An efficient method, based on the Ritz concept, for dynamic analysis of response of multistorey buildings including foundation interaction to earthquake ground motion is presented. The system considered is a shear building on a rigid circular disc footing attached to the surface of a linearly elastic halfspace. In this method, the structural displacements are transformed to normal modes of vibration of the building on a rigid foundation. The analysis procedure is developed and numerical results are presented to demonstrate that excellent results can be obtained by considering only the first few modes of vibration. As the number of unknowns are reduced by transforming to generalized co-ordinates, the method presented is much more efficient than direct methods.  相似文献

The MétéEAU Nappes water-resource-management tool is presented. It is usable on the aquifer or part-of-aquifer scale for real-time observation of the state of the groundwater resource, and it is already operating in France. This online decision support tool is also able to predict the state of the resource in the short- and mid-terms. The paper explains the use of the tool in a case study in the Authion Valley, in the north-west of France, chosen for its context of tension surrounding the groundwater resource resulting from high volumes of abstraction for irrigation. The results of the simulation highlight the advantages of MétéEAU Nappes as a tool for prediction and simulation of the state of the groundwater resource. The results also show the advantages of this type of tool for water resource management, such as supplying local actors with reliable and real-time observations of the aquifer and providing forecasts to anticipate possible water shortage.

To improve the stability and efficiency of explicit technique, one proposed method is to use an unconditionally stable alternating direction explicit (ADE) scheme. However, the standard ADE scheme is only moderately accurate and restricted to uniform grids. This paper derives a novel high‐order ADE scheme capable of solving the fluid diffusion equation in non‐uniform grids. The new scheme is derived by performing a fourth‐order finite difference approximation to the spatial derivatives of the diffusion equation in non‐uniform grid. The implicit Crank‐Nicolson technique is then applied to the resulting approximation, and the subsequent equation is split into two alternating direction sweeps, giving rise to a new high‐order ADE scheme. Because the new scheme can be potentially applied in coupled hydro‐mechanical (H‐M) simulation, the pore pressure solutions from the new scheme are then sequentially coupled with an existing geomechanical simulator in the computer program Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua. This coupling procedure is called the sequentially explicit coupling technique based on the fourth‐order ADE scheme (SEA‐4). Verifications of well‐known consolidation problems showed that the new ADE scheme and SEA‐4 can reduce computer runtime by 46% to 75% to that of Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua's basic scheme. At the same time, the techniques still maintained average percentage error of 1.6% to 3.5% for pore pressure and 0.2% to 1.5% for displacement solutions and were still accurate under typical grid non‐uniformities. This result suggests that the new high‐order ADE scheme can provide an efficient explicit technique for solving the flow equation of a coupled H‐M problem, which will be beneficial for large‐scale and long‐term H‐M problems in geoengineering.  相似文献

A new procedure to integrate critical state models including Cam–Clay and modified Cam–Clay is proposed here. The proposed procedure makes use of the linearity of the virgin isotropic compression curve and the parallel anisotropic consolidation lines in e–ln p space which are basic features of the formulation of critical state models. Using this algorithm, a unique final stress state may be found as a function of a single unknown for elastoplastic loading. The key equations are given in this article for the Cam–Clay and modified Cam–Clay models. The use of the Newton–Raphson iterative method to minimize residuals and obtain a converged solution is described here. This new algorithm may be applied using the assumptions of linear elasticity or non‐linear elasticity within a given loading step. The new algorithm proposed here is internally consistent and has computational advantages over the current numerical integration procedures. Karst cavities in fissured soluble rock represent serious geotechnical hazard for civil construction and urban development. The process of cavity formation, expansion, and propagation is difficult to predict because it is driven by a combination of diverse causes, such as the dissolution rate of rock; flow of groundwater; amount of fine material within rock layers; presence of loose, uncontrolled fill over the rock; and the leakage of underground utilities. Several factors can affect cavity stability, including cavity geometry and dimensions, cavity depth, overburden surface-layer lithology, and surface-loading conditions. This paper presents a case study for karst cavities stability in the Abu Dhabi Municipality (ADM) of the United Arab Emirates as part of a comprehensive study initiated by the ADM to address the geotechnical, geologic, and hydrogeological hazards encountered in the municipality. The purpose of this study is to develop a methodology for assessing karst cavities stability in the ADM, and thereby, quantify their potential hazard for civil construction and urban development in the municipality. A numerical study is performed, using a finite difference model that is based on site-specific ground conditions encountered in a localized area. Results from this numerical investigation are presented in the form of stability charts for different lithologic and surface-loading conditions. These charts are used to develop a set of geographic information system cavity-collapse geohazard maps for the study area to factor solution cavity-collapse risk into an integrated geohazard map for the ADM. Based on available information and the case study presented herein, it is concluded that the collapse of solution cavities do not significantly contribute to the geotechnical hazard observed in the ADM.  相似文献

Five inorganic geochemical data sets with ion balances less than or equal to 5% (for different hydrogeologic basins in Mexico) were used to construct specific conductance (SC) vs. total dissolved solids (TDS) curves for each aquifer. These curves allow one to proxy the specific conductance for inorganic water quality. The data from these five curves were integrated to form a "global" curve for Mexico. The equation that defines the line is SC = 1.40 TDS + 18. We propose that, in addition to allowing ground water monitoring, establishing a SC vs. TDS curve may be implemented to monitor drinking water supplies such as wells and reservoirs. If anomalously high values are observed, this would warrant detailed geochemical sampling.  相似文献

Marine oxygen-deficient environments with high sedimentation rates and high primary productivity can provide relevant information regarding variations of ocean–climatic conditions in the past. In the Humboldt current ecosystem, which now hosts huge populations of pelagic fishes (mainly anchovy and sardine), fish scale abundance in the sedimentary record may be useful indicators of environmental change. Here we assess such a proxy record in a 42 cm-long sedimentary core collected from 80 m in Mejillones Bay (23°S, northern Chile). We also analyse fish remains in surface sediment sampled along a bathymetric transect (from 10 to 110 m water depth) in the same bay. In the core-top record, the fluctuations of sardine and anchovy scale deposition rates (SDR) agreed with those of industrial catches for these two species in northern Chile, tending to validate the SDR as a proxy of local fish biomass when bottom anoxic conditions prevail. However, apparent SDR for records prior to 1820 have probably been influenced by dissolution processes linked to the oxygenation of the bottom environment of Mejillones Bay, as suggested by other proxy records. After 1820, the fluctuations in the relative abundance of sardine and anchovy scales point to alternating warm and cold conditions during about 30 years and then a progressively cooler period. Since ca. 1870, marked fluctuations of SDR of both species are observed, probably as a consequence of the onset of a different oceanographic regime characterized by intensified upwelling, stronger subsurface oxygen deficiency, higher primary productivity, and enhanced “ENSO-like” interdecadal variability. While anchovy SDR fluctuated in periods of 25–40 years, only two peak periods of sardine SDR occurred (late 19th century and late 20th century), suggesting that sardine abundance depends on other ocean–climatic factors.  相似文献
