Late Holocene chronology,origin, and evolution of the St. Bernard Shoals,Northern Gulf of Mexico,USA
Several shore-parallel marine sand bodies lie on the Louisiana continental shelf. They are Trinity Shoal, Ship Shoal, Outer
Shoal, and the St. Bernard Shoals. These shoals mark the submerged positions of ancient shorelines associated with abandoned
deltas. Three of these shoals are single elongate deposits. The fourth shoal, the St. Bernard Shoals, consists of a group
of discrete sand bodies ranging in size from 44 to 0.05 km2, 25 km southeast of the Chandeleur Islands in 15–18 m of water. The St. Bernard Shoals are stratigraphically above the St.
Bernard delta complex, which was active 2,500–1,800 years b.p. Understanding the evolution of the St. Bernard Shoals is necessary to reconstruct the Holocene chronology of the St. Bernard
delta complex and the eastern Louisiana continental shelf. For this study, 47 vibracores and 400 km of shallow seismic reflection
data collected in 1987 across the Louisiana shelf were analyzed. In June 2008, 384 km of higher-resolution seismic reflection
data were acquired across the study area and appended to the preexisting datasets. Vibracores were integrated with seismic
profiles to identify facies and their regional distribution. Our results demonstrate that the deltaic package stratigraphically
below the St. Bernard Shoals is chronologically younger than the northern distributaries, but derived from the same trunk
distributary channel (Bayou la Loutre). The river eventually bypassed the northern distributaries, and began to deposit sediment
further onto the continental shelf. After abandonment, the overextended delta lobe was rapidly transgressed, creating a transgressive
shoreline that eventually coalesced with earlier shorelines in the region to form the Chandeleur Islands. The St. Bernard
Shoals formed by the reworking of the relict distributary deposits exposed on the inner to mid shelf during and subsequent

Accuracy of the Copernicus snow water equivalent (SWE) product and the impact of SWE calibration and assimilation on modelled SWE and streamflow was evaluated. Daily snowpack measurements were made at 12 locations from 2016 to 2019 across a 4104 km2 mixed-forest basin in the Great Lakes region of central Ontario, Canada. Sub-basin daily SWE calculated from these sites, observed discharge, and lake levels were used to calibrate a hydrologic model developed using the Raven modelling framework. Copernicus SWE was bias corrected during the melt period using mean bias subtraction and was compared to daily basin average SWE calculated from the measured data. Bias corrected Copernicus SWE was assimilated into the models using a range of parameters and the parameterizations from the model calibration. The bias corrected Copernicus product agreed well with measured data and provided a good estimate of mean basin SWE demonstrating that the product shows promise for hydrology applications within the study region. Calibration to spatially distributed SWE substantially improved the basin scale SWE estimate while only slightly degrading the flow simulation demonstrating the value of including SWE in a multi-objective calibration formulation. The particle filter experiments yielded the best SWE estimation but moderately degraded the flow simulation. The particle filter experiments constrained by the calibrated snow parameters produced similar results to the experiments using the upper and lower bounds indicating that, in this study, model calibration prior to assimilation was not valuable. The calibrated models exhibited varying levels of skill in estimating SWE but demonstrated similar streamflow performance. This indicates that basin outlet streamflow can be accurately estimated using a model with a poor representation of distributed SWE. This may be sufficient for applications where estimating flow is the primary water management objective. However, in applications where understanding the physical processes of snow accumulation, melt and streamflow generation are important, such as assessing the impact of climate change on water resources, accurate representations of SWE are required and can be improved via multi-objective calibration or data assimilation, as demonstrated in this study. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. Within the hazards‐ and disaster‐research community consensus exists as to factors that magnify or attenuate the effects of extreme natural events on local places. But less agreement and understanding exist concerning the methods or techniques for comparing hazard vulnerability within or between places, especially small‐island developing states. Using two Caribbean nations, Saint Vincent and Barbados, as study sites, we asked which island has the greater level of hazard vulnerability, and why. Results indicate that, although neither island has a large portion of its population living in extremely hazardous locations, Barbados has many more residents in risk‐prone areas. The methods used in this research provide valuable tools for local emergency managers in assessing vulnerability, especially through the delineation of highly vulnerable hot spots. They can also help donor organizations interested in vulnerability reduction on islands use their resources more efficiently. 相似文献

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) concentration and composition in riverine and stream systems are known to vary with hydrological and productivity cycles over the annual and interannual time scales. Rivers are commonly perceived as homogeneous with respect to DOM concentration and composition, particularly under steady flow conditions over short time periods. However, few studies have evaluated the impact of short term variability (<1 day) on DOM dynamics. This study examined whether diurnal processes measurably altered DOM concentration and composition in the hypereutrophic San Joaquin River (California) during a relatively quiescent period. We evaluated the efficacy of using optical in situ measurements to reveal changes in DOM which may not be evident from bulk dissolved organic carbon (DOC) measurement alone. The in situ optical measurements described in this study clearly showed for the first time diurnal variations in DOM measurements, which have previously been related to both composition and concentration, even though diurnal changes were not well reflected in bulk DOC concentrations. An apparent asynchronous trend of DOM absorbance and chlorophyll‐a in comparison to chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) fluorescence and spectral slope S290–350 suggests that no one specific CDOM spectrophotometric measurement explains absolutely DOM diurnal variation in this system; the measurement of multiple optical parameters is therefore recommended. The observed diurnal changes in DOM composition, measured by in situ optical instrumentation likely reflect both photochemical and biologically‐mediated processes. The results of this study highlight that short‐term variability in DOM composition may complicate trends for studies aiming to distinguish different DOM sources in riverine systems and emphasizes the importance of sampling specific study sites to be compared at the same time of day. The utilization of in situ optical technology allows short‐term variability in DOM dynamics to be monitored and serves to increase our understanding of its processing and fundamental role in the aquatic environment. Realistic models of solar prominence flux ropes are numerically constructed. The models are in 2.5 dimensions, including the effects of non-isothermal temperature, density and gravity, and pressure. Stability of the equilibria to pressure- and gravity-driven instabilities is numerically investigated, using the ballooning formalism of fusion plasma theory. In 2001 and 2002, Georgia salt marshes experienced a dieback event that, affected more than 800 ha throughout the coastal
zone. The dieback event was unprecedented in the state and affected bothSpartina alterniflora andJuncus roemerianus. A transplant study was conducted from May to October 2003 to determine if healthy plants could survive in dieback areas.
Transplants were carried out at two locations on the Georgia coast in areas ofS. alterniflora dieback along the banks of tidal creeks, an area ofS. alterniflora dieback in the mid marsh, and aJ. roemerianus dieback, area in the mid marsh. Transplant survival was nearly 100% and growth (measured as increases in the height of the
5 tallest stems and the number of stems per experimental pot) was observed in both healthy (control) and dieback areas.J. roemerianus grew more slowly thanS. alterniflora, with no, observed increase in stem height and an average 38% increase in stem density as compared to an average 57% increase
in stem height and 137% increase in stem density inS. alterniflora. Differences in growth were inconsistent but in most cases no significant differences were observed between healthy and dieback
areas. Soil characteristics measured over the course of the experiment were generally comparable between healthy and dieback
areas (redox potential averaged 69±123 [SD] across all observations at all sites, pH averaged 6.7 ± 0.3 and salinity averaged
24.9±4.4), but porewater ammonium (NH4) concentration was often higher in dieback areas (overall mean NH4 concentration, was 138±127 μM in dieback areas versus 33±40 μM in healthy areas). These results suggest that the cause of

The solar ultraviolet flux in the wavelength bands 1580–1640 Å and 1430–1470 Å (FWHM) has been measured using photon ion chambers carried on the satellite WRESAT I (1967-118A). These observations of the integrated ultraviolet flux from the entire disk indicate a value of (4570 ± 50) K for the solar temperature minimum.
