A preliminary discussion is presented of measurements of the polarization of the He i D3 multiplet in a quiescent prominence, observed with a wavelength-scanning Stokes polarimeter. For a series of 43 observations in the same prominence, the linear polarization of the major component of D3 lies primarily in the range 1 to 2% and of the wing component, the range 2 to 5%; the polarization vector angle lies primarily in the range 10–25° for the major component, and 25–35° for the other component. From a more limited data set, the polarization of both components is found to first increase as a function of height in the prominence, and then to decrease; the polarization angles of the major component vary in a random-like way with height, while the wing component shows a systematic change. The amount of polarization and the angle of polarization are governed by the Hanle effect. The collective effect of the group of lines at the peak of D3 evidently has a different sensitivity to the Hanle effect than does the wing component, thus yielding at least four independent measurements - two polarizations and two angles. With some redundancy, the vector magnetic field can then be established using the detailed theory of the Hanle effect. Since the wing component of D3 is a simple triplet, an initial estimate of the magnetic field strength and its horizontal orientation, 0, relative to the line of sight, is simply obtained. The relative environmental toxicities of synthetic and biogenic surfactants used in oil spill remediation efforts are not well understood. Acute and chronic toxicities of three synthetic surfactants and three microbiologically produced surfactants were determined and compared in this study for the estuarine epibenthic invertebrate, Mysidopsis bahia and the inland silverside, Menidia beryllina. The toxicities of the surfactant were determined in standard laboratory static and static-renewal tests of 4-7 d duration. Results were specific to the surfactant, response parameter and test species. The LC50 values (nominal concentrations) for M. bahia ranged from 3.3 mg/l (Triton X-100) to >1000 mg/l (PES-61) and 2.5 mg/l (Triton X-100) to 413.6 mg/l (PES-61) for M. beryllina. Chronic first-effect concentrations (mg/l) for the six surfactants ranged from 2.3 to 465.0 (M. beryllina) and 1.0 to >1000.0 (M. bahia) based on reductions in growth and fecundity. Few generalizations could be made concerning the results due to their variability but M. bahia was generally the more sensitive species and the toxicities of the biosurfactants were intermediate to those of the synthetic surfactants.  相似文献

Recent archaeological discoveries from exposures of the Cromer Forest-bed Formation at Happisburgh, UK, have radically changed interpretations of the nature and timing of early hominin occupation of northern latitudes, but this in situ archaeology is only one part of the picture. Surface finds of Pleistocene mammalian remains have been found along this coastline for centuries, with stone tools adding to this record over the past 7 years. The ex situ nature of these finds, however, means they are often seen as limited in the information they can provide. This work contributes to a growing body of research from a range of landscape and environmental contexts that seeks to demonstrate the value and importance of these ex situ assemblages. Here the focus is on Palaeolithic flint artefacts and Pleistocene mammalian remains recovered by a group of local collectors through systematic, GPS-recorded beach collection from 2013 to 2017, and their use in developing a methodology for working with ex situ Palaeolithic finds in coastal locations. The results demonstrate significant patterning that identifies unexplored exposures both onshore and offshore, considerably expanding the known extent of deposits and facilitating new insights into the wider archaeological landscape associated with the earliest occupation of northern Europe.  相似文献

The Natural Forest Protection(NFP) program is one of the Six Key Forestry Projects which were adopted by the Chinese Government since the 1980s to address important natural issues in China. It advanced to protecting and restoring the structures and functions of the natural forests through sustainable forest management. However, the role of forest carbon storage and tree carbon pool dynamics since the adoption of the NFP remains unknown. To address this knowledge gap, this study calculated forest carbon storage(tree, understory, forest floor and soil) in the forest region of northeastern(NE) China based on National Forest Inventory databases and field investigated databases. For tree biomass, this study utilized an improved method for biomass estimation that converts timber volume to total forest biomass; while for understory, forest floor and soil carbon storage, this study utilized forest type-specific mean carbon densities multiplied by their areas in the region. Results showed that the tree carbon pool under the NFP in NE China functioned as a carbon sink from 1998 to 2008, with an increase of 6.3 Tg C/yr, which was mainly sequestrated by natural forests(5.1 Tg C/yr). At the same time, plantations also acted as a carbon sink, reflecting an increase of 1.2 Tg C/yr. In 2008, total carbon storage in forests covered by the NFP in NE China was 4603.8 Tg C, of which 4393.3 Tg C was stored in natural forests and 210.5 Tg C in planted forests. Soil was the largest carbon storage component, contributing 69.5%–77.8% of total carbon storage; followed by tree and forest floor, accounting for 16.3%–23.0% and 5.0%–6.5% of total carbon storage, respectively. Understory carbon pool ranged from 1.9 to 42.7 Tg C, accounting for only 0.9% of total carbon storage.  相似文献

We use linear stability analysis to approximate the axisymmetric to nonaxisymmetric transition in the differentially heated rotating annulus. We study an accurate mathematical model that uses the Navier–Stokes equations in the Boussinesq approximation. The steady axisymmetric solution satisfies a two-dimensional partial differential boundary value problem. It is not possible to compute the solution analytically, and thus, numerical methods are used. The eigenvalues are also given by a two-dimensional partial differential problem, and are approximated using the matrix eigenvalue problem that results from discretizing the linear part of the appropriate equations.

A comparison is made with experimental results. It is shown that the predictions using linear stability analysis accurately reproduce many of the experimental observations. Of particular interest is that the analysis predicts cusping of the axisymmetric to nonaxisymmetric transition curve at wave number transitions, and the wave number maximum along the lower part of the axisymmetric to nonaxisymmetric transition curve is accurately determined. The correspondence between theoretical and experimental results validates the numerical approximations as well as the application of linear stability analysis.

A linear stability analysis is also performed with the effects of centrifugal buoyancy neglected. Along the lower part of the transition curve, the results are significantly qualitatively and quantitatively different than when the centrifugal effects are considered. In particular, the results indicate that the centrifugal buoyancy is the cause of the observation of a wave number maximum along the transition curve, and is the cause of a change in concavity of the transition curve.  相似文献
