Nowadays, numerical modeling is a common tool used in the study of sedimentary basins, since it allows to quantify the processes simulated and to determine interactions among them. One of such programs is SIMSAFADIM-CLASTIC, a 3D forward-model process-based code to simulate the sedimentation in a marine basin at a geological time scale. It models the fluid flow, siliciclastic transport and sedimentation, and carbonate production. In this article, we present the last improvements in the carbonate production model, in particular about the usage of Generalized Lotka-Volterra equations that include logistic growth and interaction among species. Logistic growth is constrained by environmental parameters such as water depth, energy of the medium, and depositional profile. The environmental parameters are converted to factors and combined into one single environmental value to model the evolution of species. The interaction among species is quantified using the community matrix that captures the beneficial or detrimental effects of the presence of each species on the other. A theoretical example of a carbonate ramp is computed to show the interaction among carbonate and siliciclastic sediment, the effect of environmental parameters to the modeled species associations, and the interaction among these species associations. The distribution of the modeled species associations in the theoretical example presented is compared with the carbonate Oligocene-Miocene Asmari Formation in Iran and the Miocene Ragusa Platform in Italy.  相似文献

We demonstrate that conventional palaeoseismic trenching and mapping techniques that do not account for the effects of off‐fault deformation can significantly underestimate a fault’s slip rate. Using combined interpretations of 3‐D ground‐penetrating radar (GPR) and palaeoseismic trench data, we show that drag folding and hangingwall and footwall horizontal‐axis rotations have accommodated up to 41% of total extension across a normal fault within the Taupo Rift, New Zealand, over the past 24.6 ± 1.0 cal. ka BP. Our results may explain why geologically determined fault‐slip rates for the central and southern Taupo Rift are anomalously low when compared with geodetic estimates. We suggest that a combination of GPR surveying and palaeoseismic trenching may help resolve differences between geodetically and geologically determined strain rates observed across active extensional regimes worldwide.  相似文献

Biological invasions represent a relevant ecological and economic problem of our globalized world. While a few species have been classified as invasive due to their ecological and economic impacts on the invaded ecosystems (e.g., zebra mussel), others show contrasting invasive potential, depending on the invaded ecosystem and/or the traits of the exotic species. This paper reviews the worldwide distribution, ecological impacts and the reasons that explain the invasive success of the aquatic mud snail Potamopyrgus antipodarum Gray (Hydrobiidae, Mollusca), which is native to New Zealand. This review shows that most studies on P. antipodarum distribution have been conducted in Europe, North America and Australia, and few studies in Asia. The distribution of this snail is still unknown in other parts of the world (e.g., Africa, South and Central America). The range of invaded aquatic ecosystems varies from fresh to salt water and from lentic to lotic ecosystems. The ecological impact of this species is due to the fast population growth rate and to the extremely high densities that it can reach, leading to altered C and N cycles in invaded ecosystems. However, at low densities mud snails have been shown to enhance secondary production. Additionally, P. antipodarum has been found to overcome the negative effects of predators and parasites (e.g., it survives the pass through the digestive tracts of fish). This review contributes to assess the magnitude and ecological risk of P. antipodarum invasion throughout the world.  相似文献

Recent investigations on the dynamics of the turbulent horseshoe vortex system (THV) around cylindrical piers have shown that the rich coherent dynamics of the vortical structures is dominated by low-frequency bimodal fluctuations of the velocity field. In spite of these advances, many questions remain regarding the changes of the flow and sediment transport dynamics as scour progresses. In this investigation we carry out laboratory experiments to register the development of the scour hole around a cylindrical pier in a fine-sand bed (d 50 = 0.36 mm). We use the bathymetry measured in the experiment to simulate the flow field employing the detached-eddy simulation approach (DES), which has shown to resolve most of the turbulent stresses around surface-mounted obstacles. From these simulations we compare the dynamics of the THV to the flat-bed case, and analyze the effects on particle transport and sediment flux using the Lagrangian particle model of Escauriaza and Sotiropoulos (2011b) to study the impact of the changes of the flow on the sediment dynamics.  相似文献

Fresh and preserved (type material) specimens of the black ghost chimaera Hydrolagus melanophasma were compared for morphometric characteristics. A molecular comparison was also performed on two mitochondrial gene sequences (12S rRNA and 16S rRNA gene sequences). While significant differences in measurements were found, the differences were not attributable to sexual dimorphism or the quality of the specimens, but to the sample size and the type of statistical tests. The result of the genetic characterization showed that 12S rRNA and 16S rRNA genes represented robust molecular markers that characterized the species.  相似文献

An inclinometer is a high-precision instrument used to detect displacement along sliding zones. From the time the inclinometer pipe is embedded to inclinometer calibration and to measured data collection and processing, many errors or misjudgments can occur that affect the measurement data. The most important objective for correctly using the observation results is the accurate interpretation of the horizontal displacement profiles obtained from the observation. This study combines existing inclusive data accumulated by a monitoring system on a test sloping site in a campus. It focuses on a comprehensive interpretation of the displacement relationships among different monitoring instruments. This study uses data interpretation principles, categorizes different mechanisms, and performs quantitative analysis and discussion in order to determine the significance presented by various types of monitored information in terms of slope sliding. In addition, in this study, stairwells in a campus building are used, an inclinometer is set up, and calibration equipment for the experiment is added in order to simulate various configurations and observe patterns for displacement curves. The examples for the various conditions include empty holes in the backfill around the pipe, connection points falling off, pipe torsion, relative sliding between layers reaching an extreme condition and leading to stuck pipes, multi-layered sliding, and different thicknesses in sliding zones. The experiment illustrates changes in behavior in terms of environmental factors. The results can be used for instrument calibration and measurement, and as a reference for disaster warning and prevention in hazardous areas with slopes.  相似文献
