Since the early 1980s, the Dead Sea coast has undergone a near catastrophic land deterioration as a result of a rapid lake-level
drop. One conspicuous expression of this deterioration is the formation of sinkholes fields that puncture the coastal plains.
The evolution of sinkholes along nearly 70-km strip has brought to a halt the regional development in this well-known and
toured area and destroyed existing infrastructures. Great efforts are being invested in understanding the phenomena and in
development of monitoring techniques. We report in this paper the application of airborne laser scanning for characterization
of sinkholes. We demonstrate first the appropriateness of laser scanning for this task and its ability to provide detailed
3D information on this phenomenon. We describe then an autonomous means for their extraction over large regions and with high
level of accuracy. Extraction is followed by their detailed geometric characterization. Using this high-resolution data, we
show how sinkholes of 0.5 m radius and 25 cm depth can be detected from airborne platforms as well as the geomorphic features
surrounding them. These sinkhole measures account for their embryonic stage, allowing tracking them at an early phase of their

Recent studies have shown that genotyping preserved plankton DNA in marine and lacustrine sediment records using ancient DNA methods is a promising approach for refining paleoenvironmental information. However, the extent to which the preservation of fossil plankton DNA differs between species is poorly understood. Using a continuous 2700 year sediment record from Watts Basin in Ellis Fjord (Antarctica), we compared the level of preservation of fossil DNA derived from important plankton members with varying cellular architecture. The amount of preserved small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA; ca. 500 base pair fragments) of dinoflagellates (as extracellular DNA rather than as preserved cysts) that could be amplified by way of PCR declined up to five orders of magnitude with increasing sediment depth and age. In contrast, the amount of similar-sized, PCR-amplifiable, diatom SSU rDNA (predominantly from a cyst-forming Chaetoceros sp.) declined only up to tenfold over 2700 years of deposition. No obvious decline in copy numbers with increasing sediment age was observed for similar-sized SSU rDNA of past chemocline-associated photosynthetic green sulfur bacteria (GSB), which do not have a protective resting stage. In good agreement with the quantitative data, the extent of post-depositional natural degradation to fragments too small to serve as a template for the quantitative PCR assays was greatest for dinoflagellates and lowest for GSB. An increase in the ratio between GSB-derived DNA and intact carotenoids with sediment depth implies that short GSB DNA fragments were better preserved than intact carotenoids and provide a more accurate view into paleoproductivity and the sediment flux of GSB in Watts Basin. We discuss the possible causes behind the variation in the level of DNA preservation among the plankton groups investigated, as well as consequences for the use of using fossil DNA records in paleoecology studies. 相似文献

The colonisation of the terrestrial environment by crustaceans is more apparent in tropical latitudes because of the high diversity of semi‐terrestrial and terrestrial crabs. However, in temperate regions there are also great numbers of crustaceans that inhabit ecological niches at the water–air interface. Grapsidae crabs (Decopoda) are especially important in studies of water‐to‐land transition as the family contains species occupying the intertidal and adjacent regions. A way to evaluate the ability of intertidal invertebrates to breathe air is to measure the aerial/aquatic oxygen consumption ratio. The objective of this study was to test the effect of thermal variation on the aquatic and aerial metabolism. We selected as study model the decopoda crab Cyclograpsus cinereus Dana and utilised five populations of the species spread over 2000 km along the Chilean coast. To determine the compensation capacity in respiration with respect to latitude, we evaluated metabolic rate at the same temperature in a common garden design in the laboratory, to examine the extent to which variation in crab physiology is environmentally determined. Whereas in our study, mb (body mass) varied significantly with latitude, the difference in mass‐independent metabolism both in air and water persisted, indicating that observed differences in MR (Metabolic Rate) were not an effect of differences in body size. We demonstrated that C. cinereus is able to breath oxygen from air and water as expected for an amphibious crab. Almost all the studied populations of C. cinereus show a aerial/aquatic metabolism ratio near 1. The pattern found indicates an increase in metabolic rate, both aerial and aquatic, in low latitudes and therefore does not support the latitudinal compensation hypothesis for temperate habitats. Finally, these kinds of studies are required to make the necessary link between ecological physiology and macroecology and to help develop a global understanding of organismal function in marine systems. 相似文献

We performed geodetic strain rate analyses in southern Italy, using new GPS velocities. Two-dimensional strain and rotation
rate fields were estimated and results show that most of the shortening is distributed in the northern Sicily offshore. Extension
becomes more evident and comparable with shortening on the eastern side of the same margin, and greater in the eastern Sicily
offshore. Principal shortening and extension rate axes are consistent with long-term geological features: seismic reflection
profiles show both active compressive and extensional faults affecting Pleistocene strata. We show evidence for contemporaneous
extension and transtension in the Cefalù Basin. Combining geodetic data and geological features point to the coexistence of
independent geodynamic processes, i.e., the active E–W backarc spreading in the hangingwall of the Apennines subduction zone
and shortening along the southern margin of the Tyrrhenian backarc basin operated by the NNW-motion of Africa relative to

The Triassic succession of the central Southern Alps (Italy) is stacked into several units bounded by south-verging low-angle
thrust faults, which are related to two successive steps of crustal shortening. The thrust surfaces are cut by high-angle
extensional and strike-slip faults, which controlled the emplacement of hypabissal magmatic intrusions that post-date thrusts
motions. Intrusion ages based on SHRIMP U–Pb zircon dating span between 42 ± 1 and 39 ± 1 Ma, suggesting close time relationships
with the earliest Adamello intrusion stages and, more in general, with the widespread calc-alkaline magmatism described in
the Southern Alps. Fission-track ages of magmatic apatites are indistinguishable from U–Pb crystallization ages of zircons,
suggesting that the intrusion occurred in country rocks already exhumed above the partial annealing zone of apatite (depth < 2–4 km).
These data indicate that the central Southern Alps were already structured and largely exhumed in the Middle Eocene. Although
we describe minor faults affecting magmatic bodies and local reactivations of older structures, no major internal deformations
have occurred in the area after the Bartonian. Neogene deformations were instead concentrated farther south, along the frontal

Slope stabilization in difficult conditions: the case study of a debris slide in NW Italian Alps 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
A case study of a debris slide (estimated volume of about 35,000 m3) is described in this paper. This slide occurred in April 2009 in the North Western Italian Alps (Aosta valley) and damaged the SR25 road along the Valgrisenche valley. Ground investigations started with severe safety and logistic issues being posed. Given the need to open as soon as possible the road, the design of the landslide stabilization works was carried out using a “design as you go” approach. The stabilization measures were conceived to be flexible in order to allow for changes and integration during construction, in line with the progressive refinement of the geological–geotechnical slope model being developed. Back analysis by means of the limit equilibrium method (LEM) and the finite element method (FEM) was used. Groundwater level rise following heavy rainfall and spring snow melting was found to be the main cause of the debris slide. The stabilization works were designed by using both the LEM and FEM methods. The stability conditions of the engineered slope were assessed based on the available performance monitoring data. 相似文献

The Large Observatory For X-ray Timing (LOFT), currently in an assessment phase in the framework the ESA M3 Cosmic Vision programme, is an innovative medium-class mission specifically designed to answer fundamental questions about the behaviour of matter, in the very strong gravitational and magnetic fields around compact objects and in supranuclear density conditions. Having an effective area of ~10 m2 at 8 keV, LOFT will be able to measure with high sensitivity very fast variability in the X-ray fluxes and spectra. A good knowledge of the in-orbit background environment is essential to assess the scientific performance of the mission and optimize the design of its main instrument, the Large Area Detector (LAD). In this paper the results of an extensive Geant-4 simulation of the instrumentwillbe discussed, showing the main contributions to the background and the design solutions for its reduction and control. Our results show that the current LOFT/LAD design is expected to meet its scientific requirement of a background rate equivalent to 10 mCrab in 2?30 keV, achieving about 5 mCrab in the most important 2–10 keV energy band. Moreover, simulations show an anticipated modulation of the background rate as small as 10 % over the orbital timescale. The intrinsic photonic origin of the largest background component also allows for an efficient modelling, supported by an in-flight active monitoring, allowing to predict systematic residuals significantly better than the requirement of 1 %, and actually meeting the 0.25 % science goal. 相似文献

In contrast to coded-mask instruments, both crystal diffraction lenses and grazing angle mirrors offer a possibility to construct a sensitive instrument to detect γ-ray lines in supernovae.
