Sedimentation rates were determined for the northern Gulf of Mexico margin sediments at water depths ranging from 770 to 3560 m, using radiocarbon determinations of organic matter. Resulting sedimentation rates ranged from 3 to 15 cm/kyr, decreasing with increasing water depth. These rates agree with long-term sedimentation rates estimated previously using stratigraphic methods, and with estimates of sediment delivery rates by the Mississippi River to the northern Gulf of Mexico, but are generally higher by 1–2 orders of magnitude than those estimated by 210Pbxs methods. Near-surface slope sediments from 2737 m water depth in the Mississippi River fan were much older than the rest. They had minimum 14C ages of 16–27 kyr and δ13C values ranging from −24‰ to −26.5‰, indicating a terrestrial origin of organic matter. The sediments from this site were thus likely deposited by episodic mass wasting of slope sediment through the canyon, delineating the previously suggested main pathway of sediment and clay movement to abyssal Gulf sediments. 相似文献

A budget of the standing stocks and cycling of organic carbon associated with the sea floor has been generated for seven sites across a 3-km depth gradient in the NE Gulf of Mexico, based on a series of reports by co-authors on specific biotic groups or processes. The standing stocks measured at each site were bacteria, Foraminifera, metazoan meiofauna, macrofauna, invertebrate megafauna, and demersal fishes. Sediment community oxygen consumption (SCOC) by the sediment-dwelling organisms was measured at each site using a remotely deployed benthic lander, profiles of oxygen concentration in the sediment pore water of recovered cores and ship-board core incubations. The long-term incorporation and burial of organic carbon into the sediments has been estimated using profiles of a combination of stable and radiocarbon isotopes. The total stock estimates, carbon burial, and the SCOC allowed estimates of living and detrital carbon residence time within the sediments, illustrating that the total biota turns over on time scales of months on the upper continental slope but this is extended to years on the abyssal plain at 3.6 km depth. The detrital carbon turnover is many times longer, however, over the same depths. A composite carbon budget illustrates that total carbon biomass and associated fluxes declined precipitously with increasing depth. Imbalances in the carbon budgets suggest that organic detritus is exported from the upper continental slope to greater depths offshore.The respiration of each individual “size” or functional group within the community has been estimated from allometric models, supplemented by direct measurements in the laboratory. The respiration and standing stocks were incorporated into budgets of carbon flow through and between the different size groups in hypothetical food webs. The decline in stocks and respiration with depth were more abrupt in the larger forms (fishes and megafauna), resulting in an increase in the relative predominance of smaller sizes (bacteria and meiofauna) at depth. We present a multiwavelength study of the formation of massive stellar clusters, their emergence from cocoons of gas and dust, and their feedback on surrounding matter. Using data that span from radio to optical wavelengths, including Spitzer and Hubble Space Telescope ACS observations, we examine the population of young star clusters in the central starburst region of the irregular Wolf–Rayet galaxy IC4662. We model the radio-to-infrared (IR) spectral energy distributions of embedded clusters to determine the properties of their Hii regions and dust cocoons (sizes, masses, densities, temperatures), and use near-IR and optical data with mid-IR spectroscopy to constrain the properties of the embedded clusters themselves (mass, age, extinction, excitation, abundance). The two massive star-formation regions in IC4662 are excited by stellar populations with ages of ~4 Myr and masses of ~3×105 M⊙ (assuming a Kroupa initial mass function). They have high excitation and subsolar abundances, and they may actually be comprised of several massive clusters rather than the single monolithic massive compact objects known as ‘super star clusters’ (SSCs). Mid-IR spectra reveal that these clusters have very high extinction values, A V ~20–25 mag, and that the dust in IC4662 is well mixed with the emitting gas, not in a foreground screen. 相似文献

Data from the Cassini plasma spectrometer (CAPS) electron spectrometer (ELS) have been found to be contaminated with an energy-independent background count rate which has been associated with radiation sources on Cassini. In this paper we describe this background radiation and quantitatively assess its impact on numerically integrated electron moments. The general properties of such a background and its effects on numerical moments are derived. The properties of the ELS background are described and a model for the background presented. A model to generate synthetic ELS spectra is presented and used to evaluate the density and temperature of pure noise and then extended to include ambient distributions. It is shown that the presence of noise produces a saturation of the electron density and temperature at quasi-constant values when the instrument is at background, but that these noise level moments are dependent on the floating spacecraft potential and the orientation of the ELS instrument with respect to the spacecraft. When the ambient distribution has a poor signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) the noise determines the density and temperature; however, as the SNR increases (increasing primarily with density) the density and temperature tend to those of the ambient distribution. It is also shown that these noise effects produce highly artificial density-temperature inverse correlations. A method to subtract this noise is presented and shown to correct for the presence of the noise. Simulated error estimates for the density and temperature are also presented. The analysis described in this paper not only applies to weak background noise, but also to more significant penetrating backgrounds such as those in radiation belt regions of planetary magnetospheres. 相似文献

Arguments over the extinction of Pleistocene megafauna have become particularly polarised in recent years. Causes for the extinctions are widely debated with climate change, human hunting and/or habitat modification, or a combination of those factors, being the dominant hypotheses. However, a lack of a spatially constrained chronology for many megafauna renders most hypotheses difficult to test. Here, we present several new U/Th dates for a series of previously undated, megafauna-bearing localities from southeastern Queensland, Australia. The sites were previously used to argue for or against various megafauna extinction hypotheses, and are the type localities for two now-extinct Pleistocene marsupials (including the giant koala, Phascolarctos stirtoni). The new dating allows the deposits to be placed in a spatially- and temporally constrained context relevant to the understanding of Australian megafaunal extinctions. The results indicate that The Joint (Texas Caves) megafaunal assemblage is middle Pleistocene or older (>292 ky); the Cement Mills (Gore) megafaunal assemblage is late Pleistocene or older (>53 ky); and the Russenden Cave Bone Chamber (Texas Caves) megafaunal assemblage is late Pleistocene (~55 ky). Importantly, the new results broadly show that the sites date prior to the hypothesised megafaunal extinction ‘window’ (i.e., ~30–50 ky), and therefore, cannot be used to argue exclusively for or against human/climate change extinction models, without first exploring their palaeoecological significance on wider temporal and spatial scales. 相似文献

An accurate representation of permeability anisotropy is needed to model the rate and direction of groundwater flow correctly.
We develop a wavelet analysis technique that can be used to characterize principal directions of anisotropy in both stationary
and non-stationary permeability fields. Wavelet analysis involves the integral transform of a field using a wavelet as a kernel.
The wavelet is shifted, scaled, and rotated to analyze different locations, sizes, and orientations of the field. The wavelet
variance is used to identify scales and orientations that dominate the field. If the field is non-stationary, such that different
zones of the field are characterized by different dominant scales or orientations, the wavelet variance can identify all dominant
scales and orientations if they are distinct. If the dominant scales and orientations of different zones are similar, the
wavelet variance identifies only the dominant scale and orientation of the primary zone. In this paper, we present a combined
wavelet analysis and filtering approach to identify all dominant scales and orientations in a non-stationary permeability

A workshop organized in French Polynesia in November 2004 allowed reviewing the current methods to model the three-dimensional hydrodynamic circulation in semi-enclosed atoll lagoons for aquaculture applications. Mollusk (e.g. pearl oyster, clam) aquaculture is a major source of income for South Pacific countries such as French Polynesia or Cook Islands. This aquaculture now requires a better understanding of circulation patterns to improve the spatial use of the lagoons, especially to define the best area to set larvae collectors. The pelagic larval duration of the relevant species (<20 days) and the size of the semi-closed lagoons (few hundreds of km2) drive the specifications of the model in terms of the spatial and temporal scale. It is considered that, in contrast with fish, mollusk larvae movements are limited and that their cycle occurs completely in the lagoon, without an oceanic stage. Atolls where aquaculture is productive are generally well-bounded, or semi-closed, without significant large and deep openings to the ocean. Nevertheless part of the lagoon circulation is driven by oceanic water inputs through the rim, ocean swells, tides and winds. Therefore, boundary conditions of the lagoon system are defined by the spatial structure of a very shallow rim (exposition and number of hoas), the deep ocean swell climate, tides and wind regimes. To obtain a realistic 3D numerical model of lagoon circulation with adequate forcing, it is thus necessary to connect in an interdisciplinary way a variety of methods (models, remote sensing and in situ data collection) to accurately represent the different components of the lagoon system and its specific boundary conditions. We review here the current methods and tools used to address these different components for a hypothetical atoll of the Tuamotu Archipelago (French Polynesia), representative of the semi-closed lagoons of the South Pacific Ocean. Assessing the use of global land cover data for guiding large area population distribution modelling
Gridded population distribution data are finding increasing use in a wide range of fields, including resource allocation,
disease burden estimation and climate change impact assessment. Land cover information can be used in combination with detailed
settlement extents to redistribute aggregated census counts to improve the accuracy of national-scale gridded population data.
In East Africa, such analyses have been done using regional land cover data, thus restricting application of the approach
to this region. If gridded population data are to be improved across Africa, an alternative, consistent and comparable source
of land cover data is required. Here these analyses were repeated for Kenya using four continent-wide land cover datasets
combined with detailed settlement extents and accuracies were assessed against detailed census data. The aim was to identify
the large area land cover dataset that, combined with detailed settlement extents, produce the most accurate population distribution
data. The effectiveness of the population distribution modelling procedures in the absence of high resolution census data
was evaluated, as was the extrapolation ability of population densities between different regions. Results showed that the
use of the GlobCover dataset refined with detailed settlement extents provided significantly more accurate gridded population
data compared to the use of refined AVHRR-derived, MODIS-derived and GLC2000 land cover datasets. This study supports the
hypothesis that land cover information is important for improving population distribution model accuracies, particularly in
countries where only coarse resolution census data are available. Obtaining high resolution census data must however remain
the priority. With its higher spatial resolution and its more recent data acquisition, the GlobCover dataset was found as
the most valuable resource to use in combination with detailed settlement extents for the production of gridded population

The widespread occurrence of microbialites in the last deglacial reef frameworks (16–6 Ka BP) implies that the accurate study of their development patterns is of prime importance to unravel the evolution of reef architecture through time and to reconstruct the reef response to sea-level variations and environmental changes.The present study is based on the sedimentological and chronological analysis (14C AMS dating) of drill cores obtained during the IODP Expedition #310 “Tahiti Sea Level” on the successive terraces which typify the modern reef slopes from Tahiti. It provides a comprehensive data base to investigate the microbialite growth patterns (i.e. growth rates and habitats), to analyze their roles in reef frameworks and to reconstruct the evolution of the reef framework architecture during sea-level rise.The last deglacial reefs from Tahiti are composed of two distinctive biological communities: (1) the coralgal communities including seven assemblages characterized by various growth forms (branching, robust branching, massive, tabular and encrusting) that form the initial frameworks and (2) the microbial communities developed in the primary cavities of those frameworks, a few meters (1.5 to 6 m) below the living coral reef surface, where they heavily encrusted the coralgal assemblages to form microbialite crusts. The dating results demonstrate the occurrence of two distinctive generations of microbialites: the “reefal microbialites” which developed a few hundred years after coralgal communities in shallow-water environments, whereas the “slope microbialites” grew a few thousands of years later in significantly deeper water conditions after the demise of coralgal communities.The development of microbialites was controlled by the volume and the shape of the primary cavities of the initial reef frameworks determined by the morphology and the packing of coral colonies. The most widespread microbialite development occurred in frameworks dominated by branching, thin encrusting, tabular and robust branching coral colonies which built loose and open frameworks typified by a high porosity (> 50%). In contrast, their growth was minimal in compact coral frameworks formed by massive and thick encrusting corals where primary cavities yielded a low porosity (~ 30%) and could not host a significant microbialite expansion. 相似文献
