The Surface Contour Radar (SCR) is a 36-GHz computer-controlled airborne radar which generates a false-color-coded elevation map of the sea surface below the aircraft in real time, and can routinely produce ocean directional wave spectra with post-flight data processing which have much higher angular resolution than pitch-and-roll buoys. The SCR range measurements are not error-free and the resulting errors in the elevations corrupt the directional wave spectrum. This paper presents a technique for eliminating that contamination.  相似文献

Abstract— We have performed petrologic and geochemical studies of Patuxent Range (PAT) 91501 and Lewis Cliff (LEW) 88663. PAT 91501, originally classified as an L7 chondrite, is rather a unique, near total impact melt from the L‐chondrite parent body. Lewis Cliff 88663 was originally classified as an “achondrite (?)”, but we find that it is a very weakly shocked L7 chondrite. PAT 91501 is an unshocked, homogeneous, igneous‐textured ultramafic rock composed of euhedral to subhedral olivine, low‐Ca pyroxene, augite and chrome‐rich spinels with interstitial albitic plagioclase and minor silica‐alumina‐alkali‐rich glass. Only ~10% relic chondritic material is present. Olivine grains are homogeneous (Fa25.2–26.8). Low‐Ca pyroxene (Wo1.9–7.2En71.9–78.2Fs19.9–20.9) and augite (Wo29.8–39.0En49.2–55.3Fs11.8–14.9) display a strong linear TiO2‐Al2O3 correlation resulting from igneous fractionation. Plagioclase is variable in composition; Or3.0–7.7Ab79.8–84.1An8.2–17.2.‐Chrome‐rich spinels are variable in composition and zoned from Cr‐rich cores to Ti‐Al‐rich rims. Some have evolved compositions with up to 7.9 wt% TiO2. PAT 91501 bulk silicate has an L‐chondrite lithophile element composition except for depletions in Zn and Br. Siderophile and chalcophile elements are highly depleted due to sequestration in centimeter‐size metal‐troilite nodules. The minerals in LEW 88663 are more uniform in composition than those in PAT 91501. Olivine grains have low CaO and Cr2O3 contents similar to those in L5–6 chondrites. Pyroxenes have high TiO2 contents with only a diffuse TiO2‐Al2O3 correlation. Low‐Ca pyroxenes are less calcic (Wo1.6–3.1En76.5–77.0Fs20.4–21.4), while augites (Wo39.5–45.6En46.8–51.1Fs7.6–9.4) and plagioclases (Or2.6–5.7Ab74.1–83.1An11.2–23.3) are more calcic. Spinels are homogeneous and compositionally similar to those in L6 chondrites. LEW 88663 has an L‐chondrite bulk composition for lithophile elements, and only slight depletions in siderophile and chalcophile elements that are plausibly due to weathering and/or sample heterogeneity.  相似文献

A Collision Tolerant Pile Structure (CTPS) for deploying navigation aids was developed having the ability to sustain collision by barge traffic. The CTPS concept consists of the aid itself mounted at the top of a pile which is hinged at the mudline. The hinge is omnidirectional, possesses complete downwards articulation, and provides a restoring moment to return the structure to the vertical position.To serve as a design tool, mathematical models were developed for stimulating pile dynamics during operating, hurricane and collision conditions. Using preliminary modeling results, a hinge component consisting of a central universal joint, peripheral stay arrangement was selected. A design based on this concept was developed, and a physical scale (1/15) model was built for testing.Initial experiments were conducted out of water to evaluate hinge stiffness characteristics, then uniform current tests were conducted at the Coast Guard Academy's circulating water channel. Results from both experiments indicate that the CTPS has enough stiffness to remain sufficiently vertical while acted upon by current, wind and wave loadings. Collision experiments carried out at the UNH indoor pool showed that the pile can endure barge collisions. A final computer model simulation predicted that the full-scale CTPS design presented here should meet the design requirements.  相似文献

In the southern Gregory Rift valley a series of transitional basalt, ferrobasalt, and benmoreite flows (1.65–1.4 Myr) is overlain by flood trachyte lavas (1.3–0.9 Myr). Mass balance calculations for major element compositions of rocks of this suite and their phenocrysts and microphenocrysts suggest that the ferrobasalts and benmoreites formed from magma resembling the most primitive basalt by closed system fractionation of plagioclase, clinopyroxene, olivine, titanomagnetite, and apatite. The trachytes formed from evolved magmas largely by alkali feldspar fractionation. Estimates of phenocryst and liquid densities and Rayleigh-law modelling of trace element contents support these conclusions. From Rayleigh-law modelling, we derived a set of effective distribution coefficients. Partial melting of crustal rocks or volatile transfer processes had no significant effect on the petrogenesis of this suite. The duration of the eruptive cycle, cooling time calculations, and mass balance calculations suggest that fractionation occurred in a magma reservoir with volume of at least 3 × 104 km3 during an interval of about 0.8 Myr. Temperatures during fractionation probably ranged from about 1200 °C to 900 °C, and pressures may have been roughly 5 to 8 Kb. We suggest that rift development was accompanied by large-scale injection of basaltic magma and dilation of the crust, extensive fractionation, preferential eruption of low-density and fluid trachytic flood lavas, and by several episodes of normal faulting.  相似文献

In order to assess the importance of siliceous sediments as a sink for oceanic B and to determine the effect of diagenesis on the mobilization of B, samples were analysed from chert nodules, bedded cherts, and siliceous banded iron formations from a variety of sedimentary environments and geologic ages. Boron analyses on bulk samples were made by prompt gamma neutron activation analysis. The distribution of B in rocks was mapped using α-track methods.Nodular Phanerozoic cherts typically contain 50–150 ppm B, and bedded cherts somewhat less. The B is initially concentrated in tests of silica-secreting organisms, but some is lost in early diagenesis as silica progressively recrystallises to quartz.Banded iron formation silica of Archean and Proterozoic age usually contains < 2 ppm B. This conforms with the view that such silica is not of biogenic origin but, since many iron formations are undoubtedly of marine origin, raises the question whether Precambrian oceans were impoverished in B. Analyses of Precambrian marine argillaceous sediments, averaging 70 ppm B, do not resolve this question.  相似文献

The formation of a shoal was investigated in the Piscataqua River, New Hampshire, which is a well-mixed channel with low freshwater flow and tidal currents up to 2.3 m s?1. Observations of sediment characteristics, bathymetry, and bottom current were made, and theory was used to predict bedload transport. Sediment sampling showed the bottom material to be coarse sand and gravel, and sidescan sonar revealed large sand waves directed upriver at the shoal. Bottom current measurements were made along transects upriver and downriver of the shoal and downriver of an adjacent deepwater area that was also studied for comparison. Bedload flux inferred from current measurements using the Brown-Einstein theory indicated that transport is generally directed upriver. Sediment budget calculations showed the shoal area to be depositional before, immediately after, and subsequent to a dredging operation at rates of 0.36 m yr?1, 1.06 m yr?1, and 0.35 m yr?1, respectively. Predredge and subsequent rates were consistent with the historical record of removal by dredging at the shoal.  相似文献

Coast-hugging surface flood plumes occur on the inner shelf of northern California during the winter season, generating dense, near-bottom suspensions which may attain fluid mud concentrations as particles settle. The period of storm-heightened waves may continue into the flood period, leading to gravity-driven seaward displacement of the bottom suspension; or the wave regime may ameliorate, leaving the suspension to consolidate as a short-lived, inner-shelf flood bed. Such beds tend to be resuspended within days or weeks by subsequent storm events that may recreate the original high concentrations. The sediment is thus dispersed seaward by gravity flows, to be deposited as a muddy flood bed on the central shelf. The locus of deposition of these “high-concentration regimes” is a function of the relative intensities of river discharge and storm wave height. Greater discharge piles thicker storm beds nearer shore, while intense wave regimes allow deposition of the fluid mud further seaward. During events with high values of both parameters, large amount of fluid mud may bypass over the shelf edge. In contrast, “low-concentration regimes” occur during storm periods when there has been no recent flood deposition on the inner shelf. The shelf floor is better consolidated than in the previous case, and the resulting suspended sediment concentrations are lower. As a consequence, low-concentration regimes are winnowing and bypassing regimes, and the beds deposited are thinner and sandier. Algorithms describing deposition by high and low-concentration regimes have been embedded in a probabilistic model. A simulation of a 400-year sequence of beds deposited by winter storms and floods suggests that on the Eel shelf, the Holocene transgressive systems tract consists of back-stepping, seaward-fining event beds, whose timelines (bedding planes) dip more gently than do their gradational facies boundaries. The weekly mass flux of C and phytoplankton pigments at five depths in the main basin of Puget Sound, a deep (200 m) fjordlike estuary, was sampled for a year with moored sequentially-sampling sediment traps. Flux measurements were compared with weekly samples of suspended pigments in the euphotic zone and bi-monthly samples of total suspended matter and particulate C throughout the water column at the mooring site.Seasonal changes in the total mass flux at all depths were small; instead, physical (river runoff, bottom resuspension) and biological (phytoplankton blooms) events caused occasional sharp increases on a weekly scale. The dry weight concentration of pigments in the trap samples mirrored the concentration of pigments in the euphotic zone suspended matter, increasing from 0·01% in winter to a maximum of 0·65% in late summer. Bloom-induced changes in the pigment concentration were observed almost simultaneously in the euphotic zone and in the traps to a depth of 160 m, indicating a rapid vertical transfer of surface-originating particles by organic aggregates. In contrast to the strong seasonal signal in the pigment concentration, C concentration varied by only a factor of three during the year.The seasonal trend of C/pigment ratios in the C flux arises from at least two sources: (1) a balance between terrestrial sources of C during the high-runoff winter season and in-situ primary production in spring and summer, and (2) cycling of C through the zooplankton population. Budget calculations suggest that the loss of primary-produced C and pigment from the euphotic zone by settling is 5% regardless of season. On an annual basis, this C flux (16 g m−2) is sufficient to support previously measured values of benthic aerobic respiration at the mooring site. To account for other C sinks such as burial, predation and chemical oxidation, however, terrestrial C sources and alternate transport pathways, such as vertical advection and sediment movement down the steep basin walls, are necessary.  相似文献

The recent changes in the North Pacific uptake rate of carbon have been estimated using a number of different techniques over the past decade. Recently, there has been a marked increase in the number of estimates being submitted for publication. Most of these estimates can be grouped into one of five basic techniques: carbon time-series, non-carbon tracers, carbon tracers, empirical relationships, and inverse calculations. Examples of each of these techniques as they have been applied in the North Pacific are given and the estimates summarized. The results are divided into three categories: integrated water column uptake rate estimates, mixed layer increases, and surface pCO2 increases. Most of the published values fall under the water column integrated uptake rate category. All of the estimates varied by region and depth range of integration, but generally showed consistent patterns of increased uptake from the tropics to the subtropics. The most disagreement between the methods was in the sub-arctic Pacific. Column integrated uptake rates ranged from 0.25 to 1.3 mol m−2yr−1. The mixed layer uptake estimates were much more consistent, with values of 1.0–1.3 μmol kg−1yr−1 based on direct observations and multiple linear regression approaches. Surface pCO2 changes showed the most obvious regional variability (0.5–2.5 μatm yr−1) reflecting the sensitivity of these measurements to differences in the physical and biological forcing. The different techniques used to evaluate the changes in North Pacific carbon distributions do not completely agree on the exact magnitude or spatial and temporal patterns of carbon uptake rate. Additional research is necessary to resolve these issues and better constrain the role of the North Pacific in the global carbon cycle. Seismic character of gas hydrates on the Southeastern U.S. continental margin   总被引:14,自引:0,他引:14  
Gas hydrates are stable at relatively low temperature and high pressure conditions; thus large amounts of hydrates can exist in sediments within the upper several hundred meters below the sea floor. The existence of gas hydrates has been recognized and mapped mostly on the basis of high amplitude Bottom Simulating Reflections (BSRs) which indicate only that an acoustic contrast exists at the lower boundary of the region of gas hydrate stability. Other factors such as amplitude blanking and change in reflection characteristics in sediments where a BSR would be expected, which have not been investigated in detail, are also associated with hydrated sediments and potentially disclose more information about the nature of hydratecemented sediments and the amount of hydrate present.Our research effort has focused on a detailed analysis of multichannel seismic profiles in terms of reflection character, inferred distribution of free gas underneath the BSR, estimation of elastic parameters, and spatial variation of blanking. This study indicates that continuous-looking BSRs in seismic profiles are highly segmented in detail and that the free gas underneath the hydrated sediment probably occurs as patches of gas-filled sediment having variable thickness. We also present an elastic model for various types of sediments based on seismic inversion results. The BSR from sediments of high ratio of shear to compressional velocity, estimated as about 0.52, encased in sediments whose ratios are less than 0.35 is consistent with the interpretation of gasfilled sediments underneath hydrated sediments. This model contrasts with recent results in which the BSR is explained by increased concentrations of hydrate near the base of the hydrate stability field and no underlying free gas is required.  相似文献
