In the light of a recent discussion by Gerassimenko and Nolte (1978) we re-examine the use of the filter ratio method for determining the thermodynamic parameters of coronal plasmas. We conclude that the method gives reliable results only when the observed plasma is nearly isothermal and that presently available data do not demonstrate that active region plasmas generally meet this condition. 相似文献

Determining optimal well placement and control is essential to maximizing production from an oil field. Most academic literature to date has treated optimal placement and control as two separate problems; well placement problems, in particular, are often solved assuming some fixed flow rate or bottom-hole pressure at injection and production wells. Optimal placement of wells, however, does depend on the control strategy being employed. Determining a truly optimal configuration of wells thus requires that the control parameters be allowed to vary as well. This presents a challenging optimization problem, since well location and control parameters have different properties from one another. In this paper, we address the placement and control optimization problem jointly using approaches that combine a global search strategy (particle swarm optimization, or PSO) with a local generalized pattern search (GPS) strategy. Using PSO promotes a full, semi-random exploration of the search space, while GPS allows us to locally optimize parameters in a systematic way. We focus primarily on two approaches combining these two algorithms. The first is to hybridize them into a single algorithm that acts on all variables simultaneously, while the second is to apply them sequentially to decoupled well placement and well control problems. We find that although the best method for a given problem is context-specific, decoupling the problem may provide benefits over a fully simultaneous approach. 相似文献

We apply an established statistical methodology called history matching to constrain the parameter space of a coupled non-flux-adjusted climate model (the third Hadley Centre Climate Model; HadCM3) by using a 10,000-member perturbed physics ensemble and observational metrics. History matching uses emulators (fast statistical representations of climate models that include a measure of uncertainty in the prediction of climate model output) to rule out regions of the parameter space of the climate model that are inconsistent with physical observations given the relevant uncertainties. Our methods rule out about half of the parameter space of the climate model even though we only use a small number of historical observations. We explore 2 dimensional projections of the remaining space and observe a region whose shape mainly depends on parameters controlling cloud processes and one ocean mixing parameter. We find that global mean surface air temperature (SAT) is the dominant constraint of those used, and that the others provide little further constraint after matching to SAT. The Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) has a non linear relationship with SAT and is not a good proxy for the meridional heat transport in the unconstrained parameter space, but these relationships are linear in our reduced space. We find that the transient response of the AMOC to idealised CO2 forcing at 1 and 2 % per year shows a greater average reduction in strength in the constrained parameter space than in the unconstrained space. We test extended ranges of a number of parameters of HadCM3 and discover that no part of the extended ranges can by ruled out using any of our constraints. Constraining parameter space using easy to emulate observational metrics prior to analysis of more complex processes is an important and powerful tool. It can remove complex and irrelevant behaviour in unrealistic parts of parameter space, allowing the processes in question to be more easily studied or emulated, perhaps as a precursor to the application of further relevant constraints. 相似文献

CLIMATOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION OF SEVERE WIND-DRIVEN RAIN EVENTS AFFECTING THE SOUTHERN UNITED STATES
This paper follows recent studies of wind-driven rain (WDR), and statistically defines a “severe” WDR event. The research suggests a classification for severe WDR events by association with larger-scale weather systems. The study incorporates data for the period 1971 to 1995 and, from these data, the analysis reveals that severe WDR events are confined mainly to the southern United States and occur most frequently in the cold and transition seasons. Extratropical cyclones are the most common synoptic-scale weather systems associated with severe WDR events. Extratropical cyclones originating in three areas accounted for more than 70 percent of the severe events in the study. The cyclone types are referred to as Colorado Lows (CLs), Gulf Lows (GLs), and Texas Lows (TLs). The attendant synoptic-scale conditions of cyclones that produced severe WDR events differ significantly from extratropical cyclones originating in similar areas but not producing severe events. Key differences between the two cyclone populations are the cyclone track trajectories and the low and midlevel synoptic environments promoting cyclone intensification. A conceptual framework for climate change assessments of international market systems that involve long-term investments is proposed. The framework is a hybrid of dynamic and static modeling. Dynamic modeling is used for those system components for which temporally continuous modeling is possible, while fixed time slices are used for other system components where it can be assumed that underlying assumptions are held constant within the time slices but allowed to vary between slices. An important component of the framework is the assessment of the “metauncertainty” arising from the structural uncertainties of a linked sequence of climate, production, trade and decision-making models. The impetus for proposing the framework is the paucity of industry-wide assessments for market systems with multiple production regions and long-term capital investments that are vulnerable to climate variations and change, especially climate extremes. The proposed framework is pragmatic, eschewing the ideal for the tractable. Even so, numerous implementation challenges are expected, which are illustrated using an example industry. The conceptual framework is offered as a starting point for further discussions of strategies and approaches for climate change impact, vulnerability and adaptation assessments for international market systems. 相似文献

A bloom of the green microalga Tetraselmis sp. in a small lagoon in Wellington Harbour, New Zealand, is considered to have caused a fish kill of pilchards (Sardinops sagax). The frequency versus wave number characteristics of four O(ΔS2) finite difference formulations for one-dimensional linear shell (ring and axisymmetric) equations are investigated and compared with the exact continuum characteristics. It is found that three of the formulations give virtually identical results. These are half-spacing techniques with equilibrium in terms of displacements or resultants and whole-spacing with equilibrium in terms of displacements. The formulation based on whole-spacing with equilibrium in terms of resultants produces some dramatically different results. These discrepancies partially explain some late time instability problems and critical time step behaviour that have been reported by other investigators. 相似文献

The Goddard Space Flight Center instrument carried on the pointed section of the OSO-7 satellite is described. This instrument contains: An extreme ultraviolet spectroheliograph using glancing incidence optics of Wolter's Type II to focus the Sun's light on the entrance slit of a concave grating spectrometer; an auxiliary H system; two X-ray spectroheliographs using mechanical collimators for spatial resolution and Ross filters to isolate spectral bands of interest, and a flare polarimeter operating in the 15–40 keV X-ray region. These subsystems may be operated in a number of modes which, when combined with the spacecraft modes, give the instrument great flexibility for making solar observations.
