Using a set of compilations of measurements for extragalactic radio sources, we construct all-sky maps of the Faraday rotation produced by the Galactic magnetic field. In order to generate the maps, we treat the radio source positions as a kind of 'mask' and construct combinations of spherical harmonic modes that are orthogonal on the masked sky. As long as relatively small multipoles are used, the resulting maps are quite stable to changes in the selection criteria for the sources, and show clearly the structure of the local Galactic magnetic field. We also suggest the use of these maps as templates for cosmic microwave background (CMB) foreground analysis, illustrating the idea with a cross-correlation analysis between the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe ( WMAP ) data and our maps. We find a significant cross-correlation, indicating the presence of a significant residual contamination.  相似文献

A model of the predawn bulge ionosphere composition and structure is constructed and compared with the ion mass spectrometer measurements from the Pioneer Venus Orbiter during orbits 117 and 120. Particular emphasis is given to the identification of the mass-2 ion which we find unequivocally due to D+ (and not H2+). The atmospheric D/H ratio of 1.4% and 2.5% is obtained at the homopause (~ 130 km) for the two orbits. The H2+ contribution to the mass-2 ion density is less than 10%, and the H2 mixing ratio must be <0.1 ppm at 130 km altitude. The He+ data require a downward He+ flux of ~2 × 107 cm?2 sec?1 in the predawn region which suggest that the light ions also flow across the terminator from day to night along with the observed O+ ion flow.  相似文献

Corotating solar wind streams emanating from stable coronal structures provide an unique opportunity to compare the response of planetary ionospheres to the energy conveyed in the streams. For recurrent solar conditions the signal propagating outward along spiral paths in interplanetary space can at times exhibit rather similar content at quite different downstream locations in the ecliptic plane. Using solar wind measurements from plasma detectors on ISEE-3, Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) and Helios-A, as well as in-situ ion composition measurements from Bennett Ion Mass Spectrometers on the Atmosphere Explorer-E and PVO spacecraft, corotating stream interactions are examined at Earth and Venus. During May–July 1979 a sequence of distinct, recurrent coronal regions developed at the Sun. Analysis of these regions and the associated solar wind characteristics indicates a corrresponding sequence of corotating streams, identifiable over wide distances. The time series of solar wind velocity variations observed at Earth, Venus, and the Helios-A positions during June–July attests to intervals of corotating stream propagation. The characteristics of the stream which passed Earth on July 3, are observed at Helios-A and at Venus (PVO) about 8 days later, consistent with the spiral path propagation delay times between the locations in the ecliptic plane. On July 3, Earth and Venus have a wide azimuthal separation of about 142 . Although the planetary environments are distinctly different, pronounced and somewhat analagous ionospheric responses to the stream passage are observed at both Earth and Venus. The response to the intercepted stream is consistent with independent investigations which have shown that the variability of the solar wind momentum flux is an important factor in the solar wind-ionosphere interaction at both planets.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a sufficiently high residual salt load in the dry sediments of the St Lucia Estuary to cause salinity problems should it later fill up with either freshwater or seawater. The estuary lakes have suffered the effects of a severe drought since 2002 with the result that many areas were dry, and the salinity of the residual water varied between 4 psu and up to five times that of seawater. Measurements of the salts content in the sediments to a depth of 20 cm showed that more than 2 million tonnes of salt was held in this layer of the sediment in 2006. Recent management of the estuary (since 1970) has ensured that the mouth was not artificially opened. This was to prevent the inflow of seawater, with its salts, that would otherwise enter while the drought was in place. The results of the sediment salinity data showed that if the drought had been broken and the lake area filled with rain and river water, the resulting salinity would be about 6 psu. In March 2007, Cyclone Gamede in the Indian Ocean off the east coast of South Africa produced a wave climate at sea that resulted in the mouth breaching; thus introducing an estimated 12 million tonnes of salts. The high salinity in the system resulting from this breach is expected to have an adverse effect on the ecology of the system, whereas the residual salinity in the sediments would not have caused an environmental problem. If the estuary and lake system were to fill completely with seawater, the residual salts together with seawater will raise the salinity to an initial value higher than 40 psu, which will have the effect of suppressing much of the important submerged vegetation that is vital for sustaining juvenile fish in the system. Many of the large fauna will also suffer from a shortage of freshwater.  相似文献

Experiments have been conducted in the P-T range 2.5–15 GPa and 850–1,500°C using bulk compositions in the systems SiO2–TiO2–Al2O3–Fe2O3–FeO–MnO–MgO–CaO–Na2O–K2O–P2O5 and SiO2–TiO2–Al2O3–MgO–CaO–Na2O to investigate the Ca-Eskola (CaEs Ca0.50.5AlSi2O6) content of clinopyroxene in eclogitic assemblages containing garnet + clinopyroxene + SiO2 ± TiO2 ± kyanite as a function of P, T, and bulk composition. The results show that CaEsss in clinopyroxene increases with increasing T and is strongly bulk composition dependent whereby high CaEs-contents are favoured by bulk compositions with high normative anorthite and low diopside contents. In this study, a maximum of 18 mol% CaEsss was found at 6 GPa and 1,350°C in a kyanite-eclogite assemblage garnet + clinopyroxene + kyanite + rutile + coesite. By comparison, no significant increase in CaEsss with increasing P could be observed. If the formation of oriented SiO2-rods frequently observed in eclogititc clinopyroxenes is due to the retrogressive breakdown of a CaEs-component then these textures are a cooling rather than a decompression phenomenon and are most likely to be found in kyanite-bearing eclogites cooled from temperatures ≥750°C. The presence of clinopyroxene with approx. 4 mol% CaEsss in an experiment conducted at 2.5 GPa/850°C confirms earlier suggestions based on field data that vacancy-rich clinopyroxenes are not necessarily restricted to ultrahigh pressure metamorphic conditions. Solar wind (SW) helium, neon, and argon trapped in a bulk metallic glass (BMG) target flown on NASA’s Genesis mission were analyzed for their bulk composition and depth-dependent distribution. The bulk isotopic and elemental composition for all three elements is in good agreement with the mean values observed in the Apollo Solar Wind Composition (SWC) experiment. Conversely, the He fluence derived from the BMG is up to 30% lower than values reported from other Genesis bulk targets or in-situ measurements during the exposure period. SRIM implantation simulations using a uniform isotopic composition and the observed bulk velocity histogram during exposure reproduces the Ne and Ar isotopic variations with depth within the BMG in a way which is generally consistent with observations. The similarity of the BMG release patterns with the depth-dependent distributions of trapped solar He, Ne, and Ar found in lunar and asteroidal regolith samples shows that also the solar noble gas record of extraterrestrial samples can be explained by mass separation of implanted SW ions with depth. Consequently, we conclude that a second solar noble gas component in lunar samples, referred to as the “SEP” component, is not needed. On the other hand, a small fraction of the total solar gas in the BMG released from shallow depths is markedly enriched in the light isotopes relative to predictions from implantation simulations with a uniform isotopic composition. Contributions from a neutral solar or interstellar component are too small to explain this shallow sited gas. We tentatively attribute this superficially implanted gas to low-speed, current-sheet related SW, which was fractionated in the corona due to inefficient Coulomb drag. This fractionation process could also explain relatively high Ne/Ar elemental ratios in the same initial gas fraction.  相似文献

Atomistic simulations have been carried out to investigate the mechanisms of noble gas incorporation in minerals using both the traditional two-region approach and the “supercell” method. The traditional two-region approach has been used to calculate defect energies for Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe incorporation in MgO, CaO, diopside and forsterite in the static limit and at one atmosphere pressure. The possibilities of noble gas incorporation via both substitution and interstitial mechanisms are studied. The favored mechanism varies from mineral to mineral and from noble gas to noble gas. In all minerals studied, the variation of the solution energies of noble gas substitution with atomic radius appears approximately parabolic, analogous to those for 1+, 2+, 3+ and 4+ trace element incorporation on crystal lattice sites. Noble gas solution energies thus also fall on a curve, similar to those previously observed for cations with different charges, but with much lower curvature. The “supercell” method has been used to investigate the pressure dependence of noble gas incorporation in the same systems. Results indicate a large variation of the solubility of the larger noble gases, Kr and Xe with pressure. In addition, explicit simulation of incorporation at the (0 0 1) surface of MgO shows that the solubility of the heavier noble gases may be considerably enhanced by the presence of interfaces.  相似文献

Multiple Internal Reflection Fourier Transform Infra-Red (MIR-FTIR) spectroscopy was developed and used for in situ flow-through experiments designed to study the process of organic acid promoted silicate dissolution. In tandem with the FTIR analysis, ex situ X-ray scattering was used to perform detailed analyses of the changes in the surface structure and chemistry resulting from the dissolution process. Phthalic acid and forsteritic glass that had been Chemically Vapour Deposited (CVD) onto an internal reflection element were used as reactants, and the MIR-FTIR results showed that phthalic acid may promote dissolution by directly binding to exposed Mg metal ion centers on the solid surface. Integrated infrared absorption intensity as a function of time shows that phthalic acid attachment apparently follows a t1/2 dependence, indicating that attachment is a diffusive process. The diffusion coefficient of phthalic acid was estimated to be approximately 7 × 10−6 cm2 s−1 in the solution near the interface with the glass. Shifts in the infrared absorption structure of the phthalate complexed with the surface compared to the solute species indicate that phthalate forms a seven-membered ring chelate complex. This bidentate complex efficiently depletes Mg from the glass surface, such that after reaction as much as 95% of the Mg may be removed. Surface depletion in Mg causes adsorbate density to fall after an initial attachment stage for the organic ligand. In addition, the infrared analysis shows that silica in the near surface polymerizes after Mg removal, presumably to maintain charge balance. X-ray reflectivity shows that the dissolution rate of forsteritic glass at pH 4 based on Mg removal in such flow-through experiments was equal to 4 × 10−12 mol cm−2 s−1 (geometric surface area normalized). Reflectivity also shows how the surface mass density decreases during reaction from 2.64 g cm−3 to 2.2 g cm−3, consistent with preferential loss of Mg from the surface. Auxiliary batch experiments with forsteritic glass films deposited onto soda glass were also completed to add further constraints to the mechanism of reaction. By combining reflectivity with diffuse scatter measurements it is shown that the primary interface changes little in terms of atomic-scale roughness even after removal of several hundred angstroms of material. These measurements unequivocally show how a dicarboxylic acid bonds to and may chelate the dissolution of a magnesium-bearing silicate. At the molecular level the solid surface retreat may best be described by a depinning model where Mg is preferentially removed and residual silica tetrahedra polymerize and act to episodically “pin” the surface.  相似文献
