We analyze the reliability of the Lagrangian stochastic micromixing method in predicting higher-order statistics of the passive scalar concentration induced by an elevated source (of varying diameter) placed in a turbulent boundary layer. To that purpose we analyze two different modelling approaches by testing their results against the wind-tunnel measurements discussed in Part I (Nironi et al., Boundary-Layer Meteorology, 2015, Vol. 156, 415–446). The first is a probability density function (PDF) micromixing model that simulates the effects of the molecular diffusivity on the concentration fluctuations by taking into account the background particles. The second is a new model, named VP\(\varGamma \), conceived in order to minimize the computational costs. This is based on the volumetric particle approach providing estimates of the first two concentration moments with no need for the simulation of the background particles. In this second approach, higher-order moments are computed based on the estimates of these two moments and under the assumption that the concentration PDF is a Gamma distribution. The comparisons concern the spatial distribution of the first four moments of the concentration and the evolution of the PDF along the plume centreline. The novelty of this work is twofold: (i) we perform a systematic comparison of the results of micro-mixing Lagrangian models against experiments providing profiles of the first four moments of the concentration within an inhomogeneous and anisotropic turbulent flow, and (ii) we show the reliability of the VP\(\varGamma \) model as an operational tool for the prediction of the PDF of the concentration. 相似文献

An analytical procedure has been developed to measure in situ the 11 B/10 B ratio in terrestrial basaltic rocks and meteoritic chondrules having B concentration of less than 1 μg g?1 using a small radius ims3f ion microprobe. The central difficulties for these measurements are (i) the removal of the trace amount of B contamination introduced in the sample during polishing, (ii) the precise calibration of instrumental mass fractionation of B isotopes and (iii) the low count rates of 10 B and 11 B. Contamination experiments conducted with isotopically labelled B enriched in 10 B showed that ultrasonic cleaning in bi-distilled water (< 1 ng g?1 B) and pre-sputtering of the analysed area decrease B contamination to the level of 0.01 μg g?1. Analyses of isotope standards spanning a range of 11 B/10 B between 3.93 and 4.20 showed that instrumental mass fractionation was constant within? during one session of analyses. Repeated analyses of a standard glass showed a reproducibility of instrumental mass fractionation between February 1991 and October 1996 of 1.3. Taking into account all sources of error, boron isotope measurements are accurate to within 5 for meteoritic samples having B contents in the range 0.1 to 1 μg g?1. Analysis of 24 reference materials for B, Sm, Gd, H, has been carried out over several years, using prompt gamma neutron activation analysis. The results are compared with values obtained by other workers, in order to better calibrate these standards. Lithology variation is known to have a major control on landslide kinematics, but this effect may remain unnoticed due to low spatial coverage during investigation. The large clayey Avignonet landslide (French Alps) has been widely studied for more than 35 years. Displacement measurements at 38 geodetic stations over the landslide showed that the slide surface velocity dramatically increases below an elevation of about 700 m and that the more active zones are located at the bottom and the south of the landslide. Most of the geotechnical investigation was carried out in the southern part of the landslide where housing development occurred on lacustrine clay layers. In this study, new electrical prospecting all across the unstable area revealed the unexpected presence of a thick resistive layer covering the more elevated area and overlying the laminated clays, which is interpreted as the lower part of moraine deposits. The downslope lithological boundary of this layer was found at around 700 m asl. This boundary coincides with the observed changes in slide velocity and in surface roughness values computed from a LiDAR DTM acquired in 2006. This thick permeable upper layer constitutes a water reservoir, which is likely to influence the hydromechanical mechanism of the landslide. The study suggests a major control of vertical lithological variations on the landslide kinematics, which is highlighted by the relation between slide velocity and electrical resistivity. 相似文献

Existing GIS‐based least‐cost routefinding approaches can in some cases be confounded by linear features in the landscape whose crossing costs are high relative to other traversing costs found throughout the landscape. Unfortunately, such high‐cost linear features are not uncommon; they frequently occur in the form of hydrologic features whose crossing costs are high relative to costs of traversing the surrounding dry land. This study (1) enumerates the situations where existing approaches can fail, (2) proposes a simple method for overcoming the limitations of the existing approaches, and (3) conducts an experiment to assess the impact of the weaknesses of existing approaches and the magnitude of the differences between the results produced by existing and revised approaches. Our results show that in mountainous terrain, linear hydrologic features with high crossing costs can have a profound impact on least‐cost routes, and the choice of solution method has equally profound impacts on the optimal route produced by the analysis. 相似文献

Seismic data and cores from the Waitaki continental shelf, New Zealand, indicate a major reduction in terrigenous deposition
about 10,000 years ago when the accumulation of extensive marine sand wedges ceased. This change reflects the impact of lacustrine
traps on the main sediment supplier to the shelf, the Waitaki River. Prior to 10,000 years BP, lakes Ohau, Pukaki and Tekapo
were glaciated and glacio-fluvial detritus was fed directly to the river and shelf where marine deposition was ca. 6.8×106 t/yr. Following deglaciation, the newly created lakes acted as efficient sediment traps that denied the river 22.2×106 t/yr. Accordingly, modern shelf deposition is around 0.04×106 t/year. 相似文献

The Bounty Channel system is located within the Bounty Trough, a Cretaceous rift on the eastern edge of the New Zealand microcontinent. Today, the system is fed with sediment from the eastern South Island shelf, through the Otago Fan complex. The main Bounty Channel is about 800 km long and forms a sediment transport link between the continental margin and the distal Bounty Fan, located at the mouth of the Bounty Trough and onlapping onto abyssal oceanic crust. The Bounty Channel system has existed in its present setting since the inception of the Alpine Fault plate boundary in the mid-Cenozoic, while ancestral marine channel systems occur back to the Paleocene. 相似文献

A new type of control law is developed to steer an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) along a desired path. The methodology adopted for path-following deals explicitly with vehicle dynamics. Furthermore, it overcomes stringent initial condition constraints that are present in a number of path-following control strategies described in the literature. Controller design builds on Lyapunov theory and backstepping techniques. The resulting nonlinear feedback control law yields convergence of the path-following error trajectory to zero. Particles and particulate phosphorus (Pp) were studied along 4°W in the tropical south Atlantic, between Ivory Coast and 24°S. Seston concentrations in the upper layers (0–150 m) are about 0.350 mg/l; they decrease in the intermediate layers (0.252 mg/l between 150 and 500 m) and lower layers (0.215 mg/l below 500 m). Along 4°W it is possible to define some geographical zones; thus, the South equatorial counter current waters are shown to be characterized by very weak concentrations of particulate phosphorus (< 0.020 μg-at/l). Ratios between particulate phosphorus, suspended matter and chlorophyll a have been computed: Part/Pp is about 2; the relationship Chl-a-Pp is linear for Chl-a concentrations lower than 1.5 μg/l, increasing exponentially for Chl-a values increasing from 1.5 μg/l to 35 μg/l.
