Primary production in Lake Hayward, Western Australia, is dominated by benthic microbial communities, with limited planktonic
primary production. This study investigated the question of howArtemia, commonly regarded as simple, obligate, non-selective filter feeders, were able to survive in this system. Bacteria (heterotrophic
and autotrophic, filamentous and unicellular) were the major components in the diet of theArtemia in Lake Hayward. These bacteria were derived from bacterial aggregates in the water column and also from benthic mat material
(both still attached to the substrate and from pieces floating in the water column). Benthic diatoms were a substantial dietary
component of animals living in the unstratified shallow regions. Photosynthetic eukaryotic nanoplankton comprised a minor
component of the diet of thisArtemia population. Gut contents of a large number of animals and the results of a simple laboratory test indicated that these animals
utilise substrate-bound food resources. The results of the present study raises the question of the ecological significance

The South Canyon Fire of July 1994 burned 800 ha of vegetation on Storm King Mountain near Glenwood Springs, Colorado, USA.
On the night of 1 September 1994, in response to torrential rains, debris flows inundated seven areas along a 5-km length
of Interstate Highway 70. Mapping from aerial photographs, along with field observations and measurements, shows that the
September rainstorm eroded unconsolidated, burned surficial soil from the hillsides, flushed dry-ravel deposits from the tributary
channels, and transported loose, large material from the main channels. The hyperconcentrated flows and debris flows inundated
14 ha of Interstate Highway 70 with 70 000 m3 of material. Although the burned area was seeded in November 1994, the potential for continuing debris-flow activity remains.
Incision and entrainment of channel alluvium, as well as erosion of loose material from the hillslopes could result in future
debris- and hyperconcentrated-flow activity.

Distribution of seismic anisotropy in the subduction zone beneath the Wellington region, New Zealand
Shear wave splitting measurements from S arrivals of local earthquakes recorded at the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) broadband sensor SNZO are used to determine a basic anisotropic structure for the subduction zone in the Wellington region. With the use of high-frequency filters, fast anisotropic polarization ( φ ) and splitting time ( δt ) measurements typical of crustal anisotropy are evident, but the larger splitting expected from the mantle is often not resolved. The small splitting seen agrees well with the results of previous studies concerning shallow crustal anisotropy. With the use of lower-frequency filters, measurements more consistent with mantle anisotropy are made. Anisotropy of 4.4 ± 0.9 per cent with a fast polarization of 29° ± 38° is calculated for the subducting slab, from 20 to 70 km depth. Using this result in addition to the results of previous studies, a model is proposed. The model requires a frequency-dependent anisotropy of less than 1.4 per cent when measured with a period of ~2 s to be present in the sub-slab mantle.

This is at about 40° from the strike of the Hikurangi margin, and suggests a source of shear strain 40° removed from that found in the majority of the region. We present a careful analysis of the point-source detection limit of the AKARI All-Sky Survey in the WIDE-S 90-μm band near the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP). Timeline analysis is used to detect IRAS ( Infrared Astronomy Satellite ) sources and then a conversion factor is derived to transform the peak timeline signal to the interpolated 90-μm flux of a source. Combined with a robust noise measurement, the point-source flux detection limit at signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) > 5 for a single detector row is 1.1 ± 0.1 Jy which corresponds to a point-source detection limit of the survey of ∼0.4 Jy.

Layered ultramafic-gabbro bodies occur widely in the Archaean of northwest Scotland. They were metamorphosed at granulite or high amphibolite facies and were tectonically thinned and broken up during deformation. They comprise repeated ultramafic-gabbro layers, locally with Ni-poor sulphide-rich tops, each rhythmic unit showing decreasing MgO, Ni and normative anorthite with stratigraphic height. Major, trace and rare earth element data are presented for the range of rock types. In ultramafic rocks, MgO varies from 22 to 37 wt.%, Ni from 1000 to 2500 ppm and TiO2 from 0.08 to 0.40 wt.%, while the MgO content of the gabbros ranges from 14 to 6 wt.%. The REE patterns are flat to LREE enriched with no significant Eu anomalies. In ultramafic rocks REE are from 4 to 10 times chondrite, and in the gabbros LREE range from 8 to 30 times chondrite and HREE from 6 to 15 times chondrite. Study of incompatible elements (Ti, Zr, Y) which are relatively immobile during metamorphism shows that neither garnet nor hornblende were involved in fractionation. Trace element modelling shows it is improbable that the ultramafic rocks represent primary MgO-rich liquids even though their incompatible element contents are quite high. The chemical trends are interpreted in terms of olivine and pyroxene settling from a tholeiitic high-Mg magma with 15–20 wt.% MgO derived by 30–40% partial melting of an undepleted mantle.
