Summary Sustainable development can be defined as that which meets the needs of the current generation while leaving sufficient resources for the needs of future generations. A central objective is to decouple conventional resource use (and its corollary, waste generation) from economic development through technological innovation, improved efficiency and changes in individual practices. As the global population becomes urbanized and human activity is concentrated in urban areas, settlement planning is a key aspect of sustainability. The widespread inclusion of environmental objectives in urban plans at all scales provides an opportunity for the incorporation of urban climate knowledge into the planning process on a routine basis. Many of the stated objectives have both direct and indirect connections to climate. However, for this to happen, climate research and results must be linked more explicitly to the objectives of the sustainable settlement. In this paper, the relevance of sustainability to urban design and climate is discussed and the potential contribution of current urban climatology is assessed, identifying areas of special consideration for transfer to achieve sustainable urban planning and design.  相似文献

Here we present the first set of metal-silicate partitioning data for Cs, which we use to examine whether the primitive mantle depletion of Cs can be attributed to core segregation. Our experiments independently varied pressure from 5 to 15 GPa, temperature from 1900 to 2400 °C, metallic sulfur content from pure Fe to pure FeS, silicate melt polymerization, expressed as a ratio of non-bridging oxygens to tetrahedrally coordinated cations (nbo/t) from 1.26 to 3.1, and fO2 from two to four log units below the iron-wüstite buffer. The most important controls on the partitioning behavior of alkalis were the metallic sulfur content, expressed as XS, and the nbo/t of the silicate liquid. Normalization of XS to 0.5 yielded the following expressions for D-values as a function of nbo/t: log DNa = −2.0 + 0.44 × (nbo/t), log DK = −2.4 + 0.67 × ( nbo/t), and log DCs = −3.2 + 1.17 × (nbo/t). Normalization of nbo/t to 2.7 resulted in the following equations for D-values as a function of S content: log DNa = −4.1 + 6.4 × XS, log DK = −7.7 + 13.9 × XS, and log DCs = −12.1 + 23.3 × XS.There appears to be a negative pressure effect up to 15 GPa, but it should be noted that this trend was not present before normalization, and is based on only two measurements. There is a positive trend in cesium’s metal-silicate partition coefficient with increasing temperature. DCs exhibits the largest change and increased by a factor of three over 500 °C. The effect of oxygen fugacity has not been precisely determined but in general, lowering fO2 by two log units resulted in a rise in all D-values of approximately an order of magnitude. In general, the sensitivity of partition coefficients to changing parameters increased with atomic number.The highest D-value for Cs observed in this study is 0.345, which was obtained at nbo/t of 2.7 and a metal phase of pure FeS. This metallic composition has far more S than has been suggested for any credible core-forming metal. We therefore conclude that the depletion of Cs in Earth’s mantle is either caused by radically different behavior of Cs at pressures higher than 15 GPa or is not related to core formation. Even so, we have shown that a planet with a sufficient S inventory may incorporate significant amounts of alkali elements into its core.  相似文献

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) and dissolved copper-organic complexes were isolated from the estuarine waters of Narragansett Bay, RI, using reverse-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC). Different types of reverse-phase BOND ELUT columns (Analytichem International), including C2, C18 and phenyl-bonded phases, were studied to determine their adsorption efficiency for extracting DOM. Extraction efficiencies followed the order phenyl > C18 > C2, and phenyl − C18 > C2 for DOM and organic copper, respectively. However, comparisons of BOND ELUT and C18 SEP-PAK (Waters Associates) columns indicated that SEP-PAK columns were the most efficient when both DOM and organic copper were considered. Chromatographic profiles of the isolated DOM obtained using high-performance liquid chromatography were similar in elution characteristics and resembled chromatograms typical of fulvic acid. The UV-absorption characteristics of the DOM showed small differences and suggested that the different reverse-phase columns isolated material that was qualitatively similar.Copper-organic complexes isolated using C18 RPLC were studied to examine the dissociation of organically bound copper in seawater as the pH is lowered. Only a small amount of the complexed copper was displaced by the H+ with about 40% of the copper remaining bound at pH 3. However, the chromatographic elution behavior of the DOM and organic copper was significantly altered under acidic conditions as a result of protonation of acidic functional sites on the organic matter.  相似文献

Landslides represent hazardous phenomena, often with significant implications. Monitoring landslides with time-series surface observations can indicate surface failure. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) employing compact digital cameras, in conjunction with structure-from-motion (SfM) and multi-view stereo (MVS) image processing approaches, have become commonplace in the geoscience research community. These methods offer relatively low-cost, flexible solutions for many geomorphological monitoring applications. However, conventionally ground control points (GCPs) are required for registration purposes, the provision of which is often expensive, difficult or even impracticable in hazardous and inaccessible terrain. In an attempt to overcome the reliance on GCPs, this paper reports research that has developed a morphology-based strategy to co-register multi-temporal UAV-derived products. It applies the attribute of curvature in combination with the scale-invariant feature transform algorithm, to generate time-invariant curvature features, which serve as pseudo-GCPs. Openness, a surface morphological digital elevation model derivative, is applied to identify relatively stable ground regions from which pseudo-GCPs are selected. A sensitivity threshold quantifies the minimum detectable change alongside unresolved biases and misalignment errors. The approach is evaluated at two study sites in the UK, first at Sandford with artificially induced surface change, and second at an active landslide at Hollin Hill, with multi-epoch SfM-MVS products derived from a consumer-grade UAV. Elevation changes and annual displacement rates at dm-level are estimated, with optimal results achieved over winter periods. The morphology-based co-registration strategy resulted in relative error ratios (i.e. mean error divided by average flying height) in the range 1:800–2500, comparable with those reported by similar studies conducted with UAVs augmented with real time kinematic (RTK)-Global Navigation Satellite Systems. Analysis demonstrates the potential of the morphology-based strategy for a semi-automatic, and practical co-registration approach to quantify surface motion. This can ultimately complement geotechnical and geophysical investigations and support the understanding of landslide behaviour, model prediction and construction of measures for mitigating risks. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Seagrass landscapes are coastal environments that support diverse and abundant faunal communities. This study investigated infaunal assemblage patterns in fragmented and continuous Zostera muelleri habitat in southeastern New Zealand. Intertidal macroinvertebrate assemblages were examined in fragmented seagrass habitat (containing discrete patches varying in size from 1 to 200 m2) and continuous meadows (>1000 m2), in a small and a large tidal inlet. Community indices differed between seagrass habitat types and the total number of taxa was significantly lower at fragmented seagrass sites in one of the inlets. The total number of individuals and diversity were significantly different between fragmented and continuous seagrass habitat in both inlets, but diversity values showed inconsistent patterns between inlets. Multivariate analysis confirmed that different seagrass habitat types support distinct macrofaunal assemblages in each inlet and position on the shore was identified as the single most important variable explaining dissimilarities in assemblage compositions. These findings confirm the influence of seagrass habitat size on infaunal assemblages and also highlight the importance of spatial position of seagrass habitat in intertidal areas.  相似文献

Soils in the Knersvlakte are particularly prone to crusting and have lower inherent infiltrability than other soils across western southern Africa. Micromorphological techniques were used to examine the structure and porosity of soil crusts in the Knersvlakte to ascertain why crusting is so intense in this region. Quantile regression using boundary lines was employed to examine the relationships between infiltrability and soil properties for all samples (n = 67). This analysis showed that infiltrability is potentially maximal at low water- dispersible 'clay plus silt' content and low silt content (r^2 = 0.72 and 0.64; respectively, n = 67) (Figure 2). The strength of crusts, pH, EC, clay mineralogy, and water-dispersible clay, silt and 'clay plus silt' content were compared, and a pore analysis using optical microscopy was undertaken on images of six soil thin sections (n = 6) (circular and parallel polarizers). Pore analysis was further undertaken on five horizontal slices of equal dimensions taken through each soil thin section. The porosity samples with low infiltrability (〈 100 mm·hr^-1, n = 4) had greater crust strength, lower porosity (both total and in the least porous slice) and greater water-dispersible 'day plus silt' and silt content than the porosity samples with high infiltrability (〉 100mm·hr^-1, n = 2). The porosity samples with low infiltrability showed a trend of lower pH and greater water dispersible clay percentage. Porosity varied within the porosity samples due to the presence of dense clay/silt bands (〈 0.5 mm in width) with relatively few air vesicles. The porosity samples with horizontal slices of low porosity (but large numbers of air vesicles) had low infiltrability, while those without slices of low porosity (and relatively few air vesicles) had high infiltrability. We conclude that the intense crusting and resultant low infiltrability of soils in the Knersvlakte appears to be related to the formation of thin, dense clay/silt bands in the pedoderm.  相似文献

The purpose of this research was to investigate the potential causes of low oxygen levels in the bottom water of the Oyster Grounds region of the shallow southern North Sea, an area which provides suitable conditions for low oxygen levels to develop. At the end of the summer stratified period, relevant biogeochemical processes were investigated using a combination of sedimentary and water column rate measurements. Phytoplankton nitrate and ammonium uptake was measured throughout the water column using (15)N labelled isotopes and showed ammonium uptake dominated in the upper and bottom mixed layer with a maximum 294.4 micromol N m(-3)h(-1). In the deep chlorophyll maximum at the thermocline, primary production was dominated by nitrate uptake, with an average of 35.0 micromol N m(-3)h(-1), relative to ammonium uptake, with an average of 24.6 micromol N m(-3)h(-1). This high relative nitrate uptake will in part result in exportable new production to the isolated bottom mixed layer and sediments, as opposed to regenerated ammonium driven uptake. This biomass export was indicated by significant benthic oxygen consumption rates in the stratified region (782-1275 micromol O(2)m(-2)h(-1)micromol N m(-3)h(-1)) long after the end of the spring bloom. The sediments were also an active net source of nitrate, ammonium, phosphate and silicate into the bottom mixed layer of 4.4, 8.4, 2.3 and 68.8 micromol m(-2)h(-1), respectively. The export of new production within the thermocline to the bottom mixed layer and the consequent sediment oxygen consumption in the isolated bottom mixed layer in the Oyster Grounds are expected to have contributed to the low bottom water oxygen concentrations of 2.07 mg l(-1) (64.7 micromol l(-1)) measured. The long stratified period associated with this low oxygen is predicted to occur more regularly in the future and continued monitoring of this ecologically important region is therefore essential if the causes of these potentially damaging low oxygen levels are to be fully understood.  相似文献

Measurements of sub-surface light attenuation (Kd), Secchi depth and suspended particulate material (SPM) were made at 382 locations in transitional, coastal and offshore waters around the United Kingdom (hereafter UK) between August 2004 and December 2005. Data were analysed statistically in relation to a marine water typology characterised by differences in tidal range, mixing and salinity. There was a strong statistically significant linear relationship between SPM and Kd for the full data set. We show that slightly better results are obtained by fitting separate models to data from transitional waters and coastal and offshore waters combined. These linear models were used to predict Kd from SPM. Using a statistic (D) to quantify the error of prediction of Kd from SPM, we found an overall prediction error rate of 23.1%. Statistically significant linear relationships were also evident between the log of Secchi depth and the log of Kd in waters around the UK. Again, statistically significant improvements were obtained by fitting separate models to estuarine and combined coastal/offshore data – however, the prediction error was improved only marginally, from 31.6% to 29.7%. Prediction was poor in transitional waters (D = 39.5%) but relatively good in coastal/offshore waters (D = 26.9%).SPM data were extracted from long term monitoring data sites held by the UK Environment Agency. The appropriate linear models (estuarine or combined coastal/offshore) were applied to the SPM data to obtain representative Kd values from estuarine, coastal and offshore sites. Estuarine waters typically had higher concentrations of SPM (8.2–73.8 mg l−1) compared to coastal waters (3.0–24.1 mg l−1) and offshore waters (9.3 mg l−1). The higher SPM values in estuarine waters corresponded to higher values of Kd (0.8–5.6 m−1). Water types that were identified by large tidal ranges and exposure typically had the highest Kd ranges in both estuarine and coastal waters. In terms of susceptibility to eutrophication, large macrotidal, well mixed estuarine waters, such as the Thames embayment and the Humber estuary were identified at least risk from eutrophic conditions due to light-limiting conditions of the water type.  相似文献
