Spatially resolved luminescence spectra from U(VI) co-precipitated at the (101?4) growth surface of synthetic calcite single crystals confirm heterogeneous incorporation corresponding to the distribution of structurally non-equivalent steps composing the vicinal surfaces of spiral growth hillocks. Spectral structure from U(VI) luminescence at the “-” vicinal regions and featureless, weak luminescence at the “+” vicinal regions are consistent with previously reported observations of enrichment at the former sites during calcite growth. Luminescence spectra differ between the non-equivalent regions of the crystal, with the spectral features from the “-” vicinal region corresponding to those observed in bulk calcite samples. Subtle spectral shifts are observed from U(VI) co-precipitated with microcrystalline calcite synthesized by a different method, and all of the U(VI)-calcite sample spectra differ significantly from that of U(VI) co-precipitated with aragonite.The step-selective incorporation of U(VI) can be explained by a proposed model in which the allowed orientation for adsorption of the dominant calcium uranyl triscarbonate species is controlled by the atomic arrangement at step edges. Differences in the tilt angles of carbonate groups between non-equivalent growth steps favor adsorption of the calcium uranyl triscarbonate species at “-” steps, as observed in experiments.  相似文献

The University NAVSTAR Consortium (UNAVCO) Boulder Facility is assessing Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) technology for near real-time transmission of GPS data from a remote receiver to a central processing facility. The study is motivated by the need for a robust, cost-effective data communications solutions to transfer GPS data from remote sites where no other communication alternatives exist. Future large-scale plate boundary deformation initiatives using spatially dense networks of GPS will require receivers to be located where the science dictates, and not the power or communications infrastructure. For other applications, such as determining rapid GPS orbits and time transfer, there is a push toward reducing the latency in GPS data used to produce GPS data products and differential corrections (Talaya & Bosch, 1999; Jackson, Meertens, & Rocken, 2000; Muellerschoen, Bar-Sever, Bertiger, & Stowers, 2001), and to support upcoming Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) missions requiring low latency, 1-s GPS data. In this paper we evaluate two Ku-band systems, the Nanometrics Libra VSAT and the StarBand 2-way satellite Internet VSAT. The Nanometrics system test results show that continuous, 1-s GPS data can be streamed from multiple remote stations within the VSAT footprint, quality checked, and delivered for processing with a <2.5-s latency (mean 1.2 s) and a 99.8% reliability. Benefits of the Nanometrics system include global coverage, control of bandwidth allocation and data hub, and the low power draw of the system. Negatives include the cost of hub and remote infrastructure and the need to negotiate landing rights issues on a country-by-country basis. The UNAVCO Facility currently operates a Nanometrics hub and three remote VSAT systems. The StarBand system showed 98.9% reliability with a maximum latency of 10.2 s (mean latency 1.7 s) for 1-Hz GPS data and an average uplink speed of 31.7 kbps. Benefits of the StarBand system include the cost and small profile of the remote antenna. A 210Pb radiotracer was used to monitor Pb solid-aqueousphase partitioning in sorption experiments at ambient temperature, pH = 8.2, and atmospheric PCO2 in 0.15 M NaNO3 solutions. A 24 h isotherm is linear up to Pb concentrations of 4 × 10-6 M, above which an increase in slope suggests precipitation. The effect of Pb concentration, calcite loading, and ionic strength on Pb sorption with time was monitored. Sorption kinetics are rapid, followed by a slower sorption step.At a constant calcite loading500 mg L-1,fractional sorptiondecreases with increasing initialPb concentration. The reverse isobserved for surface coverage, with0.6, 5.6 and 40.2% of availableCa2+sites occupied at10-8,10-7 and10-6 MPb after 96 h. At a constant Pb concentration of10-6 M,fractional sorption increases with increasing particleloading, however surface coverage decrease with72.5 and 22.1%Ca2+sites occupied at 100 and200 mg L-1calcite after 96 h.The adsorption coefficient (Kd) is approximately 103,increases with initial Pb concentration, but remains unaffected by variable calcite loading. Absence of an ionic strength effect on Pb sorption is interpreted as the dominance of inner-sphere complexation. For desorption experiments conducted over a range of initial sorption times, an average desorption index > 0.8 but < 1 indicates that sorption is largely reversible, but is accompanied by slight incorporation. Solid-solution formation increases with time, as observed by slower initial desorption rates for samples with longer sorption times. These findings indicate that Pb may be effectively sequestered by calcite; however re-release via desorption is likely as Pb does not become significantly incorporated into the mineral structure.  相似文献

The effect of simulated solar radiation on the oxidation of arsenite [As(III)] to arsenate [As(V)] on the layered manganese oxide, birnessite, was investigated. Experiments were conducted where birnessite suspensions, under both anoxic and oxic conditions, were irradiated with simulated solar radiation in the presence of As(III) at pH 5, 7, and 9. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) was used to determine the nature of the adsorbed product on the surface of the birnessite. The oxidation of As(III) in the presence of birnessite under simulated solar light irradiation occurred at a rate that was faster than in the absence of light at pH 5. At pH 7 and 9, As(V) production was significantly less than at pH 5 and the amount of As(V) production for a given reaction time was the same under dark and light conditions. The first order rate constant (kobs) for As(III) oxidation in the presence of light and in the dark at pH 5 were determined to be 0.07 and 0.04 h?1, respectively. The As(V) product was released into solution along with Mn(II), with the latter product resulting from the reduction of Mn(IV) and/or Mn(III) during the As(III) oxidation process. Post-reaction XAS analysis of As(III) exposed birnessite showed that arsenic was present on the surface as As(V). Experimental results also showed no evidence that reactive oxygen species played a role in the As(III) oxidation process.  相似文献

Batch experiments, combined with in situ spectroscopic methods, are used to examine the coprecipitation of Cr(VI) with calcite, including partitioning behavior, site-specific distribution of Cr on the surface of calcite single crystals, and local coordination of Cr(VI) in the calcite structure. It is found that the concentration of Cr incorporated in calcite increases with increasing Cr concentration in solution. The calculated apparent partition coefficient, , is highest at low Cr solution concentration, and decreases to a constant value with increasing Cr solution concentration. DIC images of the surface of calcite single crystals grown in the presence of exhibit well-defined growth hillocks composed of two pairs of symmetrically nonequivalent vicinal faces, denoted as + and −, which reflect the orientation of structurally nonequivalent growth steps. Micro-XRF mapping of the Cr distribution over a growth hillock shows preferential incorporation of Cr into the—steps, which is considered to result from differences in surface structure geometry. XANES spectra confirm that incorporated Cr is hexavalent, and no reduction of Cr(VI) in the X-ray beam was observed up to 2 days at room temperature. EXAFS fit results show the incorporated Cr(VI) has the expected first shell of 4 O at ∼1.64 ± 0.01 Å, consistent with . Best fit results show that the second shell is split with ∼2.5 Ca at ∼3.33 ± 0.05 and ∼2.2 Ca at ∼3.55 ± 0.05 Å, which confirms the incorporation of chromate into calcite. Consideration of possible local coordination indicates that significant distortion or disruption is required to accommodate in the calcite structure.  相似文献

Given the failure of existing models for redshift-space distortions to provide a highly accurate measure of the β -parameter, and the ability of forthcoming surveys to obtain data with very low random errors, it becomes necessary to develop better models for these distortions. Here we review the failures of the commonly used velocity dispersion models and present an empirical method for extracting β from the quadrupole statistic that has little systematic offset over a wide range of β and cosmologies. This empirical model is then applied to an ensemble of mock 2dF southern strip surveys, to illustrate the technique and see how accurately we can recover the true value of β . We compare this treatment with the error we expect to find caused only by the finite volume of the survey. We find that non-linear effects reduce the range of scales over which β can be fitted, and introduce covariances between nearby modes in addition to those introduced by the convolution with the survey window function. The result is that we are only able to constrain β to a 1 σ accuracy of 25 per cent ( β =0.55±0.14 for the cosmological model considered). We explore one possible means of reducing this error, that of cluster collapse, and show that accurate application of this method can greatly reduce the effect of non-linearities, improving the determination of β . We conclude by demonstrating that, when the contaminating effects of clusters are dealt with, this simple analysis of the full 2dF survey yields β =0.55±0.04. For this model, this represents a determination of β to an accuracy of 8 per cent and hence an important constraint on the cosmological density parameter Ω0.  相似文献

This study addresses anthropogenic and ecological factors affecting a 50 hectare farmer-managed reforestation project in the cone karst of the central Philippine island of Bohol. Climate, soil moisture, micro-topographic features, soil fertility, management practices, and pre-plantation land use history are all related to, and assist in explaining the variability in, gmelina and mahogany survival and growth rates. Pre-plantation land use affects soil fertility and structure (affecting moisture-holding capacity), and micro-geomorphologic features such as slope angle, slope length, breaks in slope, and size and distribution of talus influenced tree growth and survival rates because of their relationship to soil erosion and deposition.  相似文献
