This study devises a new analytical relationship to determine the porosity of water-saturated soils at shallow depth using seismic compressional and shear wave velocities. Seismic refraction surveys together with soil sample collection were performed in selected areas containing water-saturated clay–silt, sand and gravely soils. Classification of clay–silt, sand and gravel dense soils provided the coefficient of experimental equation between the data sets, namely, Poisson's ratio, shear modulus and porosity values. This study presents a new analytical relationship between Poisson's ratio and shear modulus values, which are obtained from seismic velocities and porosity values of water-saturated material computed from water content and grain densities, which are determined by laboratory analysis of disturbed samples. The analytical relationship between data sets indicates that when the shear modulus of water-saturated loose soil increases, porosity decreases logarithmically. If shear modulus increases in dense or solid saturated soils, porosity decreases linearly. 相似文献

The Denizli region of the Western Anatolia Extensional Province (WAEP) includes a typical example of intra-plate potassic magmatism. Lamproite-like K-rich to shoshonitic alkaline rocks erupted in the Upper Miocene-Pliocene in a tensional tectonic setting. The absence of Nb and Ta depletion, low Th/Zr and high Nb/Zr ratios and distinct isotopic values (i.e. low 87Sr/86Sr, 0.703523–0.703757; high 143Nd/144Nd, 0.512708–0.512784; high 206Pb/204Pb, 19.079–19.227, 207Pb/204Pb, 15.635–15.682, 208Pb/204Pb, 39.144–39.302) mark an anorogenic geochemical signature of the Denizli volcanics. All of the lavas are strongly enriched in large-ion-lithophile elements (e.g. Ba 1,100–2,200 ppm; Sr 1,900–3,100 ppm; Rb 91–295 ppm) and light rare-earth elements (e.g. LaN?=?319–464), with a geochemical affinity to ocean-island basalts and lack of a recognizable subduction signature or any evidence for crustal contamination. The restricted range of isotopic (Sr, Nd, Pb) ratios in both near-primitive (Mg# 66.7–77.2) and more evolved (Mg# 64.6–68.7) members of the Denizli volcanics signify their evolution from an isotopically equilibrated parental mantle source. Their high Dy/Yb and Rb/Sr values also suggest that garnet and phlogopite were present in the mantle source. Their strong EM-II signature, very low Nd model ages (0.44–049 Ga) and isotopic (Sr-Nd-Pb) values analogous to those of the Nyiragongo potassic basanites and kimberlites from the African stable continental settings, suggest that the parental melts that produced the Denizli volcanics are associated with very young and enriched mantle sources, which include both sublithospheric and enriched subcontinental lithospheric mantle melts. Mantle-lithosphere delamination probably played a significant role in the generation of these melts, and could be related to roll-back of the Aegean arc, lithospheric extension and asthenospheric mantle upwelling. 相似文献

Vast marble deposits occur in a cover sequence of the Menderes Massif, SW Turkey. Four major marble deposits are recognized in Mu?la province based on the stratigraphic levels. These are Permo-Carboniferous aged black marbles (1), Triassic aged marbles (2), Upper Cretaceous aged marbles (3), and Paleocene aged pelagic marbles (4). This study deals with Triassic aged marbles of the southern part of the Menderes Massif. The Triassic marbles from SW Turkey consist of two big marble horizons in the Çayboyu (ÇM) and Kestanecik (KM) regions. The characteristic samples are collected from different stratigraphic levels in marble deposits in the ÇM and KM horizons. Mineralogical and major, trace, and rare earth element (REE) analyses of marble, limestone, and schist were conducted on these samples to reveal their petrographical and geochemical characteristics. The ÇM horizon is represented by calcitic marble layers. Nickel, cobalt, manganese, and iron elements filled in fractures, fissures, and intergranular spaces of calcite crystals and these elements give the pinky colour to the marble from the ÇM horizon. KM marbles were deformed, metamorphosed, and recrystallized under greenschist facies P–T conditions. As a result of the metasomatic reaction of magnesium and manganese rich fluids with marbles, dolomite, and manganese, minerals such as rhodochrosite and pyrolusite have crystallized along vein walls and layers in the KM horizon. Dolomitization was determined in KM marbles, whereas ÇM marbles show the character of limestone. MgO, MnO, Fe2O3, Ni, and Zn contents of marbles from the KM horizon are higher than those of ÇM marbles due to metasomatic reactions. The Sr content in white coloured marbles ranges between 11.20 ppm and 112.20 ppm and this concentration reaches up to 272.70 ppm due to metasomatic reactions and fluid intake. The REE content of Triassic marbles is independent of the abundance of carbonate and the REE enrichment observed due to syn-metamorphic fluid flow. The significant negative Eu anomaly in REE patterns indicates that the protoliths of Triassic marbles are carbonate rocks of sedimentary origin. 相似文献

A significant proportion of the urban areas in Turkey is subject to high seismic risk. An important step for seismic risk
mitigation is to define the hazard and damage after an earthquake. This paper proposes an integrated seismic hazard assessment
and disaster management processes for Turkey. The proposed methodology utilizes information technologies in its seismic assessment
component that provides fast results for assessment. First, image process methodology by using satellite images was implemented
in the seismic assessment process for fast evaluation right after an earthquake. Second, the seismic assessment process was
integrated with disaster management process. As a result, through integrated seismic hazard evaluation and disaster management

Geophysical methods, when integrated with soil chemical and hydrogeological methods, can be used to investigate groundwater
contamination. Direct current (DC) resistivity geo-electrical sounding and very-low-frequency electromagnetic (VLF-EM) data
were collected at an open waste site used by the municipality of the city of Isparta, Turkey. The groundwater at shallow depths
in alluvium, which is composed of gravel, sand and clay, were expected to be hazardously contaminated under and around the
open waste-disposal site, in which both household and industrial wastes are known to be disposed of improperly. In this study,
we mapped the spread of groundwater contamination using a VLF-EM method, which allows fast and inexpensive data collection.
The method complements the results of geo-electrical sounding. There is a good correlation between the results of the VLF-EM
and the DC-resistivity methods employed for the investigation of subsurface structure of the site, where soil chemical and
previous hydrogeological surveys have indicated high levels of chemical concentrations.

Multibeam bathymetric data collected in the Strait of Georgia, British Columbia, have revealed two areas of seabed disturbance, interpreted to be faults. The easterly fault zone (Fraser Delta Fault) is demarked by a pockmark chain extending along strike of a southwesterly-dipping fault offset 1 km to the northeast and having a throw of over 50 m. The pockmarks occur in a region of high sedimentation, located in the Fraser River prodelta. The eastern strait fault zone (Porlier Pass Fault) occurs within a fold of the Cretaceous Nanaimo Group. Here, a series of thrust faults displace sediments from Cretaceous to Holocene by up to 40 m with over 2 km of surface expression. Based on Holocene stratigraphic displacement in an area of significant sedimentation, these fault zones are considered to be active. 相似文献
