We examined how and why dominant peak-flow runoff-generation mechanisms differ among neighbouring headwater catchments. We monitored runoff and groundwater levels and performed terrain analyses in a granitic second-order catchment and its four neighbouring subcatchments in the Kiryu Experimental Watershed in Japan. Our analysis of lag times from peak rainfall to peak runoff suggests differences in the dominant peak-flow runoff-generation mechanisms among the five catchments. For two of the three zero-order catchments, with few perennial groundwater bodies, subsurface flow from hillslopes was the dominant mechanism at some events. However, the dominant mechanisms were channel precipitation and riparian runoff at almost all events in first- and second-order catchments and in the third zero-order catchment, which has a large perennial groundwater body over a bedrock depression in the riparian zone. In this zero-order catchment, the quick-flow ratio was the smallest of the five catchments because subsurface flow from the hillslope was buffered at the riparian zone. These facts suggest that the channel length, riparian buffering, and hillslope connectivity were the factors governing the different dominant peak-flow runoff-generation mechanisms among the catchments. Riparian buffering was affected, not only by surface topography, but also by bedrock topography and bedrock groundwater (BGW) dynamics. Our findings indicate that both of BGW dynamics and topography are important for catchment classification, and the relative importance of topography increases with the change from baseflow to stormflow. Furthermore, mismatching between a geographic source and a flow path resulted in different catchment classifications depending on the approach. Therefore, multiple approaches during both baseflow and stormflow periods are necessary for catchment classification to apply information obtained from one headwater catchment to other headwater catchments within the same region. 相似文献

Basing upon the total of 1,081 samples collected by a large plankton net (160 cm in mouth diameter) in the Pacific Ocean, the geographical and vertical distribution ofGonostoma gracile were studied. The species is distributed in the water masses of the Kuroshio, the Kuroshio Extension, the North Pacific Current, the Oyashio, the North Pacific Subarctic Water and the western North Pacific Central Water. The center of distribution lies in the Kuroshio area off Japan. Vertically, the species occurs between the depths of 200 and 1,000 m, mainly 300–700 m, both during daytime and at night. A part of population might come up to 0–200 m at night, although its biomass is negligibly small in comparison to that remaining in 300–700 m layer. Postlarvae are found in 300–700 m layer, mainly at 300–500 m, and apparently do not undertake diurnal vertical migration. 相似文献

A numerical ecosystem model expressing both phosphorus and nitrogen cyclings in the pelagic system of Hiroshima Bay, Japan,
was developed in order to investigate the seasonal variations of these elements and their annual budgets. Based on the geophysical
and chemical structures of the bay, Hiroshima Bay was divided into northern and southern boxes, themselves divided into two
layers of an upper 5 m and a lower layer according to the stratification of the water column. The model consists of equations
representing all relevant physical and biological processes. The results revealed that the internal regeneration of materials
was an important source of bioavailable nutrients for phytoplankton growth in the water column. The incorporation of phytoplankton
aggregation improved the accuracy of the outputs in comparison to the observed data, especially during the stratified summer
season. The results also indicated that phosphorus limitation of phytoplankton growth occurs in the upper layer during summer
while light limitation occurs in the lower layer. In addition, physical processes such as diffusion and advection were also
important as they ensured that most of regenerated nutrients in the lower layer were transported to the upper layer. Thus,
these processes might support the high primary production and the production of oysters that are extensively cultured in this
bay. Considering the informative results obtained, the model used in this study provides a sound basis and tool to describe

A simplified method of numerical analysis has been developed to estimate the deformation and load distribution of piled raft foundations subjected to ground movements induced by tunnelling and incorporated into a computer program ‘PRAB’. In this method, a hybrid model is employed in which the flexible raft is modelled as thin plates, the piles as elastic beams, and the soil is treated as interactive springs. The interactions between structural members, pile–soil–pile, pile–soil–raft and raft–soil–raft interactions, are modelled based on Mindlin's solutions for both vertical and lateral forces. The validity of the proposed method is verified through comparisons with some published solutions for single piles and pile groups subjected to ground movements induced by tunnelling. Thereafter, the solutions from this approach for the analysis of a pile group and a piled raft subjected to ground movements induced by tunnelling are compared with those from three‐dimensional finite difference program. Good agreements between these solutions are demonstrated. Biological and physical surveys were conducted in order to investigate the relationship between environmental conditions and the distribution of moon jellyfish Aurelia aurita in Hiroshima Bay, western Seto Inland Sea, Japan. Moon jellyfish and ichthyoplankton were collected at 13 stations in Hiroshima Bay during monthly surveys from July to September in 2006 and 2007. Surface temperature in 2006 was significantly lower during the August and September cruises and surface salinity was lower during all cruises than in 2007. Moon jellyfish was the most dominant gelatinous plankton collected, accounting for 89.7% in wet weight. Mean moon jellyfish abundance in 2006 was higher than that in 2007 from July through September, with significant inter-year differences for July and September. Variability in precipitation and nutritional input from the Ohta River, northernmost part of Hiroshima Bay, were suggested as possible factors affecting the inter-annual variability in moon jellyfish abundance in the coastal areas of northern Hiroshima Bay. Moon jellyfish were more abundant in the coastal areas of northern Hiroshima Bay, where the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration was lower, while low in the central part of the bay. Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus eggs were most dominant (58.1% in number) among the ichthyoplankton and were abundant in the central area of Hiroshima Bay. Explanatory analysis was conducted to detect possible effects of environmental conditions on the abundance of moon jellyfish and Japanese anchovy eggs during the summer months in Hiroshima Bay. Of the environmental conditions tested (temperature, salinity and DO of surface and bottom layers at each sampling station), bottom DO had the most significant effect on the moon jellyfish abundance: there was a negative correlation between the bottom DO and the moon jellyfish abundance in Hiroshima Bay during summer. 相似文献

A velocity field is found to occur prior to the birth of sunspots or during the rapidly developing phase of new spots. Fraunhofer lines are always shifted redwards in the observed active regions which are situated at various distances from the disk center. The velocity amplitude derived from Na i D1-line, 5895.940, amounts to, at maximum, 1.5 km s–1 which is always a little larger than that derived from the weaker line, NI i 5892.883. The velocity field disappears when the spot ceases to grow. The lifetime of the velocity is, at least, 1 hr. The velocity field is interpreted in terms of the continuous downward flow in the process of formation of sunspots.Bray and Loughhead (1964) regard the disturbance in the granulation pattern accompanying the birth and growth of sunspot pores as an evidence of the existence of rising loops of magnetic flux. In view of the similarity of the phase of development of active regions and the lifetime in the observations by Bray and Loughhead and by us, we suggest that the velocity field may be a spectroscopic feature accompanying the rising magnetic loops in the photosphere and the chromosphere.
