The Tian Shan range formed in the late Cenozoic in response to the northward propagation of deformation related to the India–Eurasia continental collision. Precise timing of the Tian Shan uplift is required to understand possible mechanisms of continental lithosphere deformation and interactions between climate, tectonism and erosion. Here, we provide magnetostratigraphic age control on the northern Chinese Tian Shan foreland successions. A thorough rock magnetic analysis identifies haematite‐ and magnetite‐bearing alluvial fan deposits in the upper portion of the sampled strata as more reliable palaeomagnetic recorders than magnetite‐bearing fluvial and lacustrine deposits that are often maghaemitized in the lower part of the record. As a result, a robust correlation to the geomagnetic polarity time scale is obtained from 6 to 2 Ma while a tentative correlation is proposed from 6 to 16 Ma. Sediment accumulation rates increase from 155 to 260 m Myr?1 at 3.9±0.3 Ma. This change coincides with a gradual lithologic transition from fluvial (sandstone‐dominated) to alluvial fan (conglomerate‐dominated) deposits that likely records an approaching erosional source related to tectonically increased subsidence rather than differential compaction. Clear evidence for growth strata starting at an estimated age of ~2 Ma provides a minimum age for folding. These results are compared with previous magneotstratigraphic studies from the same and other sections of the northern Tian Shan foreland basin fill, thus enabling a critical assessment of the reliability of magnetostratigraphic dating and the significance of sediment accumulation rate variations with respect to facies variations and growth strata. Our results in the Taxi He section provide a sequence of events that is consistent with enhanced tectonic forcing starting at ~4 Ma, although a climatic contribution must be considered given the close relationship of these ages with the Pliocene climate deterioration.  相似文献

Summary. In 1972–78, the late N. D. Watkins and others carried out ajoint field programme of geological mapping in the Mio-Pliocene flood basalts of Iceland, including sampling for K-Ar dating and palaeomagnetic research. The major part of the palaeomagnetic sampling is represented by 2462 lavas in five long composite sections through the lava pile. This paper deals with various statistical properties of this data set.
It is concluded that geomagnetic reversals occur more frequently than is assumed in the current ocean-floor polarity time-scale. There is no evidence for significant asymmetries between normal and reverse polarity states of the field, neither as regards chron lengths, secular variation, or virtual dipole moment magnitude. Intensities of remanence in these lavas are shown to be well approximated in terms of a hyperbolic distribution. The latitude distribution of virtual magnetic poles can be fitted with a Bingham function having k' ∼ 4.5, and low-latitude poles do not occur preferentially in any particular longitude interval.  相似文献

Summary. An exact equation is derived for the magnetic field lines of the general axisymmetric magnetic multipole of arbitrary degree ( n ). This new result has important applications in studies of the possible nature of solarterrestrial physics during geomagnetic polarity reversals. In the limiting case of a magnetic dipole ( n=1 ), the equation for the magnetic field lines of the general axisymmetric magnetic multipole simplifies correctly to the well-known dipolar form, which is used extensively in geomagnetism, magnetospheric physics and cosmic-ray physics as a first-order approximation to the actual configuration of the geomagnetic field.
It is also shown theoretically that suites of similar magnetic field lines of the general axisymmetric multipole attain their maximum radial distances from the origin on a set of circular conical surfaces, with coincident vertices at the centre of the Earth; this set includes the equatorial plane if the degree ( n ) of the multipole is odd. The magnetic field is horizontal everywhere on all these surfaces.
Palaeomagnetic studies have suggested that during some polarity reversals the magnetic field in the inner magnetosphere can be represented approximately either by a single, non-dipolar, low-degree (2 < n < 4), axisymmetric magnetic multipole or by a linear combination of such multipoles. In this situation, the equation for the field lines of an axisymmetric magnetic multipole of low degree (2 < n < 4) would be as fundamental to a proper understanding of magnetospheric, ionospheric and cosmic-ray physics during polarity reversals as is the equation for dipolar field lines in the case of the contemporary geomagnetic field.  相似文献

Rock varnish is a manganiferous dark coating ubiquitous in desert landscapes. To test the validity of varnish microstratigraphy as a chronometric indicator, varnish samples were collected from radiometrically dated and undated late Quaternary lava flows in Amboy, Cima, and Pisgah volcanic fields (AVF, CVF, PVF) in the Mojave Desert of California, western United States. Varnish microstratigraphies show a replicable layering sequence that appears to record regional climate changes that likely correspond in time to the Younger Dryas and Heinrich events in the North Atlantic region. Microstratigraphic patterns on these volcanic fields match patterns found in varnishes from other western US sites with available radiometric age constraints. Based on this regional chronology, varnishes from the A flow, H flow, and a stone pavement surface in the Cima volcanic field were estimated to be 16.5–24, 74–85, and 74–85 ka, respectively; these ages are consistent with previously published cosmogenic 3He ages of 18–20, 72–74, and 80–85 ka for these geomorphic surfaces. Varnishes from the I flow at Cima yielded a puzzling age estimate of 39 ka, which is consistent with an older 3He age of 37±6 ka reported for the I flow, but inconsistent with a younger 3He age of 31±7 ka and a cosmogenic 36Cl age of 27±1.3 ka for the same flow. Reinterpretation of the original varnish age data, with knowledge of then available field mapping results of the I flow, suggests that the I cone is polycyclic and different flow units were probably unintentionally sampled in the field. The revised varnish ages of 30 and 39 ka for the I flow thus may be in good agreement with their corresponding 3He and 36Cl ages. In a blind test of the method, varnishes from the Phase 1 flow at Pisgah, an unnamed flow (called here the I′ flow) at Cima, and the Amboy flow were estimated to be 24–30, 46–60, and 74–85 ka, respectively; these ages agree well with 36Cl ages of 22.5±1.3, 46±2, and 79±5 ka reported for the same flows by Phillips [Geomorphology (2002).]. These test results provide convincing evidence that varnish microstratigraphy, once radiometrically calibrated, can be used as a valid dating tool to estimate surface exposure ages of desert landforms in the western US drylands.  相似文献

We present a neural network approach to invert surface wave data for a global model of crustal thickness with corresponding uncertainties. We model the a posteriori probability distribution of Moho depth as a mixture of Gaussians and let the various parameters of the mixture model be given by the outputs of a conventional neural network. We show how such a network can be trained on a set of random samples to give a continuous approximation to the inverse relation in a compact and computationally efficient form. The trained networks are applied to real data consisting of fundamental mode Love and Rayleigh phase and group velocity maps. For each inversion, performed on a 2°× 2° grid globally, we obtain the a posteriori probability distribution of Moho depth. From this distribution any desired statistic such as mean and variance can be computed. The obtained results are compared with current knowledge of crustal structure. Generally our results are in good agreement with other crustal models. However in certain regions such as central Africa and the backarc of the Rocky Mountains we observe a thinner crust than the other models propose. We also see evidence for thickening of oceanic crust with increasing age. In applications, characterized by repeated inversion of similar data, the neural network approach proves to be very efficient. In particular, the speed of the individual inversions and the possibility of modelling the whole a posteriori probability distribution of the model parameters make neural networks a promising tool in seismic tomography.  相似文献

As a traditional method for palaeoseismic studies, trenching can be combined with dating techniques to identify palaeoseismic events and the earthquake recurrence interval. However, when using trenches to study palaeoearthquakes, factors such as the active tectonic background of the earthquake‐caused structure, the lithology on both sides of the fault, the geomorphology location and type and the samples and methods for dating will affect the location of the trench. Thus, trenches should be carefully selected and used to identify the impact of ancient earthquakes. The results have substantial uncertainties and limitations. In recent years, scholars have made considerable progress in using other methods to reveal the palaeoseismic information of faults. Moreover, the history of fault activity may have been recorded in the lacustrine sediment adjacent to the fault. Hasuhai Lake is adjacent to the middle segment of the Daqingshan piedmont fault in Inner Mongolia. Since the Holocene, the region has experienced a temperate continental semi‐arid climate with little interference, and Hasuhai Lake and peripheral waters present weak hydrodynamic conditions that provide an ideal location for the study of palaeoseismic records in lacustrine sediments. Sediment samples and samples for dating were collected from three trenches excavated on the periphery of the Hasuhai Lake. Their variations in grain size and magnetic susceptibility revealed that wind and flowing water jointly produced the sedimentary conditions of Hasuhai sediments. The 14C dating results and variations in the grain size distribution, grain size components and magnetic susceptibility of sediments caused by seismic events obtained in this study were compared with those caused by a series of palaeoseismic events at the middle segment of the Daqingshan piedmont fault reported by previous studies using trenches, knickpoints and palaeosol records. The results identified seven palaeoseismic events recorded near Hasuhai Lake since 12,000 years. The combined use of lacustrine sediment variation characteristics and dating techniques is an effective method for studying palaeoseismic events.  相似文献

Summary. In this paper we present palaeomagnetic data from 87 hand samples collected in a sequence of tuffs and shales (Surf Formation) of Llanvirnian age, exposed in north-western Argentina (27° 47' S, 68° 06' W). After cleaning, the majority of samples showed reversed polarity and yielded a palaeomagnetic pole at 5.9° E, 8.5° S (α95= 5.9°). They also showed reversals of declination and inclination at the top of the sequence, which we have associated with geomagnetic excursions. Whole rock K—Ar age de-terminations suggest an age older than 416 ± 25 Myr for the Suri rocks. The predominant reversed stable remanence of these rocks is consistent with the reversed polarity reported for Early Llanvirnian rocks from USSR. The palaeomagnetic pole for the Suri Formation is consistent with the interpretation that Gondwana was a single unit in Early Palaeozoic times.
Palaeomagnetic data from 27 hand samples collected from 10 igneous units of Late Silurian—Early Devonian age (Ñuñorco Formation), exposed in the same area, are also given. The majority of the igneous units showed reversed polarity after cleaning. The positions of VGP's for the Ñuñorco igneous units are scattered and they are not used for geodynamic interpretations. Whole rock K—Ar age determinations suggest ages of 416 ± 25 and 360 ± 10 Myr for two igneous units of the Ñuñorco Formation.  相似文献

The New River crosses three physiogeologic provinces of the ancient, tectonically quiescent Appalachian orogen and is ideally situated to record variability in fluvial erosion rates over the late Cenozoic. Active erosion features on resistant bedrock that floors the river at prominent knickpoints demonstrate that the river is currently incising toward base level. However, thick sequences of alluvial fill and fluvial terraces cut into this fill record an incision history for the river that includes several periods of stalled downcutting and aggradation. We used cosmogenic 10Be exposure dating, aided by mapping and sedimentological examination of terrace deposits, to constrain the timing of events in this history. 10Be concentration depth profiles were used to help account for variables such as cosmogenic inheritance and terrace bioturbation. Fill-cut and strath terraces at elevations 10, 20, and 50 m above the modern river yield model cosmogenic exposure ages of 130, 600, and 600–950 ka, respectively, but uncertainties on these ages are not well constrained. These results provide the first direct constraint on the history of alluvial aggradation and incision events recorded by New River terrace deposits. The exposure ages yield a long-term average incision rate of 43 m/my, which is comparable to rates measured elsewhere in the Appalachians. During specific intervals over the last 1 Ma, however, the New River's incision rate reached 100 m/my. Modern erosion rates on bedrock at a prominent knickpoint are between 28 and 87 m/my, in good agreement with rates calculated between terrace abandonment events and significantly faster than 2 m/my rates of surface erosion from ancient terrace remnants. Fluctuations between aggradation and rapid incision operate on timescales of 104− 105 year, similar to those of late Cenozoic climate variations, though uncertainties in model ages preclude direct correlation of these fluctuations to specific climate change events. These second-order fluctuations appear within a longer-term signal of dominant aggradation (until 2 Ma) followed by dominant incision. A similar signal is observed on other Appalachian rivers and may be the result of sediment supply fluctuations driven by the increased frequency of climate changes in the late Cenozoic.  相似文献

The vegetation on debris flow deposits is examined at seven sites in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Plant cover, colonizing tree ages, species' presence and abundance, and new stem ages on buried willows are vegetation parameters evaluated for the purpose of dating debris flows. The results indicate that general trends of vegetation development on debris flow deposits can be used to date recent events, at least relatively. The use of several methods to corroborate estimations of deposit age is usually necessary. An optimal approach is to combine absolute and relative dating techniques in evaluating debris flow occurrence, extent, and potential hazard.  相似文献

Summary. The Breggia gorge (Ticino, Switzerland) provides a continuous outcrop of Mesozoic limestones covering the time between the Lower Jurassic and Upper Cretaceous. The Jurassic section from the Lower Pliens-bachian to Aalenian is well dated by ammonites. The limestones of these stages are a good quality recorder of the polarity of the geomagnetic field during this time interval. More than 500 cores have been drilled along a 120 m thick section with a median distance between cores of about 20 cm. Detailed thermal and af demagnetization and further rock magnetic studies were used to determine the characteristic NRM direction for each sample. Initial NRM intensities and low field susceptibilities reflect variations in oxidation potential and sedimentation rate during carbonate deposition. The Breggia section covers an estimated 12Myr of Lower to Middle Jurassic time during which more than 60 distinct reversals of the geomagnetic field are recorded. This corresponds to a comparatively high mean reversal frequency of about 5 reversals Myr−1. The Breggia polarity zonation can be correlated with the nearby section at Alpe Turati (Como, Italy) and comparable polarity patterns are recognized in other biostratigraphically well-dated magnetostratigraphic profiles from Hungary and Umbria (Italy).  相似文献

The correlation between reversed polarity in rocks and strong oxidation of magnetic minerals is briefly re-examined, with especial reference to a well-documented Columbia Plateau basalt suite, recently described in this journal. The correlation appears to vary in quality from place to place and some reasons for this are suggested. Attention is particularly drawn to recent studies which suggest that for palaeomagnetic purposes there may be two groups of lavas, divisible on the basis of whether their magnetic minerals became oxidized under high or low temperature conditions.
A sizable body of opinion now holds (not necessarily correctly) that self-reversals are a negligible factor in the correlation between oxidation and reversed polarity, and that some compositional effect is most probably involved. Virtually the only known petrographic criterion which can (statistically) distinguish reversely from normally magnetized rocks is their (statistically) higher oxidation states. An obvious implication is that the water content of magmas, and perhaps of high-grade metamorphic rocks, is somehow increased during episodes of reversed polarity, so that a slightly larger proportion of rocks is more strongly oxidized.
Since motions of the Earth's core, upper mantle processes, and field reversals are apparently all related, compositional changes originating in the upper mantle could well be also related to field reversals. Alternating linear zones of more and less altered baslat recently reported from one place near the mid-Atlantic ridge might have arisen in such a way.
The importance of relating palaeomagnetic measurements to detailed mineralogical studies of magnetic minerals is again stressed.  相似文献

湖泊作为过去环境变化的信息载体,可以很好地提供高分辨率的连续记录,因此常被用来进行定年研究。湖泊沉积物放射性碳定年由于缺乏陆源植物残体、碳屑等可靠的定年材料,多选用其他材料(如全样有机质、水生残体及各类壳体),但是这些材料通常受到“碳库效应”(The reservoir effect)的影响,而使得年代结果失真,导致难以建立高精度的年代框架,成为这一领域研究放射性碳年代应用的瓶颈。因此,如何对湖相沉积物14C年代结果进行有效的碳库效应校正,对高精度年代序列的建立具有重要意义。本文综览了近几十年来针对湖泊碳库效应进行研究所取得的一系列研究成果,详细总结了影响湖泊碳库效应的各种因素,讨论了碳库效应对湖泊沉积物定年结果的影响;分析了目前对湖泊碳库的各类校正方法,包括使用同一测年手段、不同测年材料建立点上碳库大小以及采用不同测年手段对碳库的校正等。本文为湖泊沉积物高精度年代序列的建立提供了一定的参考。  相似文献

对陇西盆地六盘山西侧山麓剥蚀面上断岘剖面的古地磁、磁化率和粒度分析表明,该剖面具有1.8 M a B.P.以来完整的黄土-古土壤沉积序列。断岘剖面以下7级黄河阶地的发育形成以及在1.1和0.8 M a B.P.前后所指示的腾格里沙漠扩张变化,反映了第四纪早更新世以来青藏高原阶段性隆升对黄土高原西部环境变化影响,以及在青藏高原隆升过程中构造与气候的变化与耦合响应。  相似文献

 六盘山作为青藏高原的东北构造边界,东西两侧有着明显的风成沉积差异。通过对陇西盆地六盘山西侧山麓剥蚀面上厚约223 m的断岘黄土-古土壤剖面的古地磁、磁化率和粒度分析,该剖面具有1.8 Ma BP以来完整的风成沉积旋回。主要应用砂粒百分含量(>63 μm)作为指示风成物质来源区沙漠范围和气候干旱的直接指标,初步发现腾格里沙漠自1.8 Ma BP以来至少有2次大的扩张与变化过程,分别发生在1.1和0.8 Ma BP前后。研究表明腾格里沙漠的扩张与变化可能同全球性的冰量增加和冬季风增强以及区域性的青藏高原隆升有成因上的联系。  相似文献

Summary. In order to obtain a Lower Palaeozoic pole for the Armorican Massif and to test the origin of the Ibero-Armorican arc, the Ordovician dolerites of the Crozon peninsula have been palaeomagnetically studied. The samples show a multicomponent magnetization which has been revealed by AF and thermal demagnetization and thoroughly investigated with rock magnetic experiments, polished section examinations and K/Ar dating. Four groups of directions have been recognized, often superimposed on each other in an individual sample. One component (D) has always the lowest blocking temperatures and coercivities and is considered to be of viscous origin, acquired recently in situ or in the laboratory during storage. Two components (A and B) are interpreted to be of secondary origin and to correspond to the observed K/Ar age distribution between 300 and 190 Myr. These ages represent the time interval between two regional thermo-tectonic events, associated with the Hercynian orogeny and the intrusion of dykes related to the early opening of the Central Atlantic Ocean and the Bay of Biscay. A fourth component (C) could be of Ordovician or younger Palaeozoic age; it is not clear whether the age of the magnetization is pre- or post-folding, but a pre-folding age would yield a direction of magnetization similar to Ordovician results from the Iberian peninsula. The latter interpretation suggests a fairly high palaeolatitude, which is in agreement with a glacio-marine postulated for sediments overlying the dolerite sills.  相似文献

利用C14测年方法对陕西翠华山不同时期的山崩进行了绝对年龄的初步研究。C14测年数据与宏观野外地质地貌调查的结论吻合,证实了翠华山山崩景观形成为多期性的结论,同时与地震事件有一定的关系,为研究山崩成因提供了科学论据。  相似文献
