Trace Metal Solid State Speciation in Aerosols of the Northern Levantine Basin,East Mediterranean 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

An established three stage sequential leach scheme was applied to a series of selected high volume aerosol samples (n = 35) collected from the Turkish Eastern Mediterranean coastline (Erdemli). Samples were selected according to their air
mass back trajectory history to reflect the contrasting mixtures of aerosol material present in the Eastern Mediterranean
marine aerosol. Two populations were adopted, those samples which were classed as “anthropogenic” and those which were “Saharan”
dominated aerosol populations. Applying the three stage leach it was possible to define the proportion for each of the considered
metals (Al, Fe, Cu, Pb, Cd, Zn and Mn) present in the (a) “exchangeable” (b) “carbonate / oxide” and (c) “refractory” phases,
representing novel solid state aerosol speciation data for this marine system. Clear trends were established, conforming with
data from previous studies with mainly crustal derived metals (Al and Fe) being present in the refractory phases (Al > 88%;
Fe > 84%) and those influenced by anthropogenic sources being dominating in the exchangeable phase, although for these metals
the variability was comparatively high (12–64%; 19–85%; 40–100% for Zn, Pb and Cd, respectively). For the majority, greater
exchangeable fractions were present the lower the crustal source contribution to the aerosol population, whereas the “refractory”
fraction exhibited contrasting behaviour. This was illustrated by the novel application of the mixing diagram, presenting
each of the three speciation stages against the corresponding percent anthropogenic contribution to each collected sample.
Zn, Pb and Cd all illustrated progressive decrease in the percent exchangeable with increasing crustal contribution to the
aerosol population. The percent exchangeable was discussed in terms of its use to represent the upper limit of the bioavailable
fraction of metal associated with the aerosol, post deposition. The mixing diagram approach enabled the prediction of the
residual fractions for Cd, Pb and Zn (41 ± 4%; 62 ± 4% and 82 ± 5%, respectively,) in Saharan end-member material. 相似文献

High levels of arsenic in groundwater and drinking water are a major health problem. Although the processes controlling the
release of As are still not well known, the reductive dissolution of As-rich Fe oxyhydroxides has so far been a favorite hypothesis.
Decoupling between arsenic and iron redox transformations has been experimentally demonstrated, but not quantitatively interpreted.
Here, we report on incubation batch experiments run with As(V) sorbed on, or co-precipitated with, 2-line ferrihydrite. The
biotic and abiotic processes of As release were investigated by using wet chemistry, X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption and
genomic techniques. The incubation experiments were carried out with a phosphate-rich growth medium and a community of Fe(III)-reducing
bacteria under strict anoxic conditions for two months. During the first month, the release of Fe(II) in the aqueous phase
amounted to only 3% to 10% of the total initial solid Fe concentration, whilst the total aqueous As remained almost constant
after an initial exchange with phosphate ions. During the second month, the aqueous Fe(II) concentration remained constant,
or even decreased, whereas the total quantity of As released to the solution accounted for 14% to 45% of the total initial
solid As concentration. At the end of the incubation, the aqueous-phase arsenic was present predominately as As(III) whilst
X-ray absorption spectroscopy indicated that more than 70% of the solid-phase arsenic was present as As(V). X-ray diffraction
revealed vivianite Fe(II)3(PO4)2.8H2O in some of the experiments. A biogeochemical model was then developed to simulate these aqueous- and solid-phase results.
The two main conclusions drawn from the model are that (1) As(V) is not reduced during the first incubation month with high
Eh values, but rather re-adsorbed onto the ferrihydrite surface, and this state remains until arsenic reduction is energetically
more favorable than iron reduction, and (2) the release of As during the second month is due to its reduction to the more
weakly adsorbed As(III) which cannot compete against carbonate ions for sorption onto ferrihydrite. The model was also successfully
applied to recent experimental results on the release of arsenic from Bengal delta sediments. 相似文献

Summary “Koshava” is a gusty wind of changeable intensity, blowing from a south-easterly direction, over Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria.
It is caused by the interaction between the synoptic circulation and the orography of the Carpathian and the Balkan mountains.
This paper analyzes wind data measured at the Belgrade-Observatory during the longest period of consecutive days of “Koshava”
which occurred from 14 January to 13 February 1972. Mean hourly wind speed data has been examined using spectral analysis.
The power spectra are calculated using autocorrelation spectral analysis, the multi-taper method and wavelet transform. The
maximum of which is about 122 h (5 days) corresponds to the time span of synoptic processes. 相似文献

The dependence of the measured apparent synodic solar rotation rate on the height of the chosen tracer is studied. A significant error occurs if the rotation rate is determined by tracing the apparent position of an object above the photospheric level projected on the solar disc. The centre-to-limb variation of this error can be used to determine simultaneously the height of the object and the true synodic rotation rate. The apparent (projected) heliographic coordinates are presented as a function of the height of the traced object and the coordinates of its footpoint. The relations obtained provide an explicit expression for the apparent rotation rate as a function of the observed heliographic coordinates of the tracer, enabling an analytic least-squares fit expression to determine simultaneously the real synodic rotation rate and the height of the tracer. 相似文献

The territory of Croatia and neighboring regions is divided into 17 seismic source zones, considering available seismological
and geological data. On this basis, seismic hazard elements (seismicity rate, maximum magnitude, b-value, probabilities of
exceedance and return periods for a predefined set of magnitudes) are computed using the maximum likelihood method appropriate
for treating data-sets with variable completeness thresholds. The values of long term expected peak horizontal acceleration
obtained by using a combination of the deterministic and the probabilistic procedure are the highest in the Dubrovnik zone,
while the Zagreb zone has the highest earthquake hazard in the continental part of the country.

The creation of the huge fans observed in the western Barents Sea margin can only be explained by assuming extremely high glacial erosion rates in the Barents Sea area. Glacial processes capable of producing such high erosion rates have been proposed, but require the largest part of the preglacial Barents Sea to be subaerial. To investigate the validity of these proposals we have attempted to reconstruct the western preglacial Barents Sea. Our approach was to combine erosion maps based on prepublished data into a single mean valued erosion map covering the whole western Barents Sea and consequently use it together with a simple Airy isostatic model to obtain a first rough estimate of the preglacial topography and bathymetry of the western Barents Sea margin. The mean valued erosion map presented herein is in good volumetric agreement with the sediments deposited in the western Barents Sea margin areas, and as a direct consequence of the averaging procedures employed in its construction we can safely assume that it is the most reliable erosion map based on the available information. By comparing the preglacial sequences with the glacial sequences in the fans we have concluded that 1/2 to 2/3 of the total Cenozoic erosion was glacial in origin and therefore a rough reconstruction of the preglacial relief of the western Barents Sea could be obtained. The results show a subaerial preglacial Barents Sea. Thus, during interglacials and interstadials the area may have been partly glaciated and intensively eroded up to 1 mm/y, while during relatively brief periods of peak glaciation with grounded ice extending to the shelf edge, sediments have been evacuated and deposited at the margins at high rates. The interplay between erosion and uplift represents a typical chicken and egg problem; initial uplift is followed by intensive glacial erosion, compensated by isostatic uplift, which in turn leads to the maintenance of an elevated, and glaciated, terrain. The information we have on the initial tectonic uplift suggests that the most likely mechanism to cause an uplift of the dimensions and magnitude of the one observed in the Barents Sea is a thermal mechanism. 相似文献

The Paleogene Ke?an Formation of southwestern Turkish Thrace (Alpine Ergene basin) which is dominantly a sandy facies, comprises the Çinarlidere (Lower) and ?aplidere (Upper) members. The turbidite sandstones of the Formation are petrologically defined as multicycle, moderately sorted, angular to subrounded, coarse-skewed, submature graywackes with a detrital clayey matrix of over 15%.The quantitative analyses of light, heavy and clay fractions of sandstone samples from the Ke?an Formation showed marked petrographic variations with grouping of these sediments as Lower- and Upper-member mineralogical facies and led to the following conclusions: a southern terrain with a relatively warm and tropical climate on a terrestrial source of a peneplain topography provided detrital material for the Lower-member sediments (the Biga Massif), while the Upper-member sediments were derived from a rapid erosion of an area of high relief with a uniform supply and continuous infilling of the basin of deposition (a western source terrain: the Rhodope Massif). 相似文献

This study is the first test of correlation between the results obtained on the large Plio-Pleistocene European faunas and the main climatic stages (cold as well as temperate) demonstrated in marine isotopic records. In particular, there are cold stages which often explain the disappearance of some species, as well as climatic events that promote the substitution of some species by other groups. A rather evident parallelism appears between the European succession of large faunal associations and paleoclimatic stages revealed in oceanic areas, but some discordance occurs in the later periods. Faced with the great diversification of the Quaternary faunas, probably due to the multiplicity of climatic environments, and with global information from oceanic records, only local biostratigraphic studies will allow precise reconstruction of the different biotopes. 相似文献

Summary A simple two-dimensional quasi-geostrophic linearized model of the atmosphere is used to investigate the behaviour of the quasi-geostrophic modes for five horizontal rectangular grids. Numerical expressions for frequencies of Rossby waves for all grids are evaluated. It was found that the B and C grids produce only negative frequencies as well as the continuous case.
