The incorporation of heat exchangers in geostructures changes the temperature of the adjacent soil, raising important issues concerning the effect of temperature variations on hydro-mechanical soil behaviour. The objective of this paper is to improve the understanding and quantification of the impact of temperature variation on the bearing capacity of thermo-active piles. Currently, the design of deep foundations is based on the results of in situ penetrometer or pressuremeter tests. However, there are no published data on the effect of temperature on in situ soil parameters, preventing the specific assessment of the behaviour of thermo-active piles. In this study, an experimental device is developed to perform mini-pressuremeter tests under controlled laboratory conditions. Mini-pressuremeter tests are performed on an illitic soil in a thermo-regulated metre-scale container subjected to temperatures from 1 to 40 °C. The results reveal a slight decrease in the pressuremeter modulus (E p) and a significant decrease in the creep pressure (p f) and limit pressure (p l) with increasing temperature. The results also reveal the reversibility of this effect during a heating–cooling cycle throughout the investigated temperature range, whereas the effect of a cooling–heating cycle was only partially reversible. In the case of several thermal cycles, the effect of the first cycle on the soil parameters is decisive.  相似文献

The installation cost and the performance of geothermal heat pump systems are influenced by the thermal state and properties of the subsurface. The ground ability to transfer heat described by thermal conductivity is a dominant factor affecting the favorability of closed-loop ground heat exchangers installed in vertical boreholes. A study that aimed at evaluating the geothermal heat pump potential by mapping the thermal conductivity of rock sequences was, therefore, performed for the St. Lawrence Lowlands sedimentary basin in Canada. Thermal conductivity was measured in the laboratory on rock samples collected in outcrops and used to complete design calculations of a geothermal system with a single borehole. Results allowed the definition of thermostratigraphic units that can be linked to depositional environments. Basal quartz-rich sandstones formed in a rift environment show a high geothermal potential. Overlying dolomites, argillaceous limestones and shales deposited in a passive margin evolving to a foreland basin exhibit a transition toward the top from high to low geothermal potential. Upper turbidites and molasses have a moderate geothermal potential. The thermal conductivity of the thermostratigraphic units is dominantly influenced by the mineralogy of the sedimentary rocks. Understanding their origin is a key to improve geothermal resource assessment and system design to anticipate new installations in the area.  相似文献

The rapid urbanization and industrialization of the Manouba plain (Northeastern Tunisia), the extensive agricultural expansion and the succession of dry years during recent decades have exerted greatly load on the water needs and lead to groundwater quality degradation. The aim of this study is to evaluate the processes controlling the groundwater mineralization of the shallow aquifer for determining its suitability for drinking and agricultural purposes. For establishing that, we combine several geological, hydrological and hydrochemical data with geostatistical techniques. The samples were collected at 17 sites covering 230 km2 of the study area and analyzed for major and trace components. The total dissolved solid (TDS) content ranges from 1372 to 3999 mg/l. The results of Piper diagram indicate that Na+/Cl? and Ca2+?>?Na+/SO4 2? were the main dominant water types localized in the sloping sides of the watershed and near the saline depression; the suitability for irrigation use was also evaluated. The high concentrations of nitrates and chlorides are indicators of anthropogenic pollution, like the agricultural over application of nitrogen fertilizers and the discharge of domestic and industrial wastewater. Saturation indexes calculated by using PHREEQC (USGS) program show that groundwaters are undersaturated with evaporitic minerals (halite, gypsum) and saturated with carbonates (calcite, aragonite). The use of principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis has shown that two main factors accounting 67.13% of the information of variability within the dataset confirm the existence of dissolution of evaporitic minerals and the mechanisms of nitrate increasing the salinity of the Manouba groundwater.  相似文献

In this study, a comprehensive assessment on the generation mechanism, distribution characteristics, and extension rules of structure cracks was conducted by in situ monitoring and field investigation in the Chengchao Iron Mine. Structure cracks are affected by many factors, e.g., surface deformation, structure strength, occurrence position, and machine vibration. They initially occur in a structure when the strength of the structure is not enough to resist the inner strain as surface deformation increases. In contrast, increases in width and length of structure crack exert stress release in the structure and thus decrease structure deformation surrounding the crack. A great ground crack may adversely aggravate structure cracking and release the stress of surrounding rock masses. In addition, micro cracks in rock masses provide favorable conditions for the generation and extension of cracks, resulting that cracks occur in shaft walls more easily and extend towards the deeper. The initial distribution of cracks is generally consistent with such micro cracks. Subsequently, cracks in deep rock masses will extend along the strike of the mined-out area as surface deformation increases. Sensibilities to cracking of structures are changed by their different strain resistances and become stronger from bolt-shotcrete shaft, bolt-shotcrete tunnel, and brick-concrete building to brick wall. Based on distribution characteristics of cracks and wave velocity in rock masses, the overlaying strata affected by underground mining can be divided into four zones: broken zone, broken transition zone, crack generation zone, and micro deformation zone.  相似文献

The design code for each country is revised and updated based on an expected zone’s seismic intensities,geotechnical site classifications,structural systems,construction materials and methods of construction in order to provide more realistic considerations of seismic demand,seismic response,and seismic capacity.Based on the aforementioned provisions,structures designed according to different seismic codes may yield different performances for the same level of hazard.This study aims to investigate and compare the induced responses related to the earthquake-resistant design of reinforced concrete(RC)buildings according to the Saudi building code(SBC-301),American code(ASCE-7),uniform building code(UBC-97),and European code(EC-8).In order to account for the provision regarding the hazard specification and its effect on the induced seismic responses,four regions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with different seismic levels are selected.The code provisions related to the specification of site classification and its effect on the induced design base shear are investigated as well.Significant differences are observed in the induced responses with the variation in seismic design codes for the considered seismic hazards and site classifications.  相似文献

Design flood estimation in ungauged catchments is of great importance in hydrologic practice especially where there is no available data about streamflow. Except the watershed of Anseghmir who is equipped with a gauge station, all the other watersheds are ungauged catchments. The use of frequency analysis of series of rainfall and streamflow is very important for the characterization of the hydrologic resources of the Upper Moulouya. The region has a semiarid climate that requires a good knowledge of the watershed's potential water to assist policy makers in forecasting extreme events, managing water resources and decision making. The frequency analysis was used to determine the design flood of different return periods. The results obtained are used in Gradex method to estimate the hydrologic variables of each subcatchment of the Upper Moulouya. Once the hydrologic study is completed, a principal components analysis was made to highlight the affinities between the different subcatchments and to deduce the hydrologic and hydrographic parameters that better characterize them. Reliable dating of glaciomarine sediments deposited on the Antarctic shelf since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) is challenging because of the rarity of calcareous (micro‐) fossils and the recycling of fossil organic matter. Consequently, radiocarbon (14C) ages of the acid‐insoluble organic fraction (AIO) of the sediments bear uncertainties that are difficult to quantify. Here we present the results of three different methods to date a sedimentary unit consisting of diatomaceous ooze and diatomaceous mud that was deposited following the last deglaciation at five core sites on the inner shelf in the western Amundsen Sea (West Antarctica). In three cores conventional 14C dating of the AIO in bulk samples yielded age reversals down‐core, but at all sites the AIO 14C ages obtained from diatomaceous ooze within the diatom‐rich unit yielded similar uncorrected 14C ages between 13 517 ± 56 and 11 543 ± 47 years before present (a BP). Correction of these ages by subtracting the core‐top ages, which probably reflect present‐day deposition (as indicated by 210Pb dating of the sediment surface at one core site), yielded ages between ca. 10 500 and 8400 cal. a BP. Correction of the AIO ages of the diatomaceous ooze by only subtracting the marine reservoir effect (MRE) of 1300 a indicated deposition of the diatom‐rich sediments between 14 100 and 11 900 cal. a BP. Most of these ages are consistent with age constraints between 13.0 and 8.0 ka for the diatom‐rich unit, which we obtained by correlating the relative palaeomagnetic intensity (RPI) records of three of the sediment cores with global and regional reference curves. As a third dating technique we applied conventional radiocarbon dating of the AIO included in acid‐cleaned diatom hard parts extracted from the diatomaceous ooze. This method yielded uncorrected 14C ages of only 5111 ± 38 and 5106 ± 38 a BP, respectively. We reject these young ages, because they are likely to be overprinted by the adsorption of modern atmospheric carbon dioxide onto the surfaces of the diatom hard parts prior to sample graphitisation and combustion for 14C dating. The deposition of the diatom‐rich unit in the western Amundsen Sea suggests deglaciation of the inner shelf before ca. 13 ka BP. The deposition of diatomaceous oozes elsewhere on the Antarctic shelf around the same time, however, seems to be coincidental rather than directly related. The time domain electromagnetic method (TDEM) is applied to monitor, to delineate and to map the saltwater intrusion zones in the Mediterranean Plio‐Quaternary aquifer. Forty‐two TDEM soundings were carried out in the coastal plain of Nabeul–Hammamet region (NE Tunisia). TDEM resistivity data were correlated with the existing borehole logging data to assign them to a particular lithology and to provide information about the position of the freshwater–seawater transition zone. The geoelectric sections showing the vertical configuration of seawater intrusion, with the brackish‐salty‐saturated zones, have a resistivity ranging from ~0.1 to 5 Ω?m and are detected at a depth lower than 1.5 m. The salinized zones are located at Nabeul (Sidi Moussa, Sidi El Mahrsi, Al Gasba and Mrazgua) and at Hammamet (Touristic zone of Hammamet north and south, Baraket Essahel) and reached a distance of 4 km from the coastline, indicating a severe state for the aquifer in these zones. These TDEM results are confirmed by the increase of chloride concentration content in the analysed water samples of monitoring wells. Moreover, in the northeastern part, the presence of a saltwater front located far from the coast and along the NW–SE major surface fault can be explained by two hypothesis: (i) this fault seems to provide a conduit for seawater to move readily towards the water wells and (ii) the clay and gypsum infiltration of marine Messinian deposits through the fault plane leads to low resistivities.
