A regional coupled atmosphere–ocean model was developed to study the role of air–sea interactions in the simulation of the
Indian summer monsoon. The coupled model includes the regional climate model (RegCM3) as atmospheric component and the regional
ocean modeling system (ROMS) as oceanic component. The two-way coupled model system exchanges sea surface temperature (SST)
from the ocean to the atmospheric model and surface wind stress and energy fluxes from the atmosphere to the ocean model.
The coupled model is run for four years 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2003 and the results are compared with observations and atmosphere-only
model runs employing Reynolds SSTs as lower boundary condition. It is found that the coupled model captures the main features
of the Indian monsoon and simulates a substantially more realistic spatial and temporal distribution of monsoon rainfall compared
to the uncoupled atmosphere-only model. The intraseasonal oscillations are also better simulated in the coupled model compared
to the atmosphere-only model. These improvements are due to a better representation of the feedbacks between the SST and convection
and highlight the importance of air–sea coupling in the simulation of the Indian monsoon. 相似文献

This paper discusses the observations of the Atmospheric Surface Layer (ASL) parameters during the solar eclipse of August
11th, 1999. Intensive surface layer experiments were conducted at Ahmedabad (23‡21′N, 72‡36′E), the western part of India,
which was close to the totality path. This rare event provided by nature is utilised to document the surface layer effects
during the eclipse period using measurements of high frequency fluctuations of temperature, tri-axial wind components as well
as mean parameters such as temperature, humidity, wind speed and subsoil temperature. Analysis showed that during the eclipse
period, the turbulence parameters were affected leading to the suppression of the turbulence process, the main dynamic process
in the atmospheric boundary layer, while the mean parameters showed variations within the natural variability of the observational
period. The spectra of the wind components and temperature indicated decrease in spectral power by one order in magnitude
during the eclipse period. The rate of dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy is found to decrease by more than one order
during the eclipse period. The stability parameter showed a change from unstable to stable condition during the period of

A technique has been developed to evaluate the dynamic pressures on cylindrical structures due to irregular waves based on McCamy and Fuchs linear diffraction theory and principle of superposition. Experiments have been conducted in Hydraulic Engineering Laboratory, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras to examine the dynamic pressures excited by irregular waves on circular cylinders of large diameter. The pressures around the cylinder at representative locations were measured and compared with calculated pressures. The spectral density functions computed from pressure time series measured in the laboratory agree well with the calculated pressure spectral densities. The agreement is good and encouraging. 相似文献

Competitive sorption of estriol (E3) and 17α‐ethinylestradiol (EE2) was studied on activated charcoal. Better sorption of E3 (88.9%) and EE2 (69.5%) was observed with single‐solute sorption system than with bi‐solute sorption system. Single‐solute sorption kinetics of E3 and EE2 were evaluated with two (Langmuir and Freundlich) and three (dual mode and Song) parameter models. Freundlich model (R2, 0.9915 (E3); 0.9875 (EE2)) showed good prediction compared to other models for single‐solute sorption. Adsorption capacity documented reduced efficacy (86.4% (E3); 65.9% (EE2)) due to induced competitive behavior between the estrogens in aqueous phase. Bi‐solute adsorption kinetics of E3 and EE2 were described by IAST with two and three parameter models. Among these models, IAST‐Freundlich model (R2, 0.9765 (E3); 0.9985 (EE2)) was best in predicting bi‐solute sorption of E3 and EE2 by activated charcoal. All these models showed favorable representation of both single‐ and bi‐solute sorption behaviors. 相似文献

Generation and propagation of internal waves (IWs) in the coastal waters of the extended shelf of the western Bay of Bengal are investigated for late winter by using the Massachusetts Institute of Technology General Circulation Model (MITgcm). The model is forced with astronomical tides and daily winds. Monthly climatological temperature and salinity fields are used as initial conditions. The simulations are compared with time series observations of temperature and currents from acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) and conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) moored at three locations south of Gopalpur: two at a local depth of 100 m and another at 400-m depth during 19–21 February 2012. The comparison of the spectral estimates for the time series of temperature from the model and observations are in reasonable agreement for the near-tidal frequency waves. The peak of temperature spectra is always found near the shelf break region which steadily lost its intensity over the continental shelf. The calculation of Richardson number reflected the presence of local mixing due to density overturning in the shelf region. To understand further the generation and propagation of internal tides in the region, energy flux and conversion of barotropic-to-baroclinic M2 tidal energy are examined. The model simulations suggest that the internal tide is generated all along the shelf slope. The energy flux analysis shows that the internal tides propagate to either side of the generation sites. 相似文献

Ex‐situ bioremediation of real‐field crude petroleum sludge was evaluated to elucidate the role of co‐culture (bioaugmentation) and external nutrients supplementation (biostimulation) under anaerobic microenvironment. Maximum removal of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) was observed by integrating biostimulation with bioaugmentation (R5, 44.01%) followed by bioaugmentation alone (R4, 34.47%), co‐substrate supplemented operations [R6, 23.36%; R3, 16.5%; R2, 9.88%] and control (R1, 4.36%). Aromatics fraction showed higher degradation in all the conditions studied. Fate of six selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was evaluated during bioremediation. Among these, four ring PAHs compounds showed good degradation by integration of biostimulation with bioaugmentation (R5) while bioaugmentation alone (R4) documented good degradation of three ring PAHs. Lower ring PAHs compounds showed good degradation with the application of biostimulation (R6). Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) detected the presence of known PAHs degrading microorganisms viz., Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Acido bacteria, Sulphur reducing bacteria Firmicutes, etc. Application of biostimulation and bioaugmentation strategies alone or in combinations documented noticeable influence on the degradation of petroleum sludge. 相似文献

Bentonite clays are proven to be attractive as buffer and backfill material in high-level nuclear waste repositories around the world. A quick estimation of swelling pressures of the compacted bentonites for different clay–water–electrolyte interactions is essential in the design of buffer and backfill materials. The theoretical studies on the swelling behavior of bentonites are based on diffuse double layer (DDL) theory. To establish theoretical relationship between void ratio and swelling pressure (e versus P), evaluation of elliptic integral and inverse analysis are unavoidable. In this paper, a novel procedure is presented to establish theoretical relationship of e versus P based on the Gouy–Chapman method. The proposed procedure establishes a unique relationship between electric potentials of interacting and non-interacting diffuse clay–water–electrolyte systems. A procedure is, thus, proposed to deduce the relation between swelling pressures and void ratio from the established relation between electric potentials. This approach is simple and alleviates the need for elliptic integral evaluation and also the inverse analysis. Further, application of the proposed approach to estimate swelling pressures of four compacted bentonites, for example, MX 80, Febex, Montigel and Kunigel V1, at different dry densities, shows that the method is very simple and predicts solutions with very good accuracy. Adsorption of Cr(VI) using native and chemically modified marine green macroalgae Codium tomentosum biomass and its adsorption kinetics were studied under specific conditions. Maximum Cr(VI) removal occurred at pH 2 for both untreated and acid-treated biomass. However, base-treated biomass exhibited maximum adsorption at pH 6 due to the hydrolysis of methyl esters present in the cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin molecules resulting in carboxyl groups (COO?) on the surface. The effect of adsorbent dose revealed that untreated and acid-treated biomass follows Henry’s linear isotherm, while base-treated biomass exhibited sigmoidal curve indicating energetic heterogeneity on the adsorbing surface. The monolayer adsorption capacity of untreated, acid-treated and base-treated biomasses was 5.032 ± 0.644, 5.445 ± 0.947, 3.814 ± 0.559 mg g?1, respectively. Adsorption was found to follow Ho and McKay’s pseudo-second-order kinetic model with decreasing pseudo-second-order rate constant (K 2, g mg?1 min?1) of 0.088 ± 0.037 (acid-treated), 0.019 ± 0.003 (untreated) and 0.012 ± 0.003 (base-treated). 相似文献

Surface layer temperature inversion in the south eastern Arabian Sea, during winter has been studied using Bathythermograph data collected from 1132 stations. It is found that the inversion in this area is a stable seasonal feature and the occurrence is limited to the coastal waters. The inversion layer is found to have thickness varying from 10 to 80 meters and gradient of 0.0–1.2°C. The causative factor for the inversion is identified to be the winter-time surface-advection of cold less saline Bay of Bengal water over the warm saline Arabian Sea water along the west coast of India. Finally, the possible forcing mechanism for such an advection was examined using a hydrographic section and wind observations along the west coast of India. 相似文献
