CO2 saturations are estimated at Sleipner using a two-step imaging workflow. The workflow combines seismic tomography (full-waveform inversion) and rock physics inversion and is applied to a two-dimensional seismic line located near the injection point at Sleipner. We use baseline data (1994 vintage, before CO2 injection) and monitor data that was acquired after 12 years of CO2 injection (2008 vintage). P-wave velocity models are generated using the Full waveform inversion technology and then, we invert selected rock physics parameters using an rock physics inversion methodology. Full waveform inversion provides high-resolution P-wave velocity models both for baseline and monitor data. The physical relations between rock physics properties and acoustic wave velocities in the Utsira unconsolidated sandstone (reservoir formation) are defined using a dynamic rock physics model based on well-known Biot–Gassmann theories. For data prior to injection, rock frame properties (porosity, bulk and shear dry moduli) are estimated using rock physics inversion that allows deriving physically consistent properties with related uncertainty. We show that the uncertainty related to limited input data (only P-wave velocity) is not an issue because the mean values of parameters are correct. These rock frame properties are then used as a priori constraint in the monitor case. For monitor data, the Full waveform inversion results show nicely resolved thin layers of CO2–brine saturated sandstones under intra-reservoir shale layers. The CO2 saturation estimation is carried out by plugging an effective fluid phase in the rock physics model. Calculating the effective fluid bulk modulus of the brine–CO2 mixture (using Brie equation in our study) is shown to be the key factor to link P-wave velocity to CO2 saturation. The inversion tests are done with several values of Brie/patchiness exponent and show that the CO2 saturation estimates are varying between 0.30 and 0.90 depending on the rock physics model and the location in the reservoir. The uncertainty in CO2 saturation estimation is usually lower than 0.20. When the patchiness exponent is considered as unknown, the inversion is less constrained and we end up with values of exponent varying between 5 and 20 and up to 33 in specific reservoir areas. These estimations tend to show that the CO2–brine mixing is between uniform and patchy mixing and variable throughout the reservoir.  相似文献

Abstract

A borehole is developed in a shallow multi-layered aquifer and used to derive the porosity, specific storage and hydraulic conductivity of the aquitard. Local values of hydrodynamical parameters are estimated from petrophysical analysis of core samples, and the empirical relationship between porosity and permeability. Vertical diffusivity is determined from the response of the aquitard to a loading cyclic signal using pressure records at different depths. Hydraulic conductivities deduced from the petrophysical analysis ranged from 10?8 to 10?10 m s?1 and are comparable with those of facies of marine/lacustrine clay observed in samples. The permeability values calculated based on diffusivity are within the range 10?9 to 10?11 m s?1 with a quasi-systematic bias of one order of magnitude. These values are average for a larger part of the aquitard and correspond to an integrated value. The methodology retained for the aquitard characterization is discussed with emphasis on the implications for the management of a complex aquifer system.

Abstract

Comprehensive characterization of its flow rates is prerequisite to a proper understanding and water management of a given hydrological region. Several studies question the soundness of stationarity in time series and suggest the need for a quantification of the events and non-stationary features in flow rate time series. In this study, we combine statistical and time–frequency (TF) analyses to characterize and classify the flow rates of an understudied region, namely Haiti. Wavelet transforms and cyclostationarity analyses were combined with principal component analysis and hierarchical clustering to identify three groups of hydrological regimes in the country, suggesting similar management: (1) relatively stable flow rates with TF behaviour; (2) periodic and strongly seasonal flow rates; and (3) unstable flow rates. We argue that the TF methodology can yield additional information in regard to flow events and multiscale behaviour, even for short records. Flow rate characterization would benefit from the exhaustive approach described here.

Extensive Upper Cretaceous volcanism in southern Madagascar was fed in part by mantle sources resembling those expressed today in the Indian Ocean at Marion and Prince Edward islands and on the central Southwest Indian Ridge. In addition, very low εNd(T) (to −17.4), high(87Sr/86Sr)T (to 0.72126) tholeiites in southwestern Madagascar were variably but highly contaminated by ancient continental material broadly like that affecting the Bushe and Poladpur Formations of the later Deccan Traps in India. Alkalic dikes in southwestern Madagascar have a rough analogue in the Mahabaleshwar Formation of the Deccan, in that they document the influence of a low 206Pb/204Pb, negative εNd, relatively low 87Sr/86Sr reservoir. A very similar reservoir is manifested at present in mid-ocean ridge basalts on the central Southwest Indian Ridge near 40°E. The original location of this end-member appears likely to have been in the Madagascan lithospheric mantle, a portion of which may have been removed in the Middle Cretaceous by the action of the Marion hotspot or the rifting of Indo-Madagascar. An origin within the hotspot itself also may be possible; however, recent products of the hotspot appear to lack completely the necessary low 206Pb/204Pb, low εNd signatures.  相似文献

A numerical groundwater model of the weathered crystalline aquifer of Ursuya (a major water source for the north-western Pyrenees region, south-western France) has been computed based on monitoring of hydrological, hydrodynamic and meteorological parameters over 3 years. The equivalent porous media model was used to simulate groundwater flow in the different layers of the weathered profile: from surface to depth, the weathered layer (5?·?10?8?≤?K?≤?5?·? 10?7 m s?1), the transition layer (7?·?10?8?≤?K?≤?1?·? 10?5 m s?1, the highest values being along major discontinuities), two fissured layers (3.5?·?10?8?≤?K?≤?5?·?? 10?4 m s?1, depending on weathering profile conditions and on the existence of active fractures), and the hard-rock basement simulated with a negligible hydraulic conductivity (K = 1 10 ?9 ). Hydrodynamic properties of these five calculation layers demonstrate both the impact of the weathering degree and of the discontinuities on the groundwater flow. The great agreement between simulated and observed hydraulic conditions allowed for validation of the methodology and its proposed use for application on analogous aquifers. With the aim of long-term management of this strategic aquifer, the model was then used to evaluate the impact of climate change on the groundwater resource. The simulations performed according to the most pessimistic climatic scenario until 2050 show a low sensitivity of the aquifer. The decreasing trend of the natural discharge is estimated at about ?360 m3 y?1 for recharge decreasing at about ?5.6 mm y?1 (0.8 % of annual recharge).  相似文献

87 samples of granulitic xenoliths scavenged by the Neogene volcanoes in French Massif Central, have been analysed for major elements and Li, Rb, Sr, Ba, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn. These data confirm the presence of rocks with both sedimentary and igneous derivation chemically similar to other granulitic rocks, especially those of the Frazer Range in Australia. Relatively high K and Rb concentration of the metasedimentary rocks conflicts with the hypothesis of systematic depletion of lithophile elements in the lower continental crust.The composition and the elemental variations of the igneous derived rocks suggest a parent magma and a differentiation trend characteristic of tholeiitic rocks. It is proposed that this differentiation was produced at low pressure and consequently, the elemental variation existed before the high pressure granulite facies metamorphism of this series.Although an andesite average of the lower crust (between 25–26 and 12–16 km), directly beneath the Bournac pipe (Velay) is calculated, confirming earlier suggestions of a relatively basic composition but it does not mean that this crust was derived from andesitic rocks.  相似文献
