We have determined cooling rates of orthopyroxene crystals from two Mg-suite lunar samples (gabbronorite 76255 and troctolite 76535) and one terrestrial sample (orthopyroxenite SC-936 from the Stillwater Complex), on the basis of their Fe–Mg ordering states. In addition, a cooling rate of 76255 was determined by modeling the formation of exsolution lamellae in pyroxenes. The M1–M2 site occupancies of the orthopyroxene crystals were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction and the rate constant for the ordering reaction was used along with calibrations of the equilibrium intracrystalline fractionation of Fe and Mg as a function of temperature to calculate cooling rates. The closure temperatures (TC) of cation ordering are 525 °C for 76255, 500 °C for 76535 and 350 °C for SC-936 corresponding to cooling rates of 4 × 10−2 °C/year at the closure temperature for the lunar samples and 10−6 °C/year for the Stillwater sample. A cooling rate for 76255, determined by simulating the exsolution process, is 1.7 × 10−2 °C/year at a closure temperature for exsolution of 700 °C. The Fe–Mg ordering cooling rate determined for 76535 reflects a complex thermal history superimposed on the initial plutonic provenance established for this sample [McCallum, I.S., Schwartz, J.M., 2001. Lunar Mg suite: thermobarometry and petrogenesis of parental magmas. J. Geophys. Res. 106, 27969–27983]. The preservation of a crystallization age of 4.51 Ga and a metamorphic age of 4.25 Ga for 76535 is consistent with a model in which excavation of this sample from the lower lunar crust took place while the sample was at a temperature above the closure temperatures for the Sm–Nd, U–Pb and Ar–Ar isotopic systems. Temperatures in excess of the isotopic closure temperatures (i.e., >600 °C) in the lower lunar crust were maintained by heat diffusing from concentrations of U- and Th-rich KREEP material at the base of the crust. On the other hand, 76255 formed at a much shallower depth in the lunar crust (2 km) and was well below its isotopic closure temperatures at the time of excavation, most likely during the Serenitatis basin-forming impact event. Both lunar samples were reheated during transport to the surface and deposition in hot ejecta blankets. The reheating was short lived but apparently sufficient to redistribute Fe and Mg in M sites in orthopyroxenes. For the lunar samples, the cooling rates based on Fe–Mg ordering represent final stage cooling within an ejecta blanket.  相似文献

We have discovered two FUN inclusions, CG-14 and TE, among a group of five forsterite-rich inclusions in Allende, two of which are described for the first time herein. All five consist of euhedral forsterite and spinel crystals poikilitically enclosed by fassaite. Forsterite and spinel are usually segregated from one another, sometimes into a spinel-rich mantle and a forsterite-rich core. Some inclusions contain vesicles, indicating that they were once molten. The crystallization sequence inferred from textures is: spinel, forsterite, fassaite and, finally, Mg-rich melilite. One concentrically-zoned inclusion contains melilite in its mantle whose composition lies on the opposite side of the liquidus minimum in the melilite binary from that in its core. This suggests that segregation of forsterite from spinel in all of these inclusions could be due to volatilization of MgO and SiO2 relative to Al2O3 and CaO from the outsides of droplets. CG-14 is relatively uniformly enriched in refractory elements relative to Cl chondrites by a factor similar to that for Ca-, Al-rich coarse-grained inclusions except for Ca, Al and Hf which are unusually low. No Ce anomaly such as found in FUN inclusions Cl and HAL is present in CG-14. Whole-rock samples of CG-14 and TE are more strongly mass-fractionated in oxygen relative to “normal” Allende inclusions than the FUN inclusion EK 1-4-1 and less so than Cl. Relative to bulk Allende, both inclusions have strongly massfractionated magnesium and silicon and 25Mg excesses or deficits of 24Mg or 26Mg. CG-14 has a 29Si excess or a deficit of 28Si or 30Si. Volatilization loss cannot be responsible for the magnesium and silicon isotope fractionations, as this would require prohibitively large mass loss from these magnesium-rich inclusions. The remarkable similarity in textures between FUN and non-FUN inclusions implies similar thermal histories, arguing against different rates of evaporative loss of major elements. Sputtering alone may be insufficient to account for the magnitude and direction of oxygen isotope fractionation in FUN inclusions.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments are described which explore the dynamical consequences of buoyant convective upflow observed above hot pyroclastic flows. In nature, the convection is produced by the hot ash particles exchanging heat with air mixed into the front and top of the pyroclastic flow. This effect on the buoyancy due to the mixing of air and ash has been modelled in the laboratory using mixtures of methanol and ethylene glycol (MEG), which have a nonlinear density behaviour when mixed with water. Intermediate mixtures of these fluids can be denser than either initial component, and so the laboratory experiments were inverted models of the natural situation. We studied MEG flowing up under a sloping roof in a tank filled with water. The experiments were performed both in a narrow channel and on a laterally unconfined slope. The flow patterns were also compared with those of conventional gravity currents formed using fresh and salt water. The presence of the region of reversed buoyancy outside the layer flowing along the slope had two significant effects. First, it periodically protected the flow from direct mixing with the environment, resulting in pulses of relatively undiluted fluid moving out intermittently ahead of the main flow. Second, it produced a lateral inflow towards the axis of the current which kept the current confined to a narrow tongue, even on a wide slope. In pyroclastic flows the basal avalanche portion has a much larger density contrast with its surroundings than the laboratory flows. Calculations show that mixing of air into the dense part of a pyroclastic flow cannot generate a mixture that is buoyant in the atmosphere. However, the overlying dilute ash cloud can behave as a gravity current comparable in density contrast to the laboratory flows and can become buoyant, depending on the temperature and ash content. In the August 7th pyroclastic flow of Mount St. Helens, Hoblitt (1986) describes pulsations in the flow front, which are reminiscent of those observed in the experiments. As proposed by Hoblitt, the pulsations are caused by the ash cloud accelerating away from the front of the dense avalanche as a density current. The ash cloud then mixes with more air, becomes buoyant and lifts off the ground, allowing the avalanche to catch up with and move ahead of the cloud. The pulsing behaviour at the fronts of pyroclastic flows could account for the occurrence of cross-bedded layer 1 deposits which occur beneath layer 2 deposits in many sequences.  相似文献

Well-developed, clay-rich soils dominated by interstratified kaolinite-smectite are found on the uplifted coral reef terraces on the island of Barbados. The reef limestone is unlikely to have been the soil parent material however, because it is 98 per cent CaCO3 and geomorphic evidence argues against the 20 m of reef solution required to produce the soils by this process. The mineralogy of the sand, silt, and clay fractions of the soils, and trace element geochemistry, suggest that aeolian materials carried on the trade winds from Africa, volcanic ash from the island of St. Vincent, and quartz from Tertiary bedrock on the island itself are the parent materials for the soils.  相似文献

Methanotrophic biomass and community structure were assessed for a soil column enriched with natural gas. An increase in microbial biomass, based on phospholipid ester-linked fatty acids (PLFA), was apparent for the natural gas-enriched column relative to a control column and untreated surface soil. Following GC-MS analyses of the derivatized monounsaturated fatty acids, the major component (22% of the PLFA) of the natural gas-enriched column was identified as 18·1Δ 10c. This relatively novel fatty acid has only been previously reported as a major component in methanotrophs. Its presence in the soil, together with other supportive evidence, implies that this microbial metabolic group makes a large contribution to the column flora. Other microbial groups were also recognized and differences compared between the soils analysed. A recently developed HPLC method for the separation and characterisation of archaebacterial phospholipid-derived signature di- and tetra-ether lipids was used to examine methane-producing digesters. With this technique, methanogenic biomasses of approximately 1011 bacteria per g dry weight of digestor material were determined. Differences between ratios of diether to tetraether phospholipids were apparent for the digestors analysed, though the causes are at this stage unknown. Taken together, these two methods can be used to estimate methanotrophic and methanogenic contributions in both model systems and environmental samples.  相似文献
