We have discovered a population of extremely red galaxies at z  ≃ 1.5 which have apparent stellar ages of ≳ 3 Gyr, based on detailed spectroscopy in the rest-frame ultraviolet. In order for galaxies to have existed at the high collapse redshifts indicated by these ages, there must be a minimum level of power in the density fluctuation spectrum on galaxy scales. This paper compares the required power with that inferred from other high-redshift populations: damped Lyα absorbers and Lyman-limit galaxies at z  ≃ 3.2. If the collapse redshifts for the old red galaxies are in the range z c ≃ 6–8, there is general agreement between the various tracers on the required inhomogeneity on 1-Mpc scales. This level of small-scale power requires the Lyman-limit galaxies to be approximately ν ≃ 3.0 fluctuations, implying a very large bias parameter b  ≃ 6. If the collapse redshifts of the red galaxies are indeed in the range z c = 6–8 required for power spectrum consistency, their implied ages at z  ≃ 1.5 are between 3 and 3.8 Gyr for essentially any model universe of current age 14 Gyr. The age of these objects as deduced from gravitational collapse thus provides independent support for the ages estimated from their stellar populations. Such early-forming galaxies are rare, and their contribution to the cosmological stellar density is consistent with an extrapolation to higher redshifts of the star formation rate measured at z  < 5; there is no evidence for a general era of spheroid formation at extreme redshifts.  相似文献

Rock burst is a complex dynamic process can lead to casualties, to failure and deformation of the supporting structures, and to damage of the equipment on site; hence, its prediction is of great importance in underground construction. We present a novel empirical method to predict rock burst based on the theory of logistic regression classifiers. An extensive database collected from the literature, which includes observations about rock burst occurrence (or not) in underground excavations in projects from all over the world, is used to train and validate the model. The proposed approach allows us to compute new class separation lines (or planes) to estimate the probability of rock burst, using different combinations of five possible input parameters—tunnel depth, H; maximum tangential stress, MTS; elastic energy index, W et; uniaxial compressive strength of rock, UCS; uniaxial tensile strength of rock, UTS—among which it was found that the preferable model could be developed in HW et–UCS space. The proposed model is validated with goodness-of-fit tests and nine-fold cross-validation; results show that its predictive capability compares well with previously proposed empirical methods and confirm that, as expected, the probability of rock burst increases with excavation depth, and that both W et and UCS have a similarly significant influence on rock burst occurrence. Finally, expressions are proposed for identification of conditions associated with several reference values of rock burst probability, which can be employed in preliminary risk analyses.  相似文献

 The Cerro Chascon-Runtu Jarita Complex is a group of ten Late Pleistocene (∼85 ka) lava domes located in the Andean Central Volcanic Zone of Bolivia. These domes display considerable macroscopic and microscopic evidence of magma mixing. Two groups of domes are defined chemically and geographically. A northern group, the Chascon, consists of four lava bodies of dominantly rhyodacite composition. These bodies contain 43–48% phenocrysts of plagioclase, quartz, sanidine, biotite, and amphibole in a microlite-poor, rhyolitic glass. Rare mafic enclaves and selvages are present. Mineral equilibria yield temperatures from 640 to 750  °C and log ƒO2 of –16. Geochemical data indicate that the pre-eruption magma chamber was zoned from a dominant volume of 68% to minor amounts of 76% SiO2. This zonation is best explained by fractional crystallization and some mixing between rhyodacite and more evolved compositions. The mafic enclaves represent magma that intruded but did not chemically interact much with the evolved magmas. A southern group, the Runtu Jarita, is a linear chain of six small domes (<1 km3 total volume) that probably is the surface expression of a dike. The five most northerly domes are composites of dacitic and rhyolitic compositions. The southernmost dome is dominantly rhyolite with rare mafic enclaves. The composite domes have lower flanks of porphyritic dacite with ∼35 vol.% phenocrysts of plagioclase, orthopyroxene, and hornblende in a microlite-rich, rhyodacitic glass. Sieve-textured plagioclase, mixed populations of disequilibrium plagioclase compositions, xenocrystic quartz, and sanidine with ternary composition reaction rims indicate that the dacite is a hybrid. The central cores of the composite domes are rhyolitic and contain up to 48 vol.% phenocrysts of plagioclase, quartz, sanidine, biotite, and amphibole. This is separated from the dacitic flanks by a banded zone of mingled lava. Macroscopic, microscopic, and petrologic evidence suggest scavenging of phenocrysts from the silicic lava. Mineral equilibria yield temperatures of 625–727  °C and log ƒO2 of –16 for the rhyolite and 926–1000  °C and log ƒO2 of –9.5 for the dacite. The rhyolite is zoned from 73 to 76% SiO2, and fractionation within the rhyolite composition produced this variation. Most of the 63–73% SiO2 compositional range of the lava in this group is the result of mixing between the hybrid dacite and the rhyolite. Eruption of both groups of lavas apparently was triggered by mafic recharge. A paucity of explosive activity suggests that volatile and thermal exchanges between reservoir and recharge magmas were less important than volume increase and the lubricating effects of recharge by mafic magmas. For the Runtu Jarita group, the eruption is best explained by intrusion of a dike of dacite into a chamber of crystal-rich rhyolite close to its solidus. The rhyolite was encapsulated and transported to the surface by the less-viscous dacite magma, which also acted as a lubricant. Simultaneous effusion of the lavas produced the composite domes, and their zonation reflects the subsurface zonation. The role of recharge by hotter, more fluid mafic magma appears to be critical to the eruption of some highly viscous silicic magmas. Received: 23 August 1998 / Accepted: 10 March 1999  相似文献

Three‐dimensional (3D) modelling allows observation of geological features that may not be evident by classical two‐dimensional approaches. This is particularly important in the Pico del Águila anticline (Central External Sierras, Southern Pyrenees, Spain), a structure characterized by important geometrical variability in 3D. The Pico del Águila is a N–S‐trending fold, transverse to the E–W‐trending South‐Pyrenean thrust front, with well‐exposed growth strata that record the evolution of the structure and the influence of the South‐Pyrenean thrust front. Fold kinematics is complex and not precisely quantified. It is characterized by multiple folding mechanisms acting simultaneously in a heterogeneous stratigraphic sequence. To better understand the fold's structural evolution, 3D reconstruction and geomechanical restoration of the structure were performed. The restoration takes into account rock mechanical properties without assuming a specific kinematic model. Our work suggests that the growth of the structure was characterized by variable uplift/sedimentation rates through time and between fold limbs. The restoration also reveals that a combination of multiple folding mechanisms operated simultaneously in different units and structural domains during anti‐clinal growth. This has major implications in the understanding of detachment folds with associated growth strata, as such structures are described in many settings as potential traps for hydrocarbons and natural resources.  相似文献

We investigate the effects of using different types of statistical distributions (lognormal, gamma, and beta) to characterize the variability of Young’s modulus of soils in random finite element analyses of shallow foundation settlement. We use a two-dimensional linear elastic, plane-strain, finite element model with a rigid footing founded on elastic soil. Poisson’s ratio of the soil is considered constant, and Young’s modulus is characterized using random fields with extreme values of the scale of fluctuation. We perform an extensive sensitivity analysis to compare the distributions of computed settlements when different types of statistical distributions of Young’s modulus, different coefficients of variation of Young’s modulus, and different scales of fluctuation of the random field of Young’s modulus are considered. A large number of realizations are employed in the Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the influence of the tails of the statistical distributions under study. Results indicate the type of distribution considered for characterization of the random field of Young’s modulus can have a significant impact on computed settlement results. In particular, considering different types of distributions of Young’s modulus can lead to more than 600% differences on computed mean settlements for cases with high coefficient of variation and large scale of fluctuation of Young’s modulus. The effect of considering different types of distributions is reduced, but not completely eliminated, for smaller coefficients of variation of Young’s modulus (because the differences between distributions decrease) and for small values of the scale of fluctuation of Young’s modulus (because of an identified “averaging effect”).  相似文献

The dynamics of the ion distribution function near the Earths bow shock is studied on the basis of quasi-3D measurements of ion energy spectra in the range of 30–24200 eV/q with the Russian-Cuban CORALL instrument on the INTERBALL/Tail-probe satellite. The instrument was designed for observations of magnetospheric plasma and measures ions, in an angular range of 36°-144° from the Earth-Sun direction. Ion populations generated by the Earth bow shock are often observed upstream from the bow shock. In the solarwind stream compressed and heated by the passing of very dense magnetic cloud (CME), two types of these ion populations were measured upstream and before the bow shock crossing on 25 August 1995 at 07:37 UT. Both populations were observed in the energy range above 2 keV. At 06:20 UT, when the angle between the direction of the interplanetary magnetic field and normal to the bow shock Bn was w 43° the instrument observed a narrow, fast (800 km/s) field-aligned beam moving from the Earth. At 07:30, when Bn 28°, the wide ion pitch-angle distribution was observed. A similar suprathermal ion population is observed in the magnetosheath simultaneously with the solar-wind ion population being heated and deflected from the Sun-Earth direction. The similarity of observations during the mentioned time-interval and under usual solar-wind conditions allows us to conclude that types of suprathermal ion populations upstream and downstream from the bow shock do not depend on the solar-wind disturbance generated by magnetic cloud.  相似文献

A new period of seismic activity that culminated in a small phreatic explosion took place in Colima Volcano (Western Mexico) during the month of July 1994. In this note, we present our analysis of this seismicity based upon information from RESCO, the seismic network of the University of Colima. The activity began with a seismic swarm of type A (tectonic-like) earthquakes with epicenters towards the SSW of the summit, followed by shallow low-frequency events underneath the volcanic edifice. The activity was accompanied by landslides and culminated with an explosion that produced small ash falls on the surrounding area. The seismic activity ceased after this episode.  相似文献

An exact maximum likelihood procedure is presented for estimating the parameters of a periodic autogressive-moving average (PARMA) model. To develop an estimator which is both statistically and computationally efficient, the PARMA class of models is written using a state-space representation and a Kalman filtering algorithm is used to estimate the parameters. In order to demonstrate how to fit PARMA models in practice, the most appropriate types of PARMA models are identified for fitting to two average monthly riverflow time series and the new estimator is employed for estimating the model parameters.  相似文献

Inorganic P was fractionated into three categories (NaOH-, BD- and HCI-extractable) for 30 surface sediment samples in La Minilla Reservoir (Sevilla, Spain). The amount of reactive P extracted with NaOH (NaOH-RP) and with HCI (HCI-RP) correlated in a multivariate regression with the clay and sand content of the sediment. This multivariate function should aid in predicting the amount of phosphorus available to the sediment organisms, and it can also contribute to the knowledge of the phosphorus budget of the reservoir.Supported by a Grant from CSIC-CONICET.  相似文献

A shortcoming of freeze corers has been the inability to collect long cores in stiff sediments. We describe a hammerdriven freeze corer that collects undisturbed sediment cores up to 1.3 m in length in stiff or soft lake sediments. The corer was tested in prairie, montane and alpine lakes of western Canada. For these stiff sediments, conventional (gravity-only) freeze coring methods collected cores ranging from 25–59 cm compared with 100–124 cm for our hammer-driven device. The maximum length of cores could exceed 1.3 m if a longer core barrel was constructed.  相似文献
