A case study of warm air advection over the Arctic marginalsea-ice zone is presented, based on aircraft observations with direct flux measurements carriedout in early spring, 1998. A shallow atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) was observed, which wasgradually cooling with distance downwind of the ice edge. This process was mainly connected with astrong stable stratification and downward turbulent heat fluxes of about 10–20 W m-2, but wasalso due to radiative cooling. Two mesoscale models, one hydrostatic and the other non-hydrostatic,having different turbulence closures, were applied. Despite these fundamental differences betweenthe models, the results of both agreed well with the observed data. Various closure assumptions had amore crucial influence on the results than the differences between the models.Such an assumption was, for example,the parameterization of the surface roughness for momentum (z0) and heat (zT). This stronglyaffected the wind and temperature fields not only close to the surface but also within and abovethe temperature inversion layer. The best results were achieved using a formulation for z0 that took intoaccount the form drag effect of sea-ice ridges together withzT = 0.1z0. The stability within theelevated inversion strongly depended on the minimum eddy diffusivity Kmin. A simple ad hocparameterization seems applicable, where Kmin is calculated as 0.005 timesthe neutral eddy diffusivity. Although the longwave radiative cooling was largest within the ABL, theapplication of a radiation scheme was less important there than above the ABL. This was related to theinteraction of the turbulent and radiative fluxes. To reproduce the strong inversion, it wasnecessary to use vertical and horizontal resolutions higher than those applied in most regional andlarge-scale atmospheric models. 相似文献

Summary ?A code for the simulation of atmospheric flows in 3D is presented. The underlying mathematical model is fully compressible,
it takes gravity into account but Coriolis forces, turbulence and viscosity are neglected. The general numerical code consists
of a finite volume discretization on unstructured hexahedral grids in 3D. The code is presently being investigated on applications
to the calculation of atmospheric gravity waves on a mesh which has a structured type and is locally refined near the orography.
We develop two schemes, the main difference between them lies in the different discretizations for the mass fluxes. We show
that both schemes resolve typical structures of gravity waves in potential flow, linear hydrostatic motion and nonlinear non-hydrostatic
regime. We compare advantages and disadvantages of the developed schemes.

Summary ¶Various water budget elements (water supply to the atmosphere, ground water recharge, change in storage) are predicted by HTSVS for a period of 2050 days. The predicted water budget elements are evaluated by routine lysimeter data. The results show that land surface models need parameterizations for soil frost, snow effects and water uptake to catch the broad cycle of soil water budget elements. In principle, HTSVS is able to simulate the general characteristics of the seasonal changes in these water budget elements and their long-term accumulated sums. Compared to lysimeter data, there is a discrepancy in the predicted water supply to the atmosphere for summer and winter which may be attributed to the hardly observed plant physiological parameters like root depth, LAI, shielding factor, etc., the lack of measured downward long-wave radiation, and some simplifications made in the parameterizations of soil frost and snow effects. The fact that high resolution data for the evaluation of model results are missing and evaluation is made on the basis of the data from routine stations of a network is typical for the results of long-term studies on climate. Taking into account the coarse resolution of climate models, the coarse vertical resolution that is used in their LSMs, and the lack of suitable parameters needed, it seems that discrepancies in the order of magnitude found in this study are a general uncertainty in the results of land surface modeling on typical spatial and temporal scales of the climate system.Received October 8, 2001; revised February 15, 2002; accepted September 20, 2002

The effect of employing flux adjustments on the climatic response of an idealized coupled model to an imposed radiative forcing
is investigated with two coupled models, one of which employs flux adjustments. A linear reduction (to the planetary longwave
flux) of 4 W/m2 is applied over a 70 y period and held constant thereafter. Similar model responses are found (during the initial 70 y period)
for global-scale diagnostics of hemispheric air temperature due to the nearly linear surface-air temperature response to the
radiative forcing. Significant regional scale differences do exist, however. As the perturbation away from the present climate
grows, basin-scale diagnostics (such as meridional overturning rates) begin to diverge between flux adjusted and non-flux
adjusted models. Once the imposed radiative forcing is held constant, differences in global mean air temperature of up to
0.5 °C are found, with large regional-scale differences in air temperature and overturning rates within the North Atlantic
and Southern Ocean. Two additional experiments with the flux adjusted model (beginning from points further along the control
integration) suggest that the elimination of much of the coupling shock before the radiative forcing is applied leads to results
slightly closer to the non-flux adjusted case, although large differences still persist. In particular a dipole structure
indicating an enhanced warming within the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean, and cooling within the Atlantic sector is
not reproduced by the flux adjusted models. This disparity is intimately linked to the Southern Ocean overturning cell along
with the flux adjustments employed as well as the drift arising from coupling shock. If a similar form of sensitivity exists
in more realistic coupled models, our results suggest: (1) perturbation experiments should not be undertaken until after the
coupled model control experiment is carried out for several hundred years (thereby minimizing the coupling shock); (2) care
should be exercised in the interpretation of regional-scale results (over the ocean) in coupled models which employ flux adjustments;
(3) care should also be taken in interpreting even global-scale diagnostics in flux adjusted models for large perturbations
about the present climate.

During SESAME phase I ground-based FTIR measurements were performed atEsrange near Kiruna, Sweden, from 28 January to 26 March 1994. Zenith columnamounts of ClONO2, HCl, HF, HNO3,O3, N2O, CH4, and CFC-12 werederived from solar absorption spectra. Time series of ClONO2and HCl indicate a chlorine activation at the end of January and around 1March. On 1 March a very low amount of HCl of 2.09times; 1015molec. cm-2 was detected, probably caused by a second chlorineactivation phase starting from an already decreased amount of HCl. The ratioof column amounts of HCl to ClONO2 decreased inside the vortexfrom about 1 in January to 0.4 in late March compared to values of about 2outside the vortex. Although the Arctic stratosphere was rather warm in winter1993/94 and PSCs occurred seldom, chlorine partitioning into its reservoirspecies HCl and ClONO2 changed during that winter andClONO2 is the major chlorine reservoir at the end of thewinter as in cold winters like 1991/92 and 1994/95. 相似文献
