The relationships between the spatiotemporal variation in phytoplankton community structure and environmental variables were investigated in the Kuroshio Extension (KE) region from winter to spring by analysing biomarker pigments. In winter, when the mixed layer was deep, phytoplankton communities were characterised by low biomass and a relatively high dominance of cryptophytes, followed by chlorophytes and pelagophytes. In spring, phytoplankton biomass generally increased with shoaling of the mixed layer. In April, when nitrate was not exhausted, chlorophytes became the most dominant group throughout the KE region, followed by cryptophytes. In May, in the south of the KE, phytoplankton biomass decreased with the depletion of nitrate and cyanobacteria dominated, whereas at the northern edge of the KE, phytoplankton biomass remained high. A predominance of diatoms occurred sporadically at the northern edge of the first ridge with a shallow mixed layer and an elevated nutricline. In contrast, the contribution of diatoms was low at the northern edge of the second ridge, despite high levels of nitrate and silicic acid, suggesting that factors other than macronutrient depletion limited diatom production. In general, the contribution of diatoms to the total phytoplankton biomass in the KE region was small in both winter (2.9%) and spring (16%). This study showed that the phytoplankton communities in the KE region during the spring bloom were generally composed of non-diatom phytoplankton groups, chlorophytes, cryptophytes, and prasinophytes. It is necessary to identify the roles of non-diatoms in grazing food chains to more accurately evaluate the KE as a nursery area for pelagic fish.  相似文献

In order to determine ‘porosity‐free’ intrinsic ultrasonic compressional (Vp) and shear wave (Vs) velocities and Vp/Vs of an olivine gabbro from the Oman ophiolite, we developed a new experimental system using a piston‐cylinder type high‐pressure apparatus. The new system allowed us to measure velocities at pressures ranging from 0.20 to 1.00 GPa and at temperatures up to 300°C for Vp and 400°C for Vs. At room temperature, the Vp and Vp/Vs increase rapidly with pressure up to 0.40 GPa, while between 0.45 and 1.00 GPa the increase is more gradual. The change in increasing rate is attributed to closure of porosity at pressures above 0.45 GPa. Based on the linear regression of data obtained at higher pressures (0.45–1.00 GPa) and extrapolation to the lower pressures, combined with temperature derivatives of velocities of the sample measured at 1.00 GPa, we determined the intrinsic Vp and Vs of the sample as a function of pressure (P, in GPa) and temperature (T, in °C). The intrinsic velocities can be expressed as Vp (km/s) = 7.004 + 0.096 × P ? 0.00015 × T, and Vs (km/s) = 3.827 + 0.007 × P ? 0.00008 × T. We evaluated the intrinsic Vp and Vs of the olivine gabbro at oceanic crustal conditions and compared them with a velocity depth‐profile of the borehole seismic observatory WP‐2 area in the northwestern Pacific Basin. Although the intrinsic Vp (~7.0 km/s) and Vs (~3.8 km/s) for the olivine gabbro studied are comparable to those of seismic layer 3 in the WP‐2 area, the estimated vertical gradients of intrinsic velocities are significantly smaller than those reported from layer 3. These results suggest that velocity profiles of layer 3 in the WP‐2 area may reflect the presence of a minor porosity in lower oceanic crust, which closes with increasing depth and/or continuous changes in mineralogy of layer 3 rocks.  相似文献

Here we have conducted an integral study using site observations and a model with detailed snow dynamics, to examine the capability of the model for deriving a simple relationship between the density and thermal conductivity of the snowpack within different climatic zones used in large-scale climate modeling. Snow and meteorological observations were conducted at multiple sites in different climatic regions (two in Interior Alaska, two in Japan). A series of thermal conductivity measurements in snow pit observations done in Alaska provided useful information for constructing the relationship. The one-dimensional snow dynamics model, SNOWPACK, simulated the evolution of the snowpack and compared observations between all sites. Overall, model simulations tended to underestimate the density and overestimate the thermal conductivity, and failed to foster the relationship evident in the observations from the current and previous research. The causes for the deficiency were analyzed and discussed, regarding a low density of the new snow layer and a slow compaction rate. Our working relationships were compared to the equations derived by previous investigators. Discrepancy from the regression for the melting season observations in Alaska was found in common.  相似文献

This study applied the soil water index (SWI), which can represent the conceptual soil water contents as influenced by present and antecedent rainfall, for analyzing rainfall-induced mass movements in Taiwan. The SWI has been used in Japan for nationwide mass movement warnings. This study examined whether the SWI can be also applied to Taiwan, which has a climatic condition and high-relief topography similar to Japan. We used data for mass movements for 2006–2012 (n = 263) for the main analyses and those for 2013 (n = 19) for verification. The SWI values before the rainfall events that triggered mass movements were used as the indicator of the antecedent rainfall condition. We found that when SWI values before rainfall events increased from <17.5 to >35, the upper threshold of rainfall conditions needed for triggering mass movements significantly decreased. The mass movements in 2013 support this finding. We classified rainfall conditions for triggering mass movements into two types, short duration–high intensity (SH) and long duration–low intensity (LL), based on a principal component analysis (PCA). The SH type is associated with a rapid increase in SWI, and the LL type is associated with a gradual rise and subsequent constancy of SWI except in some extremely long rainfall events. Based on this result, we modeled the general trend of the time series changes in SWI for the two types, which was verified using the mass movements in 2013.  相似文献

We have performed millimeter- and submilli- meter-wave survey observations using the Nobeyama millimeter array (NMA) and the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) in one of the nearest intermediate-mass (IM) star-forming regions: Orion Molecular Cloud-2/3 (OMC-2/3). Using the high-resolution capabilities offered by the NMA (∼several arcsec), we observed dust continuum and H13CO+(1–0) emission in 12 pre- and proto-stellar candidates identified previously in single-dish millimeter observations. We unveiled the evolutionary changes with variations of the morphology and velocity structure of the dense envelopes traced by the H13CO+(1–0) emission. Furthermore, using the high-sensitivity capabilities offered by the ASTE, we searched for large-scale molecular outflows associated with these pre- and proto-stellar candidates observed with the NMA. As a result of the CO(3–2) observations, we detected six molecular outflows associated with the dense gas envelopes traced by H13CO+(1–0) and 3.3 mm continuum emission. The estimated CO outflow momentum increases with the evolutionary sequence from early to late type of the protostellar cores. We also found that the 24 μm flux increases as the dense gas evolutionary sequence. We propose that the enhancement of the 24 μm flux is caused by the growth of the cavity (i.e. the CO outflow destroys the envelope) as the evolutionary sequence. Our results show that the dissipation of the dense gas envelope plays an essential role in the evolution of the IM protostars. The extremely high-sensitivity and high-angular resolution offered by ALMA will reveal unprecedented details of the inner ∼50 AU of these protostars, which will provide us a break through in the classic scenario of IM star/disk formation.  相似文献

The surface topography of Asteroid 25143 Itokawa is explored using the LIght Detection And Ranging instrument (LIDAR). The data confirm the presence of a rough highland and a smooth lowland. The highland is dominated by boulders, but also possesses topography associated with surface lineaments and broad surface facets. The boulders ensure that the roughness of the highlands over short distances is typically greater relative to most surfaces on 433 Eros. Over larger distances, Itokawa is always smoother than Eros possibly because of its smaller size and weak rubble-pile structure. The lowlands of Itokawa are very smooth, and are typically devoid of boulders. Some transitional regions midway between the highlands and lowlands also exist. In these areas, craters that retain their regolith fill possess flat floors and resemble “ponds” seen on 433 Eros. Analyses of surface elevation, imagery and a quantitative measure of surface roughness are consistent with regolith flowing downhill from the highlands to fill in the low areas of Itokawa, probably covering up any pre-existing rough terrain. Using this interpretation, we find a minimum 2.3±0.4 m thick layer of regolith in the lowlands, which, if spread evenly across the entire asteroid, corresponds to a 42±1 cm thick layer. It is very difficult to generate this amount of regolith with the population of craters seen on Itokawa. However, an Itokawa composed of several large masses may have retained this regolith during its formation. The presence of such large masses could account for the observed lineaments and what appear to be exposures of bedrock on the largest steep slope observed.  相似文献

Coincidence between the onset of sudden brightening of the auroral arc in the auroral oval and the onset of Pi2 magnetic pulsation in low latitudes is examined based on the auroral data obtained at a chain of stations in Alaska and the Pi2 data obtained at the low-latitude station Onagawa. The result shows that the low-latitude Pi2 occurs almost simultaneously with the sudden brightening of the auroral arc, i.e. the onset of an auroral substorm (T = 0). It is concluded that the onset of substorms can be identified quite well with the onset of the low-latitude Pi2.  相似文献

All twenty-three stable rare gas isotopes have been measured in a mantle-derived amphibole, kaersutite. The elemental abundance pattern of the rare gases is similar to the “planetary” rare gas pattern as defined by carbonaceous chondrites. The3He/4He ratio, (4.9 ± 0.6) × 10?5, is suggestive of primordial He degassing from the mantle. Excess21Ne is present. The measured40Ar/36Ar ratio,400 ± 5, may represent a mantle40Ar/36Ar ratio <240 when corrected for radiogenic40Ar. The heavy isotopes of Kr and t0he Xe isotopes are within error of the atmosphere values.  相似文献

K-Ar dating and 40Ar-39Ar step heating experiments have been done for successive zones from the surface to the interior in two, altered dredged submarine basalts (16-2-6 and Aries V-23). The K contents show a systematic decrease (surface to the interior), whereas the K-Ar ages show a similar decrease in one sample (16-2-6) and almost no change in the other (Aries V-23).A simple diffusion model suggests that the K content decreases systematically from the surface to the interior, whereas the K-Ar age decreases or remains almost constant, depending on whether the times of solidification and of commencement of K-diffusion are close to each other or differ significantly. Comparison of the observed K content and K-Ar age variations within the rocks with the theoretical model then suggests that the solidification age of the sample Aries V-23 is much older than the commencement of the potassium-diffusion, the latter age perhaps being represented by the Eocene planktonic foraminifera on this sample. The 40Ar-39Ar isochron age obtained for the freshest specimen of Aries V-23 is 86.6 ± 3.7 m.y., supporting the above conclusion.The mathematical simulation indicates that an apparent concordance of the K-Ar age observed in some submarine basalts may be an artifact, only reflecting the significant gap between the solidification age and the time of the commencement of the K-diffusion in the rocks. Microprobe examination reveals that the potassium enrichment in the outer margin, is mainly due to K feldspar, which is an alteration product of plagioclase.  相似文献
