Abstract

The chemical signature of stream water is influenced by several factors: atmospheric input, weathering of bedrock and soils, biological uptake, soil storage, and decomposition of organic matter. The importance of weathering and biological activity, according to season, can be assessed by subtracting atmospheric input. In the upper Iskar Reka watershed, Bulgaria, results show that Na and Ca are mainly exported out of the basin (weathering is dominant), while nitrate and sulphate are consumed/stored. The behaviour of K suggests that biological activity is dominated by vegetation uptake in spring and by bacterial activity in autumn. In summer, the weathering load of Mg is compensated by reactions with clays. The low nutrient input from weathering due to low reserves in the soil may lead to a biomass production closely linked to a rapid internal cycle and also to a relative sensitivity of the ecosystem to any change in vegetation cover and atmospheric input.

Sampling the sea bottom surface remains difficult because of the surface hydraulic shock due to water flowing through the gear (i.e., the bow wave effect) and the loss of epifauna organisms due to the gear’s closing mechanism. Slow-moving mobile epifauna, such as the ophiuroid Ophiothrix fragilis, form high-density patches in the English Channel, not only on pebbles like in the Dover Strait or offshore Brittany but also on gravel in the Bay of Seine (>5000 ind m−2). Such populations form high biomasses and control the water transfer from the water column to the sediment. Estimating their real density and biomass is essential for the assessment of benthic ecosystem functioning using trophic web modelling. In this paper, we present and discuss the patch patterns and sampling efficiency of the different methods for collecting in the dense beds of O. fragilis in the Bay of Seine. The large Hamon grab (0.25 m−2) highly under-estimated the ophiuroid density, while the Smith McIntyre appeared adequate among the tested sampling grabs. Nowadays, diving sampling, underwater photography and videos with remote operated vehicle appear to be the recommended alternatives to estimate the real density of such dense slow-moving mobile epifauna.  相似文献

The natural river water certified reference material SLRS‐5 (NRC‐CNRC) was routinely analysed in this study for major and trace elements by ten French laboratories. Most of the measurements were made using ICP‐MS. Because no certified values are assigned by NRC‐CNRC for silicon and 35 trace element concentrations (rare earth elements, Ag, B, Bi, Cs, Ga, Ge, Li, Nb, P, Rb, Rh, Re, S, Sc, Sn, Th, Ti, Tl, W, Y and Zr), or for isotopic ratios, we provide a compilation of the concentrations and related uncertainties obtained by the participating laboratories. The reported measurements for the stable isotopes of B (11B and 10B) in natural materials are compiled, critically reviewed and evaluated. The selected values along with a discussion of the error, indicate the potential exists for using B isotopes in interpreting geochemical environments. The isotopic values for δ11B range from -31%0 for terrestrial rocks to +40%0 for sea water, relative to NBS SRM-951 which has a reported 11B/10B ratio of 4.04362 ± 0.00137 (2σ). Furtherm the isotope ratios generally form a narrow cluster of values for specific rock types. In some instances the reported δ11B may be shifted substantially from the mean of “unaltered” rock as a result of weathering or reaction such as the progressive enrichment of δ11B in marine sediments over time due to reaction with sea water.An application of widespread interest is the use of B isotopes in environmental studies. Boron is a contaminant derived from numerous sources such as municipal and industrial waste. The δ11B in these wastes or processed waters is often significantly different from the δ11B of the local ground-water, which will likely reflect the δ11B values of the nearby rocks. This modification by contaminated water can be >20%0 different from the δ11B of the unaffected water, providing a useful tool in delineating the source of contamination and the direction of migration.  相似文献

The Western Tropical Pacific(WTP) Ocean holds the largest area of warm water(28℃) in the world ocean referred to as the Western Pacific Warm Pool(WPWP),which modulates the regional and global climate through strong atmospheric convection and its variability.The WTP is unique in terms of its complex 3-D ocean circulation system and intensive multiscale variability,making it crucial in the water and energy cycle of the global ocean.Great advances have been made in understanding the complexity of the WTP ocean circulation and associated climate impact by the international scientific community since the 1960 s through field experiments.In this study,we review the evolving insight to the 3-D structure and multi-scale variability of the ocean circulation in the WTP and their climatic impacts based on in-situ ocean observations in the past decades,with emphasis on the achievements since 2000.The challenges and open que stions remaining are reviewed as well as future plan for international study of the WTP ocean circulation and climate.  相似文献

A series of parametrically defined experimental model structures has been tested under earthquake base loading using the SERC national U.K. earthquake simulator. The models have been designed with variable ratios of torsional to lateral stiffness, and with both symmetric and asymmetric mass distributions. This paper first describes the tests carried out to determine the basic dynamic model properties and the establishment of idealized analytical models which give accurate predictions of model behaviour under steady-state loading and free-vibration conditions. Secondly, a detailed discussion is made of the two highly coupled structural models having uncoupled torsional to lateral frequency ratio Rf = 1.2, commenting on the ability of the modal analysis procedures to predict accurately the maximum recorded responses. It is concluded that the theory underestimates the significance of the fundamental torsional mode of vibration in the combined structural response, and overestimates the contribution of the first lateral mode. These effects compensate each other on the side of the structure which is most severely affected by torsional response, but produce large inaccuracies on the side of the building which is commonly assumed to be affected beneficially by torsional coupling.  相似文献
