Pore solution salinity has important bearing on engineering behavior of marine sediments as they influence electrochemical stress (A–R) and differential osmotic stress (?π) of the salt-enriched clays. The electrochemical stress (A–R) is contributed by van der Waals (A) attraction and diffuse ion layer repulsion (R), while the differential osmotic stress (?π) is governed by the differences in dissolved salt concentrations in solutions separated by osmotic membrane. The paper examines the relative influence of differential osmotic stress (Δπ) and electrochemical stress (A–R) on the consolidation behavior of slurry consolidated kaolinite specimens, which are known to be encountered in recent alluvial marine sediments. Methods are described to evaluate the magnitudes of these physico-chemical components and their incorporation in true effective stress. Results of the study demonstrate that differential osmotic stress finitely contributes to true effective stress. The contribution from differential osmotic stress enables kaolinite specimens to sustain larger void ratio during consolidation. 相似文献

In the present investigation, an effort has been made to identify the critical sub-watersheds for the development of best
management plan for a small watershed of Eastern India using a hydrological model, namely, AVSWAT2000. A total of 180 combinations
of various management treatments including crops (rice, maize ground nut and soybean), tillage (zero, conservation, field
cultivator, mould board plough and conventional practices) and fertilizer levels (existing half of recommended and recommended)
have been evaluated. The investigation reveled that rice cannot be replaced by other crops such as groundnut, maize, mungbean,
sorghum and soybean since comparatively these crops resulted in higher sediment yield. The tillage practices with disk plough
have been found to have more impact on sediment yield and nutrient losses than conventional tillage practices for the existing
level of fertilizer. Sediment yield decreased in the case of zero tillage, conservation tillage, field cultivator, moldboard
plough, and conservation tillage as compare to conventional tillage. Lowest NO3–N loss was observed in zero tillage in all the fertilizer treatments, whereas field cultivator, moldboard plough and disk
plough resulted in increase of NO3–N loss. As compared to conventional tillage, the losses of soluble phosphorus were increased in moldboard plough. The losses
of organic nitrogen were also increased as fertilizer dose increased. After zero tillage the conservation tillage preformed
better in all the fertilizer treatments as per loss of organic nitrogen and organic phosphorus is concerned. It can be concluded
that the sediment yield was found to be the highest in the case of disk plough followed by moldboard plough, field cultivator,
conventional tillage, field cultivator and least in zero tillage practices. The nutrient losses were found to be in different
order with tillage practices, resulted highest in disk plough tillage practices. In view of sediment yield and nutrient losses,
the conservation tillage practice was found to be the best as the sediment yield is less than the average soil loss whereas

Kongsfjorden is a fjord in Spitsbergen (Svalbard archipelago) that lies adjacent to both Arctic and Atlantic water masses and is therefore a suitable site to understand the effects of climate change on ecosystems. To decipher the effect of the lateral advection of transformed Atlantic water (TAW) within the fjord, spatial variations of foraminiferal tests, their test size variations and stable isotopic composition (δ13C and δ18O) in the surface sediments were studied. Total organic carbon and textural analyses were also carried out. The dominant benthic foraminifera included Nonionellina labradorica, Elphidium excavatum, Cassidulina reniforme, Quinqueloculina stalkeri and Islandiella islandica. Nonionellina labradorica was the predominant species in the outer fjord, whereas Elphidium excavatum and Cassidulina reniforme were dominant in the inner fjord. Total organic carbon and the test size of Nonionellina labradorica within the fjord were highly correlated (r2?=?0.97) and both showed a decreasing trend towards the inner fjord. Based on the distribution and abundance of Nonionellina labradorica as well as temperature profiles, we suggest that there was little or no major change in the lateral advection of TAW within the fjord in the immediate past. 相似文献

Compacted clay soils are used as barriers in geoenvironmental engineering applications and are likely to be exposed to salinization and desalinization cycles during life of the facility. Changes in pore fluid composition from salinization and desalinization cycles induce osmotic suction gradients between soil–water and reservoir (example, landfill/brine pond) solution. Dissipation of osmotic suction gradients may induce osmotic swelling and consolidation strains. This paper examines the osmotic swelling and consolidation behaviour of compacted clays exposed to salinization and desalinization cycles at consolidation pressure of 200 kPa in oedometer assemblies. During salinization cycle, sodium ions of reservoir fluid replaced the divalent exchangeable cations. The osmotic swelling strain developed during first desalinization cycle was 29-fold higher than matric suction induced swelling strain of the compacted specimen. Further, the diffusion controlled osmotic swelling strain was 100-fold slower than matric suction-driven swelling process. After establishment of ion-exchange equilibrium, saturated saline specimens develop reversible osmotic swelling strains on exposure to desalinization cycles. Likewise the saturated desalinated specimen develops reversible osmotic consolidation strains on exposure to cycles of salinization. Variations in compaction dry density has a bearing on the osmotic swelling and consolidation strains, while, compaction water content had no bearing on the osmotic volumetric strains. 相似文献

Rice is one of the most important foodgrains grown in India. Attempts have been made to estimate kharif rice acreage of Orissa state since 1986 using digital remote sensing data from Landsat MSS/TM and/or IRS-1A. Accuracies of the estimates obtained have been evaluated against BES (Bureau of Economics and Statistics) estimate. The National Centre for Compositional Characterisation of Materials (NCCCM) / Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO), India have produced an Indian origin bauxite certified reference material (CRM), referred to as BARC-B1201, certified for major (Al2O3, Fe2O3, SiO2, TiO2, loss on ignition - LOI) and trace contents (V2O5, MnO, Cr2O3, MgO). Characterisation was undertaken by strict adherence to ISO Guides. A method previously developed and validated in our laboratory, using single step bauxite dissolution and subsequent quantitation (of Al2O3, Fe2O3, SiO2, TiO2, V2O5, MnO, Cr2O3 and MgO) by ICP-AES (SSBD ICP-AES) was used for homogeneity studies and an inter-laboratory comparison exercise (ILCE) of the candidate CRM. LOI was determined by thermo-gravimetric analysis. Property values were assigned after an ILCE with participation from seventeen reputed government and private sector laboratories in India. The CRM was certified for nine property values: Al2O3, Fe2O3, SiO2, TiO2, V2O5, MnO, Cr2O3, MgO and LOI, which are traceable to SI units. 相似文献

Changes in the terrigenous sediment source and transport mechanisms during the late Quaternary have been investigated using
four sediment cores within the Indian sector of Southern Ocean, using the magnetic susceptibility (MS) and sedimentological
records. Sediments deposited during the Holocene and other interglacial periods were characterised by low MS, low sand content,
reduced ice-rafted detritus (IRD) input and increased illite possibly transported via hydrographic advection from the south.
The glacial intervals are characterised by high MS, high sand content, increased IRD input and reduced illite clays, derived
from both local as well as Antarctic sources. Significant reduction in clay fraction and illite content during glacials suggests
that the erosive and transporting capabilities of the deep and bottom waters could have reduced compared to the interglacial
times. The changes in terrigenous influx to this region were significantly influenced by the rhythmic glacial-interglacial
fluctuations in bottom circulation and the position of the Polar Front. 相似文献

The gold mining process at Kolar gold field (KGF) mines has generated about 32 million tons of tailings. Gold was extracted
from the mined ores using cyanidation technique that involved dissolution of gold in the ore by water soluble alkali metal
cyanides (example, sodium cyanide or potassium cyanide). Of the several dumps that received the mine tailings only the Kennedy’s
Line dump was active prior to closure of the KGF mines in the year 2000. The Kennedy’s Line dump received sulfide bearing
tailings in slurry form that comprised of spent ore and process water bearing soluble alkali metal cyanide. Depending on the
pH of the tailing slurry, the free cyanides may exist as aqueous hydrogen cyanide that can escape to the atmosphere as hydrogen
cyanide gas or occur as soluble cyanide (CN−) ions that can be leached by infiltrating water to the sub-surface environment. Additionally, the presence of pyrite minerals
in the Kennedy’s Line dump makes them susceptible to acid drainage. This study examines the potential of gold tailings of
Kennedy’s Line dump to release cyanide ions (CN−) and acid drainage to the sub-surface environment by performing physico-chemical and leaching tests with tailing samples
collected from various depths of the dump, sub-surface soil samples beneath the dump and groundwater samples from vicinity
of Kennedy’s Line dump. The chemical mechanisms responsible for the ambient cyanide and pH levels of the tailing dump, sub-surface
soil samples and groundwater are also inferred from the laboratory results. 相似文献
