Abstract   Detailed reviews of metamorphic thermal structures and spatial distributions of granitic rocks in the high- T Higo metamorphic complex (HMC), central Kyushu, Japan, and Ryoke metamorphic complex in the Yanai district (RMC-Y), southwest Japan, reveal that the high-grade metamorphic rocks were associated with migmatites or syn-metamorphic granitoids. The close association of these rocks suggests that transport and solidification of granitic melts are appreciable heat sources. Partial melting of the pelitic host resists heating of the crust due to its endothermic reaction (i.e. absorption of latent heat). However, the effects of slower thermal evolution produced by partial melting are limited by the boundary conditions assumed for the HMC and RMC-Y. New thermal numerical modeling reveals that the volume fraction of the solidified melt products and the duration of melt migration required for crustal heating to a certain temperature decrease with increasing rates of melt migration. The model predicts that the melt migration rate during formation of the HMC is about three to 10 times higher than that of the RMC-Y, and the corresponding duration of melt migration is about one order of magnitude shorter. The model described here also explains the apparently contradictory observations made in different structural units of the RMC-Y: the metamorphic pressure–temperature ( P-T ) ratio of the southern unit is higher than those of the central and northern units, even though the volume fraction of granitic rocks in the southern unit is larger. The model suggests that the melt migration rate in the northern and central units was faster than that in the southern unit. Overall, the model implies that variations of metamorphic field P-T arrays and the spatial distributions of granitic rocks in high- T metamorphic complexes may be explained simply by variations in the rate and duration of melt migration in the hot crust.  相似文献

Concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in beached resin pellets were examined to reveal variability between individual particles and differences among beaches. Fifty-five resin pellets from a beach in Tokyo were individually analyzed for PCBs, and showed concentrations ranging from <28 to 2,300 ng/g. This indicates that concentrations are highly variable between particles. Among several characters, discoloration (e.g., yellowing) had a positive relationship with PCB concentration: discolored pellets contained more PCBs than others on most of the beaches sampled. Given the color-selective ingestion of food by some organisms, this may be ecotoxicologically important. Measurements of samples from 47 beaches in Japan showed regional differences in PCB concentrations in resin pellets consistent with those in mussels. Sporadic high concentrations of PCBs were also found in pellets from remote islands, suggesting that resin pellets could be the dominant route of exposure to the contaminants at remote sites. The similarity of PCB concentrations between resin pellets and mussels suggests a potential use of resin pellets to monitor pollution in seawater.  相似文献

Abstract The chemical Th-U-total Pb isochron method (CHIME) was applied to determine the age of monazite and thorite in five gneisses and zircon in an ultra high-pressure (UHP) phengite schist from the Su-Lu region, eastern China. The CHIME ages and isotopic ages reported in the literature show that gneisses in the Su-Lu region are divided into middle Proterozoic (1500–1720 Ma) and Mesozoic (100–250 Ma) groups. The Proterozoic group includes paragneiss and orthogneiss of the amphibolite-granulite facies, and their protolith age is late Archean-early Proterozoic. The Mesozoic group is mainly composed of orthogneiss of the greenschist-epidote amphibolite facies, and the protolith age is Middle Paleozoic-Early Proterozoic. The Proterozoic and Mesozoic gneisses occupy northern and southern areas of the Su-Lu region, respectively, which are divided by a major Wulian-Qingdao-Yantai fault. Ultra high-pressure metamorphic rocks occur as blocks in the Mesozoic gneisses, and form a UHP complex.
The UHP phengite schist in the Mesozoic orthogneiss contains detrital zircons with late Proterozoic CHIME age ( ca 860 Ma). Age of the UHP metamorphism is late Proterozoic or younger, and protolith age of the UHP metamorphic rocks is probably different from that of the surrounding Mesozoic gneisses.  相似文献

Abstract The Bantimala Complex of South Sulawesi consists mainly of mélange, chert, basalt, ultramafic rocks and high pressure type metamorphic rocks. Well-preserved radiolarians were extracted from 10 samples of chert, and K-Ar age dating was done for muscovite from five samples of schist of the Bantimala Complex. The radiolarian assemblage from chert is assigned middle Cretaceous (late Albian-early Cenomanian) age, while the K-Ar age data from schist range from 132 Ma to 114 Ma except for one sample with rare muscovite. The radiolarian chert is unconformably underlain by schist in the Bantimala Complex. The stratigraphie relationship and the time lag of these two kinds of age data from chert and underlying schist suggest short-time tectonic events immediately followed by a quick waning tectonism in this region during the Albian-Cenomanian transgression.  相似文献

Metamorphism to intermediate-pressure granulite grade had a minimal effect on the geochemistry of layered gneisses in central Australia. The overall composition of the terrain is granodioritic and major element compositions have equivalents in igneous and sedimentary supracrustal rocks. K, Rb, Sr and probably Th concentrations, and K/Rb ratios are normal; the initial isotopic composition of Sr shows the usual range of crustal rocks. However, U is strongly depleted and was lost by a pervasive process, probably dehydration, rather than by anatexis. Comparison with other areas in which major chemical depletions and unusually low initial Sr isotopic ratios are postulated leads to alternative interpretations of these areas which do not involve large scale chemical migration. An intermediate composition for the lower crust may result from a high density of basic intrusions rather than chemical processes.  相似文献

This paper outlines the CHIME (chemical Th–U-total Pb isochron method) dating method, which is based on precise electron microprobe analyses of Th, U and Pb in Th- and U-bearing accessory minerals such as monazite, xenotime, zircon and polycrase. The age-mapping technique that is applicable to young monazite and zircon is also described. CHIME dating consists of analyzing multiple spots within homogeneous age domains that show sufficient compositional variation, and then these data are used to construct a “pseudo-isochron” from which an age can be obtained via regression. This method, when coupled with discrimination of possibly concordant age data by chemical criteria such as the (Ca + Si)/(Th + U + Pb + S) ratio for monazite and Ca and S contents for zircon, has the potential advantage of significant precision, and the ability to work with minerals that have a significant initial common Pb component. This technique can identify two or more homogeneous domains that are separated by age gaps smaller than the error on individual spot age analysis. Many features that are insignificant in major element analysis can have major impact in the acquisition of trace element data. Critical factors include the roles of collimator slit, detector gas, background estimation, accelerating voltage, probe current, X-ray interferences and count rate in affecting the accuracy, and a way to apply the Th and U interference correction without pure Th- and U-oxides or synthesized pure ThSiO4. The age-mapping procedure for young monazite and zircon includes acquiring PbMα (or PbMβ) intensity of individual pixels with multiple spectrometers, correcting background with background maps computed from a measured background intensity by the intensity relationships determined in advance of the measurement, calibrating of intensity with standards and calculating of ages from the Th, U and Pb concentrations. This technique provides age maps that show differences in age domains on the order of 20 Ma with in monazite as young as 100 Ma. The effect of sample damage by irradiation of intense and prolonged probe measurement is also described.  相似文献
