A seismic study of a segment of the convergent margin of Ecuador is presented. During the SISTEUR campaign a network of 24 Ocean Bottom Seismometers (OBS) was deployed on the Carnegie Ridge, one line along the main axes of the ridge and two lines across the strike of the edge of the ridge, during one month. This marine network was complemented with a land network of 20 stations distributed in two lines: one parallel to the margin and the other perpendicular to it.The seismic event recorded by these networks, were located using different crustal models defined from the wide-angle seismic data modeling. Relative location techniques were used to improve earthquake locations. Seismogram waveform modeling allowed us to constrain hypocentral location for events farther than ~50 km from the network. This modeling also provided additional information to constrain the focal mechanisms of these events. The upper limit of the Interplate Seismogenic Zone (ISZ) is estimated to be at a 10 km depth in the region. The background seismic activity of the upper plate provided new insights:1) A seismic cluster that reaches the base of the overriding plate is linked to the Jipijapa-Portoviejo fault. The reactivation of this Quaternary fault is confirmed by focal mechanisms that provide rupture planes parallel to its superficial projection (N10°–N25°).2) The focal mechanisms presented in this study are compatible with a homogeneous regional stress field corresponding to an E–W to ESE–WNW compression and an NNE–SSW extension. The presence of strike-slip deformation, with a reverse component, corresponds to the NNE escape of the North Andean Block. Normal faulting accommodating this movement suggests that this part of the North Andean Block cannot be considered as a rigid block.  相似文献

The Lower Cambrian Saint Petersburg blue clays are composed of predominant illite and chlorite, sometimes accompanied by kaolinite. The <0.1 μm fraction has a high content of illite–smectite mixed layers. Particle-size distribution is more than 50% of clay particles and about 30% of silts. These blue clays correspond to plastic (and soft) clays; they may be compared to the Callovian clays of Bure (France), where storage of natural waste is envisaged. To cite this article: M. Les « argiles bleues » du Cambrien Inférieur de Saint-Pétersbourg sont constituées d'illite dominante et de chlorite, avec parfois présence de kaolinite. Des interstratifiés illite/montmorillonite sont très abondants dans la phase <0,1 μm. Du point de vue granulométrique, outre plus de 50% de particules argileuses, il existe une phase silteuse de l'ordre de 30%. Du point de vue pétrophysique, ce sont des argiles plastiques, de consistance molle. Elles sont subhorizontales et ont jusqu'à 116 m d'épaisseur. Outre l'absence de métamorphisme, malgré leur âge, leur caractère le plus remarquable est leur réseau de fracturation, bien observable en carrière. Les joints sont nets, sans remplissage ni cimentation. Les plans verticaux sont particulièrement développés. Le volume unitaire des blocs de matrice ne dépasse guère 1 m3. Des traces d'oxydation témoignent de circulations d'eau. Ces argiles silteuses anciennes peuvent aider à mieux connaı̂tre et comprendre les argilites silteuses épigénétiques calloviennes du site de Bure (Haute-Marne, France), où un stockage souterrain de déchets nucléaires est envisagé. A new tropical deforestation experiment has been performed, with the ARPEGE-Climat atmospheric global circulation model associated with the ISBA land surface scheme. Simulations are forced with observed monthly mean sea surface temperatures and thus inter-annual variability of the ocean system is taken into account. The local mean response to deforestation over Amazonia and Africa is relatively weak compared with most published studies and compensation effects are particularly important. However, a large increase in daily maximum temperatures is obtained during the dry season when soil water stress dominates. The analysis of daily variability shows that the distributions of daily minimum and maximum temperatures are noticeably modified with an increase in extreme temperatures. Daily precipitation amounts also indicate a weakening of the convective activity. Conditions for the onset of convection are less frequently gathered, particularly over southern Amazonia and western equatorial Africa. At the same time, the intensity of convective events is reduced, especially over equatorial deforested regions. The inter-annual variability is also enhanced. For instance, El Niño events generally induce a large drying over northern Amazonia, which is well reproduced in the control simulation. In the deforested experiment, a positive feedback effect leads to a strong intensification of this drying and a subsequent increase in surface temperature. The change in variability as a response to deforestation can be more crucial than the change of the mean climate since more intense extremes could be more detrimental for agriculture than an increase in mean temperatures.  相似文献

A temperate and boreal deforestation experiment has been performed at Météo-France using the ARPEGE climate model. A first simulation was performed as a control with a present-day vegetation map, and another one with all forests north of 45 °N replaced by meadows. Prescribed monthly mean climatological SSTs were used in both integrations. The ARPEGE climate model includes a physically based land surface scheme, which has been tested both on snowfree and snow-covered sites, and has a relatively high horizontal resolution. Results of the 4-year integrations suggest that forests exert a strong influence on the surface climate of the temperate and boreal regions. Deforestation induces a significant cooling which modifies the atmospheric circulation simulated in the high latitudes, and also in the tropics. The most important impact is observed during the melting season which is delayed by the forest removal. This result is consistent with preliminary stand-alone experiments showing that the atmospheric boundary layer can be heated by the forest, even if the ground is covered by snow. The study confirms that vegetation feedbacks should be included when performing future climate studies such as doubled CO2 experiments, eventhough many uncertainties still remain with regard to other physical aspects of the climate models. The variability in salinity and temperature in the southwest lagoon of New Caledonia (2100 km2) under non-storm conditions is analysed using a 4-year dataset (1997–2001). Seasonal and interannual variations in salinity are amplified nearshore. Temperature is larger in bays than in the open lagoon during summer, the reverse is true in winter. El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) related nearshore temperature variations parallel those at regional scale, but with seasonal variations amplified. Tropical land cover change experiments with fixed sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) and with an interactive ocean are compared to assess the relevance of including the ocean system in sensitivity studies to land surface conditions. The results show that the local response to deforestation is similar with fixed and simulated SSTs. Over Amazonia, all experiments simulate a comparable decrease in precipitation and no change in moisture convergence, implying that there is only a change in local water recycling. Over Africa, the impact on precipitation is not identical for all experiments; however, the signal is smaller than over Amazonia and simulations of more than 50 years would be necessary to statistically discriminate the precipitation change. We observe small but significant changes in SSTs in the coupled simulation in the tropical oceans surrounding the deforested regions. Impacts on mid and high latitudes SSTs are also possible. As remote impacts to deforestation are weak, it has not been possible to establish possible oceanic feedbacks to the atmosphere. Overall, this study indicates that the oceanic feedback to land surface sensitivity studies is of second importance, and that the inclusion of the oceanic system will require ensembles of long climate simulations to properly take into account the low frequency variability of the ocean.  相似文献

In order to assess the structural evolution of the Brive basin and the Paleozoic activity of surrounding major faults in the French Massif Central, we carried out a paleomagnetic study on Early Permian rocks from this basin. Positive-fold tests and solely reversed polarities indicate that the characteristic remanent magnetization is likely to be primary. Early Permian tilt-corrected site mean declinations vary from 207°–167° indicating that the Brive basin experienced internal vertical-axis rotations. On the contrary, Late Permian paleomagnetic site means exhibit a circular Fisherian distribution showing no relative rotations. Detailed analyses of Permian paleomagnetic data from five contemporaneous basins of the French Massif Central reveal that these basins share the same equatorial paleolatitude with stable Europe throughout the Permian. However, in Early Permian, three of the five basins experienced differential rotations. The Saint-Affrique basin not only suffered internal deformation during the Early Permian, but the basin as a whole underwent a full-scale counterclockwise vertical-axis block rotation with respect to stable Europe. As a consequence, paleomagnetic data from similar late orogenic basins have to be thus carefully considered for establishment of Apparent Polar Wander paths.  相似文献

Ice samples from the 905 m deep Dome C core (East Antarctica) were studied in terms of insoluble microparticle contents. Various techniques were used: right angle light scattering, nephelometer (multiangle light scattering), Coulter counter and microscope analyses, in order to make a thorough study of the physical and optical properties of microparticles and their variations over the last 30000 years. Because of the possible effect of atmospheric turbidity on the earth-atmosphere radiation balance, optical parameters of climatic importance were estimated for insoluble microparticles. The detailed profile of total microparticle mass concentrations shows a drastic (factor of 17 ± 13) difference between high Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and low Holocene concentrations. The optical scattering properties of 18000 BP continental dust do not indicate a significant difference with respect to Holocene dust in terms of particle size distribution and complex refractive index. The number to log radius size distribution of microparticles for the entire 30 000 yr period can be fitted by a log-normal distribution with two parameters (modal radius 0.25 ± 0.08 μm; geometric standard deviation 2.2. ± 0.2). However, for the smallest particles a better adjustment between experimental and theoretical scattering diagrams is obtained by adding to the observed size distribution another log-normal distribution (modal radius = 0.025 μm, σ g = 2). The complex refractive index is 1.53 to 1.56 for the real part and 0.005 ± 0.005 for the imaginary part at the wavelength used (λ= 546 nm). During the LGM stage, over the whole of Antarctica, the change in the total optical depth due to the drastic change in the insoluble aerosol loading is small because insoluble impurities are not the dominant aerosol component. It may have produced a slight warming of the snow surface (≈ 2 K). In the dust source regions, the optical depth would have been a maximum of 2 to 4 times the present value. The possible warming of the atmosphere in these regions is estimated at 3 K per day and should therefore be taken into account in paleoclimate reconstruction models.  相似文献

Abstract

As part of an extensive survey of the temperature and currents of Lake Erie, a vertical automatic profiling system (EVAPS) was deployed for three days in August 1980. This system consisted of acoustic current meters, temperature sensors and a pressure gauge. The buoyant sensor package was winched from the bottom up and down through the water column. The system collected essentially continuous vertical temperature and velocity profiles. From these profiles, the barotropic component of the flow was extracted; it shows the presence of longitudinal seiche and lunar tidal motions and demonstrates favourable agreement with a numerical model. An experimental momentum balance allows the identification of the important terms (Coriolis force, pressure gradient and local acceleration) and the crude estimation of the numerical value of the wind drag coefficient. The baroclinic part of the flow was decomposed into the three lowest order empirically‐computed internal wave modes. The first and second modes could account for most of the variation of the profiles. The temporal variation of the second mode was characteristic of pure inertial waves while that of the first mode was characteristic of inertial‐gravitational waves.  相似文献
