Linear polarimetry of Ceres at 10 μm is presented. These data represent the first published polarization measurements of an asteroid in the thermal infrared. It is found that Ceres is polarized at the 0.2-0.6% level. This data set is compared with theoretical models of the linear polarization of emitted radiation from a spherical plane. These models are used to derive the pole position and thermal inertia of Ceres. Ceres is best fit with a thermal inertia of and a pole orientation of βp = 36° ± 5°, λp = 270° ± 3°. It is concluded that 10μm polarimetry is a potentially powerful technique for remotely sensing the pole orientation and thermal inertia of asteroids. 相似文献

The Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG) Project is planning to place a set of instruments around the world to observe solar oscillations as continuously as possible for at last three years. The Project has now chosen the sites that will comprise the network. This paper describes the methods of data collection and analysis that were used to make this decision.Solar irradiance data were collected with a one-minute cadence at fifteen sites around the world and analyzed to produce statistics of cloud cover, atmospheric extinction, and transparency power spectra at the individual sites. Nearly 200 reasonable six-site networks were assembled from the individual stations, and a set of statistical measures of the performance of the networks was analyzed using a principal component analysis. The range of applicability of the transport equation for photoelectrons in the ionosphere (Mantas, 1975), is extended to thermal energies. The extension enables one to calculate the photoelectron distribution in the important low energy region (i.e. < 3 eV), where most of the thermal electron gas heating takes place, and thereby to obtain more accurate excitation rates for the low energy: electronic, vibrational and rotational states of the ionospheric constituents, than was formerly possible. 相似文献

A numerical model has been made to test the theory that solar differential rotation is maintained by the Countergradient transport of energy peculiar to two-dimensional turbulence. After a brief discussion of this turbulent process, the numerical methods employed and their application to the sun are reviewed.
