by application ofthe Rayleigh distillation model, using partition coefficientsbased on analysed phenocrysts from the S. Queensland siliciclavas. Trace mineral phases, namely zircon, chevkinite, andallanite, are shown to be important in the probable controlof LREE, Zr, and Th abundances, while Nb and Zn are probablycontrolled during fractionation by magnetite. Trace elementdata for the hawaiites and tholeiitic andesites also indicateextensive although variable levels of fractional crystallizationof these magmas. The Sr and O isotopic compositions of the mafic lavas, trachytes, comendites and rhyolites are as follows: initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios;0.70357–0.70456, 0.70432–0.70589, 0.70495–0.70917,and 0.70708–0.70863 respectively. 18O range between 5.6–7.0(mafic lavas), 4.9–8.7 (trachytes), 5.0–7.6 (comendites)and 8.1–10.4 per mil (rhyolites). Pb isotopic compositionsare variable, showing a variation of 6.7 per cent for 206Pb/204Pbratios through the range of volcanic compositions. The rhyolitesexhibit a much greater divergence in their O, Sr, and Pb isotopiccompositions compared with those of associated mafic lavas, than is found in the trachytes and comendites. Within the silicicvolcanics, positive correlations exist between 18O and initialSr ratios, and between Pb isotopic compositions and initialSr ratios (with one group of trachytes providing a noteworthyexception). These correlations are not so clearly defined forthe mafic lavas, although these do exhibit positive correlationsbetween differentiation index, 18O, and initial Sr isotope ratios. The development of the silicic magmas, excepting two groups,is interpreted in terms of a model in which assimilation andfractional crystallization occur concurrently, involving a basaltor hawaiite magma component and a crustal component (modelledon the analysed Carboniferous basement greywackes outeroppingin the region); the data indicate, however, that differentiationcontinued in isotopically closed systems (i. e. isolated fromthe wallrocks). The highly depleted Sr and Ba abundances ofthe rhyolites and comendites suggest that contamination didnot occur after differentiation had ceased. The rhyolites havethe highest isotopic input of the crustal components and areinterpreted as crustal anatectic melts, produced locally withinthe crust in response to basalt/hawaiite magma intrusion, whereasmost of the trachytes and comendites are interpreted as primarilythe differentiated products from original mafic parental magmas, with variable assimilation of crustal wallrock components. Theisotopic data suggest that only the Minerva Hills trachyticlavas, and a Glass House comendite, have not been significantlymodified by wallrock assimilation processes. The erpted maficmagmas were also evidently modified by isotopic crustal wallrockinteractions, which independent petrological data suggest hasoccurred at intermediate to lower crustal depths.  相似文献

Ages and initial isotopic ratios of Early Cretaceous ({smalltilde}100 Ma) plutons of the Cordilleran Interior in the southernTurtle and West Riverside mountains distinguish them from LateCretaceous plutons in surrounding ranges in the eastern MojaveDesert. Furthermore, the studied plutons have isotopic and geochemicalcharacteristics more similar to plutons of Cretaceous age inthe coastal batholiths (Peninsular Ranges and Sierra Nevada)than to most Mesozoic plutons in the Cordilleran Interior. Thestudied plutons are calcic, in contrast to the mostly cak-alkalineMesozoic plutons of the eastern Mojave Desert. Distinctive isotopicsignatures of the granitoids include lower initial 87Sr/86Srof 0•705–0•710, 18O of +6•3 to +7•7,208Pb/204Pb of 38•3–39•5, and higher Nd of –3•86to –9•60 than the Late Cretaceous plutons in theregion. The distinctive characteristics of these Early Cretaceousplutons are probably both location and time specific and resultfrom: (1) emplacement in a cold, untapped ‘Mojave-type’Proterozoic upper crust, (2) a significant component of basalticmagmas partially melted from the asthenosphere or subcontinentallithosphere and (3) a magmatic component derived from Proterozoic, mafic, lower crust. They interacted less with their crustalhosts than did the later, more voluminous Late Cretaceous plutons. KEY WORDS: Cordilleran Interior; Cretaceous; Mojave; pscudothron; Turtle Mountains  相似文献

Mechanisms of fractional crystallization with simultaneous crustalassimilation (AFC) are examined for the Kutsugata and Tanetomilavas, an alkali basalt–dacite suite erupted sequentiallyfrom Rishiri Volcano, northern Japan. The major element variationswithin the suite can be explained by boundary layer fractionation;that is, mixing of a magma in the main part of the magma bodywith a fractionated interstitial melt transported from the mushyboundary layer at the floor. Systematic variations in SiO2 correlatewith variations in the Pb, Sr and Nd isotopic compositions ofthe lavas. The geochemical variations of the lavas are explainedby a constant and relatively low ratio of assimilated mass tocrystallized mass (‘r value’). In the magma chamberin which the Kutsugata and Tanetomi magmas evolved, a strongthermal gradient was present and it is suggested that the marginalpart of the reservoir was completely solidified. The assimilantwas transported by crack flow from the partially fused floorcrust to the partially crystallized floor mush zone throughfractures in the solidified margin, formed mainly by thermalstresses resulting from cooling of the solidified margin andheating of the crust. The crustal melt was then mixed with thefractionated interstitial melt in the mushy zone, and the mixedmelt was further transported by compositional convection tothe main magma, causing its geochemical evolution to be characteristicof AFC. The volume flux of the assimilant from the crust tothe magma chamber is suggested to have decreased progressivelywith time (proportional to t–1/2), and was about 3 x 10–2m/year at t = 10 years and 1 x 10–2 m/year at t = 100years. It has been commonly considered that the heat balancebetween magmas and the surrounding crust controls the couplingof assimilation and fractional crystallization processes (i.e.absolute value of r). However, it is inferred from this studythat the ratio of assimilated mass to crystallized mass canbe controlled by the transport process of the assimilant fromthe crust to magma chambers. Within the Zitácuaro–Valle de Bravo (ZVB) regionof the central Mexican Volcanic Belt (MVB), three lava serieshave erupted during the Quaternary: (1) high-K2O basaltic andesitesand andesites; (2) medium-K2O basaltic andesites, andesitesand dacites; (3) high-TiO2 basalts and basaltic andesites. Thedominant feature of the first two groups is the lack of plagioclaseaccompanying the various ferromagnesian phenocrysts (olivine, orthopyroxene, augite, and hornblende) in all but the dacites. This absence of plagioclase in the phenocryst assemblages ofthe high-K2O and medium-K2O intermediate lavas is significantbecause it indicates high water contents during the stage ofphenocryst equilibration. In contrast, the high-TiO2 group ischaracterized by phenocrysts of plagioclase and olivine. Thespatial distribution of these three lava series is systematic. The southern section of the ZVB transect, 280–330 km fromthe Middle America Trench (MAT), is characterized by high-K2Omelts that are relatively enriched in fluid-mobile elementsand have the highest 87Sr/86Sr ratios. Medium-K2O basaltic andesiteand andesite lavas are present throughout the transect, butthose closest to the MAT are MgO-rich (3·5–9·4wt %) and have phenocryst assemblages indicative of high magmaticwater contents (3·5–6·5 wt % water) andrelatively low temperatures (950–1000°C). In markedcontrast, the northern section of the ZVB transect (380–480km from the MAT) has high-TiO2, high field strength element(HFSE)-enriched magmas that have comparatively dry (< 1·5wt % magmatic water) and hot (1100–1200°C) phenocrystequilibration conditions. The central section of the ZVB transect(330–380 km from the MAT) is a transition zone and producesmoderately light rare earth element (LREE) and large ion lithophileelement (LILE)-enriched, medium-K2O lavas with phenocryst assemblagesindicative of intermediate (1·5–3·5 wt %)water contents and temperatures. The high-K2O series compositionsare the most enriched in LILE and LREE, with a narrow rangeof radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr from 0·704245 to 0·704507,143Nd/144Nd values ranging from 0·512857 to 0·512927(Nd = 4·27–5·63), and 208Pb/204Pb valuesfrom 38·248 to 38·442, 207Pb/204Pb values from15·563 to 15·585, and 206Pb/204Pb values from18·598 to 18·688. The medium-K2O series compositionsare only moderately enriched in the LILE and LREE, with a broaderrange of 87Sr/86Sr, but similar 143Nd/144Nd and 208Pb/204Pbvalues to those of the high-K2O series. In contrast, the high-TiO2series compositions have little enrichment in LILE or LREE andinstead are enriched in the HFSE and heavy rare earth elements(HREE). The high-TiO2 lavas are isotopically distinct in theirlower and narrower range of 143Nd/144Nd. The isotopic variationsare believed to reflect the upper mantle magma source regionsas the low content of phenocrysts in most lavas precludes significantupper crustal assimilation or magma mixing, other than thatrepresented by the presence of quartz xenocrysts (< 2 vol.%) with rhyolitic glass inclusions, which are found in manyof these lavas. The systematic spatial variation in compositionof the three lava series is a reflection of the underlying subduction-modifiedmantle and its evolution. Miocene to Pleistocene calc-alkaline volcanism in the East Carpathianarc of Romania was related to the subduction of a small oceanbasin beneath the continental Tisza–Dacia microlate. Volcanicproducts are predominantly andesitic to dadtic in composition, with rare basalts and rhyodacites (51–l71% SiO2; mg-number0.65–0.26) and have medium- to high-K calcalkaline andshoshonitic affinities. Mg, Cr and Ni are low in all rock-types,indicating the absence of primary erupted compositions. Detailedtrace element and Sr, Nd, Pb and 0 isotope data suggest thatmagmas were strongly crustally contaminated. Assimilation andfractional crystallization (AFC) calculations predict the consumptionof 5–35% local upper-crustal metasediments or sedimentsfrom the palaeo-accretionary wedge. Variations in the isotopiccomposition of the contaminants and parental magmas caused variationsin the mixing trajectories in different parts of the arc Themost primitive isotopic compositions are found in low-K dacitesof the northern Cdlimani volcanic centre and are interpretedas largely mantle derived. A second possible mantle reservoirof lower 149 Nd/144 Nd and lower 206 Pb/204 Pb is identifiedfrom back-arc basic calc-alkaline rocks in the south of thearc Both magmatic reservoirs have elevated isotopic characteristics, owing either to source bulk mixing (between depleted or enrichedasthenosphere and <1% average subducted local sediment) orlower-crustal contamination. Palaeocene (c. 55–58 Ma) adakitic andesites from the Yanjiarea, NE China, are typically clinopyroxene-bearing sodic andesitescontaining 60· 9–62· 2% SiO2 and 4·02–4· 36% MgO, with high Mg-number [100 Mg/(Mg+ Fe) atomic ratio] from 65· 5 to 70· 1. Whole-rockgeochemical features include high Cr (128–161 ppm) andNi (86–117 ppm) concentrations, extremely high Sr (2013–2282ppm), low Y (10–11 ppm) and heavy rare earth elements(HREE; e.g. Yb = 0· 79–1· 01 ppm), and mid-oceanridge basalt (MORB)-like Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic compositions[e.g. 87Sr/ 86Sr(i) = 0· 70298–0· 70316,Nd(t) = +3· 8 to +6· 3 and 206Pb/ 204Pb = 17·98 – 18· 06], analogous to high-Mg adakites occurringin modern subduction zones. However, mineralogical evidencefrom clinopyroxene phenocrysts and microcrystalline plagioclaseclearly points to magma mixing during magma evolution. Iron-richclinopyroxene (augite) cores with low Sr, high Y and heavy REEcontents, slightly fractionated REE patterns and large negativeEu anomalies probably crystallized along with low-Ca plagioclasefrom a lower crustal felsic magma. In contrast, high Mg-numberclinopyroxene (diopside and endiopside) mantles and rims havehigher Sr and lower HREE and Y concentrations, highly fractionatedREE patterns (high La/Yb) and negligible Eu anomalies, similarto those found in adakites from subduction zones. The Yanjiadakitic andesites can be interpreted as a mixture between acrust-derived magma having low Mg-number and Sr, and high Yand HREE, and a mantle-derived high Mg-number adakite havinghigh Sr and low Y and HREE concentrations. During storage and/orascent, the mixed magma experienced further crustal contaminationto capture zircons, of a range of ages, from the wall rocks. The absence of coeval arc magmatism and an extensional tectonicregime in the Yanji area and surrounding regions suggest thatthese Palaeocene adakitic andesites were formed during post-subductionextension that followed the late Cretaceous Izanagi–Farallonridge subduction. Generation of these adakitic andesites doesnot require contemporaneous subduction of a young, hot oceanicridge or delamination of eclogitic lower crust as suggestedby previous models. The Miocene–Quaternary Jemez Mountains volcanic field(JMVF), the site of the Valles caldera, lies at the intersectionof the Jemez lineament, a Proterozoic suture, and the CenozoicRio Grande rift. Parental magmas are of two types: K-depletedsilica-undersaturated, derived from the partial melting of lithosphericmantle with residual amphibole, and tholeiitic, derived fromeither asthenospheric or lithospheric mantle. Variability insilica-undersaturated basalts reflects contributions of meltsderived from lherzolitic and pyroxenitic mantle, representingheterogeneous lithosphere associated with the suture. The Kdepletion is inherited by fractionated, crustally contaminatedderivatives (hawaiites and mugearites), leading to distinctiveincompatible trace element signatures, with Th/(Nb,Ta) and La/(Nb,Ta)greater than, but K/(Nb,Ta) similar to, Bulk Silicate Earth. These compositions dominate the mafic and intermediate lavas, and the JMVF is therefore derived largely, and perhaps entirely, from melting of fertile continental Jemez lineament lithosphereduring rift-related extension. Significant variations in Pband Nd isotope ratios (206Pb/204Pb = 17·20–18·93;143Nd/144Nd = 0·51244–0·51272) result fromcrustal contamination, whereas 87Sr/86Sr is low and relativelyuniform (0·7040–0·7048). We compare theeffects of contamination by low-87Sr/86Sr crust with assimilationof high-87Sr/86Sr granitoid by partial melting, with Sr retainedin a feldspathic residue. Both models satisfactorily reproducethe isotopic features of the rocks, but the lack of a measurableEu anomaly in most JMVF mafic lavas is difficult to reconcilewith a major role for residual plagioclase during petrogenesis. Miocene to Recent volcanism in northwestern Arabia producedthe largest intraplate volcanic field on the Arabian plate (HarratAsh Shaam, Jordan). The chemically and isotopically diversevolcanic field comprises mafic alkali basalts and basanites. The magmas underwent limited fractional crystallization of ol± cpx ± plag and rare samples have assimilatedup to 20% of Late Proterozoic crust en route to the surface. However, there are subtle Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic variations(87Sr/86Sr = 0·70305–0·70377, 143Nd/144Nd= 0·51297–0·51285, 206Pb/204Pb = 18·8–19·2),which exhibit marked correlations with major elements, incompatibletrace element ratios and abundances in relatively primitivebasalts (MgO >8·5 wt %), and cannot be explained byfractional crystallization and crustal contamination alone.Instead, the data require polybaric melting of heterogeneoussources. Semi-quantitative melt modelling suggests that thisheterogeneity is the result of small degree melts (2–5%)from spinel- and garnet-facies mantle, inferred to be shallowArabian lithosphere, that mixed with smaller degree melts (<1%)from a predominantly deep garnet-bearing asthenospheric(?) sourcewith ocean island basalt characteristics. The latter may bea ubiquitous part of the asthenosphere but is preferentiallytapped at small degrees of partial melting. Volcanism in Jordanappears to be the result of melting lithospheric mantle in responseto lithospheric extension. With time, thinning of the lithosphereallowed progressively deeper mantle (asthenosphere?) to be activatedand melts from this to mix with the shallower lithospheric mantlemelts. Although Jordanian intraplate volcanism is isotopicallysimilar to examples of Late Cenozoic volcanism throughout theArabian peninsula (Israel, Saudi Arabia), subtle chemical andisotopic differences between Yemen and Jordan intraplate volcanismsuggest that the Afar plume has not been channelled northwestwardsbeneath the Arabian plate and played no role in producing thenorthern Saudi Arabian and Jordan intraplate volcanic fields. Puyehue Volcano (40?5?S) in the southern volcanic zone (33?–46?)of the Andes is a largely basaltic stratovolcano constructedon a highly eroded, dominantly andesitic volcanic center. Duringgrowth of Puyehue Volcano there was a trend from basaltic tomore siliceous lavas, and the most recent eruptions (1921–22,1960) are Cordon Caulle rhyodacites and rhyolites erupted fromfissures northwest of the volcano. These basaltic through rhyoliticlavas define a medium-K2O suite of tholeiitic affinity withtrace element and Pb-isotopic signatures typical of volcanicrocks associated with subduction zones. Most of the evolved lavas, ranging from andesite to rhyolite, formed by low to moderate pressure ( 5 kb) fractional crystallizationof a plagioclase-dominated anhydrous assemblage. Magma mixingproduced aphyric basaltic andesites with anomalously high incompatibleelement contents and latestage andesites with disequilibriumphenocryst assemblages. The age progression from abundant basaltto younger, less voluminous, more silicic lavas reflects increasinglygreater degrees of fractional crystallization which caused theapparent compositional gap between mixing end members to widen. There is no evidence in the silicic lavas for assimilation ofgeochemically distinctive continental crust. Puyehue basaltsare surprisingly more heterogeneous in 87Sr/86Sr (0?70378–0?70416)and incompatible element abundance ratios (e.g., La/Sm, Ba/Nb)than the more evolved lavas. This geochemical variability mayreflect subcrustal source heterogeneities or contamination bylower crust. The older basaltic andesites and andesites underlyingthe Puyehue edifice have Sr and Nd isotopic ratios and incompatibleelement abundance ratios within the range of Puyehue basalts.Apparently, similar sources and processes were involved in theirgenesis.  相似文献

We present the results of a comprehensive major element, traceelement and Sr–Nd–Pb–O isotopic study of post-glacialvolcanic rocks from the Neovolcanic zones on Iceland. The rocksstudied range in composition from picrites and tholeiites, whichdominate in the main rift systems, to transitional and alkalicbasalts confined to the off-rift and propagating rift systems. There are good correlations of rock types with geochemical enrichmentparameters, such as La/Sm and La/Yb ratios, and with long-termradiogenic tracers, such as Sr–Nd–Pb isotope ratios, indicating a long-lived enrichment/depletion history of thesource region. 87Sr/86Sr vs 143Nd/144Nd defines a negative array.Pb isotopes define well-correlated positive arrays on both 206Pb/204Pbvs 207Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb diagrams, indicating mixing ofat least two major components: an enriched component representedby the alkali basalts and a depleted component represented bythe picrites. In combined Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic spacethe individual rift systems define coherent mixing arrays withslightly different compositions. The enriched component hasradiogenic Pb (206Pb/204Pb > 19·3) and very similargeochemistry to HIMU-type ocean island basalts (OIB). We ascribethis endmember to recycling of hydrothermally altered upperbasaltic oceanic crust. The depleted component that is sampledby the picrites has unradiogenic Pb (206Pb/204Pb < 17·8),but geochemical signatures distinct from that of normal mid-oceanridge basalt (N-MORB). Highly depleted tholeiites and picriteshave positive anomalies in mantle-normalized trace element diagramsfor Ba, Sr, and Eu (and in some cases also for K, Ti and P),negative anomalies for Hf and Zr, and low 18Oolivine values(4·6–5·0) below the normal mantle range. All of these features are internally correlated, and we, therefore, interpret them to reflect source characteristics and attributethem to recycled lower gabbroic oceanic crust. Regional compositionaldifferences exist for the depleted component. In SW Icelandit has distinctly higher Nb/U (68) and more radiogenic 206Pb/204Pbratios (18·28–18·88) compared with the NErift (Nb/U 47; 206Pb/204Pb = 18·07–18·47).These geochemical differences suggest that different packagesof recycled oceanic lithosphere exist beneath each rift. A thirdand minor component with relatively high 87Sr/86Sr and 207Pb/204Pbis found in a single volcano in SE Iceland (Öræfajökullvolcano), indicating the involvement of recycled sediments inthe source locally. The three plume components form an integralpart of ancient recycled oceanic lithosphere. The slope in theuranogenic Pb diagram indicates a recycling age of about 1·5Ga with time-integrated Th/U ratios of 3·01. Surprisingly, there is little evidence for the involvement of North AtlanticN-MORB source mantle, as would be expected from the interactionof the Iceland plume and the surrounding asthenosphere in formof plume–ridge interaction. The preferential samplingof the enriched and depleted components in the off-rift andmain rift systems, respectively, can be explained by differencesin the geometry of the melting regions. In the off-rift areas, melting columns are truncated deeper and thus are shorter, whichleads to preferential melting of the enriched component, asthis starts melting deeper than the depleted component. In contrast, melting proceeds to shallower depths beneath the main rifts. The longer melting columns also produce significant amountsof melt from the more refractory (lower crustal/lithospheric)component. The Benue Trough is a continental rift related to the openingof the equatorial domain of the South Atlantic which was initiatedin Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous times. Highly diversifiedand volumetrically restricted Mesozoic to Cenozoic magmaticproducts are scattered throughout the rift. Three periods ofmagmatic activity have been recognized on the basis of 40 Ar-39Ar ages: 147–106 Ma, 97–81 Ma and 68–49 Ma.Trace element and Sr, Nd and Pb isotope determinations, performedon selected basaltic samples, allow two groups of basaltic rocksto be identified: (1) a group with a tholeiitic affinity, withZr/Nb=7–11.1; La/Nb = 0.77–1; 87Sr/86Sr; =0.7042–0.7065143Nd/144Nd;i = 0.5125–0.5127; 206Pb/204Pbi = 17.59–18.48;(2) a group with an alkaline affinity, with Zr/Nb = 3.6–6.8;La/Nb=0.53–0.66; 87Sr/86 Sri=0.7029–0.7037; 143Nd/144Ndi=0.5126–0.5129;206Pb/204Pbi = 18.54–20.42. The geochemical data leadto the conclusion that three types of mantle sources were involvedin the genesis of the Mesozoic to Cenozoic basaltic rocks ofthe Benue, without significant crustal contamination: (1) anenriched subcontinental lithospheric mantle from which the tholeiiticbasalts were derived; (2) a HIMU-type (plume) component fromwhich the alkaline basalticrocks originated; (3) a depletedasthenospheric mantle (N-MORB-type source), which was involvedin the genesis of the alkaline basaltic magmas. According to(1) the postulated location of the St Helena hot spot in theEquatorial Atlantic at about 130 Ma and (2) the isotopic compositionof the alkaline basaltic rocks of the Benue Trough and theirgeochemical similarity with the basalts of St Helena, we concludethat the St Helena plume was involved in the genesis of thealkaline magmatism of the Benue at the time of opening of theEquatorial Atlantic. Moreover, the geochemical similarity betweenthe alkaline magmatism of the Benue Trough and that of the CameroonLine suggests that both magmatic provinces were related to theSt Helena plume. Finally, the temporal change of the mantlesources observed in the Benue Trough can be accounted for bythe recent models of plume dynamics, in the general frameworkof opening of the Equatorial Atlantic. Petrogenetic models for the origin of lamproites are evaluatedusing new major element, trace element, and Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopedata for Holocene lamproites from the Gaussberg volcano in theEast Antarctic Shield. Gaussberg lamproites exhibit very unusualPb isotope compositions (206Pb/204Pb = 17·44–17·55and 207Pb/204Pb = 15·56–15·63), which incommon Pb isotope space plot above mantle evolution lines andto the left of the meteorite isochron. Combined with very unradiogenicNd, such compositions are shown to be inconsistent with an originby melting of sub-continental lithospheric mantle. Instead,a model is proposed in which late Archaean continent-derivedsediment is subducted as K-hollandite and other ultra-high-pressurephases and sequestered in the Transition Zone (or lower mantle)where it is effectively isolated for 2–3 Gyr. The high207Pb/204Pb ratio is thus inherited from ancient continent-derivedsediment, and the relatively low 206Pb/204Pb ratio is the resultof a single stage of U/Pb fractionation by subduction-relatedU loss during slab dehydration. Sr and Nd isotope ratios, andtrace element characteristics (e.g. Nb/Ta ratios) are consistentwith sediment subduction and dehydration-related fractionation.Similar models that use variable time of isolation of subductedsediment can be derived for all lamproites. Our interpretationof lamproite sources has important implications for ocean islandbasalt petrogenesis as well as the preservation of geochemicallyanomalous reservoirs in the mantle. We report Sr-, Nd- and Pb-isotopic compositions for the lavasof Mauritius, the second youngest volcanic island in the Réunionhotspot. The lavas of the Older Series (7·8–5·5Ma) have identical isotopic compositions (87Sr/86Sr = 0·70411to 0·70422,143Nd/144Nd = 0·512865 to 0·512854,and 206Pb/204Pb = 19·016 to 19·041) to those ofRéunion, where the center of volcanic activity is currentlylocated. The lavas of the Intermediate Series (3·5–1·9Ma) and Younger Series (0·70–0·17 Ma) areshifted to lower Sr-isotopic compositions (0·70364–0·70394,with 143Nd/144Nd = 0·512813 to 0·512948 and 206Pb/204Pb= 18·794 to 18·984). The Intermediate Series lavashave similar trace-element characteristics (e.g. Zr–Nb,Ba–Y) to those of Rodrigues, in both cases requiring theinvolvement of an enriched mantle-like component in the mantlesource. During the volcanic history of Mauritius, the magmaslost the principal isotopic characteristics of the Réunionhotspot with time, and became gradually imprinted with the isotopicsignature of a shallower mantle source that produced the CentralIndian Ridge basalts. Tertiary volcanic rocks from the Westerwald region range frombasanites and alkali basalts to trachytes, whereas lavas fromthe margin of the Vogelsberg volcanic field consist of morealkaline basanites and alkali basalts. Heavy rare earth elementfractionation indicates that the primitive Westerwald magmasprobably represent melts of garnet peridotite. The Vogelsbergmelts formed in the spinel–garnet peridotite transitionregion with residual amphibole for some magmas suggesting meltingof relatively cold mantle. Assimilation of lower-crustal rocksand fractional crystallization altered the composition of lavasfrom the Westerwald and Vogelsberg region significantly. Thecontaminating lower crust beneath the Rhenish Massif has a differentisotopic composition from the lower continental crust beneaththe Hessian Depression and Vogelsberg, implying a compositionalboundary between the two crustal domains. The mantle sourceof the lavas from the Rhenish Massif has higher 206Pb/204Pband 87Sr/86Sr than the mantle source beneath the Vogelsbergand Hessian Depression. The 30–20 Ma volcanism of theWesterwald apparently had the same mantle source as the QuaternaryEifel lavas, suggesting that the magmas probably formed in apulsing mantle plume with a maximum excess temperature of 100°Cbeneath the Rhenish Massif. The relatively shallow melting ofamphibole-bearing peridotite beneath the Vogelsberg and HessianDepression may indicate an origin from a metasomatized portionof the thermal boundary layer. A hybrid pyroxene-bearing Weinsberg type granitoid of the SouthBohemian batholith (Austria) consists of two independent mineralassemblages that were formed during two different magmatic events. The older, inherited assemblage forms unevenly distributed millimetre-sizedmulti-grain patches of quartz + mesoperthitic alkali feldspar+ andesine/bytownite + clinopyroxene (XMg = 0·50–0·54)+ orthopyroxene (XMg = 0·35–0·42) ±ilmenite ± accessories. It is interpreted to representremnants of a mangeritic igneous rock with a superimposed granulite-faciesre-equilibration texture characterized by unzoned pyroxenesand plagioclase. The enclosing younger assemblage with alkalifeldspar + oligoclase/andesine + quartz + biotite ± accessoriescrystallized from a biotite-bearing granitic melt with feldsparsexhibiting typical magmatic zoning. Coexisting with the inheritedassemblage are zircons with a characteristic typology (S23 toD, mean J4). Zircons belonging to the granitic assemblage, onthe other hand, show a distinctly different typology (L2 toS5, mean L4) or are anhedral. A Cambrian age of formation andsubsequent re-equilibration of the inherited assemblage is inferredfrom a mean U/Pb and 207Pb/206Pb evaporation age of 523 ±5 Ma for the J4 zircons. Granitic L4 zircons show a mean 207Pb/206Pbevaporation age of 355 ± 9 Ma, interpreted as the ageof zircon growth during a Carboniferous partial melting eventin the lower crust. Granite emplacement at 345 ± 5 Mais inferred from U/Pb analysis of the anhedral zircon population. The comparably low radiogenic common Pb isotope compositionof megacrystic alkali feldspars suggests that at least somedomains of these crystals are inherited from the older, pyroxene-bearingmineral assemblage. Rb/Sr whole-rock dating is thus severelyjeopardized by the presence of the inherited alkali feldsparcrystals, leading to widely scattering data points and errorchronages of no geological significance.
