An observed relation between line-of-sight velocities and the longitudinal component of the magnetic field in quiescent prominences is discussed. Weak fields in quiescent prominences are associated with large velocities determined from Doppler shifts of resolved emission knots and Doppler line widths measured in Ca ii K line. It is suggested that the observed irregular motions in prominences are driven by photospheric horizontal convection coupled by the prominence magnetic field. An energy flux of 3 × 105 ergs cm–2 sec–1 present in the form of Alfvén waves in quiescent prominences is consistent with the observations.  相似文献

During operations on the Spacelab-2 Shuttle mission, the NRL High Resolution Telescope and Spectrograph (HRTS) recorded spectra of a variety of solar features in the 1200–1700 Å wavelength region which contains spectral lines and continua well suited for investigating the temperature minimum, the chromosphere and transition zone. These data show that, at the highest spatial resolution, the transition zone spectra are broken up from a continuous intensity distribution along the slit into discrete emission elements. The average dimensions of these discrete transition zone structures is 2400 km along the slit, but an analysis of their emission measures and densities shows that the dimensions of the actual emitting volume is conciderably less. If these structures are modelled as an ensemble of subresolution filaments, we find that these filaments have typical radii of from 3 to 30 km and that the cross-sectional fill factor is in the range from 10–5 to 10–2. The transport of mass and energy through these transition zone structures is reduced by this same factor of 10–5 to 10–2 which has significant consequences for our understanding of the dynamics of the solar atmosphere. Because the HRTS transition zone line profiles are not broadened by resolved large-spatial-scale solar velocity fields, the line widths of the Civ lines have been analyzed. The average line width is 0.195 Å (FWHM) and requires an average nonthermal velocity of 16 km s–1 (most-probable) or 19 km s–1 (root-mean-square) which is lower than previously observed values.  相似文献

We describe an electrograph instrument designed for measurement of macroscopic electric fields in solar plasmas, using the polarization dependence of line width in Stark-broadened hydrogen Paschen emission lines. Observations of quiescent prominences and limb chromosphere with our electrograph at the NSO/Sac Peak Evans Coronal Facility provide upper limits of 5–10 V cm–1 for transverse macroscopic electric fields in these structures, averaged over an area of about 5 × 7 arc sec. Random thermal motions of hydrogen ions across magnetic field lines generate a quasi-static electric field, which should be distinguishable from pressure broadening in the intensely magnetized chromosphere over a sunspot, given an electrograph sensitivity a factor 2–3 better than that achieved here. Future electrograph measurements of limb flares, post-flare loops and eruptive prominences, even at 5 V cm–1 sensitivity, could provide a useful new test of reconnection and discharge effects in such dynamic structures.  相似文献

The Na i D emission lines are found to brighten temporarily in restricted regions of quiescent prominences and we call the phenomena the Na i D brightenings. The comparison of observed intensities of Na i D lines with model calculations shows that the phenomena is attributed to a kind of local activation of quiescent prominences accompanied by mass motions. The Na i D lines are emitted from extraordinarily high pressure regions in which the pressure rises up to 0.37 2.7 dyn cm–2 and the temperature seems to be in the range between 5800 7000 K. The line-of-sight velocity of the mass motions amounted to several tens of km s–1 in some Na i D emitting prominences investigated. The life time of the phenomena is estimated to be about several tens of minutes.  相似文献

SUMER – Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation – is not only an extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectrometer capable of obtaining detailed spectra in the range from 500 to 1610 Å, but, using the telescope mechanisms, it also provides monochromatic images over the full solar disk and beyond, into the corona, with high spatial resolution. We report on some aspects of the observation programmes that have already led us to a new view of many aspects of the Sun, including quiet Sun, chromospheric and transition region network, coronal hole, polar plume, prominence and active region studies. After an introduction, where we compare the SUMER imaging capabilities to previous experiments in our wavelength range, we describe the results of tests performed in order to characterize and optimize the telescope under operational conditions. We find the spatial resolution to be 1.2 arc sec across the slit and 2 arc sec (2 detector pixels) along the slit. Resolution and sensitivity are adequate to provide details on the structure, physical properties, and evolution of several solar features which we then present. Finally some information is given on the data availability and the data management system.  相似文献

Data obtained during the first rocket flight of the NRL High Resolution Telescope and Spectrograph (HRTS) have been used to study nonthermal velocities for spectral lines primarily covering the temperature range 104 to 2 × 106 K. The high spectral and spatial resolution, combined with an enhanced dynamic intensity range of the reduced data, has enabled us to study the distribution of the nonthermal velocities for quiet and active regions. Average values of the nonthermal velocities peak at about 27 km s–1 at 105 K for the quiet regions, with a wide distribution of nonthermal velocities for each line. The active region nonthermal velocities have a narrower distribution which is weighted towards higher values. The SiIV and C IV line profiles are not well described by a single Gaussian, indicating that high-velocity components (above 30 km s–1) are present in the quiet-Sun spectra. The radiative losses for all plasma above l05 K have been calculated for the quiet Sun, an active region and a coronal hole. These have been compared with the acoustic wave flux inferred from the nonthermal line widths. There appears to be a sufficient flux of waves to heat these regions of the atmosphere.  相似文献

Wavelengths of clean atmospheric water lines, and some solar lines, in the wavelength interval 10750 Å to 10900 Å have been measured to an accuracy approaching ± 1 mÅ. Strengths and wavelengths have been measured for all atmospheric water lines with absorption coefficients > 5 × 10–4 cm–1 gm–1 cm–2 at 280K, that lie within 15 Å of the He I 10830 Å featur of the stronger He component is affected by a weak water line which reduces atmospheric transmission by nearly 1 % with 10 mm precipitable water in the line of sight.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under contract with the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Absolute intensities of emission lines in the wavelength range from 1200 Å to 1817 Å from the large sunspot in McMath region 12510 near Sun center are presented. The intensities are averaged across the umbra and penumbra of the sunspot. The observations were made with the NRL slit spectrograph on Skylab. Emission measures are derived from the measured intensities. Assuming a balance between the divergence of the conductive energy flux and the radiative energy losses, a self-consistent model of the lower transition region in the sunspot is constructed. The model gives a constant pressure of about 0.19 dyne cm-2, and a conductive flux which decreases approximately one order of magnitude between 2 × 105 K and 4 × 104 K. The temperature gradient is relatively constant, increasing slowly with decreasing temperature.Ball Brothers Research Corporation.  相似文献

Rocket measurements of absolute intensities in the solar X-ray spectrum on November 4, 1964 around 16:35 UT yield the following results : 1.8·10-2 erg cm-2 sec-1 (wavelength band 44–60 Å); and 1.5·10-3 erg cm-2 sec-1 (wavelength band 8–15Å). These values were obtained under nearly quiet minimum conditions of the sun.  相似文献

This paper is a result of the evolution of researches on the prediction and identification of the solar EUV spectrum by Ivanov-Holodny and the author. An absolute calibration of the solar EUV spectrum is given. The corresponding energy distribution is shown in Figure 2. During the minimum solar activity the radiation flux in the range below 1027 Å near the earth is 2.6 erg/cm2 sec, in the maximum it is 8 erg/cm2 sec.Abundances of fifteen elements in the solar atmosphere were deduced (Table III) from a comparison of predicted and observed intensities of more than 300 lines in the spectral region below 1215 Å.  相似文献

The Ultraviolet Spectrometer and Polarimeter (UVSP) on the Solar Maximum Mission spacecraft is described, including the experiment objectives, system design, performance, and modes of operation. The instrument operates in the wavelength range 1150–3600 Å with better than 2 arc sec spatial resolution, raster range 256 × 256 arc sec2, and 20 mÅ spectral resolution in second order. Observations can be made with specific sets of 4 lines simultaneously, or with both sides of 2 lines simultaneously for velocity and polarization. A rotatable retarder can be inserted into the spectrometer beam for measurement of Zeeman splitting and linear polarization in the transition region and chromosphere.Currently at MMTO, University of Arizona, Tucson, Ariz. 85721, U.S.A.  相似文献

We present a comprehensive set of spectral data from two quiescent solar prominences observed in parallel from space and ground: with the VTT, simultaneous two-dimensional imaging of H4862 Å and Caii 8542 Å yields a constant ratio, indicating small spatial pressure variations over the prominence. With the Gregory, simultaneous spectra of Caii 8542 Å and Hei 10830 Å were taken, their widths yielding 8000 K <T kin<9000 K and 3<v nth<8 km s–1. The integrated line intensities show a distinct relation E(Hei) versus E(Caii) for each prominence (`branching'). The intensity ratio of the helium triplet components is used for a simple estimate of the optical thickness, which is <1.0 for the fainter prominence but reaches up to =2.0 for the brighter one. The 0 values allow us to deduce the source function from the central line intensities and thus a mean excitation temperature Tex mean=3750 K, which determines the relative populations of the helium 3 S and 3 P levels. With SUMER, we sequentially observed six spectral windows containing higher Lyman lines, `cool' emission lines from neutrals and singly charged atoms, as well as `hot' emission lines from ions like Oiv, Sv, Nv, Ov, and Svi. The spatial variation of the EUV lines along the SUMER slit shows a pronounced maximum at the main prominence body and `side-regions' where the `hot' lines are significantly enhanced with respect to the `cool' lines from neutral and singly-ionized atoms. These selected locations were averaged over 7 and the resulting mean EUV lines were fitted by Gaussians yielding realistic widths and integrated line intensities. The intensities of `hot' lines blue-wards of the Lyman series limit appear reduced in the main prominence body but enhanced in the `side-regions'. This absorption is also visible in TRACE images of Feix/x171 Å as fine dark structure which covers only parts of the main (`cool') prominence body. The Lyman lines show a smooth decrease of both line widths and integrated emission, with increasing upper level k=5 to k=19; the widths are smaller for the prominence that yields lower T kin from the ground-based spectra. The level populations along the line of sight follow for 5 lek le a smooth Boltzmann distribution with T ex>6×104 K, the levels k>8 appearing more and more overpopulated. The larger widths of the Lyman lines require high non-thermal broadening close to that of `hot' EUV lines. In contrast, the Heii emission is more related to the `cool' lines.  相似文献

Using narrow-band H filtergrams, we develop a quantitative non-LTE approach to determine the physical conditions prevailing at the tops of (post)-flare loops observed against the solar disc. At temperatures 10000–15000 K, the tops of flare loops turn to emission at H line center when the gas pressure P g reaches 1 dyn cm–2 and should be clearly visible for P g 3 dyn cm–2, independently of the loop diameter. This situation corresponds to the electron density of the order 1012 cm–3. The contrast of flare-loops (in projection on the disc) at H line center is mainly the function of P g , while in the line wings (H ± 1 Å) the loop can be visible in absorption or emission only when rather strong microturbulence is present or for unrealistically high gas pressures. Finally, we briefly discuss our diagnostical results in frame of the latest (post)-flare loop model.  相似文献

We studied the EUV line spectra of three flare observed with the NRL slit spectrograph on Skylab. The electron densities in the flare transition-zone plasmas are determined from density-sensitive lines of Si iii and O iv. The electron densities in all three flares studied were greatest during the flare maximum with values of the order of 1012 cm–3. The density decreases by a factor of 2 to 3 in the decay phase of the flares. The intensities of EUV lines from the flare chromospheric and transition-zone plasmas all are greatly enhanced. In contrast to lines for Oi, Ci, Feii and other chromospheric ions, the lines of Oiv and Nv and other transition-zone lines are not only enhanced but also very much broadened.Fitting of the N v 1242 Å line with a two-gaussian model shows that for two of the flares studied, there is a red-shifted component in addition to an unshifted component. The shifted component in the N v line profiles is interpreted as due to a dynamic and moving plasma with a bulk motion velocity of 12 km s–1 for one flare and more than 70 km s–1 for the other. The broadened line profiles indicate that there are large turbulent mass motions with random velocities ranging from 30 to 80 km s–1.Ball Corporation. Extreme ultraviolet spectra of several active regions are presented and analyzed. Spectral intensities of 3 active regions observed with the NRL Skylab XUV spectroheliograph (170–630 Å) are derived. From this data density sensitive line ratios of Mg viii, Si x, S xii, Fe ix, Fe x, Fe xi, Fe xii, Fe xiii, Fe xiv, and Fe xv are examined and typically yield, to within a factor of 2, electron pressures of 1 dyne cm–2 (n e T = 6 × 1015 cm–3 K). The differential emission measure of the brightest 35 × 35 portion of an active region is obtained between 1.4 × 104 K and 5 × 106 K from HCO OSO-VI XUV (280–1370 Å) spectra published by Dupree et al. (1973). Stigmatic EUV spectra (1170–1710 Å) obtained by the NRL High Resolution Telescope and Spectrograph (HRTS) are also presented. Doppler velocities as a function of position along the slit are derived in an active region plage and sunspot. The velocities are based on an absolute wavelength scale derived from neutral chromospheric lines and are accurate to ±2 km s–1. Downflows at 105 K are found throughout the plage with typical velocities of 10 km s–1. In the sunspot, downflows are typically 5 to 20 km s–1 over the umbra and zero over the penumbra. In addition localized 90 and 150 km s–1 downflows are found in the umbra in the same 1 × 1 resolution elements which contain the lower velocity downflows. Spectral intensities and velocities in a typical plage 1 resolution element are derived. The velocities are greatest ( 10 km s–1) at 105 K with lower velocities at higher and lower temperatures. The differential emission measure between 1.3 × 104 K and 2 × 106 K is derived and is found to be comparable to that derived from the OSO-VI data. An electron pressure of 1.4 dynes cm–2 (n e T = 1.0 × 1016 cm–3 K) is determined from pressure sensitive line ratios of Si iii, O iv, and N iv. From the data presented it is shown that convection plays a major role in determining the structure and dynamics of the active region transition zone and corona.  相似文献

Simultaneous spectra of spicules in H, H and the Ca ii K have been analyzed. These spectra were obtained with the échelle spectrograph of Sacramento Peak Observatory and have a resolution of 1.5 s of arc. Data include absolute intensities, velocities, linewidths and the optical depth at the center of H. Electron densities range between 6 × 1010cm–3 and 1.2 × 1011cm–3, while the range of the electron temperature is between 12000K and 15000K at a height of 5400 km above the limb. The analysis of the variation of the line of sight velocity across spicules shows that their rotation is very small. There is very good correlation in the structure of all three lines.  相似文献

The intensity of the sun was measured in the Lyman- emission line with 2.5 arc-seconds of resolution. The experiment was flown in an Aerobee-150 rocket on April 28, 1966. It contained a Cassegrain telescope with a pinhole aperture placed at the focus followed by a gas-gain ionization chamber whose spectral response was 1050 Å to 1350 Å.An isophote map 1.5 by 3 arc-minutes in size made from a composite of 90 linear scans shows an enhanced region and adjacent to it a prominent dark lane 20 arc-seconds wide. The measured intensity ratio of these two regions is nine. Bright features between 6 and 20 arc-seconds in size showed typical peak intensities of 20% greater than the surrounding chromosphere. The smallest features observed were 2.5 arc-seconds in size. A direct measurement of the absolute intensity at 1216 Å gave a value of 5.9 × 104 erg cm–2 s–1 sterad–1 in the quiet chromosphere.Based on observations made by the author at the E. O. Observations with the UVSP instrument on the SMM spacecraft were made at the polar limb and disk center for the accurate determination of Doppler shifts of the Civ 1548 Å emission line formed at 105 K in the transition region of the quiet Sun. Individual data points representing 3 arc sec square pixels yield both redshifts and blueshifts, but the mean values from four different days of observations are toward the red. The mean redshifts are in the range 4–8 km s-1 and are produced by nearly vertically directed flows; the uncertainty associated with the mean values correspond to ±0.5 km s-1. The redshift increases with brightness of the Civ line.  相似文献

Time series of the nonsplit Fei 7090 Å line have been observed in several sunspots with a 100 x 100 diode array corresponding to 48 arc sec times 1.39 Å. The spatial behaviour of Doppler motions along one fixed slit position has been studied as a function of time. Former results are confirmed, that the power in the five minute range decreases from the photosphere to the umbra, where, however, values still well above the noise level are measured. Regarding the penumbra, the power tends to exhibit a maximum at locations where the line-of-sight component of a radial horizontal field should be maximal. This indicates that the direction of the oscillatory velocities might be influenced by the magnetic field or the Evershed flow. No significant power is found in the 3 min range. An exception might be seen in a small patch at the limb of the umbra of one spot.  相似文献

New R-matrix calculations of electron impact excitation rates in Caxv are used to derive theoretical electron density diagnostic emission line intensity ratios involving 2s 22p 2–2s2p 3 transitions, specifically R 1=I(208.70 Å)/I(200.98 Å), R 2=I(181.91 Å)/I(200.98 Å), and R 3=I(215.38 Å)/I(200.98 Å), for a range of electron temperatures (T e=106.4–106.8 K) and densities (N e=109–1013 cm–3) appropriate to solar coronal plasmas. Electron densities deduced from the observed values of R 1, R 2, and R 3 for several solar flares, measured from spectra obtained with the Naval Research Laboratory's S082A spectrograph on board Skylab, are found to be consistent. In addition, the derived electron densities are in excellent agreement with those determined from line ratios in Caxvi, which is formed at a similar electron temperature to Caxv. These results provide some experimental verification for the accuracy of the line ratio calculations, and hence the atomic data on which they are based. A set of eight theoretical Caxv line ratios involving 2s 22p 2–2s2p 3 transitions in the wavelength range 140–216 Å are also found to be in good agreement with those measured from spectra of the TEXT tokamak plasma, for which the electron temperature and density have been independently determined. This provides additional support for the accuracy of the theoretical line ratios and atomic data.  相似文献
