Despite abundant information on landslides, and on landslide hazard and risk, in Italy, little is known on the direct impact of event landslides on road networks and on the related economic costs. We investigated the physical and economic damage caused by two rainfall-induced landslide events in Central and Southern Italy, to obtain road restoration cost statistics. Using a GIS-based method, we exploited road maps and landslide event inventory maps to compute different metrics that quantify the impact of the landslide events on the natural landscape and on the road networks, by road type. The maps were used with cost data obtained from multiple sources, including local authorities, and specific legislation, to evaluate statistically the unit cost per metre of damaged road and the unit cost per square metre of damaging landslide, separately for main and secondary roads. The obtained unit costs showed large variations which we attribute to the different road types in the two study areas and to the different abundance of landslides. Our work confirms the long-standing conundrum of obtaining accurate landslide damage data and outlines the need for reliable, standardized methods to evaluate landslide damage and associated restoration costs that regional and local administrations can use rapidly in the aftermath of a landslide event. We conclude recommending that common standardized procedures to collect landslide cost data following each landslide event are established, in Italy and elsewhere. This will allow for more accurate and reliable evaluations of the economic costs of landslide events.  相似文献

The January 11, 1693 eastern Sicilyearthquake is comparable only with the December 28,1908 Messina Straits event in the Italian seismichistory as regards magnitude (M L 7), level ofdestruction and number of victims. The shock generateda strong tsunami, which hit the entire eastern coastof Sicily and particularly the town of Augusta. Theproblem of which fault was responsible for theearthquake is still open. Several hypotheses have beenformulated in the literature on the basis of differentkinds of geological, macroseismic and tectonic data,but a general agreement has not been reached yet. Animportant contribution to the discussion may come fromthe analysis of the tsunami data. In two previouspapers (Piatanesi et al., 1996; Piatanesi and Tinti,1998), the hydro-dynamical study of the tsunami basedon finite-element (FE) numerical simulations wascarried out taking into consideration mostlytheoretical faults, i.e. faults selected for theirsignificance in tsunami generation irrespective of thecorresponding geological evidence. This paper has tobe considered the continuation of the mentioned works.We have studied new sources proposed in theliterature, consistent with macroseismic data and/orgeological observations, and simulated thecorresponding tsunamis. We also built a new FE gridintroducing significant improvements in the coastlinerepresentation, and developed and applied a newalgorithm in order to account for the effect of thesea-bottom topography on the tsunami initialcondition. Some of the examined faults are located inthe Scordia-Lentini (SL) graben region and interceptthe coastline, others are placed in correspondencewith the Hyblaean-Malta (HM) escarpment and runparallel or sub-parallel to the coast. The conclusionof our work is that none of these faults respectsfully the available observations on tsunami, and thatthe faults exhibiting the best fit are those placed inthe SL region. It is worth stressing that our resultsare important for the assessment of seismic andtsunami hazard/risk in eastern Sicily, keeping also inmind that the 1693 earthquake has been selected as thereference event for an earthquake-scenario study inCatania and in south-eastern Sicily, called `CataniaProject', funded by CNR/GNDT (Consiglio Nazionaledelle Ricerche/Gruppo Nazionale Difesa dai Terremoti).  相似文献

Copper complexing capacity of cell exudates of Dunaliella salina in natural seawater culture medium was investigated in order to evaluate the influence of this organism on speciation of trace metals in seawater.Seawater samples were collected at 200 m and 2 miles off the coast and immediately filtered. Copper complexing capacity (CCCu) and stability constants (K′) of related cupric complexes were then measured. They were, respectively, 27.1 × 10−8 mol l−1 and 0.56 × 107 l mol−1 for the samples collected at 200 m and 12.8 × 10−8 mol l−1 and 6.10 × 107 l mol−1 for those collected 2 miles off the coast. A stock culture (20 ml, 106 cells ml−1) in log-phase was inoculated in 2 l of each sample of filtered natural seawater. The trend of cell influence was estimated on filtered culture medium by measuring CCCu and K′ after 1 h, 3 and 7 days. From the results it appears that CCCu increased with respect to time and this was related to the growth rate, indicating a certain relationship with cell metabolic activity.It can be concluded that a comparison between the culture referring to 200 m and 2 miles, respectively, shows that the former presents a CCCu two times higher than the latter while the K′ is ten times higher at 2 miles than that at 200 m.  相似文献

Abstract. This study examines the variation in microphytobenthos structure and functioning in an intertidal lagoon during a macroalgal covering event. Multivariate techniques, applied on the recorded data, highlighted a clear seasonal pattern except for the July sample. The sudden macroalgae ( Cladophora sp.) development, which occurred in that month, enabled us to identify the massive covering as a disturbance factor on the benthic ecosystem. This biotic anomaly affected benthic microalgal production and community respiration, shifting the ecosystem from a highly photoautotrophic to an heterotrophic condition as shown by the BTS Index. This trophic index is therefore a useful tool for identifying episodic stress events mainly in intertidal habitats.  相似文献

The vertical migration on mangrove trunks of the gastropod Cerithidea decollata was followed for 5 weeks, in a Kenyan mangrove. Most of the times, snails forage on the mud surface, during low tide, and climb back on trees well before the incoming tide. As soon as the sea retreats, the downward migration takes place and the snails spread again on the ground. The migratory behaviour of snails can vary widely, depending on the relative tide intensity, and different strategies can be exhibited. Individuals can spend several days on trees without migrating to the ground, around Spring Tides, or else, they might remain on the ground without bothering to migrate upwards, during Neap Tides, when the study area is not reached by the water. These irregular animal behaviours, relating to the complicated tide succession, can hardly be explained by the sole presence of an internal clock, and direct cues seem necessary to switch between different strategies, tuning the snails migratory behaviour to the actual local sea conditions.  相似文献

A spectrally filtered Optical Frequency Comb (OFC) laser is proposed as a versatile calibration source for astronomical spectrometers in the 1?C2 ??m spectral range. Such a source overcomes the limitations of current calibration lamps providing a uniform spectrum of equally spaced lines with similar intensity and extremely high long-term frequency stability. We present preliminary studies and results of a system which filters the OFC from a 100 MHz comb spacing to 16 GHz one, an adequate spacing for spectrometers with resolving power ????/???>30000. The first approach employs two Fabry-Perot cavities in series, made of dielectric coated mirrors, followed by a non-linear optical broadening system. The limitations of such a filtering process are discussed. These can be overcome by the second approach, based on filtering cavities with metallic coated mirrors.  相似文献

Modeling results of the water vapor plume produced by a comet impact on the Moon and of the resulting water ice deposits in the lunar cold traps are presented. The water vapor plume is simulated near the point of impact by the SOVA hydrocode and in the far field by the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method using as input the SOVA hydrocode solution at a fixed hemispherical interface. The SOVA hydrocode models the physics of the impact event such as the surface deformation and material phase changes during the impact. The further transport and retention processes, including gravity, photodestruction processes, and variable surface temperature with local polar cold traps, are modeled by the DSMC method for months after impact. In order to follow the water from the near field of the impact to the full planetary induced atmosphere, the 3D parallel DSMC code used a collision limiting scheme and an unsteady multi-domain approach. 3D results for the 45° oblique impact of a 2 km in diameter comet on the surface of the Moon at 30 km/s are presented. Most of the cometary water is lost due to escape just after impact and only ∼3% of the cometary water is initially retained on the Moon. Early downrange focusing of the water vapor plume is observed but the later material that is moving more slowly takes on a more symmetric shape with time. Several locations for the point of impact were investigated and final retention rates of ∼0.1% of the comet mass were observed. Based on the surface area of the cold traps used in the present simulations, ∼1 mm of ice would have accumulated in the cold traps after such an impact. Estimates for the total mass of water accumulated in the polar cold traps over 1 byr are consistent with recent observations.  相似文献

Abstract

Widespread Hercynian west-directed thrusting and west-facing folds, until now only reported in a limited area, are ubiquitous in the Sarrabus unit, southeastern Sardinia. Intense thrusting and imbrication in the higher tectonic levels of the Sarrabus unit potentially originated during west-directed thrusting of higher tectonic units, which have been eroded. The floor thrust of the Sarrabus unit, the Villasalto thrust, is a west- directed thrust that places the Sarrabus unit above the Gerrei and Meana Sardo units. East-west shortening in southeastern Sardinia followed north-south shortening in central Sardinia and internal deformation in the Castello Medusa-Riu Gruppa, Gerrei, Meana Sardo and Barbagia units. After restoration of movement along the Villasalto thrust, the Sarrabus unit is located east of the Gerrei and Meana Sardo unit. Despite human is an increasingly significant component of the hydrologic cycle in many river basins, most hydrologic models are still developed to accurately reproduce the natural processes and ignore the effect of human activities on the watershed response. This results in non‐stationary model forecast errors and poor predicting performance every time these models are used in non‐pristine watersheds. In the last decade, the representation of human activities in hydrological models has been extensively studied. However, mathematical models integrating the human and the natural dimension are not very common in hydrological applications and nearly unknown in the day‐to‐day practice. In this paper, we propose a new simple data‐driven flow forecast correction method that can be used to simultaneously tackle forecast errors from structural, parameter and input uncertainty, and errors that arise from neglecting human‐induced alterations in conceptual rainfall–runoff models. The correction system is composed of two layers: (i) a classification system that, based on the current flow condition, detects whether the source of error is natural or human induced and (ii) a set of error correction models that are alternatively activated, each tailored to the specific source of errors. As a case study, we consider the highly anthropized Aniene river basin in Italy, where a flow forecasting system is being established to support the operation of a hydropower dam. Results show that, even by using very basic methods, namely if‐then classification rules and linear correction models, the proposed methodology considerably improves the forecasting capability of the original hydrological model. Natural hazards and disasters can cause major accidents in chemical and process installations. These so-called Natech accidents can result in hazardous-materials releases due to damage to process and storage units, or pipes. In order to understand the dynamics of Natech events, accidents triggered by earthquakes, floods and lightning recorded in industrial accident databases were analysed. This allowed the identification of the most vulnerable equipment types, their modes of failure due to natural-event impact and the final accident scenarios. Moreover, lessons learned for future accident prevention and mitigation were derived. The analysis showed that pipes and storage tanks are the most vulnerable equipment for earthquakes, floods and lightning, calling for more research of equipment behaviour under natural-event loading. The damage modes and states are strongly dependent on the characteristics of the impacting natural event. Toxic dispersion, fires and explosions were observed as a consequence of all three types of analysed natural events. In the case of floods, two additional scenarios were identified. These are water contamination and the formation of toxic and/or flammable vapours upon reaction of the released chemicals with the floodwaters. The overall number of recorded Natech accidents was found to range from 2 to 5% of all reported accidents in the analysed databases.  相似文献
