For water resources management, many studies for investigating flow paths from rainfall to subsurface have been conducted for last half century. A hydrograph separation based on end member mixing was carried out to evaluate the importance of the hydrological pathways providing the main sources of a small granitic watershed, Dorim-cheon, Seoul. An analysis of chloride, oxygen-18 and deuterium isotopes from precipitation and stream water during three storms was conducted with high-resolution data using 129 samples. Stream water, collected in advance of rain event, was assumed as a pre-event water (baseflow) component according to its dry condition and isotopic values compared with the values of different time periods. The contribution from vadose water was ignored due to the thin soil layer covering the study area. Using a two-component mixing model, hydrograph separation of the stream water in Dorim-cheon was conducted based on weighted mean values of rain water and pre-event water component with the high-resolution datasets. As a result of the analysis with water isotopes, contribution of groundwater was dominant during the entire study period (73–74%) except of instant dominance of rainfall at the earliest period. Using chloride as a tracer for hydrograph separation, a significant difference for the amount of pre-event water contribution was identified. Diatom densities in the surface water and dinoflagellate cysts in bottom sediments of Gwangyang Bay were studied to determine
changes in the phytoplankton community structure in response to anthropogenic eutrophication and to assess the use of dinoflagellate
cysts as indicators of coastal eutrophication. Our results show that, in nutrient-enriched environments, diatoms are particularly
benefited from the nutrients supplied and, as a consequence, heterotrophic dinoflagellates that feed on the diatoms can be
more abundant than autotrophic dinoflagellates. In short-core sediment records, a marked shift in autotrophic–heterotrophic
dinoflagellate cyst compositions occurred at a depth of approximately 9–10 cm corresponding to the timing of the 1970s industrialization
around Gwangyang Bay. This tentatively indicates that diatom and dinoflagellate communities here have undergone a considerable
change mainly due to increased nutrient loadings from both domestic sewage effluent and industrial pollution. Our study suggests
a possible potential use of dinoflagellate cysts in providing retrospective information on the long-term effects of coastal

Since the adoption of the 1969CLC and the 1971FC, the international oil-spill compensation regime has improved compensation for loss and damage caused by tanker oil spills. However, this regime has inherent limitations, such as protracted compensation payments and controversies over the scope and type of economic losses, including environmental damages, and the cost of environmental restoration. Therefore, given large oil-spill incidents, such as the Erika, Prestige, and Hebei Spirit, each government, respectively, has addressed compensation by enacting special laws or establishing domestic programs. A tidal front is a unique structure in coastal waters where tidal mixing is dominant during the summer. Various indexes to define tidal fronts and their dynamics have been reviewed in coastal waters where tidal mixing is dominant. The classification of a front in coastal waters is determined by the freshwater inflow, heating/cooling, Ekman transport, and mixing intensity. The strength of mixing plays an important role, dynamically, in creating a tidal front. The hydrography and circulation around a tidal front are crucial in the biological processes leading to the cross-frontal transport of nutrients and phytoplankton blooms. Physical-biological cooperation is necessary to clearly assess the impact of a tidal front on the distribution of phytoplankton and chlorophyll a in the tidal front area. 相似文献

We continue with our previous work on statistics of velocity centroids, to retrieve information about the scaling properties of an underlying turbulent velocity field from spectroscopic observations. We use synthetic data sets with extreme effects of velocity–density correlations that we create artificially, which also have a non-Gaussian distribution of fluctuations. We confirm that centroids can be used to obtain the scaling properties of the turbulent velocity when the ratio of the density dispersion to the mean density is less than unity, regardless of velocity–density correlations and non-Gaussianity. It was found that extreme velocity–density correlations can distort the statistics of velocity centroids, impeding the recovery of the turbulent velocity spectral index from centroids. We show that such correlations introduce high-order moments to the maps of centroids, which we disregarded in previous work, but that they are only important when the density dispersion is large in comparison with the mean density. It was also found that non-Gaussian velocity and/or density distort the statistics of centroids too, but to a lower degree than extreme cross-correlations. 相似文献

Magnetic reconnection, or the ability of the magnetic field lines that are frozen in plasma to change their topology, is a fundamental problem of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). Webriefly examine the problem starting with the well-known Sweet-Parker scheme, discuss effectsof tearing modes, anomalous resistivity and the concept of hyperresistivity. We show that the field stochasticity by itself provides a way toenable fast reconnection even if, at the scale of individual turbulent wiggles,the reconnection happens at the slow Sweet-Parker rate. We show that fast reconnectionallows efficient mixing of magnetic field in the direction perpendicular tothe local direction of magnetic field. While the idea of stochastic reconnection still requiresnumerical confirmation,our numerical simulations testify that mixing motions perpendicular to the local magnetic field are upto high degree hydrodynamical. This suggests that the turbulent heattransport should be similar to that in non-magnetized turbulent fluid, namely,should have a diffusion coefficient ~V L L, whereV L is the amplitude of the turbulent velocity and L is the scale of the turbulent motions. We present numericalsimulations which support this conclusion. The applicationof this idea to thermal conductivity in clusters of galaxies shows that thismechanism may dominate the diffusion of heat and may be efficient enoughto prevent cooling flow formation. 相似文献

A set of optimum parameter α is obtained to evaluate the linear dispersion and shoaling properties in the extended Boussinesq equations of [Madsen and Sorensen, 1992 and Nwogu, 1993], and [Chen and Liu, 1995]. Optimum α values are determined to produce minimal errors in each wave property of phase velocity, group velocity, or shoaling coefficient relative to the analytical one given by the Stokes wave theory. Comparisons are made of the percent errors in phase velocity, group velocity, and shoaling coefficient produced by the Boussinesq equations with a different set of optimum α values. The case with a fixed value of α = −0.4 is also presented in the comparison. The comparisons reveal that the optimum α value tuned for a particular wave property gives in general poor results for other properties. Considering all the properties simultaneously, the fixed value of α = −0.4 may give overall accuracies in phase velocity and shoaling coefficient for all the types of Boussinesq equations selected in this study. 相似文献

Wave-induced currents may drive nearshore mixing and transport processes, including coastal pollutant dispersion, littoral drift, and long-term morphological changes through beach erosion and accretion. In this study, a numerical model is newly developed to simulate wave climate and localized currents in complicated coastal environments. The model developed is based on a quadtree grid system. The two-dimensional hydrodynamic governing equations are solved by using an explicit Adams-Bashforth finite difference scheme. Effects of wave breaking, shoaling, refraction, diffraction, wave-current interaction, set-up and set-down, turbulent mixing, bed friction, and shoreline movement are incorporated in the model. Results are presented for set-up at a beach in a flume due to normally incident waves, and longshore currents generated by oblique waves on a plane beach. 相似文献

It is difficult to scale up measurements of the sap flux density (Js) for the characterization of tree or stand transpiration (E) due to spatial variations in JS and their temporal changes. To assess spatial variations in the sap flux density of Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) and their effects on E estimates, we measured the Js using Granier-type sensors. Within trees, the Js decreased exponentially with the radial depth, and the Js of the east aspects were higher than those of the west aspects. Among trees, there was a positive relationship between Js and the tree diameter at breast height, and this positive relationship became stronger as the transpiration demand increased. The spatial variations that caused large errors in E estimates (i.e., up to 110.8 % when radial variation was ignored) had varied systematically with environmental factors systematic characteristics in relation to environmental factors. However, changes in these variations did not generate substantial errors in the E estimates. For our study periods, the differences in the daily E (E D) calculated by ignoring radial, azimuthal and tree-to-tree variations and the measured E D were fairly constant, especially when the daily vapor pressure deficit (D_D) was higher than 0.6 kPa. These results imply that the effect of spatial variations changes on sap flow can be a minor source of error compared with spatial variations (radial, azimuthal and tree-to-tree variations) when considering E estimates. 相似文献
