It is widely known that the sensitivity ratio of Ariake marine clay increases, if the clay is leached. Therefore, it is assumed that the mechanical properties of such clay considerably change and the shear strength decreases, if it is subjected to a cyclic load as a disturbance force, like earthquakes. In the present study, dynamic deformation and strength tests, as well as consolidation tests were conducted on Ariake clay that had leached. Static shear tests were also carried out on the clay after it had been subjected to a cyclic load. The stability of man-made earth structures on Ariake clay deposits that had leached during earthquakes was investigated. Undisturbed samples of the clay sedimented in the sea area were used in all the tests. Furthermore, an earthquake-induced residual deformation analysis was also conducted on the basis of the test results described above. Consequently, the following behaviors were observed in the study. (1) When Ariake marine clay was leached, the dynamic strength decreased and the shear modulus after subjecting it to a cyclic load remarkably decreased. (2) The effect of the leaching on the behavior of Ariake clay deposits was considerable during earthquakes.  相似文献

Interfacial energies of quartz/quartz (qz/qz), albite/albite (ab/ab), and quartz/albite (qz/ab) boundaries in low-grade pelitic schist were determined based on measured values of dihedral angles. Three kinds of microstructures were investigated, and the interfacial energies were obtained in two independent ways. (1) Relative values of interfacial energy were calculated from dihedral angles formed at quartz and albite triple junctions. (2) Subgrain boundary energy was calculated using the Read-Shockley theory for a boundary connected to an intergranular pore. Dihedral angles formed at the corners of intergranular pores were measured. From the interfacial tension balance equation, the value of the qz/qz grain boundary energy was then obtained. (3) Dihedral angles formed at intersections of either pericline or albite twin boundaries with either ab/ab or qz/ab boundaries were measured. The twin boundary energy was calculated based on a previously derived equation using Landau potential, twin wall thickness, and critical temperature for a phase transition in albite. With a modified interfacial tension balance equation for a twin boundary fixed to a facet orientation, the interfacial energies of ab/ab and qz/ab boundaries were obtained. Energies obtained by methods of (2) and (3) are in good agreement. The interfacial energies for qz/qz, ab/ab, and qz/ab boundaries obtained in this study are 270뀶, 300끞, and 250끀 mJ/m2, respectively.  相似文献

Measurements of perturbations in the atmospheric potential gradient around volcanic plumes at multiple (from two to five) sites, and measurements of the charge-mass ratio of ash particles falling from volcanic plumes, were carried out at Sakurajima Volcano, Japan. Results from 28 and 29 October 1995, show that the nature of the perturbations depends on the intensity of plume activity. Although plume activity was vigorous on 28 October, negative perturbations were predominant. As plume activity peaked, the magnitude of negative perturbations decreased just below the plume and increased at an off-axis site. During the peak period, positively charged ash particles fell out from the plume. This suggests that the active plume dominantly contained negatively charged materials, and that positively and negatively charged materials were added to the lower and upper parts of the plume, respectively, during the peak period. On the other hand, as plume activity became less vigorous on 29 October, the perturbations were characterized by a positive anomaly followed by a negative anomaly. Because wind velocity increased with altitude that day, we infer that positive and negative charges were distributed in the upper and lower parts of the plume, respectively. The differences in perturbations observed on 28 and 29 October suggest that volcanic plumes are generally composed of three parts: an upper part with positively charged gas and aerosol, a middle part with negatively charged fine ash particles, and a lower part with positively charged coarse ash particles. The compilation of present and previous results from Sakurajima and other volcanoes indicates that the effect of the negative charge in the middle part was predominant in most cases, although positive perturbations caused by the upper part were observed around some weak plumes. The effect of positively charged particles in the lower part was observable only when plume activity was sufficiently strong because positively charged coarse particles tended to fall out near the vent.  相似文献

Continuous core sediments (to a depth of 90.1 m) taken at a transitional area of Holocene and Pleistocene deposits in Sonargaon, Bangladesh were characterized for their mineralogy and chemistry. Among the sediments of the lower part of the Holocene aquifer (depth: 18–29 m), where most domestic wells are installed, As is mostly fixed in biotite and organic phases. A positive correlation of As concentration with those of Al and Fe but not that of total organic C clearly suggests that biotite is a primary source of As. Although microbial reduction–dissolution of As-containing Fe oxyhydroxides is thought to cause As-enriched groundwater in the Ganges–Brahmaputra–Meghna delta plain, the authors conclude that chemical weathering of biotite is the primary formation mechanism and prevailing reducing conditions contribute to the expansion of As-enriched groundwater in the study area.  相似文献

A comparative study of ecosystems and biogeochemistry at time-series stations in the subarctic gyre (K2) and subtropical region (S1) of the western North Pacific Ocean (K2S1 project) was conducted between 2010 and 2013 to collect essential data about the ecosystem and biological pump in each area and to provide a baseline of information for predicting changes in biologically mediated material cycles in the future. From seasonal chemical and biological observations, general oceanographic settings were verified and annual carbon budgets at both stations were determined. Annual mean of phytoplankton biomass and primary productivity at the oligotrophic station S1 were comparable to that at the eutrophic station K2. Based on chemical/physical observations and numerical simulations, the likely “missing nutrient source” was suggested to include regeneration, meso-scale eddy driven upwelling, meteorological events, and eolian inputs in addition to winter vertical mixing. Time-series observation of carbonate chemistry revealed that ocean acidification (OA) was ongoing at both stations, and that the rate of OA was faster at S1 than at K2 although OA at K2 is more critical for calcifying organisms.  相似文献

Carbon isotope fractionation between coexisting calcite and graphite (C ) has been studied in metamorphosed limestones from three thermal aureoles around Cretaceous granitic bodies (i.e., Tanohata, Tono, and Senmaya aureoles) in the Kitakami Mountains, Northeast Japan. C in each aureole decreases toward the granitic bodies, and becomes virtually uniform near the sillimanite isograd for metapelites, although calcite has variable isotopic ratios reflecting the original sedimentary compositions. The relationships indicate that isotopic equilibrium has been attained in metamorphosed limestone of sillimanite grade. Estimated C at the sillimanite isograd is similar in the Tanohata and Tono aureoles, but different in the Senmaya aureole with smaller carbon isotopic fractionations. From the temperature dependence of C and the negative dP/dT of andalusite–sillimanite equilibrium, we conclude that the sillimanite isograd in the Senmaya aureole was under higher temperature and lower pressure than in the other two localities. Temperatures at the sillimanite isograd are estimated by using existing calibrations of carbon isotopic exchange between calcite and graphite, whereas pressures are estimated from carbon isotopic temperatures and the andalusite–sillimanite equilibrium (Holdaway and Mukhopadhyay 1993a). Consistency of the P–T estimates is examined in the light of phase equilibria in the pelitic system. The estimated pressures at the sillimanite isograd are at about 2.1–2.7(±0.2) kbar for the Tanohata and Tono aureoles and less than 1 kbar for the Senmaya aureole, respectively. Geobarometry of sillimanite isograd in thermal aureoles indicates a marked difference in the depth of solidification of upper crustal granitoids: the Senmaya pluton has intruded and solidified at a very shallow level of less than 4 km whereas the Tanohata and Tono plutons are more deep-seated (ca. 8–10 km). We used 16 years of multiplatform-derived biophysical data to reveal the footprint of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) on the phytoplankton biomass of the northwestern Pacific Ocean in terms of chlorophyll a concentration (Chl), and to discern the probable factors causing the observed footprint. There were meridional differences in the response of phytoplankton to changes of environmental conditions associated with deepening of the mixed layer during the positive phase of the PDO. In general, deepening of the mixed layer increased phytoplankton biomass at low latitudes (increase of Chl due to increase of nutrient supply), but lowered phytoplankton at high latitudes (decrease of Chl due to reduction of average irradiance and temperature in the mixed layer). The areas where Chl increased or decreased changed meridionally and seasonally in accord with regulation of nutrient and light/temperature limitation by changes of mixed layer depth. The observed PDO footprint on Chl in the northwestern Pacific is likely superimposed on the high-frequency component of the PDO excited by El Niño/Southern Oscillation interannual variability. On a decadal time scale, however, Chl in the northwestern Pacific were more strongly associated with the recently discovered North Pacific Gyre Oscillation.  相似文献

To better understand the vertical distribution of phytoplankton in the tropical and subtropical North Pacific, we used fast repetition rate fluorometry to investigate the photo-physiological condition of the phytoplankton assemblage in this region between February and March 2007. Along 155°E, between the equator and 24°N, the peak of fluorescence (F m), an indication of the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM), was deeper than the top of the nitracline and occurred at the 2.4 ± 1.3 % (mean ± SD) light depth (relative to 0 m). The photochemical efficiency (F v/F m) and effective absorption cross-section of photosystem II (σPSII) were low at the surface but increased rapidly at depths between the top of the nitracline (40–138 m) and the DCM (70–158 m), an indication that the photo-physiological condition of the phytoplankton improved below the top of the nitracline. The depth of the maximal F v/F m [Z(F v/F m max)] was 18–32 m deeper than the DCM and corresponded to the 0.8 ± 0.2 % light depth. The values of F v/F m at the Z(F v/F m max) were 20 % higher than those at the DCM and averaged 0.48 ± 0.01. These results suggest that the phytoplankton assemblage beneath the DCM had a high potential photosynthetic performance capacity and was growing by using the very low ambient light in this region.  相似文献
