In this work, the large-wave simulation (LWS) method is adapted for application in spilling wave breaking over a constant slope beach. According to LWS, large scales of velocities, pressure and free-surface elevation are numerically resolved, while the corresponding unresolved scale effects are taken into consideration by a subgrid scale (SGS) model for wave and eddy stresses. The model may be not fully applicable in very shallow water, close to the shoreline, where the unresolved, turbulent, free-surface oscillation is of the same order with the water depth. Time integration of the Euler equations is achieved by a two-stage fractional scheme, combined with a hybrid scheme for spatial discretization, consisting of finite difference and pseudospectral approximation methods. Model parameters are calibrated by comparison to available experimental data of free-surface elevation and velocities in the surf zone for cross-shore incoming waves. The action of the wave SGS stresses in the outer coastal and surf zones initiates breaking and generates appropriate vorticity, in the form of an eddy structure (surface roller), at the breaking wavefront. At incipient breaking, both advection and gravity contribute to the vorticity flux at the free surface, while only after the full development of the surface roller, the effect of advection becomes stronger. The SGS model is also utilized to simulate propagation, refraction and breaking of oblique incoming waves. The gradual breaking and dissipation of wave crestlines and the surface roller structure along the breaking wavefront are automatically captured without any empirical input, such as data for the roller shape or the wave propagation angle at breaking.  相似文献

This is the first landslide inventory map in the island of Lefkada integrating satellite imagery and reports from field surveys. In particular, satellite imagery acquired before and after the 2003 earthquake were collected and interpreted with the results of the field survey that took place 1 week after this strong (Mw?=?6.3) event. The developed inventory map indicates that the density of landslides decreases from west to east. Furthermore, the spatial distribution of landslides was statistically analyzed in relation to the geology and topography for investigating their influence to landsliding. This was accomplished by overlaying these causal factors as thematic layers with landslide distribution data. Afterwards, weight values of each factor were calculated using the landslide index method and a landslide susceptibility map was developed. The susceptibility map indicates that the highest susceptibility class accounts for 38 % of the total landslide activity, while the three highest classes that cover the 10 % of the surface area, accounting for almost the 85 % of the active landslides. Our model was validated by applying the approaches of success and prediction rate to the dataset of landslides that was previously divided into two groups based on temporal criteria, estimation and validation group. The outcome of the validation dataset was that the highest susceptibility class concentrates 18 % of the total landslide activity. However, taking into account the frequency of landslides within the three highest susceptibility classes, more than 85 %, the model is characterized as reliable for a regional assessment of earthquake-induced landslides hazard.  相似文献

The effect of the shear and normal stress free surface boundary conditions on the laminar flow induced by wave propagation is discussed. The approximate form of the boundary conditions, as used by (Lin, P., Zhang, W., 2008. Numerical simulation of wave-induced laminar boundary layers. Coast. The October 2005 series of earthquakes that occurred in the Gulf of Siğaçik (western Turkey) reveal the operation of pure strike-slip faults, as evidenced from the 49 focal mechanisms we determined, in a region dominated by N–S extension and bounded by well-documented graben structures. The sequence is characterized by the occurrence of three moderate size events (17 October 2005, 05:45 UTC, Mw 5.4; 17 October 2005, 09:46 UTC, Mw 5.8; and 20 October 2005, 21:40 UTC, Mw 5.8) with an eastward propagation and close spatial separation (< 6 km). We relocated over 200 aftershocks, combining phases from the Greek and Turkish seismological networks, which align roughly in a NE–SW cloud, but considerably spread after the first day of the sequence, indicating the simultaneous activation of multiple structures nearly orthogonal to the main rupture. It is hard to relate the occurrence of the events to any of the previously mapped faults in the region. The region of occurrence is a well-known geothermal area which implies that it is in a very unstable state, with the fault systems close to rupture and very sensitive to stress perturbations. Here we showed that the sequence is adequately explained by static stress triggering. It is worth noting that this sequence, though moderate in magnitudes, provides stronger evidence for the operation of sub-parallel strike-slip faults in the central Aegean Sea–western Turkey, north of the volcanic arc, which seem to be optimally oriented in the regional stress field and facilitate the Anatolia motion into the Aegean Sea.  相似文献

Stable oxygen isotopes in precipitation contain meaningful environmental information on a synoptic scale and can be applied to diagnose hydrometeorological processes.A series of rainstorms occurred at the southern Tianshan Mountains during the period from May to June 2013,and the event-based precipitation was sampled along the mountain range from west to east.Based on δ18 O values in precipitation samples as well as the corresponding meteorological parameters,the moisture transport paths during the sampling period were identified.In late-May(stage 1),isotopes in precipitation collected generally showed a depleting trend.In mid-June(stage 2),there was no coherent trend of isotopes in precipitation for these stations,and only isotope values in Aksu showed a continually depleting trend.Checking other meteorological proxies during the sampling period,the event-based precipitation isotopes sensitively reflected the moisture process.In central Asia,both the westerly and monsoon moisture can be delivered to cause extreme precipitation events,and the isotopic information provides an alternative tool to investigate the atmospheric processes.  相似文献

On 27 February 2010, a magnitude M w?=?8.8 earthquake occurred off the coast of Chile??s Maule region causing substantial damage and loss of life. Ancestral tsunami knowledge from the 1960 event combined with education and evacuation exercises prompted most coastal residents to spontaneously evacuate after the earthquake. Many of the tsunami victims were tourists in coastal campgrounds. The international tsunami survey team (ITST) was deployed within days of the event and surveyed 800?km of coastline from Quintero to Mehuín and the Pacific Islands of Santa María, Mocha, Juan Fernández Archipelago, and Rapa Nui (Easter). The collected survey data include more than 400 tsunami flow depth, runup and coastal uplift measurements. The tsunami peaked with a localized runup of 29?m on a coastal bluff at Constitución. The observed runup distributions exhibit significant variations on local and regional scales. Observations from the 2010 and 1960 Chile tsunamis are compared.  相似文献

The satellite-based water vapor stable isotope measurements have been widely used in modern hydrological and atmospheric studies. Their use is important for arid areas where the precipitation events are limited, and below-cloud evaporation is strong. This study presents the spatial and temporal characteristics of water vapor isotopologue across the Tianshan Mountains in arid central Asia using the NASA Aura Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES). The near-surface water vapor stable isotopes are enriched in summer and depleted in winter, consistent with the seasonality of precipitation isotopes. From the surface to 200 hPa, the isotope values in water vapor show a decreasing trend as the atmospheric pressure decreases and elevation rises. The vapor isotope values in the lower atmosphere in the southern basin of the Tianshan Mountains are usually higher than that in the northern basin, and the seasonal difference in vapor isotopes is slightly more significant in the southern basin. In addition, bottom vapor isotopologue in summer shows a depletion trend from west to east, consistent with the rainout effect of the westerly moisture path in central Asia. The isotopic signature provided by the TES is helpful to understand the moisture transport and below-cloud processes influencing stable water isotopes in meteoric water.  相似文献

The Atalanti Fault is a large active normal fault segment inside the Gulf of Evia Rift system (Central Greece), that last ruptured during the April 1894 earthquake sequence. Using structural and geomorphological interpretations of digitally processed Landsat TM satellite imagery, two regions of i) low topography, ii) minimum hinterland development and iii) transverse bedrock ridge development, 34 kilometres apart were identified; these regions are suggested to be segment boundaries constraining the length of the fault. From throw profiles and displaced syn-rift strata, we estimate a minimum slip of 810m at the central region of the fault (Tragana), increasing to a value of 1200 meters within the Asprorema embayment area. These figures averaged over a time span of 3 million years (age of oldest offset syn-rift), yield mean slip rates of at least 0.27 to 0.4 mm/year.Field studies were also conducted along the length of the Atalanti Fault Segment to reexamine and map the 1894 ruptures. The surface break is only preserved locally where the footwall comprises a resistant bedrock lithology (limestone), whilst the rest of the rupture noted in historical records propagated along the contact with the volcanic pre-rift, as well as within the syn-rift, and has since been eradicated due to man-made changes in surface morphology. The surface breaks appear not to have crossed over the segment boundaries that we propose, but seem to have ruptured the full length of the Atalanti Fault Segment, that is, 34km. These observations suggest that the 1894 rupture is the longest mapped within Central Greece. However, it remains unclear whether the ruptures were produced solely by the 27/4/1894 earthquake, or by two events, one week apart. We discuss the implications for fault-behavioural models and seismic hazards for the Atalanti area.  相似文献

The static displacement field of the Athens 1999 earthquake has been numerically modeled by a BEM method and analysed from SAR interferometry images with compatible results: (a) for a fault that reaches the surface the subsidence field coincides with the hangingwall domain of the Fili neotectonic normal fault with maximum amplitude, d max, 5.5–7 cm, which is consistent with the possibly co-seismic displacement of 6–10 cm observed in the field, the average fault dislocation of 5–8 cm found by the application of circular source models, and the displacement up to 6 cm predicted by empirical relations between magnitude and displacement; the field of uplift covers the footwall domain of the fault with d max1.5 cm;d gradually decreases with distance from the fault at a gradient of 0.4 cm/km, (b) for a blind fault d max is only 1.8 and 0.3 cm in the hangingwall and footwall, respectively, and the decay gradient becomes 0.15 cm/km, (c) the total deformation area is 15 km × 15 km and the Fili fault, with a preferred mean dip of 60°, constitutes the natural boundary between the subsidence and uplift areas. The macroseismic field pattern is similar with that of the static ground deformation. The majority of intensity values VI (MM and EMS-98 scales), are distributed within the hangingwall of the Fili fault, while the highest intensities (VIII and IX) concentrate very close to the Fili fault within its hangingwall domain. A gradual decrease of the intensities with the distance from the Fili fault is evident. Because of the similarity between the intensity distribution pattern and the static ground deformation pattern, we make the hypothesis that the latter predicts well enough the main characteristics of the former although the ground displacement is dominated by relatively low frequency as compared to the ground acceleration.  相似文献
