The hydrodynamic and sediment transport processes on the Dutch inner-shelf were studied on the basis of short- and medium-term (days, month) field experiments during fair-weather and storm conditions. The primary goal of this study was to identify the mechanisms that may be responsible for the formation and maintenance of the shoreface-connected ridges in the study area. The hydrodynamic field observations do not consistently support existing theoretical models explaining the formation of such ridges. Instead, the water motion appears to be dominated by wind- and density-driven effects. A review of literature indicates that other field studies also fail to observe the flow response expected from theory. Sediment transport during fair-weather is very episodic, with bed load transport slightly dominant over suspended load transport. The sediment transport processes during storms are dominated by the mean fluxes, with waves acting as a stirring mechanism. The contribution of wave-oscillatory fluxes cannot be neglected and may be directed with and against the waves. Long-wave fluxes are present, but very small.  相似文献

Basin modelling aims at reconstructing the time evolution of a sedimentary basin in order to make quantitative predictions of geological phenomena leading to hydrocarbon accumulations. It accounts for porous medium compaction, heat transfer, hydrocarbon generation and migration. These physical phenomena are modelled by partial differential equations [Schneider, F., Wolf, S., Faille, I., Pot, D. 2000. A 3D basin model for hydrocarbon potential evaluation: application to Congo offshore. Oil and Gas Science Technologie, Rev-IFP 55, 3–13] representing the mass balances of solid, fluids (water and oil) coupled with Darcy's law and a compaction law. These equations are discretized using a cell-centered Finite Volume method in space and an implicit Euler integration in time. At each time step, the resulting nonlinear system is solved using Newton's method ending up at each Newton iteration with the solution of a linear system which represents the most cpu-time-consuming part of the basin simulator.  相似文献

This paper shows the evolution of time-constrained two-dimensional scaled analogue models of doubly vergent thrust systems in the presence of syntectonic sedimentation. Two sets of experiments were considered: (1) the addition of a syntectonic layer composed of a polymer and overlying sand in the prowedge; and (2) the addition to the previous condition of a progradational sedimentary load. Results from the first set of experiments indicate that the foreland fold-and-thrust belt has a strong relationship with the competence of the syntectonic layers. When the competence is low, the deformation produces tight asymmetric detachment-folds. As the competence increases, the fold-and-thrust belt shows break-trough folds with longer and better defined foreland-vergence. Results from the second set of experiments indicate that structural vergence is determined by the sense of progradation of the syntectonic layers, and in the case of strong aggradation at the prowedge, extension and reactive diapirism form contemporaneously with the contraction. Three end-members are proposed for mountain front thrust systems formed in the presence of syntectonic polymer and sand sedimentation: (1) outcropping fold-and-thrust belt sequence, in the case of no syntectonic sedimentation; (2) long displacement blind-thrust sheets, in the case of under-filled basins and (3) short displacement blind-thrust sheets, in the case of over-filled basins. All results indicate that ductile units at the base of syntectonic layers increase the displacement of the underlying frontal thrusts at the prowedge, and reduce the critical taper. Results also indicate that at very high sedimentary rates and hyper-critical taper conditions the prowedge collapses. Conclusions drawn from this research may be applied as an analogue to foreland evolution and to evaluate hydrocarbon generation, migration, and entrapment in thrust belts in areas where seismic imaging is generally poor.  相似文献

Research into the properties of past geomagnetic fields (paleo-geomagnetism) has been carried out worldwide for over half a century. This research utilizes rocks which are to a varying degree inadequate for that purpose, and evaluation of the results is therefore not always on firm ground. One resource which can be utilized to constrain several aspects of the interpretation of other paleo-geomagnetic data, consists of stable primary remanence vectors in large homogeneous collections of dated fresh lava flows. We outline how the available remanence data from several thousand lavas in Iceland may be analysed in a semi-quantitative way to test some of current results, methodology and concepts of paleo-geomagnetism. Among topics where such analysis provides new insights, are the geomagnetic polarity time scale, the frequency distribution of virtual geomagnetic poles in latitude and longitude, and the relative intensity of the magnetic field as a function of virtual pole latitude. Comparison of the scatter in remanence intensities and in absolute paleointensity determinations on Icelandic lavas indicates, along with other evidence, that quality criteria for the latter are in need of revising. It is also confirmed here that long-term changes have occurred in the amplitude of the geomagnetic secular variation; they should be taken into account in studies on other properties of the paleo-geomagnetic field.  相似文献

Oryzias melastigma, also called O. dancena, is becoming a very useful model for estuarine and marine ecotoxicity studies. With O. melastigma being adopted by ILSI Health and Environmental Science Institute (HESI) for embryo toxicity testing, improved knowledge of biomarker based embryonic development becomes especially important for mechanism-based toxicity evaluations. Using whole mount in situ hybridization and immunostaining techniques together with widely used molecular markers, this study describes the molecular development of marine medaka embryos, focusing on the brain, eye, heart, pectoral fin, pancreas, liver, muscle and neuron system. These organs are targets of environmental pollutants that disrupt normal embryonic development in medaka and other fish.  相似文献

Analytical solutions of the momentum and energy equations for tidal flow are studied. Analytical solutions are well known for prismatic channels but are less well known for converging channels. As most estuaries have a planform with converging channels, the attention in this paper is fully focused on converging tidal channels. It will be shown that the tidal range along converging channels can be described by relatively simple expressions solving the energy and momentum equations (new approaches). The semi-analytical solution of the energy equation includes quadratic (nonlinear) bottom friction. The analytical solution of the continuity and momentum equations is only possible for linearized bottom friction. The linearized analytical solution is presented for sinusoidal tidal waves with and without reflection in strongly convergent (funnel type) channels. Using these approaches, simple and powerful tools (spreadsheet models) for tidal analysis of amplified and damped tidal wave propagation in converging estuaries have been developed. The analytical solutions are compared with the results of numerical solutions and with measured data of the Western Scheldt Estuary in the Netherlands, the Hooghly Estuary in India and the Delaware Estuary in the USA. The analytical solutions show surprisingly good agreement with measured tidal ranges in these large-scale tidal systems. Convergence is found to be dominant in long and deep-converging channels resulting in an amplified tidal range, whereas bottom friction is generally dominant in shallow converging channels resulting in a damped tidal range. Reflection in closed-end channels is important in the most landward 1/3 length of the total channel length. In strongly convergent channels with a single forward propagating tidal wave, there is a phase lead of the horizontal and vertical tide close to 90o, mimicking a standing wave system (apparent standing wave).  相似文献

With a rigid pile assumption, the equivalent top–down load–settlement curve constructed from the results of a bidirectional or bottom–up pile load test does not fully consider the total elastic shortening when all the load components from skin-friction and end-bearing are applied downward at the pile head. In effect, the equivalent curve constructed by the original method suggested from the Osterberg test showed a much stiffer curve compared to the top–down curve. Design charts are provided in this paper from the results of a parametric study on bored piles in order to approximately evaluate the λ-factor that is used to estimate the top–down pile shortening from the bottom–up shortening due to the skin-friction component of the load. It has been shown that the λ-factor varies with the distribution of the undrained shear strength profile, pile slenderness ratio, and mobilization of the skin-friction resistance. In addition, the pile shortening due to the end-bearing load component is added to the top settlements by treating the pile as an elastic column. A modified method for the construction of the equivalent top–down load–settlement curve is presented that considers the elastic pile shortening and validated with the measured top–down load–settlement curve from pile load tests.  相似文献

We investigate the complex relationship between small‐scale farming, urban‐rural remittances and rural development. We highlight a successful, innovative self‐reliance approach in which traditional farmers changed their mode of production, improved their income, and enhanced rural development, including urbanization, in Shubbola village of western Sudan. The major initial driver was investment from remittances by family members who had migrated to urban centers, thus overcoming the problem of access to credit/capital. Consequently, the increased use of tractor technology helped farmers overcome agricultural labor shortages, and increase their farm size and productivity. Increased income from remittances and farming broadened economic and social improvements, including lifestyle and the built environment. In the process, Shubbola has grown into a viable and vibrant town, providing its residents with diverse socioeconomic services and modern infrastructure. This case illustrates the potential of development from within with minimal direct input from the government, nongovernmental organizations, and international donors.  相似文献
