We investigate helicopter electromagnetic (HEM) inversion schemes applied to synthetic and measured HEM sea ice profiling data. Direct HEM data-to-ice-thickness inversion is compared to three different formal, least squares layered earth inversion algorithms.By making several approximations, it is possible to directly invert a single channel measurement (i.e., the in-phase or quadrature component of a single frequency measurement) to obtain an estimate of sea ice thickness. Measurements from multiple input channels, however, can be used in a layered earth inversion to simultaneously recover several model parameters such as sea ice thickness, sea ice conductivity and sub-ice bathymetry. Synthetic data sets for a particular two-frequency HEM system showed that simple least squares inversion algorithms produce reliable estimates of sea ice thickness in cases where the ice is thicker than 3 m. These methods could also recover acceptable estimates of sea ice thickness when a thin, conductive, partially melted sea ice layer was present, and could determine shallow, sub-ice bathymetry in brackish water. As expected, 1D transformations and inversions of synthetic data for a three-dimensional pressure ridge keel structure contained artifacts, notably broadening of the apparent width of the keel.Prior to inverting a field data set acquired over rather thin (~ 0.5 m) Antarctic sea ice, we found it necessary to recalibrate the phase angle of the measurements using a phasor diagram-based method. Direct transformation of a single channel from the recalibrated data set produced more accurate estimates of sea-ice thickness than formal inversion of multi-channel data. We suggest that the least squares inversion methods are inferior in this situation because of the particular characteristics of the two-frequency HEM system used in this evaluation; the extreme differences in sensitivity of high and low frequency data components, the overall low sensitivity to sea ice conductivity (especially for thin ice), and the partially low signal-to noise ratios of the measurements. The data sets used in this study will be made available to the public to allow alternate inversion approaches to be applied and evaluated. It is suggested that inclusion of parameter bounds and other forms of regularization could help to improve the inversion results. 相似文献

Based on recent findings of a formation mechanism of substructure in tidal tails by Küpper et al., we investigate a more comprehensive set of N -body models of star clusters on orbits about a Milky Way like potential. We find that the predicted epicyclic overdensities arise in any tidal tail no matter which orbit the cluster follows as long as the cluster lives long enough for the overdensities to build up.
The distance of the overdensities along the tidal tail from the cluster centre depends for circular orbits only on the mass of the cluster and the strength of the tidal field, and therefore decreases monotonically with time, while for eccentric orbits the orbital motion influences the distance, causing a periodic compression and stretching of the tails and making the distance oscillate with time. We provide an approximation for estimating the distance of the overdensities in this case.
We describe an additional type of overdensity which arises in extended tidal tails of clusters on eccentric orbits, when the acceleration of the tidal field on the stellar stream is no longer homogeneous. Moreover, we conclude that a pericentre passage or a disc shock is not the direct origin of an overdensity within a tidal tail. Escape due to such tidal perturbations does not take place immediately after the perturbation but is rather delayed and spread over the orbit of the cluster. All observable overdensities are therefore of the mentioned two types. In particular, we note that substructured tidal tails do not imply the existence of dark matter substructures in the haloes of galaxies. 相似文献

The combination of high spatial and spectral resolution in optical astronomy enables new observational approaches to many
open problems in stellar and circumstellar astrophysics. However, constructing a high-resolution spectrograph for an interferometer
is a costly and time-intensive undertaking. Our aim is to show that, by coupling existing high-resolution spectrographs to
existing interferometers, one could observe in the domain of high spectral and spatial resolution, and avoid the construction
of a new complex and expensive instrument. We investigate in this article the different challenges which arise from combining
an interferometer with a high-resolution spectrograph. The requirements for the different sub-systems are determined, with
special attention given to the problems of fringe tracking and dispersion. A concept study for the combination of the VLTI
(Very Large Telescope Interferometer) with UVES (UV-Visual Echelle Spectrograph) is carried out, and several other specific
instrument pairings are discussed. We show that the proposed combination of an interferometer with a high-resolution spectrograph
is indeed feasible with current technology, for a fraction of the cost of building a whole new spectrograph. The impact on

A modification is proposed of Torricelli’s (1608–1647) formula for the velocity of water discharging from a small hole at the bottom of a large tank filled with fractal solid material. The new formula takes proper account of the mechanical energy losses due to flow in the solid matrix, thus expanding the area of validity of the classical Torricelli’s formula. Moreover, it offers a convenient alternative to Darcy’s law for estimating the discharge rate from an aquifer. The new formula was derived from laboratory experiments, with a low-Reynolds number discharge flow (Darcian flow). It was tested in a natural karst aquifer where the flow is non-Darcian, at Almiros spring on the island of Crete (Greece). Cell-Fe(III) mineral aggregates produced by anoxygenic Fe(II)-oxidizing photoautotrophic microorganisms (photoferrotrophs) may be influential in the modern Fe cycle and were likely an integral part of ancient biogeochemical cycles on early Earth. While studies have focused on the environmental conditions under which modern photoferrotrophs grow and the kinetics, physiology and mechanism of Fe(II) oxidation, no systematic analyses of the physico-chemical characteristics of those aggregates, such as shape, size, density and chemical composition, have as yet been conducted. Herein, experimental results show most aggregates are bulbous or ragged in shape, with an average particle size of 10-40 μm, and densities that typically range between 2.0 and 2.4 g/cm3; the cell fraction of the aggregates increased and their density decreased with initial Fe(II) concentration. The mineralogy of the ferric iron phase depended on the composition of the medium: goethite formed in cultures grown by oxidation of dissolved Fe(II) medium in the presence of low phosphate concentrations, while poorly ordered ferrihydrite (or Fe(III) phosphates) formed when amorphous Fe(II) minerals (Fe(II)-phosphates) and high concentrations of phosphate were initially present. Importantly, in all experiments, a fraction of the photoautotrophic cells remained planktonic, demonstrating a constant stoichiometric excess of Fe(III) compared to the autotrophically fixed carbon in the biogenic precipitate. These results not only have an important bearing on nutrient and trace element cycling in the modern water column, but the size, shape and composition of the aggregates can be used to estimate aggregate reactivity during sediment diagenesis over short and geologic time scales. 相似文献

The combination of scanning electron microscope–cathodoluminescence (CL), fluid inclusion analysis and high-resolution electron
probe microanalysis of Al, Ti, K and Fe in vein quartz has yielded results permitting a greater understanding of the complex
mineralisation of the Central Oyu Tolgoi and Zesen Uul porphyry-style deposits, southern Mongolia. These data demonstrate
the relationship between quartz precipitation, dissolution and ore deposition as the mineralising fluid chemistry changed
through time. Four major quartz generations are identified in the A-type veins from the stockworks of both the Central Oyu
Tolgoi (OTi to OTiv) and Zesen Uul deposits (ZUi to ZUiv). Despite differences in the associated alteration and mineralisation
style, the observed CL textures and trace element signatures of the quartz generations are comparable between deposits. The
OTi and ZUi stage formed both the primary network of A-type veins and pervasive silicification of the host rock. Using the
Ti-in-quartz geothermometer, crystallisation temperatures for OTi and ZUi of between 598°C and 880°C are indicated. The main
stage of sulphide mineralisation was accompanied by the dissolution of pre-existing quartz (OTi and ZUi) and precipitation
of a weakly luminescent generation of quartz (OTii and ZUii) with a low Ti content, reflected in a calculated temperature
drop from approximately 700°C to 340°C in Central Oyu Tolgoi and 445°C in Zesen Uul. OTii and ZUii stage quartzes show high
and variable Al concentrations. The next stage of quartz in both deposits (OTiii and ZUiii) forms a fine network of veins
in cracks formed in pre-existing quartz. OTiii and ZUiii quartz contain measurable fluid inclusions of moderate salinity (3–17.1 wt.%
NaCl eq.), entrapped in the temperature range 256°C to 385°C. OTiii and ZUiii are not related to any sulphide mineralisation.
The final OTiv and ZUiv stages are characterised by quartz–calcite micro-breccias that penetrate the A-type veins. Based on
the calculated entrapment temperatures, the OTiv/ZUiv stage crystallised between 212°C and 335°C, and the quartz is characterised
by elevated but variable Al and Fe contents. The CL and trace element signatures of the OTi to OTiii and ZUi to ZUiii stages
of the two Mongolian porphyries show similar features to those observed in porphyry-style deposits from other regions. This
suggests that a common sequence of quartz crystallisation occurs during the formation of early veins in many porphyry copper

Soil contamination by heavy metals and organic pollutants around industrial premises is a problem in many countries around
the world. Delineating zones where pollutants exceed tolerable levels is a necessity for successfully mitigating related health
risks. Predictions of pollutants are usually required for blocks because remediation or regulatory decisions are imposed for
entire parcels. Parcel areas typically exceed the observation support, but are smaller than the survey domain. Mapping soil
pollution therefore involves a local change of support. The goal of this work is to find a simple, robust, and precise method
for predicting block means (linear predictions) and threshold exceedance by block means (nonlinear predictions) from data
observed at points that show a spatial trend. By simulations, we compared the performance of universal block kriging (UK),
Gaussian conditional simulations (CS), constrained (CK), and covariance-matching constrained kriging (CMCK), for linear and
nonlinear local change of support prediction problems. We considered Gaussian and positively skewed spatial processes with
a nonstationary mean function and various scenarios for the autocorrelated error. The linear predictions were assessed by

Uncrewed aerial systems (UAS), combined with structure-from-motion photogrammetry, has already proven to be very powerful for a wide range of geoscience applications and different types of UAS are used for scientific and commercial purposes. However, the impact of the UAS used on the accuracy of the point clouds derived is not fully understood, especially for the quantitative analysis of geomorphic changes in complex terrain. Therefore, in this study, we aim to quantify the magnitude of systematic and random error in digital elevation models derived from four commonly used UAS (XR6/Sony α6000, Inspire 2/X4s, Phantom 4 Pro+, Mavic Pro) following different flight patterns. The vertical error of each elevation model is evaluated through comparison with 156 GNSS reference points and the normal distribution and spatial correlation of errors are analysed. Differences in mean errors (−0.4 to −1.8 cm) for the XR6, Inspire 2 and Phantom 4 Pro are significant but not relevant for most geomorphological applications. The Mavic Pro shows lower accuracies with mean errors up to 4.3 cm, thus showing a higher influence of random errors. QQ plots revealed a deviation of errors from a normal distribution in almost all data. All UAS data except Mavic Pro exhibit a pure nugget semivariogram, suggesting spatially uncorrelated errors. Compared to the other UAS, the Mavic Pro data show trends (i.e. differences increase with distance across the survey—doming) and the range of semivariances is 10 times greater. The lower accuracy of Mavic Pro can be attributed to the lower GSD at the same flight altitude and most likely, the rolling shutter sensor has an effect on the accuracy of the camera calibration. Overall, our study shows that accuracies depend highly on the chosen data sampling strategy and that the survey design used here is not suitable for calibrating all types of UAS camera equally. 相似文献

The Wüstebach catchment belongs to the German TERENO (Terrestrial Environmental Observatories) network and was partially deforested (~21%) by the Eifel National Park in 2013. In this data paper, we provide 11-year precipitation and stream water isotope data and the corresponding runoff discharge rates recorded in the Wüstebach catchment (from 2009 to 2019). In addition, we provide an overview of available datasets and access information for environmental data of the Wüstebach catchment that are discoverable with associated metadata at the Web-based TERENO data portal. We anticipate that this comprehensive data set will give new insights in how deforestation influences the hydrological system, for exampole, in terms of transit time distribution, fraction of young water and water flow paths at the catchment scale. 相似文献
