Two shallow translational slides occurred in blanket peat on Skerry Hill, Co. Antrim, in November 1991 at sites adjacent to slides activated c. 25 years ago. Heavy rainfall, degraded drainage ditches and slope morphology are considered to have been important factors contributing to peat instability. The failure planes are located close to the peat base, at the boundary between less compact fibrous peat above and more compact humified peat below. The preservation of large blocks and rafts of intact peat and the limited amount of liquefied peat in the debris tongues is thought to reflect the degree of peat humification. There is also some evidence to suggest that the peat was probably undersaturated at the time of failure and this may have assisted preservation of intact peat blocks. Tension cracks, resulting from either short-term desiccation or long-term slow mass movement, are thought to have facilitated the rapid transfer of heavy rain to the subsurface peat, causing high pore-water pressures and lubrication of the failure planes. Vegetation recolonization will probably follow a pattern similar to that observed on the adjacent earlier slides. 相似文献

Many techniques have been proposed for visualizing uncertainty in geospatial data. Previous empirical research on the effectiveness of visualizations of geospatial uncertainty has focused primarily on user intuitions rather than objective measures of performance when reasoning under uncertainty. Framed in the context of Google’s blue dot, we examined the effectiveness of four alternative visualizations for representing positional uncertainty when reasoning about self-location data. Our task presents a mobile mapping scenario in which GPS satellite location readings produce location estimates with varying levels of uncertainty. Given a known location and two smartphone estimates of that known location, participants were asked to judge which smartphone produces the better location reading, taking uncertainty into account. We produced visualizations that vary by glyph type (uniform blue circle with border vs. Gaussian fade) and visibility of a centroid dot (visible vs. not visible) to produce the four visualization formats. Participants viewing the uniform blue circle are most likely to respond in accordance with the actual probability density of points sampled from bivariate normal distributions and additionally respond most rapidly. Participants reported a number of simple heuristics on which they based their judgments, and consistency with these heuristics was highly predictive of their judgments. 相似文献

The invasive ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi (Agassiz), which was transported from the Black Sea into the Caspian Sea at the end of the 1990s, has negatively affected the ecosystem of the Caspian Sea. Zooplankton abundance, biomass and species composition were evaluated on the Iranian coast of the Caspian Sea during 2001–2006. A total of 18 merozooplankton (13 species composed of larvae of benthic animals) and holozooplankton (four Copepoda and one Cladocera) species were identified. The total number of zooplankton species found here was 50% less than in a previous investigation performed in the same region in 1996 before the introduction of Mnemiopsis leidyi into the Caspian Sea. Cladocera species seemed to be highly affected by the invasion of Mnemiopsis leidyi; only one species, Podon polyphemoides, remained in the study area, whereas 24 Cladocera species were found in the study carried out in 1996. Whereas among the Copepoda Eurytemora minor, Eurytemora grimmi, Calanipeda aquae dulcis and Acartia tonsa that were abundant before the Mnemiopsis leidyi invasion, only A. tonsa (copepodites and adults) dominated the inshore and offshore waters after the invasion. The maximum in zooplankton abundance (22,088 ± 24,840 ind·m?3) and biomass (64.1 ± 56.8 mg·m?3) were recorded in December 2001 and August 2004, respectively. The annual mean zooplankton abundance during 2001–2006 was in the range of 3361–8940 ind·m?3; this was two‐ to five‐fold less than the zooplankton abundance in 1996. During 2001–2006, the highest abundance and biomass of Mnemiopsis leidyi were observed during summer‐autumn months coincident with warm temperatures and generally when the abundance of other zooplankton organisms was low. 相似文献

AbstractThe turbidite-filled, Lower Devonian Cobar Basin is characterised through a detrital zircon study. Uranium–Pb age data for six samples were combined with published data to show the basin has a unique age spectrum characterised by a subordinate Middle Ordovician (ca 470?Ma) peak superimposed on a dominant ca 500?Ma peak. Maximum depositional ages for 3 samples were ca 425?Ma, close to the published Lower Devonian (Lochkovian 419–411?Ma) biostratigraphic ages. A minor ca 1000?Ma zircon population was also identified. The major source of the 500?Ma zircons was probably the local Ordovician metasedimentary basement, which was folded, thickened and presumably exposed during the ca 440?Ma Benambran Orogeny. The ca 470?Ma age peak reflects derivation from Middle Ordovician (Phase 2) rocks of the Macquarie Arc to the east. The I-type Florida Volcanics, located ~50?km eastward from the Cobar Basin, contains distinctive Middle and Late Ordovician zircon populations, considered to be derived from deeply underthrust Macquarie Arc crust. Protracted silicic magmatism occurred before, during and after Cobar Basin deposition, indicating that the basin formed by subduction-related processes in a back-arc setting, rather than as a continental rift. 相似文献
