The Pentland Firth, located between the north coast of mainland Scotland (UK) and the Orkney Islands, is recognised as an excellent location for the utilisation of tidal stream technology. Potential ecological impacts associated with tidal stream technology may ultimately depend on device design, array size and deployment location. Available ecological data for the Pentland Firth is summarised and strategic priorities for assessing ecological impacts are provided. The Bansong Group (Daedong Supergroup) in the Korean peninsula has long been considered to be an important time marker for two well-known orogenies, in that it was deposited after the Songnim orogeny (Permian–Triassic collision of the North and South China blocks) but was deformed during the Early to Middle Jurassic Daebo tectonic event. Here we present a new interpretation on the origin of the Bansong Group and associated faults on the basis of structural and geochronological data. SHRIMP (Sensitive High-Resolution Ion MicroProbe) U–Pb zircon age determination of two felsic pyroclastic rocks from the Bansong Group formed in the foreland basin of the Gongsuweon thrust in the Taebaeksan Basin yielded ages of 186.3 ± 1.5 and 187.2 ± 1.5 Ma, respectively, indicating the deposition of the Bansong Group during the late Early Jurassic. Inherited zircon component indicates ca. 1.9 Ga source material for the volcanic rocks, agreeing with known basement ages.The Bansong Group represents syntectonic sedimentation during the late Early Jurassic in a compressional regime. During the Daebo tectonic event, the northeast-trending regional folds and thrusts including the Deokpori (Gakdong) and Gongsuweon thrusts with a southeast vergence developed in the Taebaeksan Basin. This is ascribed to deformation in a continental-arc setting due to the northwesterly orthogonal convergence of the Izanagi plate on the Asiatic margin, which occurred immediately after the juxtaposition of the Taebaeksan Basin against the Okcheon Basin in the late stage of the Songnim orogeny. Thus, the Deokpori thrust is not a continental transform fault between the North and South China blocks, but an “intracontinental” thrust that developed after their juxtaposition. 相似文献

Persistent residual eddies in a tidal channel in Wassaw Sound, Georgia, were resolved through shipboard observations. The
residual eddies appear to be linked to bathymetry and coastlines. The semidiurnal tidal constituent, which explains about
90% of the variability of the data, was found to be a standing wave and the tidal wave propagation induced residual flow was
minimal, so the advective nonlinearity was one of the major contributors to the residual eddies. From the vorticity point
of view, if the lateral friction is neglected, three terms contribute to the generation of the relative vorticity in the depth-averaged
vorticity equation. An important fact is that all these terms include the depth function: the interaction between the advection
and bathymetry gradient, the interaction between advection and bathymetry, and the interaction between mean pressure gradient

Mn-carbonates are documented in the late-glacial varved sediments from Big Watab Lake, Minnesota, USA. The Mn-carbonate is authigenic and forms rims around contemporaneous epilimnetic calcite. Although such carbonates are found in minor amounts throughout the entire late-glacial sequence, significant quantities of Mn-carbonate are associated mainly with laminated intervals.Because of the suspected difference in isotopic fractionation between different carbonate minerals, the stable-isotopic compositions of bulk carbonate samples are used as a proxy for relative amounts of the Mn-carbonate in the sediment. High 18O and low 13C values are associated with abundant Mn-carbonates. Low 18O and high 13C values are associated with only minor concentrations of Mn-carbonates.The oxygen-18 record is correlated with fluctuations in the vegetation assemblage based on pollen spectra using a multiple regression model with backward elimination. The proposed link between the sedimentary archive and local vegetation is the mediation of advective mixing in the lake by forest composition. In this model, periods of forest closure resulted in a well-stratified water column that was anoxic at the sediment/water interface, permitting the formation of authigenic Mn-carbonates. Openings of Artemisia in the forest allowed wind shear to mix oxygen to depth, causing bioturbation of the laminations and preventing the formation of Mn-carbonate. 相似文献

Field data from onshore exposures of the Oligo-Miocene Gulf of Suez Rift in the Sinai document the passive rotation of early formed mesoscale synthetic and antithetic faults and associated half-graben due to long-lived activity on large displacement (2–5 km) block-bounding faults. Early formed small-displacement (<350 m) mesoscale antithetic faults and half-graben within regional-scale fault blocks underwent progressive steepening due to footwall uplift, rotational faulting and footwall flexing on large-displacement, block-bounding faults. In contrast, mesoscale synthetic faults were progressively rotated to shallower angles. Analysis of palaeohorizontal surfaces within synrift sediments deposited in half-graben adjacent to the mesoscale faults indicate passive rotations of up to 25° about horizontal axes since deposition. Passive burial and in-filling of early formed mesoscale faults and half-graben by synrift sediments is consistent with extension being transferred from numerous mesoscale faults to few block-bounding macroscale faults as extension preceded. Furthermore, this transfer of extension appears to be associated with a marked change in basin configuration, synrift sediment dispersal patterns and facies development. Identification of early formed, passively rotated normal faults and half-graben is important for correctly reconstructing the early stages of basin palaeogeography and sediment dispersal, and for addressing models of rift basin evolution. 相似文献

Solar flare energy release mechanisms often neglect the role played by viscous effects. Here we perform incompressible planar reconnection simulations, driven by the Orszag–Tang vortex, for both classical and Braginskii forms of the viscosity. We show that strongly driven “saturated” flux pile-up current layers, which lead to weak reconnection rates at small resistivities, are accompanied by invariant global viscous losses. These results support the notion that viscous dissipation in flaring plasmas can account for a significant fraction of the flare energy release. 相似文献
